Manali is where road trips in the western Himalaya begin. Snow at Solang, the drive through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, a permit day at Rohtang, a riverside lunch in Kasol: each needs a car and, more importantly, a driver who reads mountain weather and knows the local rules. Our taxi service in Manali gives you both at published prices. A sedan day of 8 hours and 80 km costs Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve, an Innova Crysta Rs 13,230 Pay Now to Reserve and a Fortuner Rs 23,640 Pay Now to Reserve, while long drops to Chandigarh or Delhi are charged per kilometre. Book on RutzIndia.com, see the fare up front and pay by card or UPI.

Local fares in Manali are about 5% above our Delhi baseline because of the season and terrain; outstation kilometres use the normal per-km rate. Add 5% GST. Tolls, Himachal entry tax for outside-registered vehicles, the Rohtang permit, green fees, parking at Solang and Hadimba, and snow-chain fitting are charged at actual cost. On multi-day trips the driver's night allowance is Rs 1,500 per night, and round trips bill a minimum of 250 km per calendar day. See the complete fares table.
Typical Manali fares worked out
- Solang Valley half day: about 28 km return, inside the 4 hr/40 km package, Rs 4,530 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 7,950 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova.
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: roughly 80-90 km return from Mall Road, an 8 hr day at Rs 13,230 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova plus a few extra kilometres.
- Kasol and Manikaran: around 160 km return, billed at the 250 km day minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.

- Four-day Spiti circuit in a Fortuner: 4 x 250 = 1,000 km minimum x Rs 84 = Rs 84,000 Pay Now to Reserve, plus three night allowances.

Manali cab fares per kilometre by class
Fares updated September 2026. Past the local packages, every kilometre is billed at the class rate. The comparison columns cover the three long drives people most often ask about: down to Chandigarh (about 310 km), over Kunzum to Kaza in Spiti (about 200 km) and up the Leh highway (about 430 km).
| Car | Per km | Chandigarh one way, 310 km | Kaza one way, 200 km | Leh one way, 430 km |

Sedans and low-floor vans are fine to Chandigarh or Delhi but are not sent over Kunzum or Baralacha La, where broken surfaces and water crossings need clearance. High-pass trips are multi-day, so the 250 km-per-day minimum and nightly driver allowances apply, along with permits, tolls and 5% GST.
Local packages in Manali: 4, 8 and 12 hours
Solang, Hadimba, Vashisht, Naggar and the Atal Tunnel run all fit hourly packages. The 12 hr/120 km day costs the 8-hour fare times 1.5 plus 40 km at the class rate. It is worth it on winter weekends, when the queue between Palchan and Solang can take hours, and for a Sissu day that returns after dark.

Rohtang Pass: permits, taxi rules and closures
Rohtang is about 51 km from Manali and stands close to 4,000 metres. Because of heavy tourist pressure, vehicles going to Rohtang need a permit issued online, with a daily cap on numbers, and the pass is closed to tourist vehicles on Tuesdays for maintenance. Permits are released on the official Rohtang permit portal and sell out quickly in May and June.
There is also a local practice every visitor should know: Rohtang sightseeing is generally done in Manali-registered taxis, and vehicles from outside Himachal have faced restrictions on this road. When you ask us for a Rohtang day, the desk arranges a local permit-holding taxi for that leg rather than sending a car from the plains up the pass. Snow Point beyond Marhi, Gulaba and the Beas Kund viewpoint also fall under these arrangements at times. Rules change season to season, so we confirm what applies when you book.
Rohtang is usually open from around May to November, weather permitting, and closes in winter. Expect cold even in June; bring jackets and sunglasses.
The Atal Tunnel and Lahaul
The Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang ridge, about 9 km long, has transformed winter travel: it links the Solang side to Sissu and Keylong in roughly 10 minutes of driving, avoiding the pass entirely. You do not need a Rohtang permit for the tunnel. Visitors heading into Lahaul-Spiti are, however, asked to register their vehicle on the district's e-Aagman portal; we complete this for our cars and tell you what passenger details are needed.
A typical tunnel day runs Manali to Solang, through the tunnel to Sissu waterfall and lake, lunch at a dhaba, and back via Koksar. In heavy snow the police close the tunnel approaches for clearing, sometimes for a day or more; our drivers check the status each morning. The drive continues north to Keylong, Jispa and on to Leh or Kaza in summer.

