Coming home should not start with an argument at a taxi counter. Car hire for NRIs on RutzIndia.com is built around the way families actually travel back to India: a night flight from London, Toronto, Dubai or Singapore, two or three suitcases each, jet-lagged parents, and a hometown that is often a four- or five-hour drive from the international airport. You book from abroad, pay online, and a chauffeur tracks your flight, waits at arrivals with a name board and drives you home. If you need a car and driver in India for the rest of your stay, the same booking can continue.
Car hire for NRIs: airport and hometown fares
Car hire for NRIs starts at Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan airport pickup in Delhi (Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta), with 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing. Airport to hometown trips are billed per km: Delhi to Jaipur is Rs 10,080 by sedan and Rs 15,960 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova, before 5% GST, tolls and permits.
Airport transfers are fixed prices for up to 40 km and carry a small city adjustment, never below the minimum fare that applies in that city; hometown trips are one-way per-km fares from the facts on our fare chart. Tolls, state entry permits and airport parking are passed on at actual cost with receipts.
| Arrival airport to destination | Approx. distance | Sedan (Dzire) | Innova Crysta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi IGI to South or Central Delhi | within 40 km | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mumbai CSMIA to South Mumbai or Thane | within 40 km | Rs 4,360 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,620 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Bangalore KIA to the city | within 40 km | Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,290 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Amritsar airport to the city | within 40 km | Rs 3,640 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Chandigarh | about 245 km | Rs 8,820 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 13,970 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Jaipur | about 280 km | Rs 10,080 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,960 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Amritsar | about 450 km | Rs 16,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,650 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mumbai to Pune | about 150 km | Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Bangalore to Mysore | about 145 km | Rs 5,220 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,270 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Hyderabad to Vijayawada | about 275 km | Rs 9,900 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,670 Pay Now to Reserve |
Intercity distances are measured city to city; starting at the airport can add or remove a few kilometres, and the booker calculates the exact figure from your pickup and drop addresses before you pay.

How your arrival works
International arrivals in India follow a familiar sequence: immigration, baggage belt, customs, then the arrivals hall. At Delhi's Terminal 3 or Mumbai's Terminal 2 after a wide-body landing, that can take anywhere from 30 minutes to well over an hour. Our process is designed around that uncertainty.
- Flight tracking. You give us the flight number at booking. The desk watches the actual landing time, so an early or late arrival does not leave you waiting or cost you money.
- Free waiting. The chauffeur waits free for 60 minutes from the actual international landing time (30 minutes for a domestic connection). If your bags are slow, WhatsApp the driver; after the free period, waiting is billed at the class hourly rate, which is Rs 900 an hour for a sedan.
- Name board at arrivals. The chauffeur stands at the designated meeting area with your name on a board, and his name and car number are sent to you in advance.
- Luggage help. He helps load the bags and checks the count with you before leaving the kerb.
- Straight home or first stop. If you want a SIM card counter, an ATM or a quick chai before the highway, just say so.
Terminal information, arrivals hall layouts and meeting points are published on the official Delhi Airport and Bengaluru Airport websites. For entry rules, e-arrival formalities and immigration updates, the government's Bureau of Immigration is the authoritative source. City-specific pages such as Delhi airport taxi, Kochi airport taxi and Amritsar airport taxi list terminal pickup points.
Travelling with elderly parents? Tell the desk at booking. We will send a car with a higher seat, such as an Innova Crysta, and the chauffeur will bring a trolley to the kerb and help with the wheelchair-to-car transfer if the airline's assistance staff hand over at the exit.
Choosing a car when you arrive with luggage
Long-haul economy allowances usually mean two large checked bags per person plus cabin bags, and families returning for a wedding carry even more. Pick the car for the luggage, not just the passengers:
- One or two people, up to three large bags: a compact sedan such as a Dzire. Economical for short airport runs.
- Two to three people, four bags: a premium sedan (Honda City, Camry) has a deeper boot and a quieter ride for a long highway leg.
- A family of four with six to eight bags: an Innova Crysta. It seats six, but with heavy luggage plan for four adults so the third row can fold for suitcases.
- Parents plus a large family: a Toyota Vellfire or Kia Carnival for comfort, or a Fortuner if the hometown involves rough village roads.
- Eight or more relatives meeting the flight: a Tempo Traveller on rent takes everyone and the luggage in one vehicle.
