Chennai to Pondicherry taxi price
A one-way Chennai to Pondicherry taxi on RutzIndia.com is Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan and Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta for about 150 km. A same-day return trip is billed on 300 km, which is Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan. Prices are before 5% GST; tolls, Puducherry entry fee and parking are extra at actual.
There are few better short drives in south India. The East Coast Road keeps the Bay of Bengal on your left for long stretches, passes the shore temples of Mahabalipuram, and delivers you to the tree-lined grid of Pondicherry's French Quarter in around three hours. A chauffeur-driven cab makes the most of it: you choose where to stop, the driver knows which beach turn-offs are worth it, and your luggage does not have to share a seat with strangers.
Travellers book this route for weekend escapes from Chennai, Auroville residencies, beach-resort weddings, college drops, and airport transfers for visitors who land at Chennai and head straight to Puducherry. Whatever your reason, the fare is calculated on distance and vehicle, shown upfront on our booking page.

Fares for one way, day trips and a Pondy weekend
| Vehicle | Seats | One way (about 150 km) | Day return (300 km) | 2-day stay (500 km minimum) |

| Ertiga / Carens | 6 | Rs 6,300 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium sedan (City, Verna) | 4 | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 24,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | 6 | Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 17,100 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Toyota Fortuner | 6 | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | 16 | Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 23,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mercedes E-Class | 3 | Rs 24,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 49,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 82,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
How the numbers are built: one way is the route distance times the per-km rate for the class (Rs 36 for a sedan, Rs 57.6 for an Innova, Rs 78 for a Tempo Traveller). A day return is billed on the actual 300 km. When the car stays overnight, round trips are billed on the higher of kilometres driven or 250 km per calendar day, and the chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night is added.
Not included: 5% GST, the toll plazas on ECR or GST Road, the entry fee that Puducherry levies on outside-registered commercial vehicles, and any parking in White Town, Auroville or a resort. These are pass-through costs with receipts.
Example: two couples leaving Adyar on Saturday morning in an Ertiga, spending Saturday night in Pondicherry, visiting Auroville and Paradise Beach on Sunday and returning that evening, will drive roughly 380 km. The two-day minimum of 500 km applies, so the base is Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve, plus one night allowance, tolls, entry fee and GST.

ECR or GST Road: which way the chauffeur goes
East Coast Road (ECR): the scenic choice. It leaves Chennai through Thiruvanmiyur and Neelankarai, runs past Muttukadu, Kovalam and Mahabalipuram, then continues down the coast through Kalpakkam and Marakkanam, reaching Pondicherry from the north near Kalapet. It carries more local traffic, has speed-breakers through villages, and is lovely at sunrise. Allow about three to three and a half hours without stops.
GST Road (NH 32 via Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Tindivanam): the inland highway, wider and more predictable, with several toll plazas. It is often quicker from the western and southern suburbs, from Chennai airport at Meenambakkam, or from Guindy and Porur. From Tindivanam the road turns east into Puducherry.
Your chauffeur will suggest the better road for your pickup point and time. Many guests go down by ECR for the views and come back by GST Road for speed. On a one-way booking the fare is fixed on the 150 km distance whichever alignment is used.

