Taxi service in Goa: what a car and driver costs

Goa looks small on a map, but anyone who has tried to get from a villa in Assagao to a beach shack in Palolem knows how long its roads can feel. Public buses are slow, two-wheelers are not for everyone, and on-the-spot taxi fares vary from beach to beach. Goa's local and airport fares carry a 1.10 multiplier, reflecting longer empty returns and peak-season demand; per-km outstation rates are the national standard. The table lists the full day first because that is the package most holidaymakers book.

The rupee fares above do not include 5% GST. Tolls on the new highways, parking at beaches, forts and churches, and permits for trips into Karnataka or Maharashtra are billed at actual cost. Outstation round trips are charged on at least 250 km for each calendar day, and when the driver stays overnight away from Goa the night allowance is Rs 1,500.

Goa airport taxis: Mopa in the north, Dabolim in the south

Goa has two airports, and choosing the right one can save you an hour on the road. Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) sits in Pernem taluka in the far north, close to Morjim, Arambol and Siolim. Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco da Gama, is the older airport and closer to South Goa and Panaji. Chauffeurs track every flight and wait at arrivals with a name board. International passengers have a free hour after landing, and domestic passengers 30 minutes, before hourly waiting charges start. Charter flights from Europe and Russia in winter often land in clusters, which can slow immigration; the hour of grace is there for that.

North Goa and South Goa day tours

An 8 hr/80 km car is the easiest way to see Goa's sights without worrying about parking or directions. A sedan costs Rs 7,920 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 13,860 Pay Now to Reserve. Most visitors split the state into two days.

North Goa day:

A note on Dudhsagar Falls: private cars can take you only as far as Collem, where authorised jeeps run the forest track to the falls in season. The jeep ride is booked on the spot and is not included in the taxi fare; the falls track also closes during the peak monsoon.

Outstation cabs from Goa: Gokarna, Hampi and Mumbai

Many visitors add a side trip across the border. Per-km rates are the same as anywhere in India: Rs 36 sedan, Rs 42 Ertiga, Rs 57.6 Innova Crysta, Rs 78 Tempo Traveller.

All fares are before GST, tolls and state permits, and overnight trips add a driver night allowance. The coastal NH 66 to Gokarna and Karwar is scenic but slow through the towns; the Hampi road climbs through the Western Ghats past Anmod. Goa seasons, festivals and peak dates

• Christmas and New Year (roughly 20 December to 2 January): the busiest fortnight of the year. Cars, villas and hotels sell out, roads to Baga, Anjuna and Vagator jam at night, and fares elsewhere spike. Book your Goa taxi weeks ahead for these dates.
• December music festivals: large events in North Goa draw big crowds; plan pickups away from the venue gates.
• Carnival (February) and Shigmo (March): parades in Panaji, Margao and Mapusa close central roads for an afternoon.
• Sao Joao (June): a monsoon festival in the villages, with wells, streams and a lot of celebration.
• Ganesh Chaturthi: one of Goa's most important festivals, with family visits across the state.
• Monsoon (June to September): most beach shacks close, rivers and waterfalls swell and the countryside turns green. Roads stay open but can be slow in heavy rain.
• Wedding season (November to March): destination weddings at South Goa resorts and North Goa villas need guest transfers and decorated cars.

Goa has its own rules for tourist taxis, and journeys that begin inside the state are served with locally permitted tourist vehicles. Night parking near popular beaches and clubs is limited, so the driver may wait a short walk away and come to you when you call.

Getting around Goa: practical tips

Goa's villages are linked by narrow roads that wind through paddy fields, river bridges and hill ghats, so distances that look short take time. Allow about 90 minutes from Panaji to Palolem and a little over an hour from Calangute to Colva in normal traffic. The Atal Setu bridge over the Mandovi and the newer highway links have cut some journeys, but the coastal belt from Candolim to Baga still slows to a crawl on winter evenings.

Many rented villas in Assagao, Siolim, Parra and Aldona sit down unlit lanes without house numbers, so drop a map pin in the booking notes and add a landmark such as the nearest chapel or grocery. Beach shacks and clubs in Anjuna and Vagator often have one-way approaches at night, and the driver may pick you up at the main road rather than the door. If you are carrying water sports gear, surfboards or a pram, choose an Innova Crysta or Ertiga for the extra boot space. Families with elderly parents can ask for a car with easier access and a pause at a restaurant on longer transfers from Mopa to the south.

Goa hire packages: half day, full day or 12 hours

Holiday days in Goa have a habit of running late. A beach morning in the south, lunch in a Portuguese-era village, a sunset at Chapora and a dinner reservation in Assagao can add up to more than eight hours and well over 80 km. The 12 hr/120 km package gives that sort of day one fixed price: take the Goa full-day rate, add half again, then add the cost of 40 more kilometres for that vehicle, and round to the nearest ten rupees. All three packages include the 1.10 Goa multiplier; fares updated September 2026.

Distance matters in Goa more than visitors expect: a North Goa to Palolem round trip alone is about 150 km. If your plan crosses the state, choose the 12 hour package. Extra hours and kilometres beyond any package are charged at the booker rate shown before you confirm.

Goa taxi fare per km, with two cross-border examples

Trips that leave Goa are billed per kilometre at national rates. The examples below use two drives often booked from Goa: south along the coast to Mangalore (about 360 km) and inland to Kolhapur (about 220 km) for the Mahalaxmi temple and onward trains.

Airport and railway station transfers in Goa

Goa has two airports and several railway stations on the Konkan line, spread along the length of the state. Landing at Mopa or Dabolim, you want the flat airport fare (a sedan is Rs 4,350 Pay Now to Reserve if the hotel is within 40 km). Arriving on the Konkan Railway, where delays are common, reserve the half-day slot instead, costing Rs 4,740 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan; if your hotel is more than 40 km from the station, the booker prices the trip on distance.

Pre-booked chauffeur, local taxi or self-drive in Goa?

Goa's transport differs from other Indian cities. The big national ride-hailing apps have had little or no presence here, and most rides are served by local tourist taxis, motorcycle taxis known as pilots, the state-backed GoaMiles app and self-drive scooter or car rentals. A week in Goa: when to hire a car and when to relax

Most Goa holidays mix lazy beach days with a few big outings, and there is no need to keep a car every day. A sensible pattern is to book the airport transfers, two or three sightseeing days and perhaps one side trip, and to spend the other days on foot near your hotel. Here is how a seven-night stay based in North Goa might look.

The car costs for the week come to Rs 48,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 83,550 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST and parking. Staying in South Goa instead, swap the airports: Dabolim for arrival and departure, and a longer day for the North Goa outing. If your flights use the airport at the far end of the state from your hotel, the transfer will exceed 40 km and the booker will price it on distance.

Timing matters as much as the plan. From mid-December to early January, start sightseeing days by 8 am and aim to be back before the evening jams around Baga and Calangute. During the monsoon, from June to September, beach shacks close and the sea is off-limits for swimming, but the waterfalls, spice farms and green hinterland make the 12 hour South Goa day especially beautiful. Carry cash for small entry fees at forts and churches, and dress modestly for church and temple visits: shoulders and knees covered is the usual courtesy.

Book through the online booker: choose airport, local or outstation, enter your hotel or villa and the time, check the fare and pay by card or UPI.
