Kerala is small on the map and slow on the road, and that is the charm of it. Distances between Munnar, Thekkady and the backwaters are short, but the ghat roads wind through tea and cardamom estates, and every town has a reason to stop. A Kerala tour by car with a RutzIndia.com chauffeur lets you take it at the right speed: collected at Kochi airport, driven up into the hills, down to the houseboats and out to the coast, with one fixed per-km rate and no fuss about luggage or timings.
Kerala tour by car: price for 2026
A Kerala tour by car with RutzIndia.com costs Rs 36 per km in a sedan and Rs 57.6 per km in an Innova Crysta, billed on at least 250 km a day. A five-day Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey circuit is Rs 45,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 71,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before 5% GST, tolls, parking and the driver's night allowance.
Kerala tours use the national rate card on our fares page. Because a round trip is billed on the larger of the actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day, and Kerala's distances are short, most Kerala itineraries are billed on the daily minimum. That makes pricing simple: the number of days decides the fare. The chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night is added for each night away, and tolls, parking, state permits and entry fees are paid at actual cost.
| Kerala itinerary | Nights | Billed km | Sedan | Innova Crysta | Tempo Traveller |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kochi and Munnar (short break) | 2 | 750 km | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey | 4 | 1,250 km | Rs 45,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 71,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 97,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kovalam | 6 | 1,750 km | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 99,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,36,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Grand Kerala with Guruvayur and Varkala | 8 | 2,250 km | Rs 81,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,28,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,75,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
For example, the five-day circuit adds four nights of allowance, Rs 6,000, and 5% GST on the fare. A Force Urbania for a larger family runs at Rs 102 per km, and a premium sedan such as a Honda City at Rs 48 per km. Kochi airport pickups and drops inside the tour are included in the billed kilometres; a standalone Kochi airport taxi is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.

The classic five-day route, day by day
Day 1: Kochi to Munnar (about 125 km, four hours). Your chauffeur meets you at CIAL with a name board, 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one. The road climbs from the plains through Kothamangalam and Adimali, past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, into the tea country. Arrive in time to watch the light go over the estates.
Day 2: Munnar. Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, is the morning highlight. Private cars stop at the entry point, and visitors go up in the forest department's own vehicles, so your chauffeur waits below. The park usually closes for a few weeks around February and March for the tahr calving season; the Eravikulam National Park site posts the dates. Afternoon: Mattupetty dam, Echo Point, Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border, and a tea museum.
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady (about 100 km, three and a half hours). A beautiful drive through cardamom hills to Kumily and the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Take the boat ride on Periyar lake if tickets are available, or a guided nature walk run by the reserve; details are on the Periyar Tiger Reserve site. Evening: a spice plantation tour and a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in Kumily.
Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey (about 140 km, four hours). Down from the hills to the backwaters. Houseboats usually board around noon and cruise the canals and Vembanad lake until sunset, then moor for the night. The car and chauffeur stay at the jetty; his night allowance covers it.
Day 5: Alleppey to Kochi (about 60 km). Disembark after breakfast, drive to Fort Kochi for the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Dutch Palace in Mattancherry and Jew Town, then on to the airport or your hotel.
Actual driving on this route is about 500 km, but the five-day minimum is 1,250 km, which is why the fare is set by the days rather than the distance. Adding a day in Kumarakom or Fort Kochi costs one more day of minimum billing.
Seven-day Kerala tour: kilometres day by day
The week-long version adds the southern beaches and ends at Trivandrum airport, so you never drive back north.
| Day | Route | Km driven (about) | Night at |

Longer loops: Kovalam, Varkala and Guruvayur
With a week, continue south from the backwaters:
- Kovalam and Trivandrum. About 160 km from Alleppey, Kovalam's lighthouse beach is the classic end to a Kerala tour. Visit the Padmanabhaswamy temple and the Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, and fly home from Trivandrum airport.
- Varkala. Cliff-top beach and the Janardanaswamy temple, about 50 km north of Trivandrum.