ECR leg by leg: distance, time and tolls
| Leg on the East Coast Road | About km | Time without stops | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adyar or Thiruvanmiyur to Muttukadu and Kovalam | about 30 | 45-60 min | toll plaza near the Chennai end of ECR; heavy weekend beach traffic |
| Kovalam to Mahabalipuram | about 25 | 30 min | turn-offs for DakshinaChitra and the Crocodile Bank |
| Mahabalipuram to Kalpakkam | about 20 | 25 min | two-lane coastal stretch with village speed-breakers |
| Kalpakkam to Marakkanam | about 40 | 45 min | backwaters and salt pans; few fuel stops, so the driver tops up earlier |
| Marakkanam to Kalapet and White Town | about 35 | 40 min | Puducherry border and entry fee; slow near the university at college hours |
| Whole run | about 150 | 3 to 3.5 hrs | tolls and entry fee billed at actual |
On the GST Road alternative, the legs are Guindy to Chengalpattu (about 55 km), Chengalpattu to Tindivanam (about 65 km, the fastest section) and Tindivanam to Pondicherry (about 40 km), with more toll plazas but fewer speed-breakers.
Train, bus, self-drive or a chauffeur cab
| Option | How it works | Door-to-door time | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | a few direct trains from Chennai Egmore to Puducherry; others need a change at Villupuram | 4 to 5 hrs including getting to and from stations | solo travellers who like rail |
| Government bus | Tamil Nadu and Puducherry state buses, most now leaving from the Kilambakkam terminus on Chennai's southern edge; some ECR services | 4 to 5 hrs including the ride to the terminus | budget travellers |
| Self-drive | ECR is easy to drive, but White Town parking is scarce and the promenade closes to cars at set hours | 3 to 3.5 hrs plus parking | confident drivers staying outside the French Quarter |
| RutzIndia.com chauffeur cab | pickup at your door, airport or station; drop at your heritage hotel, Auroville guesthouse or resort | about 3 hrs | families, groups, airport arrivals, anyone short of time |
Schedules for rail are on the Indian Railways enquiry site and Tamil Nadu state bus services on the TNSTC website. The honest summary: for one person, public transport is cheaper; from three people upward, a sedan at Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve one way works out to Rs 1,800 a head before GST, tolls and entry fee, with no terminus transfers at either end.

Stops worth making on the way
- Cholamandal and DakshinaChitra: an artists' village and a heritage museum of south Indian homes, both just off ECR in the first hour.
- Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram): the Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance and the Five Rathas, a World Heritage site about 55 km from Chennai. Two hours here is well spent; mornings are cooler and less crowded.
- Crocodile Bank and Tiger Cave: short detours near Mahabalipuram, good with children.
- Marakkanam salt pans and backwaters: a quiet coastal stretch, best in soft evening light.
- Auroville: the experimental township just north of Pondicherry. The Matrimandir can be seen from the viewing point after collecting a pass at the visitor centre; details are on the official Auroville website.
A few short stops add little to your cost on a one-way fare. On a same-day round trip, extra kilometres beyond 300 are billed at the per-km rate, and the driver's hours are planned so he is not driving tired at night.