Every car is within four model years of age and fully air-conditioned, which matters when you land into a Delhi June or a Kochi monsoon.

Popular NRI journeys from the airport
Punjab and Haryana
Many families from the UK, Canada and Australia fly into Delhi and drive north. The Delhi to Chandigarh taxi is about 245 km on the NH44, typically four and a half hours. Continuing to Ludhiana, Jalandhar or Amritsar makes a long day; the Delhi to Amritsar taxi is about 450 km and roughly eight hours with a food stop at one of the highway dhabas near Murthal or Karnal. If your airline flies direct to Amritsar, a short local transfer is far easier.
Rajasthan and Gujarat
The Delhi to Jaipur taxi runs about 280 km on the NH48, around five hours. Families heading to Gujarat usually fly on to Ahmedabad and take a local transfer from there.
Maharashtra, Karnataka and the South
From Mumbai, Pune is about 150 km by the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, roughly three hours. From Bangalore, Mysore is about 145 km. Families from the Gulf landing at Kochi often head to Thrissur, Kottayam or Alappuzha, which are local or short outstation runs from CIAL. Hyderabad arrivals bound for coastal Andhra can book the 275 km Hyderabad to Vijayawada transfer.
A car and driver for your whole visit
Once you are home, you may want a car on call for relatives' houses, the bank, property meetings, a family wedding or a pilgrimage. There are three ways to keep a driver:
- Day packages. The 8 hr / 80 km local package costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan and Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova before GST. Book only the days you need.
- A monthly car. Staying three weeks or more? A monthly car rental with driver gives you one chauffeur and one car for your working days at a monthly price built from the same day rate.
- A tour. Many NRI families use the visit to show children the country. The Golden Triangle tour by car (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) and pilgrimage taxi trips to Amritsar, Vrindavan, Haridwar or Shirdi are the most requested.
For a wedding in the family, our wedding car rental desk handles the decorated car for the couple and Innovas or Tempo Travellers for relatives, all on the same booking.

Paying from abroad and staying in touch
You book on the online booker and pay a deposit by card, or a family member in India can pay by UPI on your behalf. The balance, tolls and any extra waiting are settled online after the trip against a 5% GST invoice emailed to you. The chauffeur's WhatsApp contact is shared before your flight, so you can message on landing using airport Wi-Fi even before you buy a local SIM.
For more complex plans across several cities, our travel desk can put together cars, drivers and routes for the whole visit on one itinerary.
Changes and cancellations
Flights change, especially in winter fog season in North India from December to January. If your flight is rescheduled, update the flight number and we move the pickup free of charge. Cancelling the booking itself is free up to 72 hours before pickup; after that a 10% charge applies within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on a no-show. The full cancellation policy explains how refunds reach your card.
Airport to hometown: route fares and drive times
Most returning families face one long drive between the international airport and home. These are the journeys we run most, with typical driving times in normal traffic. Fares are one way and per kilometre; add tolls and any state entry charge at actual cost.
Fares before 5% GST. The same drive booked as a round trip, for example if you return to the airport a week later with the same car kept in between, follows the round-trip rule of at least 250 km per calendar day, so it is usually cheaper to book the two one-way legs separately when your stay is long.
Per-km rates for larger families and heavy luggage
Luggage decides the car more than headcount does after a long-haul flight. Every class is charged at the same per-km rate one way or round trip:
| Class | Seats | Realistic large-suitcase capacity | Per km | Airport transfer, Delhi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dzire / Amaze | 4 | two to three | Rs 36 | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Honda City / Camry | 4 | three to four | Rs 48 | Rs 5,940 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga / Carens | 6 | four, with the third row folded | Rs 42 | Rs 4,950 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | 6 | six to eight, with four adults | Rs 57.6 | Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner / Gloster | 6 | four to five | Rs 84 | Rs 12,360 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Vellfire / Carnival | 5 | four to five | Rs 210 | Rs 29,700 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | 12-26 | one large bag per passenger or more | Rs 78 | Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve |
Luggage capacities are practical guidance, not manufacturer figures; soft bags fit more easily than hard shells. Airport transfer prices cover up to 40 km and change with the city factor shown further down.
