The drive from Chandigarh to Manali is where the plains end and the Himalaya begins. In one long day you leave the sector grid, cross the Sutlej at Kiratpur, follow the Beas through the gorge beyond Mandi and arrive among the deodars of the Kullu valley. A Chandigarh to Manali taxi from RutzIndia.com gives you a chauffeur trained for mountain roads, a car no older than four model years, and a fare fixed before you set off.
Chandigarh to Manali taxi fare
A Chandigarh to Manali one way taxi costs Rs 11,160 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan (310 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 17,670 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. A two-day return is billed on 620 km: Rs 22,320 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan or Rs 35,340 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova. Fares are before 5% GST; tolls, Himachal entry tax and parking are at actual.
Because nobody sensibly drives 620 km of hill road in one day, the round trip on this route is priced as a minimum of two days. Longer holidays are billed at 250 km per calendar day, which usually works out cheaper than it sounds because local sightseeing in Manali is included in that allowance.
| Car | One way (310 km) | 2-day return (620 km) | 4-day Manali holiday (1,000 km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swift Dzire / Honda Amaze | Rs 11,160 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,320 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Maruti Ertiga / Kia Carens | Rs 13,020 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 26,040 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | Rs 17,670 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 35,340 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Toyota Fortuner | Rs 26,040 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 52,080 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 84,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | Rs 24,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 48,360 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
On multi-day trips add the driver's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night. The four-day column assumes the car stays with you in Manali for Solang, Old Manali, Naggar and a run through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, all within the 1,000 km billed.

The route up the Sutlej and the Beas
Your chauffeur leaves the Tricity through Kharar or Mohali and heads north-west to Ropar and then to Kiratpur Sahib on the Sutlej. From Kiratpur the road becomes the Kiratpur-Manali highway, now four-laned for long stretches with a series of new tunnels and bridges that have taken the edge off the old climb.
- Kiratpur to Bilaspur: the first hills, and the first view of the Gobind Sagar reservoir behind the Bhakra dam. The new alignment tunnels through several ridges.
- Bilaspur to Sundernagar: a pleasant rolling stretch through the town of Sundernagar and its lake.
- Mandi: the old market town on the Beas, famous for its many temples, including Bhutnath, and for the Shivratri fair. A natural lunch stop about halfway in time.
- Pandoh: the dam on the Beas, followed by the dramatic gorge section where the road runs between rock walls and the river.
- Aut tunnel: a tunnel of about three kilometres that bypasses a slow cliff road and brings you out near the Larji confluence.
- Bhuntar and Kullu: Bhuntar has the valley's airport and the turn for Kasol and Manikaran. Kullu is the district town, known for its shawls and the Dussehra celebrations in October.
- Kullu to Manali: the final 40 km along the Beas, past orchards and river camps, either on the main highway on the right bank or the quieter left-bank road via Naggar.
Himachal Pradesh's official tourism portal, Himachal Tourism, is a good source on the valley's festivals and on the state-run hotels along this route.
Tolls, entry tax and permits
Tolls are collected on the four-lane stretches, and Himachal Pradesh charges an entry tax on commercial vehicles registered outside the state at its border barriers. Both are paid on the way and passed on at actual cost, itemised on the invoice; we do not add anything on top. Our cars travel on All-India tourist permits.
Beyond Manali there are two permit questions worth knowing about:
- Rohtang Pass: vehicle numbers are capped and a permit must be obtained online in advance for the day of travel. The pass is typically open only in the warmer months and is closed after heavy snow.
- Atal Tunnel to Sissu and Lahaul: the Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang ridge, a little over nine kilometres long, allows year-round access to Lahaul when the road is clear. Regulations and fees for this approach can change with the season and administration orders, so our desk checks the current rule when you book.
Permit and green-tax charges, where they apply, are charged at actual. Vehicle documents are verified on the national Parivahan system, and our cars carry valid registration, fitness and permit papers.

Hill-driving rules our chauffeurs follow
Mountain roads reward patience. On this route our chauffeurs:
- Drive in daylight. We plan departures so the car reaches Manali before dark and avoid night driving in the hills.
- Give way to uphill traffic on narrow sections, as hill etiquette requires, and use the horn on blind bends.
- Use engine braking on long descents rather than riding the brakes.
- Rest properly. After an eight-hour mountain drive, the chauffeur rests before the next day's sightseeing.
- Watch the weather. In monsoon or snow, they will call the desk before continuing if a stretch is closed, and wait rather than take risks.
Passengers prone to motion sickness should sit in front, eat lightly and ask for short stops; the chauffeur will take corners smoothly.
When to go and when to leave
Best departure: 6 to 7 am from Chandigarh. You reach Mandi for lunch and Manali by about 3 to 4 pm, with daylight to spare.
Seasons:
- March to June: peak season. Apple blossom in spring, then the Delhi and Punjab summer rush. Weekends and school holidays in May and June are very busy, and traffic can queue in Manali town.
- July to September (monsoon): landslides and river flooding can close parts of the Kiratpur-Manali highway, sometimes for days. Travel is possible but needs flexibility; we will not push a car through an unsafe stretch.
- October and November: clear skies and crisp air; Kullu Dussehra in October brings colour to the valley.
- December to February: snow in and around Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel approach. Chains and a higher-clearance car help; we recommend an Innova or a Fortuner, and roads beyond Manali may close after fresh snowfall. Christmas and New Year are busy.

