Chandigarh is where most Himachal holidays actually begin. Families fly or drive in, meet cousins from Ludhiana and Ambala, and head for Shimla, Kasauli, Manali or Dharamshala the next morning. A tempo traveller in Chandigarh booked through RutzIndia.com gives that group one AC vehicle, one experienced hill driver and one fixed fare, from a 9 seat captain-chair Traveller to a 26 seat body for college and office groups. We also handle weddings across the tricity of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, gurudwara circuits in Punjab and airport transfers from Chandigarh International.
What a tempo traveller in Chandigarh costs
A tempo traveller on rent in Chandigarh is Rs 11,100 Pay Now to Reserve for 4 hours / 40 km, Rs 18,540 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hours / 80 km and Rs 10,200 Pay Now to Reserve for an airport transfer. For Shimla, Manali or Amritsar you pay Rs 78 per km with at least 250 km billed per day, plus 5% GST, tolls and Himachal entry tax.
Tricity local and airport rates include Chandigarh's 0.95 city factor; outstation per-km rates match the national card. The Traveller prices cover 9, 12 and 17 seats, and 20 or 26 seat bodies are priced on request.
| Chandigarh vehicle | Hills and highways | Tricity full day (8 hr / 80 km) | IXC airport run (to 40 km) | Tricity half day (4 hr / 40 km) | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mini bus | Rs 134.4 per km | Rs 39,900 | Rs 21,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 23,940 Pay Now to Reserve | 20 / 27 / 35 |
| Force Urbania | Rs 102 per km | Rs 25,650 | Rs 14,100 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve | 10 / 13 / 17 |
| Tempo Traveller | Rs 78 per km | Rs 18,540 | Rs 10,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,100 Pay Now to Reserve | 9 / 12 / 17, with 20 / 26 on request |
Add 5% GST to all fares. Road tolls, Himachal Pradesh and other state entry taxes or permits, and parking are recovered at the exact amount paid. Each night away from Chandigarh carries a driver allowance of Rs 1,500, and round trips are billed on at least 250 km for every calendar day the vehicle is out.

Hill runs to Shimla, Kasauli, Manali and Dharamshala
These are the trips that fill Chandigarh's Travellers from April to June and again from mid-December to February when snow arrives. Worked examples at Rs 78 per km:
- Kasauli and Barog, about 60 km: a day out is billed on the 250 km minimum, Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve. The last stretch after Dharampur is narrow; a 12 or 17 seater is ideal.
- Shimla, about 115 km (3.5 hours): a day trip is also covered by the 250 km minimum, Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve. A two-day stay with Kufri and Mashobra is billed on 500 km, about Rs 39,000 plus one driver night. See the Chandigarh to Shimla taxi page if a car suits your group better.
- Narkanda and the apple belt, about 180 km: a two-day trip is billed on 500 km.
- Manali, about 310 km (8 hours): the minimum two-day round trip bills 620 km, about Rs 48,360 Pay Now to Reserve. A more realistic four-day Manali, Solang and Atal Tunnel holiday is billed on 1,000 km, about Rs 78,000 plus three driver nights. Route notes and car fares are on the Chandigarh to Manali taxi page.
- Dharamshala and McLeodganj, about 240 km: three days including Palampur or Bir is billed on 750 km, about Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve.
- Spiti via Kinnaur: a seven to nine day loop needs a mountain-rated driver, early starts and flexible plans. We quote this individually.
Himachal's official portal lists attractions, snowfall advisories and the Rohtang permit process on Himachal Tourism. For all-car Himachal itineraries see our Himachal taxi service, and for local pickups once you arrive, the Shimla taxi service and Manali taxi service pages.
Book a Traveller for the hills
A five-day Shimla, Manali and Kullu plan from Chandigarh
- Day 1, Chandigarh to Shimla (about 115 km). Leave after breakfast, stop at Timber Trail or Barog for tea, and reach Shimla by lunch. Evening on the Ridge and Mall Road, which you walk; the vehicle parks at the permitted lot.
- Day 2, Kufri and Narkanda (about 130 km). Snow in winter, apple orchards in autumn, and the Hatu Peak temple above Narkanda.
