Ooty is one of those drives where the chauffeur matters as much as the car. The Bangalore to Ooty taxi run crosses two tiger reserves with fixed gate timings, enters a Tamil Nadu district that asks every vehicle for an e-pass, and finishes on a ghat road where brakes, gears and patience are tested on every bend. RutzIndia.com prices it per kilometre with no surprises, and sends drivers who have climbed to Udhagamandalam many times, in April holiday traffic and in December frost.
How much is a Bangalore to Ooty taxi in 2026?
Fares updated September 2026.
A Bangalore to Ooty one way taxi is Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan (270 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. A two-day round trip covers 540 km, so it is Rs 19,440 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan or Rs 30,780 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova, before 5% GST, with tolls and permits at actual.
Round trips follow one rule: we charge whichever is higher, the true return distance or 250 km per calendar day. For Ooty that means a two-day return is billed on the full 540 km, while a three-day holiday moves up to the 750 km minimum. Most families who want Coonoor, Pykara and the Botanical Garden in one visit find the three-day plan the most relaxed.
| Vehicle | Per km | One way (270 km) | 2-day return (540 km) | 3-day return (750 km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan: Dzire, Amaze, Aura | Rs 36 | Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,440 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| MUV: Ertiga, Carens | Rs 42 | Rs 11,340 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,680 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 31,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | Rs 57.6 | Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 30,780 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Premium SUV: Fortuner | Rs 84 | Rs 22,680 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 45,360 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller 12-16 seat | Rs 78 | Rs 21,060 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,120 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
Because this trip crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, a Karnataka-registered taxi pays the inter-state permit or border tax at the checkpost. We pass that on at the exact receipted amount rather than folding a guess into the fare. The same applies to expressway tolls near Mysuru, any entry fee or green tax the Nilgiris checkposts collect, and paid parking at Ooty Lake or Doddabetta. The chauffeur's night allowance on multi-day trips is Rs 1,500 a night. Everything above is before 5% GST, and businesses booking an offsite get a GST invoice automatically.

The road: Mysuru, Bandipur, Mudumalai and the climb
From Bangalore the car first heads to Mysuru on the access-controlled expressway, then south through Nanjangud and Gundlupet on the highway towards the Kerala and Tamil Nadu borders. After Gundlupet the scenery changes quickly: teak and bamboo close in and you enter Bandipur Tiger Reserve on the Karnataka side, then cross into Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu near Theppakadu. Elephants, gaur and spotted deer are common roadside sights, and speed breakers are frequent for good reason.
The 9 pm forest rule
Vehicle movement through Bandipur and Mudumalai on this corridor is barred at night, roughly from 9 pm to 6 am, to protect wildlife. That single rule shapes the whole plan. If you leave Bangalore after about 1 pm, you risk reaching the forest gate after it shuts and waiting until morning. Our drivers schedule departures so the forest section is crossed in daylight, and on the return they leave Ooty early enough to clear Theppakadu well before closing. You can read more about the reserve on the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve website.
Kallatti ghat or the Gudalur road
After Mudumalai there are two ways up to Ooty, and your chauffeur will choose based on the car, the load and the conditions on the day.
- Masinagudi and the Kallatti ghat - the shortest option, famous for its 36 hairpin bends and steep gradients. It saves time but is demanding, and authorities have at times restricted it for outside vehicles or for downhill traffic. We only use it when it is open to us and the car is suitable.
- Gudalur and Naduvattam - longer but gentler, the road most buses use, with tea estates and the Pykara side opening up near the top. This is the default for Tempo Travellers and for anyone prone to motion sickness.
On either road, hill-driving norms apply: uphill traffic has right of way, horns before blind corners, low gear on the descent, and no overtaking on hairpins. Our chauffeurs follow them without being asked.
Ooty drive at a glance: kilometres, hours and checkposts
| Stage | About km | Usual time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangalore to Mysuru on the expressway | 145 | 2 hrs 15 min to 2 hrs 30 min | tolled plazas at Kaniminike and Shesagirihalli |
| Mysuru to Gundlupet via Nanjangud | 60 | about 1 hr 15 min | busy two-lane stretches, temple traffic at Nanjangud |
| Gundlupet to Theppakadu (Bandipur and Mudumalai) | 35 | about 50 min | forest speed limits, night closure, Tamil Nadu border check for permit and e-pass |
| Theppakadu to Ooty via Masinagudi and Kallatti | 30 to 35 | about 1 hr | 36 hairpins; the Gudalur road instead adds roughly 30 km and 45 minutes |
| Door to door | about 270 | 6 to 7 hrs | tolls and state permit at actual |
The published fare uses the standard 270 km. If your group needs the gentler Gudalur road, the desk confirms the effect on the quote when you book, before you pay anything.