Stops along the way
- Ropar and Kiratpur Sahib: gurdwaras and the Sutlej, a short halt for tea.
- Gobind Sagar viewpoints near Bilaspur: wide views of the reservoir.
- Sundernagar: a lake-side stretch and roadside dhabas.
- Mandi: temples, a proper lunch and the old market.
- Pandoh dam viewpoint: a quick photo stop before the gorge.
- Kullu shawl outlets: handloom co-operatives and factory shops near Bhuntar and Kullu.
Pickup in the Tricity, drop in Manali
We pick up from any address in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, as well as from Chandigarh International Airport and the railway station. Morning pickups from Mohali and Kharar save time because they are already on the Ropar road. For airport pickups, the chauffeur tracks your flight and waits with a name board; you have 60 minutes free after an international arrival and 30 minutes after a domestic one, and waiting beyond that is billed at the hourly rate.
In Manali we drop to Mall Road and the Model Town hotels, Old Manali's cafes and guest houses, the Hadimba temple area, Vashisht with its hot springs, Aleo and the Left Bank resorts, Solang Valley and Naggar. Some of Old Manali's lanes are too narrow for larger cars, so the chauffeur will drop at the nearest safe point.
What to carry for the journey
Even in May, Manali evenings are cool, and the valley can swing from warm sunshine to cold rain within an hour. Keep a light jacket in the cabin rather than the boot. Carry motion-sickness tablets if anyone in the family needs them, a refillable water bottle, and some cash for small dhabas and parking where digital payment may not work. In winter, pack gloves, woollen socks and sunglasses for snow glare. Mobile coverage is generally good along the highway but patchy in the gorge beyond Pandoh and in side valleys, so download offline maps and hotel details before you leave. Keep photo ID handy for hotel check-in and any checkpoint. If you plan to go beyond Manali towards Lahaul, tell us at booking so the right car and paperwork are ready; longer circuits are explained on the outstation cabs page and the full list of intercity fares is on the routes hub.
Which car for the mountains
A compact sedan is fine for two people in summer on a paved road, but it is low to the ground and has little spare power on steep climbs. An Ertiga carries a family of five on a budget. The Innova Crysta is the standard for the hills: good ground clearance, strong brakes and space for jackets and bags. A Fortuner suits winter snow trips and anyone who wants to go on to Sissu or Kaza. Groups of ten or more should book a Tempo Traveller in Chandigarh or a Force Urbania.
More Himachal routes
Manali is one of several hill drives from the Tricity. The Chandigarh to Shimla taxi takes about three and a half hours for Kasauli, Kufri and Narkanda. If you are coming from the capital, the Delhi to Manali taxi runs through to the valley in one booking. Once in the mountains, the Manali taxi service offers local sightseeing cars, and the Himachal taxi service page covers multi-day circuits to Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Spiti. For Chandigarh city itself, see our Chandigarh taxi service.
How much is a Chandigarh to Manali taxi in 2026?
Hill trips are priced exactly like plains trips, by the kilometre, so the numbers below are simply the distance multiplied by each car's rate. The five-day column shows a typical holiday with the car staying in the valley, billed at 250 km a day. Rates were refreshed in September 2026 and are not raised for the May-June rush or the Christmas snow season.

