A Kashmir taxi service is not quite like hiring a car anywhere else in India. The valley's roads are beautiful and mostly good, but the best-known meadows are managed by local taxi unions, the high passes close for months in winter, and security checks shape the timetable. RutzIndia.com plans your Kashmir trip around all of that: a chauffeur-driven sedan, Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller from Srinagar or Jammu, with the local rules explained before you arrive rather than at the taxi stand.
Kashmir taxi fares: day trips, tours and transfers
RutzIndia.com's Kashmir taxi service costs Rs 36 per km in a sedan and Rs 57.6 per km in an Innova Crysta for outstation days, with a 250 km daily minimum, so a Srinagar to Gulmarg day trip is Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan. A Srinagar local day is Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve and Jammu to Katra is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies), before 5% GST.
Kashmir fares follow the national rate card on our fares page. City work inside Srinagar is billed as a local package (8 hours / 80 km, or 4 hours / 40 km); trips out to the meadows are outstation round trips, billed at the larger of the actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day. Tolls, parking, entry fees and any state permits are added at actual cost, and on multi-day trips the chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night applies.
| Trip | Distance (about) | How it is billed | Sedan | Innova Crysta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar airport to Dal Lake / Boulevard hotels | 14 km | Airport transfer | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Srinagar sightseeing: Mughal gardens, Shankaracharya, Hazratbal | within city | 8 hr / 80 km local | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jammu to Katra (Vaishno Devi base) | 50 km | One way (minimum fare applies) | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Srinagar to Gulmarg and back | 50 km each way | 1 day, 250 km minimum | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Srinagar to Sonamarg and back | 80 km each way | 1 day, 250 km minimum | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Srinagar to Pahalgam, overnight, and back | 95 km each way | 2 days, 500 km minimum | Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jammu to Srinagar | 250 km | One way | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Six-day Srinagar-based valley tour | varies | 6 days, 1,500 km minimum | Rs 54,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 85,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
A Tempo Traveller for a group runs at Rs 78 per km (so Rs 19,500 for a 250 km day), and a Fortuner at Rs 84 per km. Add 5% GST, and for overnight trips the driver's night allowance. The six-day example assumes five nights and would add Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve in allowances.

Six-day Kashmir itinerary, kilometre by kilometre
This is the plan most families choose for a first visit, based in Srinagar with one night in Pahalgam. The kilometres are what the car actually drives; the fare is set by the 250 km daily minimum.
| Day | Route and highlights | Km driven (about) | Night at |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Srinagar airport, check in to a Dal Lake houseboat, evening shikara, Nishat and Shalimar Bagh | 35 km | Srinagar |
| 2 | Day trip to Gulmarg: Gondola to Kongdori, meadows, return by evening | 105 km | Srinagar |
| 3 | Day trip to Sonamarg: Sindh valley drive, Thajiwas walk or pony | 165 km | Srinagar |
| 4 | Srinagar to Pahalgam via Pampore saffron fields and Avantipora ruins | 100 km | Pahalgam |
| 5 | Pahalgam union-taxi circuit (Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari), return to Srinagar | 100 km | Srinagar |
| 6 | Old city, Hazratbal, Shankaracharya, drop at Srinagar airport | 40 km | - |
| Total | about 545 km, billed 1,500 km | 5 nights |
Package fare for the six-day tour by car class
| Car class | Rate | Billed km | Car and driver fare | Driver night allowance (5 nights) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Swift Dzire class) | Rs 36/km | 1,500 | Rs 54,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| MUV (Ertiga class) | Rs 42/km | 1,500 | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta | Rs 57.6/km | 1,500 | Rs 85,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller (up to 16) | Rs 78/km | 1,500 | Rs 1,17,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner | Rs 84/km | 1,500 | Rs 1,26,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
All figures are before 5% GST. Parking, entry fees, Pahalgam union taxis, Gondola tickets and ponies are extra and paid at actual cost or directly to the operators. The fare covers the car and chauffeur for all six days, including waiting while you sightsee, so there is no hourly meter running at Gulmarg or at the houseboat ghat.

The taxi-union rules at Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg
This is the part most visitors are not told in advance. At several Kashmir resorts, local sightseeing beyond the town is reserved for vehicles registered with the local taxi union, and outside cabs, including ours, are not allowed to do those internal runs. The rules are set locally, rates are fixed by the unions, and both change from season to season, so treat the points below as a guide and check on the day.
- Pahalgam: our car takes you from Srinagar to Pahalgam and back. For the three classic valleys, Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari, you hire a Pahalgam union taxi from the town's stand and pay the union's fixed rate directly. These roads run through protected forest areas, and only registered union vehicles are permitted on them.
- Sonamarg: our car drives to Sonamarg. The Thajiwas glacier walk is usually done on foot or by pony, and trips further up towards Zero Point on the Zojila road are generally made in local union vehicles hired at Sonamarg.
