Kochi is where most journeys into Kerala begin, and it is a city of islands, backwaters and bridges. The airport at Nedumbassery is a long drive north of Ernakulam, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry sit across the water to the west, and the Infopark offices in Kakkanad lie to the east. Ferries and the metro help, but when you have luggage, elderly parents or several stops, car rental with driver in Kochi is the easy way to hold it all together. RutzIndia.com gives you one car and one chauffeur for 4 hours, 8 hours or a 12-hour day at a fixed rupee price, and prices trips to Munnar, Alleppey and Thekkady by the kilometre.
Car rental with driver in Kochi: rates
In Kochi, a Dzire with its chauffeur costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve for the standard day of eight hours with 80 km, or Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve for a four-hour, 40 km slot. An Innova Crysta costs Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve for the full day. A CIAL airport transfer of up to 40 km starts at Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve. Fares are before 5% GST, with tolls and parking charged at actual cost.

All prices exclude 5% GST, and hourly figures are rounded to the nearest ten rupees.

Arriving at CIAL: the airport and the NRI homecoming
Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is roughly 30 km from Ernakulam's MG Road and further still from Fort Kochi, so the first drive of your trip is a real one. It is also one of India's busiest airports for Gulf flights, and many of our Kochi bookings are families coming home: a Dzire or Innova at the arrivals kerb, a chauffeur holding a name board, and then a day of visits to relatives in Ernakulam, Aluva or Thrissur before reaching the family home.
The chauffeur follows your flight, so an early or late landing is not a problem. After touchdown, international passengers get an hour of free waiting and domestic passengers half an hour; beyond that, the time counts at the hourly rate in the table. If you only need the ride home, the Kochi airport taxi page books the transfer on its own. For a longer visit with several relatives and errands, start a package at the airport, and see NRI car hire in India for multi-week arrangements with the same chauffeur.
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry at your own pace
The old port town is best seen slowly. Begin at the Chinese fishing nets on the Fort Kochi waterfront in the early morning, walk to St Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was first buried, and the Santa Cruz Basilica, then drive the short distance to Mattancherry for the Dutch Palace murals, the Paradesi Synagogue and the antique shops of Jew Town. Check closing days before you go; the synagogue and the palace each close on certain days of the week. The Kerala Tourism site lists timings for the main sites and the evening Kathakali performances in Fort Kochi.
The lanes here are narrow and parking is limited, especially around the Biennale venues in the winter months of a Biennale year. The chauffeur drops you at one end of a street and meets you at the other, which is precisely what a hired car is good for. A Fort Kochi and Mattancherry day from an Ernakulam hotel is usually well inside 8 hours and 80 km.

Business days in Ernakulam, Kakkanad and Willingdon Island
Kochi's commercial map is spread across the water. Banks and retail sit along MG Road and Marine Drive in Ernakulam; IT firms fill Infopark and SmartCity at Kakkanad; the port, the shipyard and logistics offices are on Willingdon Island and around the Vallarpadam container terminal; and industrial units cluster at Kalamassery and Aluva. Moving between them by separate rides wastes time at every junction, especially around the Vyttila hub and Edappally in the evening.
A worked example: an Innova Crysta meets a visiting team at CIAL at 8 am, takes them to Kakkanad for meetings, to Willingdon Island after lunch, and drops them at a Fort Kochi hotel at 6 pm after about 85 km. The day ran two hours longer than the package, which is 2 x Rs 1,560 Pay Now to Reserve, and five kilometres further, which is 5 x Rs 57.6 or Rs 290. Put those on top of the Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve day and the bill is about Rs 16,010 Pay Now to Reserve, plus GST and parking. Companies can book this regularly on a corporate car rental account with monthly GST invoicing.
The Kochi Metro and the Water Metro are useful for short solo hops, and a half-day package can fill the gaps they leave.
Chauffeur, self-drive or app cabs in Kochi?
App cabs work well for a single ride within Ernakulam, and our Kochi taxi service handles fixed-fare point-to-point bookings. They are less convenient for a string of stops, for luggage-heavy airport days, or for late evenings in Fort Kochi. Self-drive in Kochi asks you to handle heavy two-wheeler traffic, narrow bridges, monsoon downpours and, if you go up to Munnar, long stretches of hairpin bends. A local chauffeur who drives the ghat roads regularly takes that burden off you.
| Getting around Kochi | Self-drive | App cab, auto or ferry | Chauffeur-driven car on a package |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIAL to Fort Kochi with luggage | 40-plus km through Aluva and Edappally traffic | Fine for one ride | Name board, luggage loaded, same car afterwards |
| Crossing between Ernakulam, the islands and Kakkanad | You manage bridges and parking | Several modes, several tickets | One car across every bridge |
| Monsoon downpours | Waterlogged roads, you at the wheel | Harder to find a ride | Driver reroutes, you stay dry |
| Hairpins on the way to Munnar | Long ghat drive yourself | Not practical | Chauffeur who drives the ghat regularly |
| Money up front | Deposit and licence checks | Nothing | Fixed fare, free cancellation beyond 72 hours |
| Suits | Residents on short runs | A quick solo hop | Families, NRI visits, business days, hill trips |

