Amritsar is a city people visit together: sangats from gurdwaras across India, NRI families home for a wedding, school groups on a heritage tour, friends who want to see the flag-lowering at Attari. A Tempo Traveller in Amritsar keeps those groups in one vehicle from the airport to the Harmandir Sahib and on to the border or the hills. RutzIndia.com rents 12, 17, 20 and 26-seat Force Travellers with a chauffeur for local days, airport transfers and multi-day trips into Himachal and Jammu, bookable online with a fixed fare.
Amritsar Tempo Traveller rates, trip by trip
In Amritsar a Tempo Traveller costs Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hours and 80 km, enough for the Golden Temple and the Wagah border ceremony in one day, Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve for a 4-hour, 40 km city slot, and Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve for an airport transfer. Longer trips are Rs 78 per km with a 250 km daily minimum. Prices exclude 5% GST, tolls, permits and parking.
Local packages in Amritsar carry a 0.92 multiplier, so the city is one of the more affordable places in India to hire a group van. Distance-based touring uses the national rate.
| Amritsar trip | Rough distance | Days | How billed | Traveller fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harmandir Sahib, Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum | in the old city | half day | 4 hr / 40 km | Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Golden Temple plus Attari-Wagah Beating Retreat | about 70 to 80 km | 1 | 8 hr / 80 km | Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tarn Taran and Goindwal Sahib gurdwaras | about 110 km loop | 1 | 250 km minimum | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj | about 200 km each way | 2 | 500 km | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve |

| Katra for Vaishno Devi | about 260 km each way | 2 | 520 km actual | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve |
| One way to Delhi | about 450 km | 1 | actual km | Rs 35,100 Pay Now to Reserve |
Round trips are charged on the actual distance or 250 km a day, whichever is higher. When the chauffeur stays overnight with you, his allowance of Rs 1,500 a night is added. Tolls, parking near the temple and at Attari, and the Himachal or Jammu and Kashmir entry permits for trips across the state border are billed at actual cost. See the fare notes for how extras are shown on your invoice.

Van sizes against rate, floor and allowance
Sangat organisers in Amritsar usually collect contributions before the trip, so they need the whole cost picture per van. This table lays it out size by size, with a two-day Vaishno Devi run to Katra, about 520 km of actual driving, as the worked example.
| Seating | Van | Katra and back, 2 days | Rate a km | Floor per day | Floor in rupees | Allowance for each night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 recliners | Force Traveller | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 10 or 13 captain seats | Force Urbania | Rs 53,040 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 102 | 250 km | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 12 | Force Traveller | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 17 | Force Traveller | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 20 | Force Traveller | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 26 | Force Traveller | Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 27 to 35 | Mini bus | Rs 70,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 130 | 250 km | Rs 33,750 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
On the Katra run, one night of allowance, the Jammu and Kashmir entry levy, highway tolls and Katra parking come on top, with 5% GST on the fare. For full-day events in the city, gurpurab processions or a wedding that runs from anand karaj to late reception, the 12-hour, 120 km option is the day fare times one and a half, plus 40 km at the van's per-km rate. For a Traveller that works out at about Rs 30,030 Pay Now to Reserve, for an Urbania about Rs 41,340 Pay Now to Reserve and for a mini bus about Rs 63,360 Pay Now to Reserve, before tax.
From 9 to 26 seats: what suits which Amritsar group
All our Amritsar vans are high-roof Force Travellers with AC vents over each row, reclining seats, a music system and a covered carrier on the roof. The walled city around the Darbar Sahib is pedestrian at its heart, so length matters less there than on the hill roads to Dharamshala and Dalhousie.
9 recliners for elders and NRI parents
Families flying in from Canada, the UK or Australia with parents in their seventies want a van without being squeezed into bench rows. A 12-seat shell fitted with nine broad recliners does that at the standard Traveller rate. If the step is the problem, the 10-seat Force Urbania sits lower and rides softer.
12 seats for airport arrivals and the hills
Ten or twelve passengers with international luggage is the classic ATQ pickup, and the 12-seater is also the best body for Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie, where hairpins and cramped parking punish longer vans. See the 12-seater Tempo Traveller page for layouts.
