Car rental with driver is the simplest way to move around India without learning its roads: you choose the car, RutzIndia.com sends a professional chauffeur, and the fare is fixed in writing before the wheels turn. Whether you need a car on rent with driver for a morning of meetings in Gurgaon, a chauffeur-driven Innova for a family trip to the hills, or a sedan to meet a late flight, the booking works the same way in every city we serve. This page explains the three ways to hire, what each costs in 2026, what sits inside the fare and what is billed at actual, and how to pick the right class of car.
Car rental with driver: what does it cost in 2026?
A compact sedan with driver costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve for a local 8 hr/80 km package, Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve for 4 hr/40 km, Rs 36 per km on outstation trips and Rs 3,960 for an airport transfer of up to 40 km. An Innova Crysta is Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hr/80 km or Rs 57.6/km. Fares are before 5% GST.
Those are Delhi base fares. Local and airport packages are adjusted by a city factor, so the same sedan is about Rs 7,920 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hr/80 km in Mumbai, Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve in Bangalore and Rs 6,840 Pay Now to Reserve in Jaipur or Kolkata. Per-kilometre outstation rates do not change by city: a Dzire costs Rs 36/km whether the trip starts in Chennai or Chandigarh.

Three ways to hire a car with a chauffeur
Most people searching for car hire with driver actually need one of three products, and choosing the right one saves real money.
Local packages by the hour
For errands, meetings, sightseeing or a wedding day inside one city, book a time-and-distance package. The two standard slabs are 4 hr/40 km and 8 hr/80 km, and the clock runs from the moment the car reports at your door to the moment it is released. Use the 4-hour slab for a hospital visit or a single client meeting; use the 8-hour slab for a full day of city sightseeing. Full details sit on our 8 hr/80 km local car rental page.
Outstation by the kilometre
Leaving the city? Outstation hire is charged per kilometre, and the chauffeur stays with you for the whole trip. On a round trip we bill the greater of the actual kilometres or 250 km for each calendar day the car is away, which protects the driver's day when you spend a quiet day at a resort. If you are only going one way, a one way drop taxi usually costs about half. Our outstation cabs guide explains both in depth.
Transfers to and from the airport
A fixed-price airport taxi covers any single run of up to 40 km between the terminal and your address. Flights are tracked, the chauffeur waits with a name board, and the first hour after an international landing (30 minutes after a domestic one) is free.

Per-km rates by car class for outstation hire
When the car leaves the city, the whole fare is built from one number: the per-km rate of the class you choose. The same rate applies to a one way drop and to a round trip; the difference is that a round trip is billed on at least 250 km for every calendar day the car is away. The last column below shows what that daily floor costs in each class, so you can see the smallest possible bill for a day on the road.
| Class | Seats | Rate per km | One day's 250 km floor | Three days (750 km floor) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact sedan | 4 | Rs 36 | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| MUV (Ertiga, Carens) | 6 | Rs 42 | Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 31,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium sedan | 4 | Rs 48 | Rs 12,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta or Hycross | 6 | Rs 57.6 | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | 16 | Rs 78 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium SUV (Fortuner class) | 6 | Rs 84 | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Force Urbania | 17 | Rs 102 | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 76,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mini bus | 35 | Rs 130 | Rs 33,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,01,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Luxury sedan (E-Class, 5 Series, A6) | 3 | Rs 170 | Rs 41,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,23,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Luxury MPV (Vellfire) | 5 | Rs 210 | Rs 52,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,57,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Luxury coach | 45 | Rs 210 | Rs 52,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,57,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Luxury SUV (GLS, X7, Q7, Range Rover) | 5 | Rs 230 | Rs 56,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,68,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Flagship sedan (S-Class, 7 Series) | 3 | Rs 330 | Rs 82,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 2,47,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
All of these are before 5% GST, and each overnight stop adds the driver's allowance of Rs 1,500. Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maybach and vintage cars are quoted individually. For VIP movements, the Vellfire on rent and Mercedes car on rent pages go into seating, boot space and chauffeur dress standards; for group outings, compare the Urbania on rent with a mini bus on rent.
Chauffeur-driven, self-drive or app cab?
