A vintage car for wedding photographs does something no modern car can: it makes the day look like it belongs to another, slower century. An open tourer with a folded canvas hood, whitewall tyres and a bonnet heavy with roses, rolling behind the dhol at the pace of the baraat, is the image many couples plan around. RutzIndia.com arranges vintage and classic cars on rent for the groom's entry, the doli after the vidaai and the portrait session in between, together with the modern cars and guest fleet the rest of the day needs.
How a vintage car for wedding is priced
Vintage cars for weddings are quoted on request, because every car is individual and the price depends on the date, the city, the hours and how far the car must travel. A modern follow car is always recommended: an Innova Crysta from Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve or a Mercedes E-Class from Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve for a short slot, before 5% GST.
We do not publish a single vintage price because there is no honest one. A 1940s-style open tourer that lives in a private collection ten minutes from your venue costs very differently from a classic saloon that must be trailered in from another city. What we do publish is exactly how the quote is built, so you can compare it line by line with anyone else's.
| Quote component | What it covers | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage car slot | The car, its regular driver-handler and the agreed hours at the venue | Quoted per booking, usually a minimum block of a few hours |
| Positioning | Moving the car to your venue: driven gently for short distances, on a closed or flatbed carrier for longer ones | Quoted per trip, depends on distance |
| Follow car | A modern car that shadows the vintage car and takes over if it overheats | Innova Crysta Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve (4 hr/40 km), E-Class Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve (4 hr/40 km) |
| Decoration | Fresh flowers fitted with soft mounts; canopy frames for open cars | Florist's actual cost |
| Extras | Parking, venue entry charges, permits on interstate positioning | At actual cost, with receipts |
All rupee figures are before 5% GST. If the booking spans more than one day away from the car's home city, the chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night is added. Nothing is bundled invisibly: you see each line before paying.

Vintage wedding car packages: 3, 5 and 8 hours
The same three slot lengths we use for modern wedding cars apply to vintage cars, but the vintage price is quoted for each car. The modern cars in the table are the follow and family cars that go with it, and their fares are fixed. A 3-hour slot is billed on our 4 hr/40 km package, the 5-hour option adds one hour at one-eighth of the full-day fare, and the 8-hour option is the standard 8 hr/80 km day.
| Car | 3 hours | 5 hours | 8 hours | Decoration that suits it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open tourer or convertible | quoted | quoted | rarely advised | Floral canopy frame over the rear seat |
| Classic closed saloon | quoted | quoted | quoted | Bonnet spray and ribbon on the spare wheel |
| Vintage-styled recreation | quoted | quoted | quoted | Fuller arrangement; more tolerant of weight |
| Follow car: Innova Crysta | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,130 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Not decorated; carries the handler's kit |
| Follow car: Mercedes E-Class | Rs 22,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,190 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 37,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Matching posies if it doubles as the bride's car |
Modern fares are base-city figures before 5% GST; Mumbai is about 10% higher and Jaipur about 5% lower. An open tourer is almost never booked for a full eight hours, because old engines and open cabins tire in heat and traffic; the usual pattern is a 3-hour ceremonial slot for the baraat, and a second short slot later for the doli. Decoration on any vintage car is priced at the florist's actual cost and kept lighter than on a modern car, since old paint and chrome are harder to replace. There is also a classic car versus vintage car distinction that collectors care about; for a wedding, what matters is the look, the condition and the handler.
The vintage and classic styles couples ask for
"Vintage" covers several quite different cars, and it helps to know which look you want before you ask for a quote.
Open tourers and convertibles
These are the cars of the classic Indian wedding photograph: long bonnet, running boards, a fold-down hood and seats high enough that the groom is visible over the crowd. They are ideal for the baraat entry and for daylight portraits, and they are the rarest and most weather-sensitive of the lot.
Classic closed saloons
A classic saloon offers the same period look with a roof, which matters in the Mumbai monsoon, a Delhi January night or a Chennai afternoon. It is often the more sensible doli car, because the bride and groom are sheltered on the way home and the lehenga is not caught by wind.