- Day 3, Shimla to Manali (about 250 km). A long mountain day via Bilaspur and Mandi, or via the Kiratpur side, arriving by evening in Manali.
- Day 4, Solang and the Atal Tunnel (about 90 km). Paragliding and ropeway at Solang, then through the tunnel to Sissu if the road is open.
- Day 5, Manali to Chandigarh (about 310 km). Early start, a stop at Kullu's shawl factories, and home by evening.
Actual driving is roughly 900 km; five days carry a floor of 1,250 km, so the Traveller charge is Rs 97,500 Pay Now to Reserve, plus four nights of allowance, Himachal entry tax, tolls and GST. Families who want a slower pace simply add a day in Manali or Kasol.

Mountain driving: how we plan hill trips differently
A Traveller on a hill road is a different job from a Traveller on a city ring road, and we plan it that way.
- Right size. Above Parwanoo and beyond Mandi, 12 and 17 seat bodies are the sweet spot. For 22 people we send two 12 seaters rather than one 26 seater, because the shorter wheelbase takes hairpins and landslide diversions far better.
- Daylight on the steep sections. We time departures so that the climb beyond Kiratpur, Bilaspur or Solan is done in daylight, and we avoid pushing a tired driver into night driving after a long first day.
- Snow and ice. From December to February the roads around Kufri, Narkanda and Solang can freeze. Drivers carry chains where required, and on some days police stop vehicles at a snow point and local four-wheel-drive taxis take over for the last stretch; that cost is separate.
- Rest. The driver's night allowance covers food and a bed so he is fresh in the morning. Please allow him at least eight hours between duties.
- Motion sickness. The front rows of a Traveller are steadiest; seat anyone prone to nausea there and keep the AC on.
Tempo traveller vs Volvo bus, toy train or several cabs
| 12 people, Chandigarh to Manali and back over 4 days | What you pay for | Local sightseeing included? | Luggage | Flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One 12 seat Traveller | Rs 78,000 plus allowance, entry tax, tolls and GST | Yes, the same vehicle all trip | Inside plus roof carrier | Change plans daily, stop anywhere |
| Overnight Volvo bus | Tickets per head each way | No, hire local taxis in Manali | Hold luggage | Fixed night departures |
| Kalka-Shimla toy train | Tickets per head, Shimla only | No | Limited | Slow and scenic, not for Manali |
| Three sedans | Rs 108 per km across three cars | Yes | Boot of each car | Group splits on the road |
Buses win on price for two or three travellers. For a family or friends' group, the Traveller is usually cheaper per head once local sightseeing is counted, and it keeps everyone together on mountain roads.

Chasing snow: December to February from Chandigarh
Every winter the tricity's group enquiries turn to one question: where will it snow this weekend? Kufri and Narkanda above Shimla, Solang and the far side of the Atal Tunnel near Manali, and Dalhousie and Khajjiar further west are the usual answers. A few practical points make these trips work:
- Snowfall is unpredictable. We watch forecasts and road advisories for the days before departure, and we would rather move your plan by a day than send a vehicle into a closed road.
- Last-mile rules. When roads are icy, police sometimes halt vehicles at a snow point and local four-wheel-drive taxis or chained vehicles take visitors further up. That local cost is separate from your Traveller fare.
- Chains and driving hours. Drivers carry chains where required, and we avoid driving on ice after dark.
- Clothing and space. Snow boots, jackets and gloves are bulky; plan one fewer passenger per row than in summer.
- Holiday peaks. Christmas to New Year and the Republic Day weekend are the busiest; book three to four weeks ahead.
A Kasauli and Chail day out for office teams
Short on time, many tricity companies and college societies choose a single hill day rather than a long weekend. A typical plan leaves Mohali or Chandigarh at 7 am, climbs past Parwanoo and Dharampur to Kasauli by 9, and walks the Mall, Christ Church and the Monkey Point area (which sits inside a cantonment and may require identity documents or have restricted hours). After lunch the Traveller continues along the ridge to Chail, with its palace grounds and the high cricket ground, and returns via Kandaghat and Solan before dark. The day is roughly 180 to 220 km and is billed on the 250 km floor, Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve in a Traveller, with tolls, parking and GST extra.