17 seats for gurdwara yatras
A sangat of fifteen or sixteen heading to Tarn Taran, Goindwal and Khadoor Sahib, or on to Anandpur Sahib, fits a 17-seater well. Light bags and a day's worth of langar-hall visits suit its smaller boot.
20 seats for Punjabi wedding loops
Winter weddings in Amritsar move guests between Ranjit Avenue hotels and marriage palaces on the GT Road and Majitha Road. Twenty-seat vans run those loops efficiently and still fit palace gates.
26 seats for schools and big sangats
School trips to the Partition Museum, Gobindgarh Fort and Wagah, and large sangats from other states, use the 26-seater on the flat Punjab roads. For more than 26, or for Jammu and Himachal trips with big groups, the mini bus on rent or a larger bus is more economical than two long vans.

Regular Traveller, maharaja cabin or Urbania
Most Amritsar bookings use the regular Traveller, whose reclining rows and roof rack suit city days and pilgrim runs alike. When a maharaja cabin, with fewer and wider seats, is free on your date it costs the same per kilometre. The Urbania is the step up in refinement: a modern van with a flatter floor and quieter ride at Rs 102 a kilometre, or Rs 24,840 Pay Now to Reserve for an Amritsar local day, and our suggestion when grandparents are travelling to the hills.
Longer trips from Amritsar with a per-van budget
Beyond the trips in the first table, here are seven more. The last column is the budget per van after adding 5% GST and the lowest and highest overnight allowance. Tolls, state entry levies, parking and hotels come on top.
| From Amritsar to | Days | Distance charged | Traveller fare | Budget per van |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jalandhar and Kapurthala palaces | 1 | 250 km | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 20,490 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Chandigarh, one way | 1 | about 230 km | Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve | about Rs 18,840 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib | 2 | 500 km | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 35,625 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur | 2 | 500 km | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 35,625 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Shimla and Kufri | 4 | 1,000 km | Rs 78,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 72,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Manali and Solang | 5 | 1,250 km | Rs 97,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 91,325 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Srinagar and Gulmarg via Jammu | 6 | 1,500 km | Rs 1,17,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,09,875 Pay Now to Reserve |
Car-sized groups can price the hill legs on our Chandigarh taxi service, Shimla taxi service, Manali taxi service and Kashmir taxi service pages.

Entry levies for Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir
An Amritsar-registered tourist van pays nothing extra within Punjab. Every hill trip, though, crosses a border: Himachal Pradesh at Pathankot or near Una for Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Shimla and Manali, and Jammu and Kashmir at Lakhanpur for Katra and Srinagar. Both states charge entry levies on tourist vehicles, and Himachal also has green-tax arrangements for some destinations such as Manali. Our chauffeur pays them at the barrier and the receipted amounts pass straight through to your invoice. State rules are set locally and published through the national Parivahan portal.
Localities we cover in Amritsar
We collect from hotels, homes, marriage palaces and stations across the city:
- Walled city: Golden Temple complex, Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, Town Hall, Chowk Passian, Hathi Gate
- Hotel belts: Ranjit Avenue, Lawrence Road, Mall Road, Queen's Road, Court Road, Circular Road
- Residential: Green Avenue, Basant Avenue, Model Town, Rani Ka Bagh, Putlighar, Chheharta, Verka
- Highways and airport side: GT Road, Majitha Road, Batala Road, Airport Road, Raja Sansi
The heritage street and plaza around the temple are closed to vehicles; for hotels inside that zone the chauffeur meets you at the nearest permitted point.
On board and house rules
Vans are cleaned before each duty and carry a first-aid box, an extinguisher and belts for every seat, with USB charging along most rows. Sangats often carry rumalas, karah prasad and langar supplies; the chauffeur keeps a clean, protected space for them. Heads are often covered on gurdwara days, and the van keeps a few spare scarves. No tobacco, smoking or alcohol in the vehicle at any time.
Monthly vans for NRI stays and institutions
NRI families home for a season, and colleges or hospitals that move staff and visitors daily, often prefer a van on a monthly plan. Our monthly car rental with driver arrangement fixes a chauffeur and a monthly kilometre allowance with one GST invoice, and families booking from abroad can read our NRI car hire in India guide.