Vintage-styled recreations
Some wedding cars that look vintage are modern recreations built on newer mechanicals. They are more reliable in heat and traffic, and there is nothing wrong with them, but you should know what you are paying for. We always tell you whether a car is a genuine period vehicle or a recreation before you confirm.
Indian classics
A few couples want a car their grandparents would recognise, the kind of rounded Indian saloon that once filled every city road. These are nostalgic, affordable to decorate and loved by photographers. Availability is patchy and city-specific, so ask early.

Doli car for wedding: the ride after the vidaai
The word doli comes from the covered palanquin in which a bride was once carried from her parents' home to her new one. Today the doli is almost always a car, and choosing a vintage car for that moment brings back some of the old ceremony. The emotional weight of the vidaai means the logistics must be invisible:
- The car is decorated, cooled or aired, and positioned at the exit before the rituals end, facing the direction of travel so there is no reversing through the crowd.
- The handler keeps the engine warm but not idling for long, which old cars dislike.
- Rice, flower petals and coins are part of the farewell in many families; the chauffeur leaves a gap between car and crowd so that nothing lands in an open cabin or on hot metal.
- If the drive to the groom's home is long, the couple transfers to a modern car a short distance away, after the photographs. The vintage car covers the ceremonial first stretch, the modern car covers the highway.
Because the vidaai often happens between midnight and three in the morning, we book it as its own timed pickup, even when it is the same car that did the baraat. That gives the handler a rest and a fresh reporting time.
Baraat entry in an open vintage car
The baraat is the hardest job you can give an old car. It crawls at walking pace for twenty to forty minutes behind a band, in the heat of lights and fireworks, surrounded by dancing relatives. A well-prepared booking accounts for that:
- Short route. We ask for the baraat's exact start point and length. Most vintage cars are happiest when the ceremonial stretch is under a kilometre and the total day stays within about 10 to 15 km.
- Stops for air. On long baraats the handler pulls briefly to one side to let the engine breathe. The band and the family are told in advance so nobody is surprised.
- Fireworks kept away. Crackers and sparklers stay well clear of a fabric hood, a fuel filler and a flower canopy. The venue's own rules usually say the same.
- A cool groom. An open car in a heavy sherwani and sehra is warm work. Water and a small fan are kept on board.
- The follow car. A modern car trails the baraat at a discreet distance. If the vintage car needs to rest, the groom finishes the last few metres on foot or in the follow car, and the photographs are already taken.

Old cars and Indian weather: plan around the season
Vintage cars in India are at their best in the wedding season proper, from November to February, when evenings are cool across North India and Rajasthan. April, May and June are harder: midday heat is unkind to old radiators, and we will suggest evening slots or a classic saloon instead of an open car. In the monsoon, from roughly June to September, open cars need a hood ready and a covered porch at the venue, and we may recommend a closed classic or a modern alternative for the doli. In the hills, winter snow from December to February can close the roads to older vehicles entirely.
Distance matters as much as season. We do not drive vintage cars on long highway runs between cities. For a Jaipur palace wedding with a Delhi family, the vintage car is sourced locally or trailered, and the guests travel in an Innova Crysta, a Tempo Traveller or a coach; see wedding car rental in Jaipur and luxury car rental in Udaipur for how the rest of the fleet is planned.
Vintage car for wedding in Delhi and other cities
Delhi has long been a centre of India's classic car culture, and its farmhouse venues along the Chhatarpur and Mehrauli belt, with their long driveways, suit a vintage baraat beautifully. The capital's annual classic car gathering, organised by the 21 Gun Salute heritage trust, gives a sense of how many period cars are cared for in and around the city. Our wedding cars in Delhi page covers venue access and timing there, and the luxury car rental in Delhi page lists the modern ceremonial cars that pair well with a vintage one.
