In an older Chennai wedding, the groom did not simply arrive. On the evening before the muhurtham he was taken in the janavasam, a slow procession from a nearby temple to the kalyana mandapam, seated in a flower-covered open car while nadaswaram and thavil played ahead. Many families in Mylapore and T. Nagar still keep that custom, and many more want a car that looks the part for the reception, the dawn ceremony and the ride home. Wedding car rental in Chennai from RutzIndia.com provides all of it: the open car or classic saloon for the janavasam, a Mercedes or Vellfire for the couple, and Innovas and Tempo Travellers to carry relatives from Chennai airport and the hotels on Anna Salai to the mandapam by first light.

The Tamil wedding sequence, seen from the driver's seat
A Tamil wedding usually spans an evening and the following morning, and every step has a transport need.
- Nichayathartham - the formal engagement, often weeks earlier; a pair of Innovas moves the two families between homes and a temple.
- Janavasam and reception - on the eve, the groom's procession and then the reception on the mandapam stage. This is where a vintage car for the wedding or a white convertible earns its place, even if it drives only the last kilometre.
- Vratham and Kashi Yatrai - early next morning; the groom's mock departure with umbrella and fan happens in front of the mandapam, so parking the groom car nearby makes a better picture.
- Maalai maatral and oonjal - garland exchange and the swing; no driving, but chauffeurs stay close in case elders need to rest in an air-conditioned car.
- Muhurtham - kanyadaanam and mangalya dharanam at the auspicious time, commonly between 6 and 9 am.
- Griha pravesam - the couple's first entry to the groom's home, usually by late morning, in the day's finest car.
Families from Iyer, Iyengar, Chettiar, Nadar and Mudaliar communities all vary these steps, and Christian couples at churches such as the San Thome Basilica or Muslim families in Triplicane and Royapettah have their own sequences. Tell us yours and we will build the duty sheet around it.
Muhurtham months and the monsoon
Most Tamil families avoid the months of Aadi (roughly mid-July to mid-August) and Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January), so demand crowds into Thai, Maasi, Panguni, Chithirai, Vaikasi, Aavani and Aippasi-Karthigai. On the busiest muhurtham days a single mandapam road can host three weddings at once, and good groom cars go early; 45 to 60 days of notice is wise.
Chennai also has an unusual weather pattern: the heavy rain comes with the northeast monsoon from October to December. A November muhurtham can mean flooded underpasses near T. Nagar or Velachery at 5 am. We keep taller vehicles such as Innovas and Tempo Travellers on standby for those dates and add route buffers; a Mercedes may be swapped for a Vellfire if the ground clearance matters.

Mandapam districts and hotel belts
- Mylapore and Mandaveli - classic kalyana mandapams near the Kapaleeshwarar Temple; narrow streets and very limited parking, so we drop and hold nearby.
- T. Nagar, West Mambalam and Kodambakkam - dense mandapam belt with morning congestion on Usman Road; Tempo shuttles work better than coaches.
- Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar - temple weddings and mid-size halls; early arrival avoids the queue of wedding parties.
- Anna Nagar, Kilpauk and Nungambakkam - larger halls and hotel banquets, easier for Vellfires and coaches.
- OMR and Sholinganallur - convention centres favoured by IT families; allow time on the IT corridor at peak hours.
- ECR towards Mahabalipuram - beach resorts about 40 to 60 km south for destination-style weddings; a mini bus or luxury coach shuttle is usually cheapest per guest.
Choosing cars for the couple and the families
For the groom. The Mercedes E-Class remains the easy choice: comfortable in a veshti and angavastram, dignified, and large enough for parents. See more options, including BMW and Audi, on luxury car rental in Chennai and the Mercedes on rent page.
For the bride. A nine-yard madisar or a heavy Kanjeevaram needs room to sit without creasing, so families often choose a Toyota Vellfire for the ride to griha pravesam.