Around the Darbar Sahib: parking and drop points
The Golden Temple sits at the heart of the walled city, and the approach is pedestrian. The heritage street from Town Hall to the temple, lined with restored façades, is closed to vehicles, so a Traveller never pulls up at the gate. The chauffeur uses one of two approaches: the multi-level parking close to the temple complex for groups who want to walk in directly, or a drop near Town Hall, from where the Partition Museum and the heritage street lead to the plaza. Jallianwala Bagh is immediately beside the temple.
A few practical notes our chauffeurs pass on to first-time visitors:
- Heads must be covered inside the complex; scarves are available at the entrance.
- The langar serves free meals to all at any hour; volunteers welcome help with washing up.
- Early morning, around the Palki Sahib procession, and late evening are the most peaceful times; midday on weekends is busiest.
- Shoes and bags are deposited at the free counters before entry.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which manages the complex, publishes visitor information on its official website.
Attari-Wagah and the Beating Retreat
The flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border, about 30 km west of the city, is Amritsar's other must-see. Groups should leave the city about two to two and a half hours before sunset, because vehicles park at a designated lot and the last stretch is on foot through security. Timings shift with the season, earlier in winter and later in summer, and the ceremony can be suspended at short notice; the chauffeur will confirm on the day. Bags are not allowed in the stands, so leave them in the van. Combining the temple in the morning with Wagah in the evening fits the 8 hr / 80 km package at Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve; if the day runs over, extra time is charged at the hourly rate.
Pickups at ATQ airport and Amritsar Junction
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) at Raja Sansi is about 12 to 15 km from the Golden Temple, typically 30 to 40 minutes. The Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve transfer covers up to 40 km, which includes nearly every hotel in the city. International flights from the Gulf, the UK and Southeast Asia bring many NRI families; after an international landing the chauffeur waits 60 minutes free, after a domestic landing 30 minutes, and then waiting is billed at the hourly rate. Every pickup includes flight tracking and a name board.
Amritsar Junction railway station is only about 2 km from the temple, and trains such as the Shatabdi from Delhi arrive at convenient hours. Groups staying on the Ranjit Avenue and GT Road hotel belts are picked up from the lobby. NRI families planning several weeks of family visits across Punjab should also read our NRI car hire in India page.
ATQ transfer fares across Amritsar and beyond
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport lies close to the city on its north-western side, so nearly all hotels are inside the Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve transfer. Further destinations add Rs 78 for each kilometre past 40.
| From ATQ airport to | Road distance, about | Traveller before GST |
|---|---|---|
| Ranjit Avenue and Lawrence Road | 8 to 11 km | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Golden Temple, Town Hall drop | 12 to 15 km | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| GT Road and Majitha Road palaces | 12 to 20 km | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Attari-Wagah border | about 30 km | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tarn Taran Sahib | about 38 km | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Batala | about 45 km | about Rs 10,260 |
| Jalandhar | about 90 km | about Rs 13,770 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Pathankot | about 115 km | about Rs 15,720 Pay Now to Reserve |
The airport operator posts terminal and arrival information on the Amritsar airport website. Our chauffeur tracks your flight and waits at the arrivals exit with a name board.
A Punjabi wedding day and the vans it needs
Amritsar weddings usually begin with a morning anand karaj at a gurdwara and end with a long evening at a marriage palace. For roughly 90 guests arriving from other cities and abroad, a plan we often propose:
| Vehicle | Role | Package | Fare before GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-seat Traveller | ATQ and station arrivals over two days | 8 hr / 80 km, 2 days | Rs 35,880 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 3 x 20-seat Travellers | Hotel to gurdwara, then palace loops | 12 hr / 120 km each | about Rs 90,090 |
| 1 x Force Urbania | Grandparents and close elders | 12 hr / 120 km | about Rs 41,340 Pay Now to Reserve |
That comes to about Rs 1,67,310 Pay Now to Reserve before GST and parking. For the doli car and the couple's arrival, see our national wedding car rental page.
A heritage walk and food trail with the van on standby
A half-day that many visiting families love: start at 4 pm at the Town Hall end of the heritage street and walk to the Partition Museum, then the Golden Temple plaza as the lights come up. The van then collects the group at the Town Hall side and drives to Lawrence Road for kulchas and lassi, to Katra Ahluwalia for sweets, and finishes at Gobindgarh Fort for its evening show. The 4-hour, 40 km slot at Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve covers it; the van's job is mainly to wait and to save tired legs between stops.