Local sightseeing in Manali and the Kullu valley
Within an 8 hr/80 km day you can comfortably cover:
- Hadimba Devi temple in the cedar forest above town, and the Ghatotkach shrine beside it.
- Old Manali cafés and the Manu temple, up a narrow lane where the driver will drop you and wait lower down.
- Vashisht hot springs and temple across the Beas.
- Solang Valley for paragliding in summer, skiing and snow play in winter, and the Solang ropeway.
- Naggar Castle and the Roerich art gallery, about 20 km down the left bank.
- Jogini Falls trailhead near Vashisht, a short walk from the road end.
Further down the valley, Kullu (about 40 km) hosts the famous Dussehra fair in October, which starts on Vijayadashami and runs for a week; roads through Dhalpur maidan are crowded then. Kasol and Manikaran are about 80 km each way in the Parvati valley, with a gurdwara and hot springs at the end.
Hill driving, snow and the seasons
Manali roads are mountain roads first and tourist roads second. Our drivers keep speeds low, use engine braking on descents, give way to uphill vehicles and army convoys, and avoid driving after dark whenever possible. Traffic jams between Palchan and Solang on winter weekends can last hours, so we start before 9 am.
Winter (December to February) brings snow to Solang, Gulaba and often Manali town. After fresh snow, police frequently stop ordinary vehicles at Solang or Palchan and allow only four-wheel-drive or chained vehicles further. That is why we recommend an Innova Crysta or a Fortuner on rent for winter trips and carry chains when snow is expected; fitting charges are added at actual cost. Some parts of the Lahaul road close entirely after big storms.
Spring and summer (March to June) are peak holiday months, with snow still on the higher slopes and the Rohtang permit season in full swing. Monsoon (July to September) brings landslides in the Kullu valley and on the Mandi highway; build a buffer day before any flight. Autumn (October to November) is clear and quieter, excellent for Spiti.
The Kullu district administration posts road closures and advisories during snow and monsoon.
Spiti, Leh and other long drives from Manali
Summer opens the high roads. Kunzum Pass, the gateway to Spiti, is usually passable from around June to October, and the Manali-Leh highway over Baralacha La and Tanglang La typically opens a little later and closes with the first heavy snow. These are serious drives: long stretches of broken road, water crossings in the afternoon when glacier melt peaks, and altitudes where passengers need a slow ascent to acclimatise. We plan them with:
- an Innova Crysta on rent or Fortuner, never a low sedan;
- spare days built in for weather and for rest at Kaza or Jispa;
- early starts so water crossings are made in the morning;
- inner-line and area registrations checked for foreign nationals where border zones apply.
These trips are billed like any outstation cab: at least 250 km per calendar day, plus night allowances and permits at actual cost. Groups flying into Chandigarh often start together in a Tempo Traveller from Chandigarh and switch to SUVs in Manali for the high passes.
Popular outstation routes from Manali with one-way fares
A one-way drop is the distance times the class rate. If the car stays with you, the charge is the real kilometres or 250 km per date on the booking, whichever is higher, plus night allowances. Permits, entry tax, tolls, parking and 5% GST are extra.

Getting to Manali: airport and road connections
Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali airport) is about 50 km south and receives a small number of flights, which are often weather-dependent. A pickup from Bhuntar to Manali's Mall Road costs Rs 4,530 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan: the Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve transfer fare plus 10 km at the class rate. We track the flight, meet you with a name board and allow 30 minutes of free waiting (60 after an international arrival on a through ticket); after that the hourly rate applies.
From Chandigarh, it is roughly 310 km, about eight hours via the Kiratpur-Manali highway with its new tunnels past Bilaspur and Mandi. The Chandigarh to Manali taxi page has one-way and two-day fares; IXC flyers can also use our Chandigarh taxi service.
From Delhi, the 540 km drive takes 12 hours or more, so most people either break it at Chandigarh or leave very early. See Delhi to Manali taxi.
From Shimla, about 250 km via Mandi; our Shimla taxi service handles the first half of a two-hill-station holiday.
Airport and railway transfers around Manali
Transfers up to 40 km are a fixed fare. Longer transfers add the kilometres beyond 40 at the class rate, and the totals are worked out below. Most visitors reach Manali by overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh. Buses usually drop at the private bus stand outside the town centre early in the morning; a pre-booked car can meet you there with a name board and take you and your bags up to Old Manali or a hotel on the Hadimba road, where the lanes are steep.