Crossing state borders on the way home
Very few hometown drives stay inside one state. Delhi airport to Chandigarh passes through Haryana, Delhi to Amritsar continues into Punjab, Delhi to Dehradun crosses Uttar Pradesh into Uttarakhand, and a Bangalore to Coorg drive stays in Karnataka but Bangalore to Pondicherry or Chennai does not. Commercial passenger cars in India run on state permits or an all-India tourist authorisation, available to operators under rules notified in 2021 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Even so, depending on the car's permit and the state being entered, a border crossing can involve an entry tax or permit fee.
What this means for you: the fare you see is the fare for the car and driver; any such border charge is paid by the chauffeur at the check post or online, and added to your invoice at the actual amount with the receipt. Hill states may also levy their own fees on tourist vehicles in certain areas. If a charge is likely on your route, the booking confirmation says so before you pay.
Days for banks, property and paperwork
Many NRI visits have a practical side: bank KYC updates, a visit to the sub-registrar's office for a property document, a meeting with a chartered accountant, or collecting records from an old school or municipal office. These days are rarely efficient, with queues and waiting in between, and they suit the 8 hr / 80 km local package well. The car waits outside while you sit inside, your documents stay safely in the car between stops, and you are not searching for a ride from an office on the edge of town at 5 pm. For OCI card services and related applications, the government OCI services portal is the official place to start.
Arrival airports beyond Delhi and Mumbai
Many families no longer fly into Delhi or Mumbai at all. Gulf-based Keralites often land at Kochi's Cochin International Airport, which publishes flight and terminal information on the CIAL website; Thrissur, Kottayam and Alappuzha are short drives from there. Families from the UK and North America increasingly connect through the Gulf into Amritsar, Hyderabad or Bangalore. The same arrival process applies at every airport: flight tracking, a name board and 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing. City pages such as Hyderabad airport taxi and Bangalore airport taxi show local pickup points.
Departure day without the last-minute rush
The flight back is usually late at night or in the small hours, after a last day of goodbyes, and it is where plans most often go wrong. A few habits make it calm:
- Book the airport drop when you book the arrival. Wedding-season and school-holiday departures from Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar and Kochi fill up, and a confirmed car removes one worry from the final week.
- Work back from the terminal, not the clock. For an international departure aim to reach the terminal about three hours before the flight, then add the drive time from the tables above, plus a margin for fog in North India between December and January.
- Weigh bags the day before. Gifts, sweets and pickles add up quickly. Repacking at the kerb is stressful; the chauffeur can help load, but cannot help with airline weight limits.
- Keep documents in the cabin bag. Passport or OCI card, printed or digital ticket and any visa papers should be with you, not in a suitcase in the boot.
- Share the terminal number. Delhi's IGI and Mumbai's CSMIA have more than one terminal, so check yours with the airline and tell the chauffeur, who will drop you at the correct departures level.
If your hometown is several hours away, consider a night in a hotel near the airport, such as in Delhi's Aerocity, and a short transfer the next day. The two one-way legs usually cost less than a long late-night drive with a tired family.
Airport transfer prices in all 27 cities
Airport transfers of up to 40 km carry the city factor. Here is the sedan and Innova Crysta price in every city we serve, rounded up where needed so the minimum fare applies, with the airport code it is served from.
All before 5% GST, rounded to the rupee. Gurgaon and Noida are served from Delhi's IGI; Rishikesh and Dehradun share Jolly Grant airport. Transfers beyond 40 km, such as IGI to Noida's farther sectors, are priced by the kilometre in the booker.
Useful planning notes for NRIs and OCI cardholders
- Peak season. December and January bring wedding season, school holidays abroad and heavy arrivals into Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar and Kochi. Book the airport pickup when you book your flight.
- Fog. Early-morning fog in the Indo-Gangetic plain can delay both flights and highway drives in winter; our chauffeurs slow down and will stop if visibility is unsafe.
- Documents. Carry your passport or OCI card during intercity trips; hotels and some temples ask for identification.
- Consular help. For passport, OCI and consular services, the Ministry of External Affairs is the official reference.
- Cash and SIM. Airport ATMs and SIM counters sit just outside the arrivals exit at the larger terminals; tell the chauffeur if you want to stop there before heading to the car park.
- Return flight. Book the drop to the airport at the same time as the arrival. For international departures, plan to reach the terminal about three hours before the flight, and add extra time in fog season or on a Friday evening out of Delhi or Mumbai.