People comparing car hire with driver against the alternatives usually care about four things: total cost, effort, risk and paperwork. A fair side-by-side:
| Question | Car with chauffeur (RutzIndia.com) | Self-drive rental | App cab |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who drives? | A professional driver who knows the roads | You, on your own licence | A driver matched per ride |
| Security deposit | None | Typically required | None |
| Fuel | Included for the booked kilometres | Your cost; refuel before return | Included |
| Tolls, parking, state fees | At actual, receipted | Your cost, and your time at barriers | Usually added to the fare |
| Price certainty | Fixed at booking | Fixed rent, variable fuel and fees | Can change with demand |
| Multi-day, multi-city trip | One car and driver throughout | Possible if you want to drive | Generally one ride at a time |
| Damage or challan worries | The operator's responsibility | Yours | The operator's responsibility |
Self-drive can suit a confident driver on a short city trip. For hill roads, unfamiliar highways, weddings or anyone who would rather look out of the window, a driver is usually worth the difference.

What sits inside the fare, and what is billed at actual
A car rental quote from RutzIndia.com includes the vehicle, fuel for the kilometres in your package, the chauffeur's wages for the hours booked, and the driver's food on local duties. You will not see a separate "service fee" line.
A few costs genuinely vary with your route, so they are passed through at exactly what was paid, with receipts:
- Tolls. Every car carries a FASTag, so plazas on the Yamuna Expressway, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway or the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway are charged as the tag deducts them. You can check plaza rates on the NHAI website.
- State permits and entry taxes. Crossing into another state can attract a border permit fee, for instance on the Delhi to Himachal or Uttarakhand runs.
- Parking. Airport parking, monument lots and hotel parking are billed as paid.
- Driver night allowance. On multi-day trips the chauffeur receives Rs 1,500 per night, depending on the city and season, which covers his stay.
Extra hours and extra kilometres beyond a local package are shown on your quote before you confirm, so there is no guesswork at the end of the day.
Choosing the right car for your trip
The cheapest car is not always the right one. A few rules of thumb from our travel desk:
- One or two travellers, city use: a compact sedan such as a Dzire is perfectly comfortable and parks easily in older neighbourhoods like Chandni Chowk or Fort Kochi.
- Business travel: a Honda City or Camry gives more rear legroom and a quieter cabin for calls. Corporates booking regularly should look at our corporate car rental accounts, which carry monthly GST invoices.
- Families of five or six, or anyone with large suitcases: the Innova Crysta on rent is the workhorse of Indian highways, with captain seats and room for three large bags. An Ertiga is cheaper but tighter on luggage.
- Hills and bad roads: a Fortuner on rent has the ground clearance for Spiti, Kashmir or the Kumaon interior.
- Groups of eight to twenty: a Tempo Traveller on rent is usually cheaper per head than two cars, and keeps the group together.
- Weddings and VIP guests: see our luxury car rental and wedding car rental pages for Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover and Rolls-Royce.

Popular trips with a driver from the metros
Many customers book a car rental with driver for a single drive out of the city and back. Some worked examples, all at Delhi-origin sedan rates of Rs 36/km before GST:
- Delhi to Agra same-day: the city is about 233 km away by the Yamuna Expressway. A day return bills about 466 km, so a Dzire costs about Rs 16,780 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta about Rs 26,560 Pay Now to Reserve, plus tolls and Taj Mahal parking. See Delhi to Agra taxi and the same-day Agra tour by car. Friday closure of the Taj is listed on the official Taj Mahal site.
- Delhi to Jaipur over two days: about 280 km each way, so about 560 km in total, which is above the 500 km two-day minimum. A sedan works out to about Rs 20,160 plus one driver night allowance. See Delhi to Jaipur taxi.
- Mumbai to Pune: about 150 km on the expressway; one way in a sedan is Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve. See Mumbai to Pune taxi.
- Bangalore to Mysore: about 145 km on the access-controlled highway; a one-way sedan is Rs 5,220 Pay Now to Reserve. See Bangalore to Mysore taxi.
- Delhi to Manali: about 540 km and 12 hours. A five-day round trip bills the 1,250 km minimum (250 km a day), so an Innova is about Rs 71,250 plus four nights of driver allowance, tolls and Himachal entry fees. See Delhi to Manali taxi.