Which cab is cheaper in Manali?
Manali's taxi market is dominated by local operators and union stands, with set rates for standard sightseeing points that change by season. A pre-booked package fixes your price before you arrive: Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve for eight hours in a sedan or Rs 13,230 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, whatever the snow or the holiday crowds do. For Rohtang specifically, a local permit-holding taxi is used for that leg, and the desk arranges it with the fare shown in advance. Our approach to fixed pricing is explained on cab booking.
Is Ola or Uber available in Manali?
App-based ride-hailing is not something to count on in Manali; cars are scarce or unavailable, particularly for Solang, the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang, and local rules favour Manali-registered taxis for some routes. Plan with a pre-booked car or a local taxi. For big groups, a Tempo Traveller carries everyone and the luggage together; seat layouts are on Tempo Traveller on rent. The state tourism department lists festivals, treks and road advisories on Himachal Tourism.
Groups, honeymoons and adventure trips
Manali is India's honeymoon capital in winter and a family and college-group favourite in summer. Couples often book a sedan or Innova Crysta for four or five days; groups of 10-17 take a Tempo Traveller at Rs 20,460 per local day, though very narrow lanes in Old Manali may mean a short walk. Trekking groups heading to Hampta Pass or Beas Kund use one-way drops to the trailhead and a pickup a few days later. For longer Himachal loops that combine Dharamshala, Dalhousie or Spiti, see Himachal taxi service.
Altitude, cold and comfort on the high roads
Manali town sits around 2,000 metres, Rohtang close to 4,000 and the passes on the Leh highway higher still. Altitude affects people differently, and a car makes it easy to climb too fast. A few sensible habits:
- Go up gradually. Spend a night or two in Manali before a Rohtang or Lahaul day, and on the Leh or Spiti routes build in a night at Jispa, Keylong or Kaza rather than driving straight through.
- Watch for symptoms. Headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest or unusual tiredness are signals to stop climbing. Tell the driver; turning back down the valley is always an option, and there is no penalty for shortening a sightseeing day.
- Keep warm and hydrated. Even in June, the wind at Rohtang and Baralacha La is bitter. Carry a jacket, gloves, a cap and water in the car, and use sunglasses and sunscreen against snow glare.
- Plan food stops. Dhabas at Marhi, Sissu, Jispa and Darcha are the main options; beyond them, stretches can be long.
- Carry cash. Mobile coverage and card payments are patchy above the tunnel, so keep some cash for tea stalls, parking and entry points.
Those with heart or lung conditions, pregnant travellers and very young children should take medical advice before planning a high-pass trip; the lower valley, Solang, Naggar and Kasol offer plenty without the altitude.
Planning a Manali honeymoon or family holiday by car
A typical five-night plan runs Chandigarh to Manali on day one, Old Manali, Hadimba and Vashisht on day two, Solang and the Atal Tunnel on day three, Naggar and the Kullu valley on day four, Kasol or Manikaran on day five, and the drive down on day six. Keeping one car and one driver throughout means your luggage stays locked in the boot, the driver learns your pace, and you avoid negotiating a new taxi for each outing. For couples we usually suggest an Innova Crysta for comfort on the long drive in and out; families of six to eight can compare a Tempo Traveller for the same plan.
Travellers flying into Chandigarh can have the same car collect them at the airport, so the whole holiday runs as one booking with one invoice; the Chandigarh-Manali leg is billed at the per-km rate and the days in Manali at the outstation daily minimum.