Fog on the GT Road and hill-road habits
From late December to January, dense fog blankets the GT Road and the Pathankot highway in the early hours. Our chauffeurs will delay a pre-dawn departure until visibility is safe rather than race to keep a schedule, which can push a Katra or Dharamshala arrival back by an hour or two; plan for that. Once past Pathankot, hill norms apply: uphill traffic has priority on narrow stretches, horns before blind bends, and no hill driving after dark.
Our Amritsar chauffeurs
The chauffeurs who drive our Amritsar vans hold commercial passenger licences and are police-verified. They speak Punjabi, Hindi and working English, know the drop points around the Darbar Sahib, and have driven the Jammu and Himachal hill roads many times. They do not drink or use tobacco on duty and keep to the limits for passenger vans on the highways.
Gurdwara circuits and the Majha heritage trail
Many sangats book a Traveller for a day of darshan beyond the city. Tarn Taran Sahib, with one of the largest sarovars in Punjab, is about 25 km south; Goindwal Sahib with its baoli of 84 steps and Khadoor Sahib are further along the Beas side. A loop of the three runs close to 110 km and is billed as one outstation day. Baba Bakala Sahib, Dera Baba Nanak and Ram Tirath, associated with the Ramayana, are other favourites. For Hola Mohalla in March, Anandpur Sahib is about 200 km away; book two days and expect big crowds and slow traffic in the final stretch. The pilgrimage taxi page covers sedans and Innovas for smaller families.
Into the hills: Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Katra
Amritsar is the closest big airport and rail hub for three popular hill trips.
- Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: about 200 km via Pathankot and Kangra, five to six hours. Two days is the minimum sensible plan: Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve, plus a Himachal entry permit and one night allowance. The Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsu and the cricket stadium are the usual stops. For more Himachal ideas see our Himachal taxi service page.
- Dalhousie and Khajjiar: about 190 km. Three days allows a relaxed pace, billed at 750 km.
- Katra for Mata Vaishno Devi: about 260 km through Pathankot and Jammu. A two-day return of about 520 km is billed on the actual distance, Rs 40,560 Pay Now to Reserve, plus the J&K permit. Once in Jammu, the Jammu to Katra taxi page lists smaller cars for the base-camp shuttle.
Hill roads beyond Pathankot are narrower and busier with trucks. Our chauffeurs do not drive the upper stretches after dark, and in December to February snow can affect the higher parts of Dalhousie and McLeod Ganj.
Dalhousie and Khajjiar: notes for the van
Dalhousie is Amritsar's favourite summer escape, and a three-day trip gives time for Khajjiar's meadow, Kalatop forest and St John's Church without rushing. The drive runs through Pathankot, then climbs via Banikhet; the last stretches into Dalhousie town are narrow, with limited parking near Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, so the chauffeur often drops the group and waits lower down. Khajjiar, about 22 km beyond, has a single road in and out and fills on weekends; go early. In winter, from late December, snow can close the Khajjiar road and parts of the upper town. A 12 or 17-seater is the practical choice; the 26-seater struggles here.
The Wagah evening: what to carry and what to leave
For the Beating Retreat at Attari, carry only essentials. Bags, large cameras and food are generally not allowed into the stands, so leave them locked in the van at the parking area. Photo ID for every adult is sensible, as security checks are thorough. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk from the parking to the stands, bring water for the wait in summer, and a warm layer from November to February, when the ceremony ends after dark and the open stands turn chilly. Children love it, but keep them close in the crowd at the exit.
Sangats arriving by train
Large sangats from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar and elsewhere often arrive at Amritsar Junction on long-distance trains, sometimes at odd hours and sometimes late. Share the train number and coach positions, and the chauffeurs will wait at the exit nearest your coaches; for groups of forty or more we station two or three vans together. Many sangats stay in the gurdwara sarais close to the Darbar Sahib, which vehicles cannot reach directly, so we drop at the nearest permitted point and help with bags to the sarai gate.
Two days in Amritsar: a family plan
For a family of ten or twelve arriving by air, this is a comfortable pace that the chauffeur can adapt on the day.