Stations, the cruise terminal and the ferries
Kochi's two main railway stations are both in Ernakulam: Ernakulam Junction (often called South) handles most long-distance services, and Ernakulam Town (North) sits near Kaloor and Kacheripady. Aluva, to the north, is the more convenient station for the airport and for travellers heading straight to Munnar. Tell us which station, train and coach, and the chauffeur meets you at the right exit. Cruise passengers arriving at the terminal on Willingdon Island often have a single day ashore; a 4 hr or 8 hr package from the wharf covers Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and a backwater viewpoint and returns you well before sailing.
Ferries and the Water Metro remain the most atmospheric way to cross the harbour, and a chauffeur can drop you at a jetty in Ernakulam, drive round to Fort Kochi and meet you on the other side, so you enjoy the crossing without being left without a car.
Areas we cover in and around Kochi
A package can start and end anywhere in greater Kochi. The pickups we see most often include:
- Ernakulam city: MG Road, Marine Drive, Kacheripady, Kaloor, Kadavanthra, Panampilly Nagar, Elamkulam, Vyttila, Palarivattom, Edappally
- East and IT belt: Kakkanad, Infopark, SmartCity, Thrikkakara, Thrippunithura, Maradu
- Islands and west: Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island, Bolgatty, Vallarpadam, Vypeen, Cherai
- North: Kalamassery, Eloor, Aluva, Angamaly, Nedumbassery and the airport
For one-off rides inside these areas, cab booking is faster than a package. If you are leaving Kochi and do not need the car to wait, one way taxi prices the single leg.

Monsoon, Onam and the Kerala calendar
The southwest monsoon arrives in early June and stays until September, bringing heavy rain, waterlogged roads in parts of the city and slow traffic; it is also when Kerala is at its greenest and quietest. Onam, in August or September, begins with the Athachamayam procession at Tripunithura and ends with family feasts across the state, and roads to hometowns are busy. Christmas is a big celebration in Fort Kochi, and the Cochin Carnival there sees in the New Year. Weddings, including many at the Guruvayur temple north of the city, keep cars busy through the auspicious months. For the ceremony itself, look at wedding car rental and luxury car rental, and move a wedding party in a Tempo Traveller in Kochi.
Hospitals, Ayurveda and longer stays
Kochi is a regional centre for medical care, with large hospitals at Edappally, Cheranalloor and Maradu, and many visitors combine treatment with a stay at an Ayurveda centre elsewhere in Kerala. Both involve repeated trips over days or weeks: consultations, scans, follow-ups, and the drive to and from a treatment resort. A car with driver on 8-hour days keeps an elderly patient comfortable, and the chauffeur can collect prescriptions or meals while the family stays at the bedside. For stays of a month or more, the desk can quote a single arrangement with the same driver.
Sabarimala season and temple travel
From mid-November to January, the Mandala and Makaravilakku season brings pilgrims to Sabarimala from across South India, and Kochi is a common starting point. Private vehicles generally stop at the Nilakkal base camp, from where pilgrims continue to Pamba by the state transport buses, so the chauffeur drops you at Nilakkal and waits or returns according to your plan. The trip is billed as outstation, at the car's per-km rate with at least 250 km for each calendar day and a night allowance if you stay over. Demand is very high in the season, so book early, and follow the temple board's current rules on vehicle passes and timings.
Closer to the city, the Chottanikkara temple near Thrippunithura and the Guruvayur temple to the north are popular with families, and both fit a day package.
Cherai, Vypeen and an evening by the sea
When the day's work is done, many visitors head north across the Goshree bridges to Vypeen island and Cherai beach, where the backwaters run parallel to the sea. It is a pleasant drive of an hour or so from Ernakulam, and with a 4-hour package you can watch the sunset, eat at a seafood shack and be back at your hotel without looking for a ride in the dark.
Munnar, Alleppey, Thekkady, Athirappilly and Guruvayur
Outside the city, billing is per kilometre, and every calendar day of a round trip is charged for at least 250 km. Staying overnight adds the chauffeur's allowance of Rs 1,500 per night, and any tolls or interstate permits are charged as paid. Examples before GST:
- Alleppey houseboat day: roughly 110 to 120 km there and back, so the 250 km day minimum applies: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire. The chauffeur can drop you at the jetty in the morning and meet the boat in the evening.
- Athirappilly falls for the day: about 140 km in all, again billed at the day minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta.
- Guruvayur temple visit: roughly 170 km there and back, billed at the day minimum of Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire.
- Munnar over two days, Innova Crysta: the round trip is only about 260 km, but two days away are charged for 500 km, which at Rs 57.6 a km comes to Rs 28,500, with the chauffeur's single night added on top. The climb from Kothamangalam onward is a ghat road, so allow time.
- Munnar and Thekkady over three days, Innova Crysta: roughly 450 km, billed at the three-day minimum of 750 km: 750 x Rs 57.6 = Rs 42,750 plus two nights.
For a week-long circuit through the hills, backwaters and beaches, the Kerala tour by car page sets out itineraries with one chauffeur throughout, and outstation cabs explains multi-day billing in detail. An Innova Crysta on rent is the most requested car for these hill trips.
Choosing a car for Kerala roads
Kerala's roads are narrow by national standards and busy with buses, two-wheelers and pedestrians, and the hill roads to Munnar and Thekkady are a long series of bends. A Dzire is nimble and economical for two people in the city. For a family with suitcases, or for any trip into the hills, the Innova Crysta's height, ground clearance and captain seats make a real difference to comfort, and it copes better with the rougher stretches after heavy rain. Groups of ten or more, such as a wedding party or a pilgrimage group heading to Guruvayur, should take a Tempo Traveller so the whole party moves as one.
Booking and cancellation
The fleet page lists every class, and multi-car wedding or conference plans are quoted by the travel desk. If you are timing a pickup, the Cochin International Airport entry explains its separate domestic and international terminals.
Choose Kochi, the package and the car, then book online; pay by card or UPI, and add a GSTIN for a business invoice. The chauffeur's details come through before pickup. All cars are within four model years, with Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach allowed up to seven. You can cancel free of charge until 72 hours before pickup; after that 10% of the fare is kept, rising to 50% in the final 48 hours and to the full fare in the last 24 hours or for a no-show. The cancellation policy gives the full wording.