Planning a longer circuit? Our Golden Triangle tour by car and Rajasthan tour by car itineraries keep one chauffeur with you for the whole trip.
State permits and interstate taxes on a multi-city hire
A car rental with driver that crosses state borders runs on a tourist permit, and it helps to know how that works because it explains a line you may see on your bill.
Since May 2023, tourist vehicles in India can be registered under the All India Tourist Vehicles (Permit) Rules, 2023, notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The operator pays the permit fee centrally through the Parivahan system, and that fee is shared among the states. In August 2023 the ministry wrote to all states and union territories advising them not to levy any other tax or fee on vehicles running under a valid all-India permit; the MoRTH circular is public.
In practice the picture still varies. Himachal Pradesh runs entry tax barriers at its borders, and in 2025 the central government asked for its online collection of entry tax from all-India permit vehicles to be switched off; Uttarakhand has announced a green cess on out-of-state vehicles collected through FASTag. Rules like these change often, so we do not build a guessed amount into your fare. Instead:
- whatever a state lawfully collects at the border is paid by the driver and shown on your bill with the receipt;
- if a charge is disputed or not due under the permit, we do not pass it on;
- city-limit entry fees and eco or green fees at specific destinations are treated the same way.
For a Delhi-Agra-Jaipur circuit you will typically cross from Delhi into Uttar Pradesh and then Rajasthan; for a Chandigarh-Shimla-Manali holiday, into Himachal. The desk will tell you in advance which borders your route crosses.
Rates for a car with driver in all 27 cities
Local packages move with each city's cost factor. The table below shows the 8 hr/80 km day in a compact sedan and in an Innova Crysta, rounded to the nearest Rs 10 and before GST, with a link to each city's taxi page for sightseeing plans, airport notes and localities.
What a good chauffeur does, and what he will not do
The driver makes or breaks a day of hire, so these are the standards we brief every chauffeur on:
- Reports ten minutes early, calls when he arrives, and waits without pressure.
- Keeps the car ready between stops: cabin cooled before you return, water bottles topped up, boot organised.
- Takes the route you choose. He will suggest the faster road or warn you about a toll, but the decision is yours.
- Knows the rules of each stop: where the tourist cars park at Amer Fort, which gate to use at Qutub Minar, how far the car can go towards the Varanasi ghats.
- Does not smoke in or near the car, take other passengers, or run personal errands on your time.
- Rests properly on long trips. A tired driver is the biggest risk on Indian highways, so we plan duty hours and would rather suggest a halt than push a twelve-hour drive into the night.
If you want the same chauffeur again on your next trip, ask when you book; we try hard to arrange it.
How booking a car with driver works
- Tell us the plan. Use the online booker or WhatsApp the desk with pickup address, date, time, number of travellers and bags, and a rough itinerary.
- Receive a written quote. You get the package or per-km fare, the GST line, and a list of what will be charged at actual. Nothing is added later without your say-so.
- Pay securely. Pay an advance by card or UPI through the booker; the balance can be settled at the end of the trip. Companies can request a GST invoice in their registered name.
- Meet your chauffeur. Driver name, car model and registration number reach you by SMS and email before pickup, usually the evening before for early starts.
- Change plans easily. Cancel free of charge more than 72 hours before pickup. Within 72 hours a 10% charge applies, rising to 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on a no-show. The full cancellation policy is written in plain language.
Who books a car rental with driver?
Families on holiday want one car and one chauffeur for the whole trip, rather than haggling with a new taxi in every town. NRIs visiting home often keep a car for a week of relatives, bank visits and a quick pilgrimage; our NRI car hire page covers airport meets at odd hours and payment from overseas cards. Foreign tourists value a driver who knows where to park at Amer Fort or how early to leave for Varanasi's ghats. Companies use chauffeur-driven cars for visiting executives, roadshows and board days, and many move to monthly car rental with driver once usage is steady. And during the wedding season, roughly November to February, hosts book fleets of sedans and Innovas to shuttle guests between hotels and venues.
Festival weeks such as Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja in Kolkata and the Christmas-New Year fortnight in Goa fill up early. Booking two to three weeks ahead gives you the widest choice of cars and the same chauffeur for the whole trip.