Day one. Airport pickup and hotel check-in, then an afternoon at Gobindgarh Fort and the Durgiana Temple, with dinner near Lawrence Road for kulchas and lassi. In the evening, return to the Harmandir Sahib to see it lit up over the water. Billed as an airport transfer plus a 4 hr / 40 km slot, Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve and Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve before GST.
Day two. An early visit to the temple and langar, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum by late morning, lunch, and departure for Attari at about 2:30 pm in summer or earlier in winter for the Beating Retreat. Back in the city by 8 pm. This is the 8 hr / 80 km day at Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve; any overrun is billed at the hourly rate.
The two days together come to under Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve for the whole group before GST and parking, a little over Rs 3,000 a head with a private chauffeur throughout.
Festivals, weddings and peak dates
Amritsar is busiest around Guru Nanak Jayanti in November, Bandi Chhor Divas with Diwali, when the Golden Temple is lit and fireworks reflect in the sarovar, and Baisakhi on 13 or 14 April. On these days roads to the walled city are controlled and drop points move further out. Winter, from November to February, is also the peak season for Punjabi and NRI weddings, and Travellers are booked weeks ahead to shuttle baraat guests between hotels and marriage palaces on the GT Road and Majitha Road. The Amritsar district administration posts traffic advisories for major gurpurabs.
Amritsar traffic and parking realities
Amritsar's traffic is concentrated in a small area. The roads ringing the walled city, from Hall Gate round to the bus stand, are slowest in the late morning and again from 5 to 9 pm, and on gurpurabs they are closed to vehicles for long stretches. Lawrence Road and Ranjit Avenue jam in the evening with diners. The multi-level parking near the temple fills fast on weekends; our chauffeurs know the alternatives. On the GT Road towards Jalandhar, truck traffic is heavy at night, which is another reason we prefer daylight starts for long drives. Parking at the temple, at Attari and at hill-station lots is charged at the posted rates and billed at actual cost.
What the Amritsar fare includes
The quoted fare covers the van, the chauffeur, fuel for the package or billed distance, and air-conditioning throughout. It does not cover GST at 5%, tolls, state entry levies, parking, monument or museum tickets, or the overnight allowance on multi-day trips; each of those is shown separately, at cost, on your invoice. Nothing else is added after you pay.
Luggage for NRI arrivals and wedding trunks
Families arriving on international flights into ATQ often carry two large cases each, plus gifts. A 12-seat Traveller's boot takes about eight to ten medium cases, and more go on the covered roof carrier; for a family of ten with twenty big suitcases, book the 12-seater plus an Innova for bags, or a 17-seater with only the family inside. Wedding trunks of clothes and shagun gifts should travel in a separate vehicle on the arrival day so nothing is crushed. Tell the desk about wheelchairs, prams or musical instruments when you book, so the right van and enough space are kept aside for them. A folded wheelchair rides in the boot, and the chauffeur helps with boarding at every stop on the way, including the long walks at Attari and the temple plaza.
Seat choices and comparable options
- 9 to 12 people: 12-seat Traveller, or the 10 or 13-seat Force Urbania for a smoother ride on the long hill days.
- 13 to 20 people: 17 or 20-seat Traveller; for airport runs with heavy luggage choose one size up.
- 21 to 26 people: 26-seat Traveller; above that, a mini bus from Rs 38,640 Pay Now to Reserve for a local day.
- Up to six people: an Innova on our Amritsar taxi service is far cheaper.
Groups arriving from Chandigarh can start with our Chandigarh Tempo Traveller team, and families flying out from Delhi can compare a car on the Delhi to Amritsar taxi route.
Booking and cancellation terms
Choose the date, trip and seat count on the booking page, see the fixed fare, and pay by card or UPI; gurdwara committees, schools and companies can ask for a GST invoice. The chauffeur's name and van number arrive the evening before, and you can call us or WhatsApp the desk for changes. Every vehicle is within four model years, air-conditioned and cleaned before each duty.
A cancellation made more than 72 hours ahead is free. Inside that window we keep 10% of the fare, rising to 50% within 48 hours of pickup and 100% within 24 hours or if the group does not appear. The cancellation policy page explains date changes. For airport-only needs, our Amritsar airport taxi page lists car fares.
