Taxi service in Chennai: what you will pay
With RutzIndia.com a sedan taxi in Chennai costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve for an airport drop or pickup up to 40 km, Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve for a 4 hour/40 km slot and Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve for a full 8 hour/80 km day. For Pondicherry, Tirupati or Kanchipuram, sedans run at Rs 36/km and Innova Crysta at Rs 57.6/km. Add 5% GST; tolls and parking at cost.
Chennai is a city that rewards a patient driver. The IT corridor on Old Mahabalipuram Road stretches south for more than 20 km, the old neighbourhoods of Mylapore, Triplicane and George Town are dense and busy, and the East Coast Road runs beside the sea to some of Tamil Nadu's finest temples and beaches. Our Chennai taxi service is built for all of it: pre-booked private cars, chauffeurs who know the difference between Kodambakkam and Kottivakkam, and fares that are fixed when you pay rather than when you arrive.
Chennai uses a 1.00 city multiplier, which means our local and airport prices equal the national card on the fares page. The columns below are arranged the way Chennai customers usually ask: per-km cost first, then the short packages.
| Car and seats | Outstation per km | 4 hr / 40 km | Airport, up to 40 km | 8 hr / 80 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan: Dzire, Amaze, Aura (4) | Rs 36 | Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve |
| MUV: Ertiga, Carens (6) | Rs 42 | Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 4,950 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium: City, Verna, Camry (4) | Rs 48 | Rs 6,480 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 5,940 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross (6) | Rs 57.6 | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner, Gloster, Meridian (6) | Rs 84 | Rs 13,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,360 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller (12-26) | Rs 78 | Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
Prices are in rupees before 5% GST. Toll gates on the ECR, OMR and national highways, the Andhra Pradesh or Puducherry entry permit where needed, and parking are recovered at actual cost. Outstation round trips carry a floor of 250 km per calendar day, and when the driver stays overnight you pay a Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve night allowance.

Chennai airport taxi: MAA terminals and travel times
Chennai International Airport sits at Meenambakkam and Tirusulam on GST Road, about 15 km south-west of the city centre. Domestic and international terminals stand side by side, joined by walkways, so your chauffeur waits at whichever arrivals exit matches your flight. Terminal and airline details are on the Airports Authority of India page for Chennai.
We track every incoming flight. For international arrivals the first 60 minutes after landing are free, and for domestic arrivals the first 30; after that, waiting is added at the hourly package rate. Late-night arrivals from Singapore, Dubai and Colombo are common, and the chauffeur will be at the exit with your name on a board whatever the hour.
| Area | Distance from MAA (about) | Usual drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Guindy, Alandur | 7 km | 15 min |
| Tambaram, Chromepet | 10-12 km | 20-25 min |
| Velachery, Porur | 10-12 km | 25 min |
| T Nagar, Ashok Nagar | 13 km | 30 min |
| Anna Salai, Teynampet | 14 km | 30-35 min |
| Adyar, Besant Nagar | 15 km | 35 min |
| Mylapore, Nungambakkam | 16 km | 35-40 min |
| Egmore, Chennai Central | 18-19 km | 40 min |
| Sholinganallur on OMR | 20 km | 40 min |
| Anna Nagar | 20 km | 40 min |
| Siruseri SIPCOT, Sriperumbudur | 30 km | 50 min |
Mahabalipuram and Kelambakkam lie beyond 40 km and are priced on distance. For meeting points and early departures, see the dedicated Chennai airport taxi page, or the national airport taxi overview.
Car on rent in Chennai for a half or full day
Chennai's local packages are designed around the way people actually move: a morning of errands, an afternoon at a hospital, or a whole day of family visits across the city. The 4 hr/40 km hire is Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan and suits a silk-saree run to Pondy Bazaar and Usman Road, or a consultation at one of the large hospitals on Greams Road with the car waiting. The 8 hr/80 km day at Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve covers a sightseeing circuit:
- Kapaleeshwarar Temple and the tank in Mylapore at opening time.
- San Thome Basilica and a slow drive along Marina Beach.
- Fort St George and the museum inside.
- Lunch at a classic tiffin house in Mylapore or T Nagar.
- Government Museum and the Egmore art gallery.
- Sunset at Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar.
Extra hours and kilometres beyond the package are shown in the booker before you confirm. Metro stations on the Chennai Metro Rail network are handy meeting points if you want to combine metro and cab. For a car and chauffeur over a week or a month, see car rental with driver in Chennai.

Temple towns and coastal drives: outstation cabs from Chennai
The roads out of Chennai lead to some of India's great pilgrimage and heritage sites. The East Coast Road hugs the Bay of Bengal down to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, GST Road runs to Chengalpattu and Tiruchirappalli, and the Tirupati road heads north-west into Andhra Pradesh.
| Destination | Distance (about) | Sedan | Innova Crysta | Billing basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai to Pondicherry taxi, one way | 150 km | Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve | Distance x rate |
| Pondicherry same-day return | 300 km | Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 17,100 Pay Now to Reserve | Actual km |
| Mahabalipuram day trip | about 110 km return | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | 250 km minimum |
| Kanchipuram temple day | about 150 km return | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | 250 km minimum |
| Tirupati same-day return | about 270 km return | Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve | Actual km |
| Chennai to Bangalore, one way | 345 km | Rs 12,420 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,670 Pay Now to Reserve | Distance x rate |
All fares are before GST, tolls and state permits. Pondicherry is a Union Territory, and Tirupati sits across the Andhra Pradesh border, so a permit fee applies on both trips. For Tirupati darshan, our drivers can drop you at Alipiri or take you up the ghat road to Tirumala; plan the climb in daylight.