For the janavasam. A vintage convertible, a classic Ambassador-style saloon or a decorated open car is sourced for the procession; these are quoted on request, and so is a Rolls-Royce for a reception entry, described on our Rolls-Royce for wedding page.
Standards. Fleet cars are within four model years, air-conditioned and sanitised; Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach up to seven model years.

Guest transport: airport, hotels and the dawn run
Relatives flying in land at Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam, about 15 to 20 km from T. Nagar and Mylapore. Our airport taxi in Chennai service tracks the flight, meets guests with a name board and waits 60 minutes free after international arrivals and 30 minutes after domestic ones; beyond that, waiting is billed hourly. Terminal background is on the Chennai International Airport page.
On the muhurtham morning, the heavy lift is getting 100 or more elders into the mandapam by 6 am. A mix that works:
- Innovas on 8-hour packages for grandparents and VIP relatives, one per family unit.
- Tempo Traveller hire in Chennai in 12 or 17 seats for cousins, looping between the hotel block and the hall.
- An Urbania or mini bus for the reception crowd from the OMR hotels.
Guests driving in from Karnataka can use a Bangalore to Chennai taxi, about 345 km, from Rs 12,420 Pay Now to Reserve one way by sedan. If the couple continues to a honeymoon by the sea, a Chennai to Pondicherry taxi is Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve one way by sedan or Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova.
Flower work that suits a Chennai wedding
- Malli and rose - jasmine strands with red roses along the doors, the traditional look.
- Thoranam style - mango leaves and marigold across the bonnet, echoing the mandapam entrance.
- Lotus and white - lotus buds with white chrysanthemum for a temple wedding.
- Tropical evening - orchids and anthurium for a beach reception on ECR.
Decoration is quoted with the booking by florist and theme; no wire touches the paintwork and the windscreen stays clear.
Packages priced from the rate card
- Janavasam Evening - Mercedes E-Class escort on 4 hr / 40 km plus one Innova on 4 hr / 40 km: Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve + Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve = Rs 30,060 Pay Now to Reserve, with the open or vintage procession car added on request.
- Mandapam Morning - E-Class for the groom, two Innovas and one Tempo Traveller for the full day: Rs 37,500 Pay Now to Reserve + Rs 25,200 Pay Now to Reserve + Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve = Rs 82,200 Pay Now to Reserve.
- ECR Beach Wedding - Vellfire for the couple, two Urbanias and a mini bus: Rs 54,000 Pay Now to Reserve + Rs 54,000 Pay Now to Reserve + Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve = Rs 1,50,000 per day.
All before 5% GST; ECR tolls and resort parking at actual cost. If cars stay overnight at a resort, a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 per chauffeur applies.
Chennai wedding car rates for 3, 5 and 8 hours
The janavasam needs a car for about three hours, the reception night for five, and the muhurtham morning for a full day. So we quote three slots. The 3-hour slot is billed as our 4 hr / 40 km package; the 5-hour slot is that package plus one-eighth of the day fare, with 50 km; the 8-hour slot is the standard 8 hr / 80 km day. Chennai uses the base rate card and every fare excludes 5% GST.
| Car for a Chennai wedding | 3 hr / 40 km | 5 hr / 50 km | 8 hr / 80 km | Flowers that suit it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Innova Crysta for the paatti and thatha | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,120 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Malli strands on the door handles |
| Fortuner for the maama's family | Rs 13,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 16,320 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Marigold and mango-leaf thoranam |
| Mercedes E-Class, mappillai car | Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 37,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Jasmine curtain across the bonnet with red roses |
| Vellfire for the ponnu and mappillai | Rs 32,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,150 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 54,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Lotus buds and white chrysanthemum |
| Range Rover for the reception arrival | Rs 34,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 41,340 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Tropical orchids and anthurium |
| S-Class for a VIP entry | Rs 57,600 | Rs 69,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 96,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Single orchid spray, satin bow |
| Open or vintage car for janavasam | On request | On request | On request | Full floral body wrap for the procession |
| Rolls-Royce Ghost | On request | On request | On request | Owner-approved florals only |
We keep decoration out of the fare because Chennai flower prices swing sharply: jasmine from the Koyambedu market can double in price during the monsoon and in the busy Thai muhurtham weeks. The florist's quote joins your booking before payment, and our chauffeurs check that nothing blocks the wipers, indicators or number plate, which traffic police can object to.
