Chandigarh to Shimla taxi: fares in brief
RutzIndia.com charges Rs 4,140 Pay Now to Reserve for a one-way Chandigarh to Shimla taxi in a compact sedan and Rs 6,570 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, based on about 115 km. A day return is billed on the 250 km daily minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. GST of 5% is extra, as are tolls, Himachal entry tax and parking, all at actual.
Chandigarh is where most journeys to Shimla really begin. Trains terminate at Kalka and the airport is in Mohali, and the Tricity's own residents escape to the hills every summer weekend. The distance is short, but the character of the drive is not: you leave the flat, tree-lined sectors, cross the Shivalik foothills at Parwanoo, and climb steadily through pine and oak to about 2,200 metres. That last hundred kilometres rewards a chauffeur who knows every hairpin, and that is exactly who we send.
Book a Chandigarh to Shimla one way taxi if you are staying on and flying out elsewhere, or a round trip if you want the car to wait, show you Kufri and bring you back. Either way, the fare is built from kilometres and vehicle class and shown before you pay.

Price table by trip type
The short distance means round trips are governed by the daily minimum of 250 km. Here is what that looks like across our most-booked cars.
| Trip | Dzire sedan | Innova Crysta | Fortuner | Tempo Traveller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One way, about 115 km (Innova, Fortuner, Tempo: minimum fare applies) | Rs 4,140 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,570 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,730 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,200 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Same-day return, 250 km minimum | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Weekend, 2 days, 500 km minimum | Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda, 3 days, 750 km minimum | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
Other classes follow the same logic: an Ertiga is Rs 4,830 Pay Now to Reserve one way and Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve for a day return; a Honda City or Verna is Rs 5,640 Pay Now to Reserve one way and a Force Urbania for a group of up to 17 is Rs 14,100 Pay Now to Reserve one way, both at the minimum fare that applies to a trip starting in Chandigarh.
What gets added on the bill, each at the exact amount paid: 5% GST, the toll plaza on the Panchkula–Parwanoo stretch, the entry tax Himachal Pradesh levies on commercial vehicles registered in other states, and parking at Shimla's designated lots. On overnight bookings the chauffeur's night allowance is Rs 1,500 per night depending on the vehicle.
A typical calculation: a family of six in an Innova, Friday evening to Sunday evening, driving Chandigarh to Shimla, a Saturday loop to Kufri and Mashobra, and back, covers perhaps 330 km. The two-day minimum of 500 km sets the base at Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve, then two night allowances, tolls, entry tax and GST.

The climb: Zirakpur, Parwanoo, Solan and on to Shimla
Leaving Chandigarh, the chauffeur heads through Zirakpur or Panchkula to Pinjore and Kalka on the four-lane highway. The Himachal border is at Parwanoo, where the entry tax barrier sits and the gradient begins. From here NH-5 winds through Jabli, Dharampur, Kumarhatti and Barog before reaching Solan, roughly halfway in time. Long sections have been widened into a four-lane road with new bridges and cuttings, while work continues on some stretches closer to Shimla; expect occasional single-lane diversions.
After Solan the road passes Kandaghat, where a turn leads up to Chail, then Waknaghat, Kaithlighat and Shoghi, with Tara Devi temple on its ridge above. You enter Shimla on the Cart Road side. Without long stops, the drive takes about three to three and a half hours; on a summer Saturday the Parwanoo to Dharampur climb can add an hour.
Hill driving, the way we do it. Chauffeurs on this route follow mountain etiquette: uphill traffic gets way on narrow bends, overtaking only where the road is clear, low gears on descents to save the brakes, and no racing buses to the next corner. If anyone in your group gets motion sickness, ask for the front seat, eat lightly before the climb, and take the break at Dharampur. The driver will not mind stopping.

Stage-by-stage distance, time and tolls
| Stage | About km | Typical time | Tolls and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh sectors to Zirakpur or Panchkula, then Pinjore and Kalka | about 30 | 40-50 min | toll plaza on the Zirakpur–Parwanoo highway |
| Kalka to Parwanoo | about 5 | 10 min | Himachal border barrier; entry tax for outside taxis |
| Parwanoo to Dharampur | about 20 | 30-40 min | four-lane climb; slow heavy vehicles |
| Dharampur to Solan | about 20 | 25-35 min | Kasauli turn-off; widened road with new bridges |
| Solan, Kandaghat, Waknaghat, Shoghi to Shimla | about 40 | 60-75 min | ongoing works on some stretches; Chail turn-off at Kandaghat |
| Whole route | about 115 | 3 to 3.5 hrs | tolls and entry tax billed at actual |
Toy train, HRTC bus, self-drive or chauffeur
| Option | Journey | Door-to-door time from Chandigarh | Worth it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway | about 96 km of heritage line with over a hundred tunnels; you first reach Kalka | 6 to 7 hrs including getting to Kalka | the experience itself, not speed |
| HRTC and private buses | ordinary and Volvo coaches from ISBT Sector 43 to Shimla ISBT at Tutikandi | 4 to 5 hrs plus a local taxi at Shimla | solo budget travel |
| Self-drive | NH-5 is well built but steep and busy; Shimla parking is scarce and many roads are restricted | 3 to 3.5 hrs plus parking | drivers used to hills |
| RutzIndia.com chauffeur cab | door or airport pickup, hill-trained driver, drop at your hotel or nearest permitted point | 3 to 3.5 hrs | families, elders, winter trips, anyone short of time |
The toy train is one of India's great rail journeys, part of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage listing, and deserves a place on your trip if you have the time. Timetables are on the Indian Railways enquiry site. For most families, the pragmatic answer is the combination described later on this page: train up for the views, car for the bags and the return.