- Guruvayur and Thrissur. North of Kochi, the Sri Krishna temple at Guruvayur and Thrissur's Vadakkunnathan temple; the Thrissur Pooram festival in April or May is one of Kerala's grandest.
- Athirappilly and Vazhachal. The big waterfalls, about 70 km from Kochi, a good half-day on the way to or from the airport.
Travellers coming from the east can also start from Tamil Nadu: Munnar is reachable via Coimbatore and Pollachi or via Bodinayakanur. Our Coimbatore taxi service covers pickups there, and the Bangalore to Ooty taxi can link a Nilgiris leg.

Houseboat practicalities for road-trippers
The houseboat night is the part of a Kerala tour that most needs coordinating with the car. A few things our chauffeurs have learned:
- Boarding and check-out times are set by the houseboat operator, usually boarding around noon and disembarking after breakfast. Plan the Thekkady to Alleppey drive to arrive by late morning.
- Luggage: houseboat cabins are compact. Pack an overnight bag and leave the large suitcases locked in the car, which stays near the jetty.
- Which jetty: Alleppey has several boarding points around Punnamada lake and the Finishing Point, and Kumarakom's resorts have their own. Send the operator's jetty name so the chauffeur goes straight there.
- Licensed boats: Kerala's tourism department registers houseboats and publishes guidelines; choose an operator that displays its registration.
- Shared or private: a private boat for your party is quieter than a shared day cruise, and many families prefer the extra space for children.
- Monsoon cruising: boats run through much of the rainy season, but cruising can be restricted on very rough days, in which case the boat stays moored in a sheltered canal.
A slow afternoon in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
Most itineraries end back near Kochi, and the old port deserves more than a quick stop. Start at the Chinese fishing nets on the beach road in late afternoon, when the fishermen raise and lower them against the sunset. Walk past St Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was first buried, and the Santa Cruz Basilica. In Mattancherry, the Dutch Palace holds Kerala murals, and Jew Town's lanes lead to the Paradesi Synagogue and a row of antique and spice shops. The streets are narrow and best explored on foot, so the chauffeur parks at a nearby lot and meets you at an agreed corner. In the Kochi-Muziris Biennale years, contemporary art venues fill the old warehouses along the waterfront.
Kumarakom and the Vembanad lake
Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad lake about 80 km from Kochi airport, is the quieter alternative to Alleppey. Lake resorts, the bird sanctuary (best in the winter migration months) and short houseboat or shikara-style cruises make it ideal for couples and for a relaxed last night before flying out. Many travellers take a day cruise from Kumarakom instead of an overnight houseboat, which means the chauffeur is back with the car by evening and there is no jetty night. Kottayam, a short drive away, is the gateway for church and temple visits in central Travancore.
Ayurveda retreats on a Kerala road trip
Kerala is the home of classical Ayurveda, and many visitors build a stay at a treatment centre into the tour. Proper therapies such as panchakarma need a minimum number of days, often a week or more, prescribed after a consultation. Centres are spread from Kovalam and Varkala in the south to the Kochi and Thrissur region and the hill resorts. A good pattern is to tour first and settle into the retreat at the end; the chauffeur drops you on the last touring day and returns to collect you for the airport on the date you choose, with the drop and the pickup priced as single transfers rather than keeping the car idle. The monsoon months are traditionally considered the best season for treatments.
Adding Wayanad, Coorg or Mysuru
North of the classic route, Wayanad's spice plantations, Edakkal caves and Banasura dam are about 270 km from Kochi, a long day's drive through Thrissur and Kozhikode. From Wayanad, Mysuru is about 120 km across the Bandipur forest road, and Coorg is within reach too, which turns a Kerala tour into a south India loop ending in Bengaluru. Night traffic is restricted on the forest roads through Bandipur, so we cross in daylight. Our Mysore taxi service and the Bangalore to Coorg taxi route cover the Karnataka side. Interstate permits for the Karnataka section are added at actual cost.