Jaipur and Udaipur pair vintage cars with palace backdrops, though palace grounds may restrict movement and gate widths, which we check first. Mumbai has classic cars in private hands but tight streets and heavy monsoon rain; see Mumbai wedding cars. Lucknow's nawabi-style weddings suit classic saloons well, and the Lucknow wedding cars page covers venues there. Kolkata has a proud old-car tradition (the Kolkata taxi service page covers the city's roads), and Chandigarh and Bangalore have active enthusiast circles; for modern cars in the Tricity see luxury car rental in Chandigarh. In any city, the honest answer on availability for a specific date comes from the desk, not from a web page, so send your date and venue early through the contact page.
The support fleet around a vintage car
A vintage car carries two people. Everything else moves in modern vehicles, and planning them together avoids gaps. Three common set-ups, priced for one 8-hour day in a base city:
| Set-up | Vehicles alongside the vintage car | 8 hr total for the modern cars |
|---|---|---|
| Intimate farmhouse wedding | 1 Innova follow car + 1 Tempo Traveller for family | Rs 32,100 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mid-size baraat with parents' car | 1 E-Class follow and bride's car + 2 Innovas + 2 Tempo Travellers | Rs 1,01,700 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Large wedding with hotel shuttles | 1 Innova follow car + 1 Vellfire for grandparents + 4 Innovas + 1 mini bus | Rs 1,59,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
Totals exclude the vintage car itself (quoted separately), 5% GST, parking and tolls. Larger groups can add a coach; see bus on rent for seat options.
A vintage car's wedding day, hour by hour
This is how a Delhi evening baraat with a vintage tourer usually unfolds:
| Time | What happens to the vintage car |
|---|---|
| 2:00 pm | Car arrives on its carrier or is driven gently to a shaded spot near the groom's venue |
| 3:30 pm | Handler checks coolant, oil and tyres; hood set up or folded as the weather needs |
| 4:30 pm | Florist fits the canopy and bonnet flowers |
| 5:45 pm | Golden-hour portraits with the groom, about 30 minutes |
| 7:00 pm | Baraat begins; car follows the band at walking pace with the follow car behind |
| 7:45 pm | Groom steps out at the gate; car moves to its waiting spot and cools down |
| 1:30 am | Car repositioned at the exit, flowers refreshed, ready for the doli |
| 2:15 am | Vidaai; couple rides the ceremonial stretch, then transfers to the modern car if the journey is long |
Questions to ask before you confirm a vintage car
Whoever you book with, these questions protect the day:
- Is this a genuine period car or a recreation? Either is fine, but you should know.
- Can I see recent photographs of this exact car, not a catalogue image?
- Who drives it? The best answer is the handler who maintains it, not a stranger.
- Is the registration valid, and is the car insured? Papers should be in the car on the day.
- What happens if it overheats? The answer should involve a follow car, not a promise.
- Is there a hood, and how long does it take to raise? Essential in the monsoon or on a dewy winter night.
- How will it reach the venue? Driven gently, or on a carrier, and when.
- What are the decoration limits? Weight, fixing points and areas the owner wants left bare.
Our written quote addresses each of these before you pay.
Getting the photographs right
A vintage car is bought, in effect, for photographs, so give the photographer a proper window. Ask for the car 45 minutes before the baraat moves for a quiet portrait session. Chrome, polished wood and spoke wheels photograph best in soft light, so the last hour before sunset is ideal for open-air portraits. Keep decoration lighter than on a modern car: a spray on the bonnet and small posies on the doors let the lines of the car show. Tell the handler where the photographer will stand; he will angle the car so the grille and the couple are both in the frame.
Booking, cancellation and the fine print
Share the date, venue, function timings and the look you want, and the desk will come back with the available cars, photographs of each and a written quote. Payment is by card or UPI through the booker once you confirm, with a GST invoice in your chosen name. Our standing cancellation policy applies: free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% of the fare within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on a no-show.
On vehicle age: our rule for modern cars is four model years, and seven for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach. Vintage cars are the obvious exception, and we select them for mechanical condition, a regular handler who knows the car, and valid registration papers, which you can verify on the government's Parivahan portal. If you would rather have a modern ceremonial car, the Rolls-Royce wedding car gives a comparable sense of occasion with far fewer weather worries, and the main car rental for wedding page shows how to put the whole day's fleet together.