The Nilgiris e-pass for vehicles
Since 2024, vehicles entering the Nilgiris district have needed an e-pass, a system introduced on court directions to manage summer crowding. The Nilgiris district administration links the application from its official website, and the rules, caps and exemptions have been adjusted over time, so we check the current position when you book. In practice our desk handles the vehicle side: once your trip is confirmed, we apply for the pass with the car number and travel dates and share the confirmation with the chauffeur. You just need to tell us how many people are travelling and the dates you will enter and leave the district.
Peak weeks for the e-pass and for traffic are the April to June summer holidays, especially around the Ooty flower show in May, and the Christmas to New Year week. Book those dates early; slots for Innova Crystas fill quickly.
Stops between Bangalore and Ooty
- Mysuru for breakfast or a palace visit if you start at dawn.
- Nanjangud and its Srikanteshwara temple, right on the route.
- Gopalaswamy Betta - a hill temple inside Bandipur with a short climb by forest-department bus, when open to visitors.
- Theppakadu - the Mudumalai reception area and elephant camp.
- Pykara lake and falls - on the Gudalur side, a natural halt before the final run into Ooty.

Things to do with a round trip in Ooty
With your chauffeur staying on, a typical itinerary covers the Government Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake boating, the Rose Garden, and the drive to Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris. A second day works well for Coonoor: Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock, tea estate viewpoints, and a ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Coonoor and Ooty while the car meets you at the other station. Avalanche lake and some forest viewpoints need forest-department passes or vehicles, which the driver can guide you on.
If you would rather fly home, Coimbatore airport is about three hours down the Mettupalayam ghat, and we can end the trip there; our taxi service in Coimbatore covers airport transfers. Travelling on to Kerala is equally easy, and our Kerala tour by car can begin from Ooty.
How the taxi compares with the toy train, the bus and driving yourself
| Way to travel | The journey | Good for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train plus toy train | train to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam, then the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up to Ooty (timings on Indian Railways) | rail enthusiasts with time to spare | a full day, limited toy-train seats in season, luggage changes |
| Government or private bus | Karnataka and Tamil Nadu state transport and private operators run via Mysuru and Gudalur | solo budget travellers | fixed departures, forest-hour constraints still apply, bus-stand drop |
| Self-drive | your own or a rented car, with fuel, tolls, e-pass and permit to arrange | experienced ghat drivers | hairpin driving after a long day, no one to swap with |
| Chauffeur taxi from RutzIndia.com | door to door, e-pass handled for the vehicle, stops when you want them | families, seniors, first visits | plan a daylight crossing of the forest |
The toy train is a wonderful experience in its own right; many guests ride one section of it while their car waits at the station, which gives you the view without committing a whole day.
Travelling with children, elderly parents or a wedding party
The Nilgiri climb is long enough that comfort planning pays off. For young children and grandparents, our drivers build in a halt every 90 minutes or so, usually at Nanjangud, Gundlupet and Theppakadu, and they keep the air-conditioning moderate on the ghat because many passengers feel queasier in a cold, closed cabin. Motion sickness is the most common complaint on this route, and the simplest remedy is the Gudalur road, a front seat for the most sensitive traveller, and a light breakfast before the forest section. Carry a warm layer even in May; Ooty evenings can drop sharply once the sun goes behind the eucalyptus.
Ooty and Coonoor also host a steady stream of small hill weddings and anniversary getaways, especially from November to February. If you are moving a family group for such an event, the travel desk can split guests across sedans, Innova Crystas and a Tempo Traveller, co-ordinate staggered departures so everyone clears the forest gate on time, and handle the e-pass for every vehicle in one go. Luggage for functions (garment bags, gift hampers, sweets) travels better in an Innova or a Traveller with its rear bench folded.
Where we pick up and drop off
Bangalore pickups include Kempegowda airport (with flight tracking, a name board, 60 minutes of free wait after international arrivals and 30 after domestic, then hourly billing), Whitefield, Marathahalli, Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, JP Nagar, Yeshwanthpur, Hebbal and Sadashivanagar. In the Nilgiris we drop at Ooty town, Charing Cross, Fern Hill, Lovedale, Ketti, Coonoor, Kotagiri and the resorts towards Pykara and Emerald. Private cottages on estate lanes are fine; just share the pin so the chauffeur can plan the last kilometre.

Our travel desk can sequence these around toy-train timings and the Botanical Garden, and the fleet page shows every car class available for hill duty.
Picking a car for the Nilgiri ghats
A sedan manages the Gudalur road comfortably for two to four adults. For a family with children and luggage, or for anyone planning Kallatti, an Innova Crysta on rent gives more power, space and stability on the hairpins. Groups of 10 or more take a Tempo Traveller; see Tempo Traveller hire in Bangalore for layouts. All cars are within four model years and serviced before hill duty, with particular attention to brakes and tyres.
Booking steps and cancellation
- Open the booker, choose one way or round trip, and enter your Ooty address.
- Add passenger count and travel dates so we can arrange the e-pass.
- Pay by card or UPI; the chauffeur's name and car number reach you the evening before.
- Toll, permit and parking receipts are settled at the end of the trip.
Cancelling more than 72 hours out costs nothing. Within 72 hours there is a 10% charge, within 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or on a no-show 100%, as our cancellation policy explains. You can also combine Ooty with our Bangalore to Coorg taxi route for a longer loop, or begin with a simple Bangalore to Mysore taxi if you want only the palace city. For local and airport hire before you leave, see taxi service in Bangalore.