Eating well on the road
Much of the pleasure of a Kerala drive is in the food, and chauffeurs know the reliable stops. Expect appam with stew or puttu and kadala for breakfast, a banana-leaf meals lunch in the hills, karimeen (pearl spot) fry and toddy-shop curries near the backwaters, and fresh seafood at Kovalam and Fort Kochi. Tea estates around Munnar run tasting rooms, and Kumily's spice shops sell cardamom, pepper and vanilla straight from the plantations. Coconut and curry leaves appear in almost everything, so ask for milder dishes if children are travelling. Tell the chauffeur about dietary needs, whether pure vegetarian, Jain or no seafood, and he will pick restaurants accordingly.
When to go, and what each season brings
Kerala is a year-round destination, but each season is different:
- September to March: the main touring season. Cool nights in Munnar, calm backwaters, pleasant beaches. Christmas and New Year week is the busiest, with prices and crowds to match; book houseboats and cars well in advance.
- April to May: hot and humid on the coast, but Munnar and Thekkady stay comfortable. Thrissur Pooram falls in this window.
- June to September: the southwest monsoon. Heavy rain, lush green hills and waterfalls at their fullest, and the traditional season for Ayurveda treatments. Some ghat roads see landslides after very heavy spells, so we keep plans flexible. Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, arrives in August or September, and the Nehru Trophy snake boat race on Punnamada lake near Alleppey is usually held in August.
Munnar's famous Neelakurinji bloom, which colours the hills blue, happens only once every twelve years, so it is a special event rather than a regular feature.
The right car for Kerala's roads
Kerala's hill roads are narrow, well surfaced and full of hairpin bends, and there is a lot of oncoming bus traffic. A comfortable, high-seated car makes the difference on the Munnar and Thekkady legs:
- Sedan (Swift Dzire class): fine for couples, with room for two large suitcases.
- Innova Crysta: the most booked car for Kerala tours; it absorbs the bends better, seats six and carries more luggage. See Innova Crysta on rent.
- Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania: for groups and extended families; the Tempo Traveller in Kochi page has seat plans.
- Luxury cars: a Mercedes or BMW for honeymooners is available on request through luxury car rental, and decorated cars for a Kerala wedding through wedding car rental.
Every vehicle is within four model years and carries commercial tourist permits. Chauffeurs on Kerala tours are experienced on the ghat roads; tell us your preferred language when booking and the desk will try to match it.
Practical tips for a Kerala road trip
- Start the hill legs early. Munnar and Thekkady roads are slower after dark, and mist can settle on the ghats in the evening, so we plan to arrive before sunset.
- Motion sickness: the Munnar ghat has many hairpins. Sit in the middle row of an Innova Crysta rather than the back, eat lightly before the climb and ask the chauffeur for a break whenever you need one.
- Cash and cards: larger hotels and restaurants take cards and UPI, but spice shops, toddy shops and small tea stalls prefer cash.
- Dress for temples: many Kerala temples admit only Hindus to the inner areas, and men may be asked to remove shirts and wear a mundu. Check at each temple.
- Hartals and local strikes: occasionally a statewide shutdown affects road travel for a day. We watch for announcements and adjust the plan so you do not lose the day.
- Plastic rules: Kerala restricts single-use plastics in many tourist areas; carry a reusable water bottle.
Honeymoons, families and NRIs coming home
Kerala tours fall into a few familiar shapes. Honeymoon couples often choose a slower plan with two nights in Munnar, a private houseboat and a beach finish in Kovalam or Marari. Families with children like Thekkady's jungle walks and the spice plantations, where guides let children taste pepper and cardamom straight from the plant. Keralites living abroad often combine a family event with a short tour for visiting relatives; see NRI car hire in India for longer arrangements with the same car.
If you would rather stay in one place and take day trips, base yourself in Kochi with a car rental with driver in Kochi at Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hours / 80 km, or use the taxi service in Kochi for single rides.