The ECR drive deserves time rather than speed. Between the city and Mahabalipuram you pass the Muttukadu backwaters, the Madras Crocodile Bank and the DakshinaChitra heritage village, each worth an hour. At Mahabalipuram itself, the Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance and the Five Rathas are the UNESCO-listed group of monuments most visitors come for, and the chauffeur can wait near the entrance while you walk between them. Carry on south and the road passes Kalpakkam and the salt pans before reaching Pondicherry's French Quarter, where narrow one-way streets make a local driver genuinely useful. The Bangalore to Chennai taxi page covers the same highway in the opposite direction, and our pilgrimage taxi page links longer temple circuits such as Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Rameswaram. General rules on billing are explained on outstation cabs.
OMR, Guindy and the business side of Chennai
Weekday bookings in Chennai revolve around the IT and manufacturing belt. OMR from Tidel Park through Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur and on to Siruseri is lined with tech campuses, while Guindy, Ambattur and the Sriperumbudur-Oragadam auto corridor host factories and industrial estates. Visiting teams often land at MAA, stay on OMR and move between plants for two or three days in one Innova or premium sedan with the same chauffeur. GST invoices come with every trip, and corporate car rental sets up monthly billing. For daily shift transport, our employee transport services page has the details.
Rush hours on OMR run roughly 8.30-10.30 am and 6-9 pm, and the Kathipara junction near the airport is the city's busiest interchange. On heavy days we suggest leaving 30 minutes earlier for flights.

Monsoon, Margazhi and festival timing
Chennai's calendar is different from North India's, and it affects travel:
- Northeast monsoon (October to December): most of the city's rain arrives in these months. Cyclone warnings and heavy downpours can flood Velachery, Pallikaranai and parts of OMR; we monitor alerts and reschedule if roads are closed.
- Margazhi music and dance season (December to January): sabhas in Mylapore, Alwarpet and T Nagar host packed evening concerts, and cars queue outside the Music Academy after each show.
- Pongal (mid-January): a huge exodus to southern Tamil Nadu; outstation cabs sell out, so book early.
- Deepavali and Vinayaka Chaturthi: busy shopping streets in T Nagar and festive immersion processions to the Marina.
- Wedding muhurtham days: marriage halls in Mylapore, T Nagar, Anna Nagar and along ECR are full on auspicious dates, especially in the Thai month (January-February).
- Summer (April to June): intense heat; every car we send is checked for strong air-conditioning.
Neighbourhoods and stations we cover
We pick up across Chennai: George Town, Egmore, Chetpet, Nungambakkam, Kilpauk, Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Alwarpet, Adyar, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery, T Nagar, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Porur, Tambaram, Pallavaram, Medavakkam and the whole OMR and ECR belt up to Kovalam. Railway pickups at Chennai Central (MGR), Egmore and Tambaram are straightforward; send the train number and coach and the chauffeur will meet you at the right exit.
Groups, weddings and luxury cars in Chennai
For groups of 12 to 26, the Tempo Traveller is the natural choice at Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve for a local day or Rs 78/km outstation, ideal for a temple tour to Kanchipuram or a team outing to Mahabalipuram; see tempo traveller in Chennai. For weddings, wedding car rental in Chennai supplies decorated cars and guest shuttles, and luxury car rental in Chennai covers Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Range Rover for executives and special guests. Our cars are all within four model years, with an exception up to seven years for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach.
Chennai hourly packages, including the 12 hour day
Plenty of Chennai days outgrow eight hours: a wedding muhurtham at dawn followed by a reception at night, a factory audit in Sriperumbudur with an evening flight, or a family circuit of temples in Mylapore, Triplicane and Vadapalani. The 12 hr/120 km package prices such a day upfront. It equals one and a half times the 8 hour fare plus 40 km at the car's per-km rate, rounded to the nearest Rs 10. Chennai uses the base multiplier; fares updated September 2026.
| Car | Chennai day it suits | 12 hr / 120 km | 8 hr / 80 km | 4 hr / 40 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Dzire, Amaze) | Silk shopping on Usman Road and a Mylapore lunch | Rs 12,240 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga or Carens | Temple visits in Mylapore, Triplicane and Vadapalani | Rs 15,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium sedan (City, Verna, Camry) | Plant visit at Sriperumbudur and a Guindy meeting | Rs 18,120 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,480 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta or Hycross | Wedding family between hall, home and hotel | Rs 21,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner or Gloster | Senior guests on an OMR campus tour | Rs 37,110 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 13,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | Group day at Mahabalipuram and DakshinaChitra | Rs 32,370 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve |
Most Chennai city days stay inside 80 km, so hours are usually the limit. Days that reach out to Sriperumbudur, Oragadam or Kelambakkam use kilometres faster. Any excess hours or kilometres are billed at the booker rate shown before you confirm.