- Gulmarg: our car drives right up to Gulmarg and parks near the Gondola base. Inside the bowl you move on foot, by pony or by sledge in winter, and the Gulmarg Gondola takes you to Kongdori and Apharwat.
- Doodhpathri and Yusmarg: reachable by our car for a day trip; inside the meadows, local ponies and walking are the norm.
Your chauffeur waits at the stand while you do the local circuit, and his waiting time is part of the day's booking. Union fares, pony charges and Gondola tickets are paid by you directly and are not on our invoice. We would rather tell you this now than have you surprised at the Pahalgam stand.
Seasons in the valley, month by month
Kashmir changes dramatically with the season, and the right car and plan depend on when you travel:
- March to April: spring. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks, usually from late March into April, and the almond orchards bloom. Sonamarg may still be snow-bound early in the season.
- May to June: peak tourist season, pleasant weather everywhere, and the busiest time on the Gulmarg and Pahalgam roads. Book early.
- July to August: the Amarnath Yatra runs from Pahalgam (Chandanwari) and Baltal near Sonamarg. Security convoys and road restrictions affect those routes on some days, and hotels in Pahalgam and Sonamarg fill with pilgrims.
- September to November: autumn, with chinar trees turning red and gold and quieter roads. Excellent for photography.
- December to February: winter. Gulmarg becomes a ski resort and Srinagar sees snow. The Zojila beyond Sonamarg and the Mughal Road are closed, and heavy snowfall can shut even the Jammu-Srinagar highway for a day or two. Our chauffeurs carry snow chains where needed, and we keep winter plans flexible.
The coldest spell, Chillai Kalan, runs from late December to the end of January. Days are short, so we plan day trips to be back in Srinagar before dark.

Srinagar in a day: what the local package covers
The 8 hours / 80 km local package at Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan fits a full Srinagar day comfortably:
- The Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh along the Dal Lake shore, then Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal on the Zabarwan hillside for the view over the lake.
- Shankaracharya temple on the hill above the Boulevard, reached by a road and then a flight of steps; bags and phones are usually left in the car.
- Hazratbal shrine on the western shore of Dal, and the white marble domes seen from the lake.
- The old city: Jamia Masjid, the Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, and the lanes of papier-mache and walnut-wood workshops.
- Lal Chowk and Polo View for shopping, and a sunset shikara ride from the Boulevard ghats.
The Tulip Garden, when it is open in spring, fits into the same day. In peak months, Mughal garden car parks fill early, so the chauffeur will suggest starting by 9 am.
Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam: how each day runs
Gulmarg. Leave Srinagar by 8 am through Tangmarg; the final climb is about 13 km of hairpins through pine forest. The car parks near the Gondola base. Phase 1 of the Gondola goes to Kongdori, Phase 2 up towards Apharwat; queues are long in May, June and on winter weekends, so book tickets online in advance where the operator allows. Back in Srinagar by early evening.
Sonamarg. A longer day along the Sindh river, through Kangan and Gund, with the valley narrowing into steep meadows and glaciers. From the Sonamarg market, the Thajiwas glacier is a walk or pony ride. Zero Point further up the Zojila road is usually reached in local union vehicles. In winter the road beyond Sonamarg is closed, and even Sonamarg itself may be reached only on good days.
Pahalgam. Break the drive at Pampore's saffron fields (in bloom from late October), the ruins of Avantipora and the cricket-bat workshops of Sangam. In Pahalgam, the union taxis take you to Aru, Betaab valley and Chandanwari, while our car waits at the stand. Stay a night by the Lidder river for the evening light.
Beyond the classic circuit: Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Gurez and Ladakh
- Doodhpathri is a gentle meadow valley about 45 km from Srinagar, quiet compared with Gulmarg, and a good day trip for families.
- Yusmarg, about 50 km south-west, offers pine forest and pony trails.
- Gurez valley, north of Bandipora over the Razdan pass, is remote and beautiful, open roughly from late spring to autumn; it needs a sturdy car such as a Fortuner and a day's buffer for weather.
- Ladakh by road: Srinagar to Leh is about 420 km over the Zojila pass through Drass and Kargil, a two-day drive when the pass is open, usually from late spring to early winter. Ladakh has its own local taxi-union rules for sightseeing around Leh, similar to Pahalgam's, so plan for local vehicles there.
Winter driving in the valley: what changes
From December to February the valley runs on a different clock, and our Kashmir chauffeurs adjust:
- Late starts, early finishes. Roads can be icy until the sun is up, so day trips leave around 9 am and aim to be back before dusk, when temperatures drop quickly.
- Chains and traction. After fresh snow, the traffic police sometimes allow only chained or four-wheel-drive vehicles on the final climbs, such as the Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch. When that happens, the chauffeur fits chains or you switch to a permitted local vehicle for the last few kilometres.
- Warm cabins. Every car runs its heater throughout, and the chauffeur keeps the engine ready while you are out in the snow.
- Road status every morning. Snow can close the Jammu-Srinagar highway or the Sonamarg road for a day; we check official advisories before each departure and move day trips around rather than cancel them.