Every fare is before 5% GST. Night allowances of Rs 1,500 apply for each night the chauffeur stays with you.
Worked example: a snow honeymoon in January
A couple flying into Chandigarh want four days, two of them in Manali, with a run to Solang for the snow. A Fortuner on rent is the sensible car for icy roads. Four days are billed on 1,000 km: Rs 84,000 Pay Now to Reserve. Add 5% GST of Rs 4,200, three night allowances, and the tolls, Himachal entry tax and parking at actual. If they choose an Innova Crysta instead, the same plan is Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve before GST.
Distance, time and road charges, section by section
These figures follow the Kiratpur-Manali highway from Sector 17 on a clear summer day. Distances are approximate; charges are listed by type because plaza positions change as new four-lane sections and tunnels open. Everything is paid on the way and itemised at actual.
| Section | Approx. km | Usual time | Road charges on this section |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sector 17 to Kharar | 20 km | 30 min | none |
| Kharar to Ropar | 25 km | 30 min | Punjab highway toll |
| Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib | 30 km | 35 min | none |
| Kiratpur to Bilaspur (tunnels and new alignment) | 55 km | 60 min | Himachal entry tax at the border; four-lane toll |
| Bilaspur to Sundernagar | 45 km | 60 min | none |
| Sundernagar to Mandi | 25 km | 35 min | none |
| Mandi to Pandoh | 20 km | 30 min | none |
| Pandoh to Aut (gorge and tunnel) | 20 km | 30 min | four-lane toll on this corridor |
| Aut to Bhuntar | 20 km | 30 min | none |
| Bhuntar to Kullu | 10 km | 20 min | none |
| Kullu to Manali | 40 km | 60-75 min | green or entry fees for some areas beyond Manali, if applicable |
| Total | about 310 km | about 8 hrs with a lunch halt |
Monsoon damage can close individual sections for hours or days, in which case the chauffeur may use the older roads, for example via Kullu's left bank. Your one-way fare stays the same.
HRTC Volvo, a flight to Bhuntar, self-drive or a chauffeur-driven cab?
There is no railway to Manali, so the choice is between road and air.
| Mode | Starts at your door? | Time taken | Suits | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HRTC or private Volvo from ISBT Sector 43 | No | Overnight, around 9 to 10 hrs | Budget travellers | Arrives at Manali's bus stand at dawn |
| Flight to Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali Airport) | No | Short flight plus about 50 km by road | Travellers flying in from Delhi | Few flights, weather-sensitive |
| Self-drive hire | From the rental hub | About 8 hrs at the wheel | Experienced hill drivers | Hairpins, trucks, snow and your own fatigue |
| Private cab with a chauffeur | Yes | About 8 hrs, in daylight | Families, honeymooners, groups | Needs an early start |
HRTC, Himachal's state transport corporation, runs Volvo coaches from Chandigarh, and they are good value for one or two people who can sleep on a bus. The Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar is small, served by a limited number of flights and prone to weather cancellations; if you land there, our Manali taxi service can collect you. Driving yourself is possible, but after eight hours of hill road the last thing most people want is to drive the next morning too, and a chauffeur who knows where the road floods in August or freezes in January is worth a great deal.

Where to go:
- Hadimba temple and the Van Vihar forest: the wooden pagoda-style shrine in deodar woods above Mall Road.
- Old Manali and Vashisht: cafes, the Manu temple, and hot sulphur springs at the Vashisht temple.
- Solang Valley: paragliding and zorbing in summer, snow play and skiing slopes in winter, roughly 14 km from town.
- Naggar: the old stone-and-timber castle and the Roerich art gallery, on the quieter left bank.
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: the drive under the Rohtang ridge to the Chandra valley in Lahaul, when the road is open.
- Rohtang Pass: by online permit only, in the months it is open.
- Kasol and Manikaran: a day up the Parvati valley from Bhuntar.
One local point to know: Manali's own rules and taxi-operator arrangements can restrict which vehicles may run certain sightseeing routes, particularly towards Solang and Rohtang. Where that applies, our desk books a locally registered car for those legs at the Manali local rate, and tells you before you travel. For broader Himachal circuits, see the Himachal taxi service.
Onward fares and a Shimla-Manali circuit

A five-day Manali plan from the Tricity
This is the itinerary our desk suggests most often to families with a week off. It fits the 1,250 km billed for five days with room to spare.
| Day | Plan | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chandigarh to Manali via Bilaspur, lunch in Mandi, arrive before dark | 310 km |
| 2 | Hadimba temple, Old Manali, Vashisht hot springs, Mall Road in the evening | 25 km |
| 3 | Solang Valley in the morning; Atal Tunnel to Sissu if the road is open | 90 km |
| 4 | Naggar castle and the Roerich gallery, then Kullu's shawl co-operatives | 60 km |
| 5 | Manali to Chandigarh, leaving by 7 am | 310 km |
| Total | about 795 km |
With Innova Crysta billing at 1,250 km, that is Rs 71,250 Pay Now to Reserve before GST, plus four night allowances. A day in the Parvati valley for Kasol and Manikaran can replace day 4 without exceeding the billed distance. If you are short of time, drop day 4; four days are billed on 1,000 km, which is Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova Crysta or Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve by saloon before GST. Adding a sixth day for Kasol or a slower return costs one more daily minimum and one more night allowance.
Driving in snow: what changes in winter
Between December and February, and sometimes into March, the valley above Kullu can see heavy snowfall. On those trips:
- We send higher-clearance cars. Fortuners and Innovas are allocated first for winter Manali bookings.
- Snow chains are arranged where the vehicle supports them and fitted when police or road conditions require; chains hired locally are charged at actual.
- Starts are later on icy mornings. Black ice lingers in shaded bends until the sun is up, so hill legs start after it has had time to clear.
- Plans stay flexible. The Atal Tunnel approach and Solang road can close after fresh snowfall; the chauffeur checks the police advisory each morning and suggests alternatives such as Naggar or Kullu.
- The last stretch is walked if needed. Some hotel lanes in Old Manali and on the Hadimba road become impassable for cars after snow, so the chauffeur may drop you at the main road.
Honeymoon couples often combine a winter trip with a premium car; the luxury car rental in Chandigarh page lists SUVs available from the Tricity.