Guest transport bundles for Chennai weddings
Chennai weddings often split across two days and two sets of guests: the reception crowd on the eve and the family-only muhurtham at dawn. These bundles are sized for the busier day and priced at 8 hr / 80 km per vehicle.
| Package | Guests | Cars (each on 8 hr / 80 km) | Day cost | Works out per head | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mylapore mandapam | 70 | 1 x E-Class, 3 x Innova, 1 x 12-seat Tempo | Rs 94,800 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 1,350 Pay Now to Reserve | Narrow-street hall, dawn muhurtham |
| T. Nagar family wedding | 180 | 1 x E-Class, 1 x Vellfire, 4 x Innova, 3 x 17-seat Tempo | Rs 2,00,400 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 1,110 Pay Now to Reserve | Reception eve plus muhurtham morning |
| Anna Nagar hall | 280 | 1 x Range Rover, 5 x Innova, 2 x Urbania, 2 x 27-seat mini bus | Rs 2,58,000 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 930 | Bigger halls with coach parking |
| ECR beach resort | 350 | 1 x Vellfire, 6 x Innova, 3 x 35-seat mini bus, 2 x 45-seat coach | Rs 3,99,600 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 1,140 Pay Now to Reserve | 40-60 km run from city hotels, per day |
A few practical notes. Mylapore and T. Nagar halls rarely have room for a 45-seat coach, which is why the smaller bundles use Tempo Travellers; see seat plans on Urbania on rent and mini bus on rent. For the ECR bundle, cars stationed overnight at the resort attract the Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve chauffeur night allowance, and ECR toll plazas are billed at cost.
Reaching the mandapam when roads are busy
Chennai's wedding traffic has predictable pinch points. Usman Road and Pondy Bazaar choke by 9 am, Kathipara junction backs up on weekday evenings, and the Anna Salai stretch near Gemini flyover slows whenever a reception crowd leaves at once. Our chauffeurs route around these, and on the muhurtham morning they leave before 5 am when the city is empty.
For guests who prefer rail, the Chennai Metro connects the airport to Guindy, Teynampet and Anna Nagar; a car can meet elders at a metro exit near the hall and save them the airport traffic. Out-of-town relatives who want to see the city after the wedding often add a half-day loop to Kapaleeshwarar, San Thome and Marina Beach on a 4 hr / 40 km package, and the national tourism portal Incredible India lists Tamil Nadu temple circuits for a longer stay.
Which car do Chennai families choose?
- Mappillai (groom) car - a white or silver Mercedes E-Class is the classic; a BMW 5 Series is equally common, see BMW for wedding.
- Bride's car - a Vellfire, because a madisar or heavy silk needs room and a high roof.
- Elders - Innova Crysta, easy to climb into in a veshti or nine-yard saree; details on Innova Crysta on rent.
- Janavasam - an open car or vintage convertible, on request.
- VIP guests - an S-Class or Range Rover for a minister's or CEO's family arriving at the reception.
Every model is shown with seats and luggage space on our fleet page.
Lead times, NRI families and paperwork
Book groom cars and Vellfires 45 to 60 days ahead for Thai and Vaikasi muhurthams; Innovas and Tempos 2 to 3 weeks ahead. NRI families flying in from Singapore, the Gulf or the US often want one co-ordinator from arrival to departure; our NRI car hire in India service and the travel desk handle that, including early-morning pickups for Tirupati or Kanchipuram temple visits around the wedding.