Monsoon season in the hills
From July to mid-September heavy rain can cause landslides on the Kalka-Shimla highway, the Mandi-Kullu stretch and roads into Kinnaur and Chamba. Himachal's authorities close sections when needed, and we follow those advisories rather than trying to push through. For monsoon trips we plan shorter driving days, keep a buffer day in longer itineraries, and suggest destinations with good road access, such as Kasauli, Chail or Shimla. If a road is closed on your travel date, we help re-plan; kilometres actually driven are what you pay for, and our standard cancellation terms otherwise apply.
Student and school trips: how we keep them safe
Tricity colleges and schools are some of our most frequent Traveller customers, and the process is stricter than for private groups. We ask for a named teacher or faculty coordinator who travels with the group, a passenger list with emergency contacts, and written approval from the institution where required. Drivers for student trips do not drive at night on hill roads, stops are fixed in advance, and the coordinator has the driver's details the evening before. For groups above 26, we split students across vehicles or use a mini bus on rent.
Summer rush and parking in the hill towns
From mid-April to June, and again over Dussehra and Diwali, Shimla, Manali and Kasauli fill with visitors from the plains. The Shimla Mall and Ridge are closed to most vehicles, so the Traveller drops you at a lift or entry point and parks in the multi-level lots; in Manali, the Mall Road and Old Manali lanes are too tight for any large vehicle. Expect slow traffic on the Parwanoo-Solan stretch on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, and at the Aut tunnel and Mandi bypass on long weekends. Starting early is the single best way to protect your holiday from traffic.
Motion sickness and elders on hill roads
Hairpin bends affect some travellers more than others. Seat anyone prone to nausea in the front two rows, where the ride is steadiest, keep the AC on rather than opening windows to diesel fumes, and eat lightly before the climb. The driver will stop at safe pull-outs when asked, and he drives the ghats at an even pace rather than braking hard into bends. Carry any medication your doctor recommends for travel sickness, and water for everyone.
Food and rest stops on the Manali highway
On the Kiratpur side, drivers usually stop for breakfast around Swarghat, for lunch near Bilaspur or Sundernagar, and for tea at Pandoh or the Mandi riverfront, where roadside dhabas serve rajma chawal, parathas and Himachali siddu. On the Shimla road, Dharampur and Solan have popular stops. The driver knows which places have clean washrooms, which matters on a long family day.
Gurudwara, shrine and heritage circuits
Punjab and the Shivalik foothills are dotted with pilgrim sites that are ideal for a family Traveller:
- Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, about 85 km: busiest during Hola Mohalla, around Holi. A day trip is billed on 250 km, Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve.
- Naina Devi, about 110 km, often combined with Anandpur Sahib in the same day.
- Mata Chintpurni and Jwala Ji, about 160 to 200 km: two days with a night halt is typical, billed on 500 km, about Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve.
- Amritsar, about 230 km: the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Attari-Wagah retreat ceremony over two days is billed on 500 km, about Rs 39,000 plus a driver night. Our Amritsar tempo traveller team can take over if you are flying out of Amritsar, and car fares are on the Amritsar taxi service page.
- Vaishno Devi: Katra is about 400 km away, so most groups drive over two days or take the train to Jammu and use our Jammu to Katra taxi.
Mata Mansa Devi in Panchkula, Pinjore Gardens and Morni Hills are closer; a 4 or 8 hour local package covers them.
A day in the City Beautiful with the whole group
Visitors often spend one day in Chandigarh itself before heading uphill, and the planned sectors make it an easy city for a big vehicle. A typical 8 hour / 80 km day (Rs 18,540 Pay Now to Reserve) starts at the Rock Garden when it opens, moves to Sukhna Lake for a boat ride and the lakeside promenade, then the Rose Garden in Sector 16 and lunch in Sector 17 or the Elante mall area. The afternoon can go to the Capitol Complex precinct, then Pinjore's Yadavindra Gardens, about 20 km away, where the terraced Mughal garden is lit in the evening. Wide roads and generous parking at most of these stops mean even a 20 or 26 seat Traveller manages comfortably, and the driver waits at each lot while you explore.