Chennai taxi rate per km, with temple-trail examples
Per-km pricing applies to every outstation trip. The first example is a one way drop to Madurai (about 460 km), a common journey for families visiting home or the Meenakshi temple. The second shows a four-day temple circuit, which bills at least 1,000 km.
| Class | Per km | Chennai to Madurai one way (460 km) | Four-day minimum (1,000 km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan | Rs 36 | Rs 16,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga | Rs 42 | Rs 19,320 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium sedan | Rs 48 | Rs 22,080 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 48,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta | Rs 57.6 | Rs 26,220 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | Rs 78 | Rs 35,880 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner | Rs 84 | Rs 38,640 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 84,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Force Urbania | Rs 102 | Rs 46,920 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,02,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mercedes E-Class class | Rs 170 | Rs 75,900 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,65,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
A four-day circuit through Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Trichy and Madurai usually runs past 1,000 km, so the actual distance is billed instead, plus three driver night allowances. All figures are before 5% GST and tolls. For groups of ten to seventeen who want more comfort on a long pilgrimage, see Urbania on rent; seats and luggage for every class are on the fleet page.

Chauffeur car, app cab or self-drive in Chennai?
Chennai has app cabs, autorickshaws, the metro, suburban trains and self-drive rentals. Here is how a pre-booked chauffeur fits among them.
| Need | Pre-booked RutzIndia.com car | App cab | Self-drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 am arrival from Singapore | Name board, flight tracked, fixed fare | Depends on availability | You collect a car at night |
| Day of temple visits with elders | Car waits at each temple | New ride for every stop | You find parking in narrow streets |
| Pondicherry weekend | One way or round trip per km | Varies by app | You drive the ECR |
| Company expense | GST invoice every trip | App receipt | Rental invoice |
This is about matching the service to the trip rather than ranking them. For weekday use over a month, compare monthly car rental with driver; for families of six, Innova Crysta on rent; and for visitors from abroad, NRI car hire in India.
Temple etiquette and practical tips for Chennai trips
Temple visits are a large part of Chennai travel, and a few customs make them smoother. Footwear is left outside every temple, often at a paid counter, so leave valuables in the car with the chauffeur rather than in your shoes. Several temples expect traditional dress; many men wear a veshti and women a saree or salwar, and some shrines restrict entry to parts of the inner sanctum. Darshan queues at Tirupati, Kanchipuram and Kapaleeshwarar are longest at weekends and during festival days, so the chauffeur plans pickups around your expected exit time. In summer, start early: by noon, stone temple floors can be too hot to walk on comfortably. Carry a small cloth bag for flowers and prasadam, and keep some change for the footwear counter and for archanai tickets.
Short escapes from Chennai that fit a single day
Chennai residents rarely need to go far for a change of scene. Because a round trip bills a minimum of 250 km for the day, every destination within roughly 125 km each way costs the same flat amount, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before GST and tolls. That makes it simple to plan a relaxed outing.
| Outing | About from the city | Best time | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kovalam (Covelong) beach | 40 km | October to March mornings | Surf schools, fishing village, quiet beach walks |
| Muttukadu and DakshinaChitra | 35 km | Weekdays | Backwater boating and a living heritage village |
| Pulicat Lake | 60 km | November to February | Flamingos and migratory birds, the old Dutch cemetery |
| Vedanthangal bird sanctuary | 85 km | November to February, early morning | One of India's oldest water-bird sanctuaries |
| Kanchipuram silk and temples | 75 km | Any weekday | Kailasanathar and Ekambareswarar temples, silk weavers |
| Thiruporur Kandaswamy temple | 45 km | Weekday mornings | Historic Murugan shrine near OMR, quiet outside festival days |
A few planning notes help. Bird sanctuaries are at their best in the first two hours after sunrise, so a 5 am pickup is normal; the chauffeur waits in the car park while you walk. Kanchipuram's silk shops are clustered on a few busy streets, and the driver drops you close and meets you at a named shop. For Pulicat, carry water and snacks, since facilities are basic. Beach outings on the East Coast Road are pleasant on weekday mornings, while Sunday evenings bring heavy traffic back towards Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar, so leave early if you have an evening plan in the city.
If you prefer to stay overnight at an ECR resort or in Pondicherry, a two-day round trip bills at least 500 km, which is Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan plus one driver night allowance. Tell us the resort name when you book, as some beachside properties have long private approach roads and gate procedures.
Booking steps, inclusions and cancellation
Open the booker, choose airport, local or outstation, set your addresses and time, and see the fare before paying by card or UPI. The chauffeur's details come through on WhatsApp ahead of pickup. The fare includes the car, driver, fuel and kilometres in your package; GST at 5%, tolls, permits, parking and night allowance are extra.
Cancelling costs nothing more than 72 hours ahead. Inside that window we keep 10% of the fare; inside 48 hours, 50%; and inside 24 hours or for a no-show, the full amount. Read the complete cancellation policy before you book.