Stops between Chandigarh and Shimla
- Pinjore Gardens: the terraced Mughal-style Yadavindra Gardens, a 20-minute stop just off the highway.
- Timber Trail, Parwanoo: a cable car ride up to a hilltop resort, good with children.
- Dharampur: the classic breakfast halt, with roadside dhabas famous among Tricity families.
- Kasauli: a quiet cantonment town about 12 km off the highway from Dharampur, worth a detour for Monkey Point and the Mall.
- Barog: known for the long railway tunnel on the heritage toy-train line.
- Chail: up from Kandaghat, home to the Chail Palace and one of the world's highest cricket grounds.
- Tara Devi: a hilltop temple near Shoghi with views over the Shimla ridge.
Adding Kasauli or Chail turns the ride into a full-day journey. On a one-way booking, mention detours when booking so the kilometres are counted in the quote. Himachal's official tourism information is on Himachal Tourism.
Arriving in Shimla: drop points, sealed roads and parking
Shimla's centre is built on a ridge and some of its most famous roads are closed to ordinary vehicles. The Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian zones, and a number of connecting roads are restricted. Taxis stop at the nearest permitted point, typically Cart Road, the Lift near the Mall, Victory Tunnel, the Old Bus Stand, or the ISBT at Tutikandi. From the Lift, an elevator takes you up to the Mall level.
Hotels on the ring roads are simpler: Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti, Sanjauli, Lakkar Bazaar side, Totu and Summer Hill all have road access, as do the resorts outward at Mashobra, Chharabra, Kufri, Fagu and Naldehra. Tell us your hotel when booking and the chauffeur will call ahead to check where their porter meets vehicles. Parking in Shimla is limited to designated lots and charged at actual.
If you plan to keep a car in town, local hire of 8 hours and 80 km costs Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan and Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova. Our Shimla taxi service page covers local sightseeing, Kufri trips and station transfers.
Pickup variants across the Tricity

| Chandigarh railway station | meet at the main exit | convenient after the morning Shatabdi from Delhi |
| Kalka railway station | meet at the exit; already at the foot of the hills | for travellers who change their mind about the toy train |

Seasons: summer rush, monsoon slides and snow
April to June: the plains touch 40 degrees and Shimla is at its busiest. Weekend traffic at Parwanoo and inside Shimla can be heavy; leave Chandigarh before 7 am. July to mid-September: the monsoon brings beautiful mist and real risk. Landslides can close the highway between Parwanoo and Solan for hours; our dispatch desk tracks road status each morning and your chauffeur will hold at a safe town rather than push through a blocked stretch.
October and November: clear views of the snow ranges, Diwali and Durga Puja holidays, pleasant days. December to February: snowfall at Kufri, Narkanda and sometimes Shimla itself. Roads beyond Dhalli towards Kufri can close after heavy snow, and ice on shaded bends needs slow, careful driving; chauffeurs follow the local police advisories on chains and closures, and wait out a closure rather than gamble on it. Christmas, New Year and the first snowfall draw huge crowds, so book at least a week ahead.
Pickups across the Tricity and from IXC airport
We pick up at the same per-km fare from anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula: the Sector 17 and Sector 22 hotels, Sector 35, Sector 43 ISBT, Chandigarh railway station, IT Park, Industrial Area, Zirakpur and Kharar. For Chandigarh International Airport we track your flight and hold a name board at arrivals; waiting is free for 60 minutes after international and 30 minutes after domestic flights, then charged per hour.
A popular split for first-time visitors: ride the narrow-gauge toy train from Kalka up to Shimla, a slow and scenic heritage line through more than a hundred tunnels, and let the car meet you at Shimla station with the luggage it carried up by road. The return is then by taxi in half the time. If you want this, book the taxi as a one-way luggage transfer plus a return, and give us the train timing so the chauffeur is waiting at the exit when you arrive.
Coming by train? Many travellers get down at Chandigarh or Kalka. Tell us the train number and we will wait at the exit. For travellers from Delhi, our Delhi to Shimla taxi runs direct, or you can split the journey with the Delhi to Chandigarh cab and stay a night in the Tricity.

Onward from Shimla and group travel
Shimla is the start of the upper Himachal circuit. Narkanda for skiing slopes and apple orchards, Sarahan, Kinnaur, and the long drive via Mandi to Kullu and Manali all begin here. For the classic hill loop, see Himachal taxi service packages and our Manali taxi service for local days in the Kullu valley, or book the Chandigarh to Manali taxi as a separate leg. Travellers heading into border areas of Kinnaur and Spiti should check permit rules; foreign nationals may need a protected area permit.
Groups of 10 to 17 can take a Chandigarh tempo traveller or an Urbania on rent with pushback seats; families who want extra ground clearance for snow-season side roads often choose a Fortuner on rent. For weddings and executive guests, a Fortuner or a luxury SUV can be arranged via luxury car rental in Chandigarh. All vehicles in the programme are within four model years.