Areas we serve across the tricity
We pick up at the tricity rate card from every sector in Chandigarh, including Sectors 17, 22, 26, 34, 35 and 43, and from Manimajra, Mohali Phases 3B2, 7, 8, 10 and 11, Aerocity Mohali, Kharar, Landran, New Chandigarh, Zirakpur, Dhakoli, Dera Bassi, Panchkula Sectors 5, 8 and 20, Pinjore and Kalka. Railway groups are met at Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula (Chandimandir) and Kalka stations.
Himachal taxes, permits and driver allowance explained
Entry tax. Himachal Pradesh charges an entry tax on commercial vehicles registered in other states. The driver pays it at the border or online, and we add the receipted amount to your bill.
Green tax and local permits. Some towns and areas levy additional fees, for example for vehicles going to Rohtang or into certain eco-sensitive zones. These are passed on at cost.
Driver allowance. Rs 1,500 per night when the vehicle stays in the hills. Many hotels in Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala have drivers' dormitories, which keeps the figure at the lower end.
Road rules. Speed limits on hill roads are low, and commercial vehicles must carry valid fitness, permit and insurance documents. National rules for tourist permits and vehicle standards are published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Regular, Maharaja or Urbania for Chandigarh groups
Regular Traveller. Pushback seats in a 2+1 layout, roof AC with vents over each row, reading lights, charging points and a music system; it is the hill-trip workhorse in 12 and 17 seat versions.
Maharaja Traveller. Nine captain chairs with extra legroom and curtains, same per-km rate. On a long Manali day it is the most restful way for elders to travel.
Force Urbania. A smoother, quieter van with individual recliners and AC vents, better suspension on broken mountain stretches, and a higher cabin. It costs Rs 102 per km and Rs 25,650 for a tricity day.
All vehicles are within four model years and come cleaned, with a first-aid kit. No smoking or drinking inside, and the driver has the final word on safety calls such as stopping for fog, ice or landslides.
A Punjabi wedding in the tricity, vehicle by vehicle
A three-day Punjabi wedding in Mohali or Zirakpur usually runs from a mehndi and sangeet evening at a banquet hall, through the chooda and haldi mornings at home, to the anand karaj at a gurudwara and the reception at a marriage palace. Guests arrive at Chandigarh airport, Chandigarh station and from Delhi by road. We plan airport pickups against flight times, run 12 and 17 seat Travellers on loops between two or three hotels and each venue, keep an Urbania for the elders and pair the fleet with a car for the couple. The family receives a single GST invoice for everything.
Weddings, colleges and offices across the tricity
Weddings. Punjabi weddings in the tricity move between marriage palaces on the Zirakpur-Patiala road, banquet halls in Mohali and farmhouses around Kharar, Landran and New Chandigarh. Guests arrive from Delhi, Ludhiana and abroad, so airport and railway pickups are part of the plan. We run 12 and 17 seat Travellers as shuttles, an Urbania for elders, and luxury cars for the couple from luxury car rental in Chandigarh. November to February is peak season; baisakhi weekends in April are also busy.
Colleges and schools. Students from Panjab University and the private universities around Mohali and Kharar hire 17, 20 and 26 seat Travellers for Kasauli day trips and Manali tours, and schools hire them for Morni Hills and Pinjore excursions. We ask for a responsible adult's name and a signed passenger list for every student trip.
Corporate. Companies in Mohali's IT City and the Panchkula industrial areas book Travellers for offsites in the hills, plant visits in Baddi and Nalagarh, and cricket-day outings. We issue GST invoices on your company details, and you can pay by card, UPI or bank transfer.
Airport, station and city pickups
Chandigarh International Airport is on the Mohali and Zirakpur side, roughly 12 km from Sector 17. The driver tracks your flight, waits at arrivals with a name board and allows 60 minutes free after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one; the hourly rate applies after that. We also meet groups at Chandigarh railway station, Kalka station (handy if you arrive by train and want to skip the toy train with heavy bags) and the ISBTs in Sectors 17 and 43. Civic information on sectors, events and traffic diversions is on the Chandigarh administration website.
For small parties, compare sedans and Innovas on our Chandigarh taxi service, and the Delhi to Chandigarh taxi page if some of the family are coming up from Delhi separately.
How much is a tempo traveller in Chandigarh in 2026?