- Gulmarg's ski season brings skiers with bulky equipment; tell us so we send a car with enough boot space or a roof carrier.
Getting to Kashmir: airport, highway or rail
By air: Srinagar airport (SXR) is the usual arrival point. It has an outer security check where vehicles and bags are screened before reaching the terminal, so allow extra time for departures, at least two and a half to three hours before your flight. Arrivals are straightforward: your chauffeur meets you with a name board, with the standard 30 minutes of free waiting after a domestic landing and 60 after an international one, and we track the flight. See the Srinagar airport page from the Airports Authority of India for flight information.
By road: the Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH-44) is about 250 km and takes seven to nine hours, passing through the Chenani-Nashri tunnel and the Banihal tunnel under the Pir Panjal. Landslides in the Ramban stretch can close it after heavy rain, so we keep a buffer day on road-based itineraries.
By rail: the rail link through the Pir Panjal now connects Katra with the valley, which gives a new option for pilgrims combining Vaishno Devi with Srinagar. We can meet you at the station with the same arrangement as an airport pickup.
The Vaishno Devi leg: Jammu to Katra
Many Kashmir trips begin or end with Mata Vaishno Devi. The Jammu to Katra taxi is about 50 km, roughly 1.5 hours, at Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve one way in a sedan and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, as the minimum fare applies on such a short run. From Katra the 12 km walk to the Bhawan starts at Banganga; ponies, palkis, battery cars on part of the route, and a helicopter service from Katra to Sanjichhat are run by the shrine board and its licensed operators.
Pilgrims must register for the yatra before starting the climb; registration and current facilities are published by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Our chauffeur can wait at Katra while you complete the darshan, or return to collect you the next day. For other shrine circuits, see our pilgrimage taxi service.
Choosing the right vehicle for Kashmir roads
- Sedan (Swift Dzire class): fine for couples in Srinagar and on the good roads to Gulmarg and Pahalgam in summer.
- Innova Crysta: the most popular Kashmir car. Higher ground clearance, more luggage space for woollens, and comfortable for six. Book it for winter or for families.
- Toyota Fortuner: for snow driving and rougher stretches, and for travellers who want a sturdier ride. Rs 84 per km.
- Tempo Traveller: for groups of 10 to 16, such as family reunions, school trips or corporate offsites. See tempo traveller on rent.
Every car is within four model years and carries commercial registration. Our Kashmir chauffeurs are used to hill driving, snow conditions and the security checkpoints on the main roads.
Houseboats, hotels and practical tips
Most visitors spend at least a night on a Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboat. Houseboats are reached by shikara from the ghats, so the chauffeur drops you and your bags at the ghat, and the houseboat's shikara takes you across. Keep your valuables in a day bag for that short crossing.
A few other tips from our Kashmir desk:
- Carry government photo ID at all times; checkpoints may ask for it.
- Prepaid mobile SIMs from other states may not work in Jammu and Kashmir; postpaid connections usually do.
- Carry some cash for union taxis, ponies and small shops in Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- Dress in layers even in summer; Gulmarg and Sonamarg are much colder than Srinagar.
The official district portal of Srinagar lists tourist places and local notices, the national Incredible India portal has destination guides for Jammu and Kashmir, and background on the Lidder valley is in the Pahalgam article.
Kashmir for families, honeymooners and groups
Different travellers want different things from the valley, and the car choice follows:
- Honeymoon couples usually book a sedan or an Innova Crysta on rent for extra comfort, add a second houseboat night and a slower Gulmarg day.
- Families with grandparents prefer the Innova Crysta for its higher seat, and fewer long day trips; swap Sonamarg for Doodhpathri if the long drive is tiring.
- Snow seekers in winter should book a Fortuner on rent and keep plans flexible around road openings.
- Groups and wedding parties travel together in a Tempo Traveller; relatives coming from Punjab can start with a Tempo Traveller in Amritsar and drive up through Jammu.
- Kashmiris abroad returning home for family events often keep one car for the whole visit through NRI car hire in India.
Travellers starting in Delhi can fly to Srinagar, or take the road via Amritsar; the Delhi to Amritsar taxi covers the first leg, and our taxi service in Delhi handles the airport and station runs at the start.
Booking, payment and cancellation
Tell us your dates, arrival point and group size on the online booker, or WhatsApp the desk with a rough itinerary and we will price it day by day. Payment is by card or UPI, and companies can receive a 5% GST invoice.
The cancellation policy is the same as for all RutzIndia.com bookings: free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% retained within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show. If a highway closure or official restriction stops the trip, we reschedule rather than penalise you. See the cancellation policy.
Combine Kashmir with the rest of the north
Kashmir pairs well with other northern trips. Travellers often continue to Himachal through Pathankot and Dalhousie (see our Himachal taxi service), or finish in Amritsar for the Golden Temple via the taxi service in Amritsar. All round trips follow the same outstation cab rules, and our tours page lists other road journeys across India.
