Shimla taxi rates in 2026

Shimla's local fares match our Delhi baseline. Every price is before 5% GST. Tolls on the Parwanoo highway, Himachal entry tax for vehicles registered outside the state, parking at Kufri and the lift car park, and any restricted-road permit are added at actual cost. Shimla taxi rate per km for hill and plains drives

Fares updated September 2026. Distance outside Shimla's local packages is charged per kilometre by car class. Three sample journeys make the rates concrete: the descent to Chandigarh (about 115 km), the long run to Delhi (about 345 km) and a one-way drive up the Sutlej valley to Kalpa in Kinnaur (about 230 km).

For Kinnaur we strongly recommend the Innova or Fortuner rows; the road beyond Rampur is narrow, and a sedan's low floor is a real limitation after rain. Luxury sedans and SUVs are available for Chandigarh and Delhi transfers and for weddings on request. Add tolls, Himachal entry tax for outside-registered vehicles, permits, parking and 5% GST; overnight trips carry a driver allowance of Rs 1,500 per night.

Shimla hourly packages: 4, 8 and 12 hours

Sightseeing inside the Shimla area is sold by the hour and kilometre. The 12 hr/120 km package is priced as the 8-hour fare times 1.5, plus 40 km at the class rate. It is the sensible choice for a Kufri, Chail and Naldehra circuit, or for a snow day when queues at Dhalli can eat two hours.

Arriving in Shimla: airport, rail and road

Shimla airport at Jubbarhatti is about 22 km from the Ridge, a 45-minute drive down a winding road. Flights are few and weather-dependent, so many visitors land at Chandigarh (IXC) instead and drive up, which is roughly 115-120 km and about three and a half to four hours. For flights into either, we track the arrival, the driver waits with a name board, and waiting is free for 30 minutes after a domestic landing and 60 minutes after an international one. Mall Road, the Ridge and restricted roads

The Mall, the Ridge and the lanes around Lakkar Bazaar are closed to general traffic. Beyond that core, several roads in the town are classed as sealed or restricted and need a permit from the district administration for vehicles to use them. In practice your driver will:

• drop you at the Lift on Cart Road, which carries walkers up to the Mall, or at Chhota Shimla or the Victory Tunnel side depending on your hotel;
• wait in a paid car park while you walk the Mall, Christ Church, Scandal Point and the Gaiety Theatre;
• collect luggage for hotels on the Mall using the hotel's permitted access or a porter, never by driving on a sealed road without a permit.

Sightseeing around Shimla by car

An 8 hr/80 km day covers most of the classic circuit:

1. Kufri, about 16 km east, with yak and pony rides, the Himalayan nature park and, in winter, snow play. The final stretch to Mahasu Peak is on horseback or foot.
2. Fagu and Chini Bungalow for apple orchards and valley views.
3. Mashobra and Craignano, quieter pine forests about 12 km north.
4. Naldehra, around 22 km, with a nine-hole golf course among deodars.
5. Jakhu Temple, reached by a steep road or the ropeway, with its giant Hanuman statue.
6. Viceregal Lodge at Observatory Hill, home of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.

Further afield, Chail (about 45 km) has the palace and one of the world's highest cricket grounds; Narkanda (about 60 km) is a winter ski slope and summer apple country, with Hatu Peak above it; Tattapani (about 50 km) has hot springs on the Sutlej. One-way drops are priced at the per-km rate. To keep the car for a return, the charge is the real distance driven or 250 km for each date of the trip, whichever is larger, plus the driver's night allowance. Tolls, entry tax, permits, parking and 5% GST are extra.

Shimla itineraries that work by car

Day one, the town on foot and by car (8 hr). Jakhu temple by car early, the Mall and Ridge on foot, Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre, lunch at Lakkar Bazaar end, then the Viceregal Lodge at Observatory Hill and sunset at Tara Devi or Summer Hill.

Day two, Kufri to Narkanda (outstation day). Kufri and the nature park, apple orchards at Theog, lunch at Narkanda and a walk up to Hatu Peak's temple in the deodars. Back before dark. Billed at the 250 km day minimum.

Day three, Chail and Kandaghat (12 hr). The palace grounds, the cricket ground, the Kali ka Tibba temple, and a return through Kandaghat and Shoghi. In winter this is often the calmer alternative to snow-crowded Kufri.

Hill driving and snow: how we run Shimla trips

Every Shimla car is driven by a chauffeur experienced on Himachal ghats. On these roads that means low gears on descents, the horn on blind corners, giving way to uphill traffic and to HRTC buses, and no overtaking on curves. Average speeds in the hills are around 25-30 km an hour, so a 60 km trip can take two hours.

Snow season (December to February). Kufri, Narkanda and Fagu usually get snow in these months, and occasionally the Ridge itself. After a heavy fall, police may stop traffic at Dhalli or close the road beyond Kufri until it is cleared. We watch forecasts, carry chains on the car when snow is due, and for a snow trip we recommend an Innova Crysta or Fortuner for their extra ground clearance. Black ice in shaded bends is most dangerous early in the morning, so snow excursions start mid-morning and return before dark.

Monsoon (July to September). Landslides can close the Kalka-Shimla highway or roads to Narkanda and Kinnaur for hours. Drivers follow the district's advisories and we build buffer time into flight connections.

Peak weekends. Summer holidays from mid-May to June, Christmas and New Year bring long queues at Shoghi and Dhalli and scarce parking. Early starts make the biggest difference.

Beyond Shimla: Kinnaur, Spiti and Manali

Shimla is the starting point for the Hindustan-Tibet road into Kinnaur, with Sarahan, Sangla and Kalpa on the way to Spiti. Airport and railway station transfers in Shimla

A transfer is a flat fare up to 40 km. For longer transfers, the fare below already includes the kilometres beyond 40 at the per-km rate. Pickups from Chandigarh's airport or railway station are longer, over 100 km, so they are booked as one-way drops using the routes table.

Travelling in Shimla with children and older relatives

Shimla is a walking town, and that surprises many families. The Mall and the Ridge are car-free, so the practical questions are how far the car can get you and how much climbing is left.

• The Lift from Cart Road carries passengers up to the Mall level in two stages and saves the steepest walk; there can be a queue in the evening, so time the drop accordingly.
• Jakhu is reached either by the ropeway or by a steep road; the driver can take older passengers most of the way up by car, subject to traffic on the day.
• Kufri's Mahasu Peak is reached on ponies or on foot from the road; for those who cannot ride or walk, the nature park at road level is the gentler alternative.
• Motion sickness is common on the Parwanoo-Shimla and Kufri roads. Ask the driver for a smooth pace, keep a window slightly open, avoid a heavy breakfast before the climb and seat the sensitive traveller in front.

Preparing for a winter trip

Between December and February, a few preparations make the difference between a good snow day and a frustrating one. Bring waterproof shoes and gloves as well as warm layers; snow at Kufri and Narkanda is wet by midday. Keep a flexible plan: if the police stop cars at Dhalli after a heavy fall, the driver will suggest Chail, Naldehra or the Mashobra woods instead, which often have snow without the traffic. Start mid-morning rather than at dawn, when shaded bends can carry black ice, and plan to be back in town before dark.