Fares updated September 2026. Hill holidays are billed on kilometres, so the numbers that matter are the per-km rate, the daily floor, the driver's night allowance and, for tricity days, the local package. This table puts them together for every size.
| Chandigarh fleet | Kilometre rate for hill and highway trips | Daily floor | Night allowance for the driver | Tricity day, 8 hr / 80 km | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maharaja Traveller, 9 seats | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,540 Pay Now to Reserve | elders on Manali or Dharamshala runs |
| Traveller, 12 seats | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,540 Pay Now to Reserve | families in the hills |
| Traveller, 17 seats | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,540 Pay Now to Reserve | colleges, offsites, Kasauli |
| Traveller, 20 seats | on request | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | on request | plains, Amritsar, weddings |
| Traveller, 26 seats | on request | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | on request | day trips with light luggage |
| Force Urbania, up to 17 | Rs 102 | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,650 Pay Now to Reserve | premium hill tours |
| Mini bus, up to 35 | Rs 130 | 250 km | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,900 Pay Now to Reserve | large wedding loops |
On a four-day Manali holiday the maths runs like this: about 620 km of actual driving, but four calendar days carry a floor of 1,000 km, so the Traveller charge is Rs 78,000 Pay Now to Reserve, plus three nights of allowance, Himachal entry tax, tolls and GST.
Choosing a seat size for the hills and the tricity
9 seat Maharaja Traveller
Nine large reclining chairs with space between them. On an eight-hour climb to Manali, the difference between a captain chair and a bench seat is felt by every elder in the group, and the extra floor space swallows winter jackets, boots and heavier suitcases. Same Rs 78 per km as the other Travellers; you simply seat fewer people.
12 seat Traveller
The hill-station standard. Short enough for the switchbacks after Parwanoo and the narrow roads of Kasauli, Chail and McLeodganj, with a rear luggage space and roof carrier for a week of clothes. It is our first recommendation for families on the Shimla-Kufri-Narkanda circuit. More detail on our 12 seater tempo traveller page.
17 seat Traveller
The value option when every seat is used: college groups from the tricity universities, office teams on a Kasauli or Morni Hills offsite, and gurudwara groups heading to Anandpur Sahib. For multi-day hill trips we suggest fourteen or fifteen passengers so winter luggage fits.
20 seat Traveller
A longer body that shines on the plains: the Chandigarh-Amritsar highway, the Ambala-Delhi run and wedding loops between Zirakpur marriage palaces and Mohali hotels. On the steep, tight Himachal roads we prefer two smaller vehicles. Priced on request.
26 seat Traveller
The largest Traveller, for single-day outings with light luggage, such as a school trip to Pinjore and Morni Hills or a sangat to Fatehgarh Sahib. For 30 or more, a mini bus on rent or a full coach from bus on rent is a better fit, and for small groups of five or six an Innova Crysta on rent is cheaper.
For a quieter premium cabin, choose the Force Urbania on rent.
Trip cost from Chandigarh: six favourite group trips
The billed distance is whichever is larger, the real round trip or 250 km for each calendar day; multiply by the rate. Himachal entry tax, tolls, parking, the driver's nights and 5% GST come on top.
| Trip | Calendar days | Round-trip km (approx.) | Km billed | Traveller | Urbania | Mini bus | Driver nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kasauli | 1 | 120 | 250 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 33,750 Pay Now to Reserve | 0 |
| Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi | 1 | 220 | 250 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 33,750 Pay Now to Reserve | 0 |
| Shimla and Kufri | 2 | 230 | 500 | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 51,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 67,500 Pay Now to Reserve | 1 |
| Amritsar | 2 | 460 | 500 | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 51,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 67,500 Pay Now to Reserve | 1 |
| Dharamshala and McLeodganj | 3 | 480 | 750 | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 76,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,01,250 Pay Now to Reserve | 2 |
| Manali | 4 | 620 | 1,000 | Rs 78,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,02,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,35,000 Pay Now to Reserve | 3 |
Fifteen friends sharing the Manali trip pay about Rs 5,190 each before extras. Groups driving up from Delhi can compare the full-distance fares on the Delhi to Manali taxi page, since starting in Chandigarh saves roughly 460 billable kilometres on the round trip. The rules behind these numbers are on our fares page.