Driving and parking in Pondicherry
Pondicherry has two personalities. White Town, the French Quarter between the canal and the sea, has narrow one-way streets, bougainvillea walls and limited kerbside parking. The Tamil town to the west is busier and commercial. Goubert Avenue, the promenade along Rock Beach, is closed to vehicles during certain hours in the mornings and evenings so that people can walk the seafront; your driver will drop you at the nearest open street.
Common drop points: the heritage hotels of White Town, Aurobindo Ashram, the Promenade, Serenity Beach at Kottakuppam, the resorts on the East Coast Road north of town, Auroville guesthouses, Pondicherry University at Kalapet, JIPMER hospital, and the Chunnambar boat house for Paradise Beach. The Government of Puducherry publishes tourism and transport notices on its official portal.
Pondicherry is a Union Territory, so a Chennai cab crosses a territorial boundary. The Puducherry entry fee for tourist vehicles is paid at the border and added to your bill at actual; you do not need to arrange anything yourself.
Sightseeing add-ons in and around Pondicherry
If the car stays with you, these are easy additions. Extra kilometres on a round-trip or multi-day booking are billed at the class rate; approximate return-distance extras from White Town are shown.
| Add-on | From White Town | Time needed | Approx. extra, sedan / Innova |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aurobindo Ashram, Promenade, French Quarter walk | in town | half a day on foot | none |
| Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Botanical Garden | in town | 1-2 hrs | none |
| Arikamedu, the ancient Indo-Roman trading site | about 4 km | 1 hr | Rs 290 / Rs 460 |
| Chunnambar boat house for Paradise Beach | about 8 km | half a day | Rs 580 / Rs 910 |
| Serenity Beach, Kottakuppam | about 8 km | 2 hrs | Rs 580 / Rs 910 |
| Ousteri Lake for birdwatching | about 10 km | 2 hrs, best early morning | Rs 720 / Rs 1,140 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Auroville visitor centre and Matrimandir viewing point | about 12 km | half a day | Rs 860 / Rs 1,370 Pay Now to Reserve |
A two-day Pondy stay with these add-ons rarely exceeds the 500 km two-day minimum, so the sedan base stays at Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve and the Innova at Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve.
Season guide: when to go and when to be careful
December to February is peak season: pleasant temperatures, clear seas, Christmas and New Year crowds in White Town, and Pongal in mid-January when many Chennai families travel. Book early for these weeks. March to May is hot and humid; start by 6 am so the drive is done before noon. June to September is relatively dry on this coast, since the south-west monsoon largely bypasses it, and weekend traffic is moderate.
October to December brings the north-east monsoon, which is when Tamil Nadu's coast gets most of its rain. Heavy spells can waterlog low stretches of ECR and cyclone warnings occasionally close the coast road. On such days the chauffeur switches to GST Road or, if authorities advise against travel, we help you reschedule. Diwali weekends and the long Deepavali holidays are also busy.
Pickups across Chennai and from the airport
We collect from anywhere in the city at the same per-km fare: T Nagar and Nungambakkam, Mylapore and Adyar, Besant Nagar, the OMR IT corridor from Tidel Park to Siruseri, Velachery, Anna Nagar, Porur, Tambaram and the ECR villas. Chennai Central and Egmore stations are regular pickup points for passengers arriving by overnight train.
Landing at Chennai International Airport? We track the flight, meet you with a name board and wait free for 60 minutes after an international arrival or 30 minutes after a domestic one, after which waiting is billed hourly. Terminal information is on the Chennai airport website. For transfers within the city only, see Chennai airport taxi; for local hire by the day, taxi service in Chennai or a full-day car rental with driver in Chennai.
Picking the right car for your Pondy plans
A compact sedan is all a couple needs for a weekend bag and a beach umbrella; it is also the cheapest way to make the trip. Families of five or six with grandparents are better served by an Ertiga or, for longer legroom and captain seats, an Innova Crysta on rent, which also swallows a pram or a wheelchair. Surfers heading to the breaks near Kovalam and Serenity Beach should mention boards at booking so the desk can confirm the vehicle has room for them before dispatch; long boards may need an MUV with the rear seats folded, which also leaves space for wet suits and a cool box.
Students moving into Pondicherry University hostels at the start of term tend to travel with trunks, buckets and bedding. An Innova or Ertiga with the third row folded handles that in one run, and the chauffeur will wait while you register at the gate if you book a return. Patients and caregivers travelling to JIPMER for a consultation often prefer a premium sedan for its quieter ride; ask for an early slot so you reach the outpatient block before the morning queues.
Whatever you choose, the price stays on distance and class, so upgrading from sedan to Innova on the one-way run costs a known Rs 3,150 Pay Now to Reserve and nothing more.
Groups, weddings and business travel
Pondicherry's beach resorts host plenty of weddings and offsites. A Chennai tempo traveller moves a group of 12 to 17 guests in one go, and we can combine several vehicles for a larger party on one invoice. For the couple's own car, a Mercedes E-Class or a decorated premium vehicle can be arranged; our wedding car rental in Chennai and luxury car rental in Chennai pages explain the options.
Business travellers visiting Pondicherry's industrial estates or institutions can book with GST invoicing in the company name. Every car on our programme is within four model years, air-conditioned and maintained for highway use.
Booking, payment and cancellation
Select pickup, drop point, date, time and vehicle on the online booker. Pay a part advance by card or UPI and the balance at trip end. You will receive the chauffeur's details before departure. Travelling on from Pondicherry? We also run the Bangalore to Chennai taxi corridor and single-direction fares nationwide on our one way taxi page, and the routes hub lists every intercity fare.
Cancel free of charge until 72 hours before pickup. Inside 72 hours we retain 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or on a no-show the whole fare. Read the cancellation policy for the fine print.
