The Delhi to Amritsar taxi ride follows one of the oldest roads in Asia. The Grand Trunk Road, now NH-44, carries you out through Sonipat and Panipat, across the wheat and paddy plains of Haryana, over the Sutlej and the Beas, and into the city of the Golden Temple. It is a full day in the car, so comfort, a sensible start time and a driver who knows where to stop matter more than they do on a short hop. RutzIndia.com books you a private sedan, SUV or Tempo Traveller with a professional chauffeur, a fare fixed on the kilometres, and a car within four model years.
How much is a Delhi to Amritsar taxi in 2026?
A Delhi to Amritsar one way taxi costs Rs 16,200 Pay Now to Reserve by compact sedan (about 450 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 25,650 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova Crysta at Rs 57.6/km. A two-day round trip is billed on 900 km, Rs 32,400 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. All fares are before 5% GST, with tolls, state permits and parking at actual.
Round trips are billed on the greater of the kilometres you actually drive or 250 km for each calendar day the car stays with you. For Amritsar the distance usually wins: out and back is about 900 km, so a two-day or three-day trip is billed on 900 km, while a leisurely four-day trip crosses the 1,000 km daily minimum.
| Car class | One way (450 km) | 2 or 3 day return (900 km) | 4 day return (1,000 km billed) |

Add a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 for every night on a round trip. There are several toll plazas between Delhi and Amritsar, and a Delhi-registered commercial car pays state taxes on entering Haryana and Punjab unless it holds a permit that already covers them; all of these appear on your final bill at the receipt amount. Use the fare calculator for any variation, such as a drop in Jalandhar or Ludhiana on the way.

The GT Road, stretch by stretch
The standard route is NH-44 end to end. Your driver may use completed sections of the new Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway where they genuinely save time, but for most of the journey the GT Road remains the reliable choice.
- Delhi to Panipat (about 90 km). Out through the Singhu border and Sonipat. Leave before 6 am and you are clear of the city before the morning truck queues. The famous Murthal dhabas, known for stuffed parathas with white butter, sit on this stretch and make the obvious breakfast stop.
- Panipat to Ambala (about 110 km). Wide, fast highway past Karnal and Kurukshetra, with Pipli as a convenient tea break. Kurukshetra's Brahma Sarovar is a short detour if you want it.
- Ambala to Ludhiana (about 110 km). Into Punjab at Shambhu, past Rajpura, Sirhind and Khanna. Fatehgarh Sahib gurdwara lies just off the road near Sirhind for those who wish to pay respects.
- Ludhiana to Amritsar (about 140 km). Through Phagwara and Jalandhar, across the Beas river, and into Amritsar. The Radha Soami Satsang at Beas is beside this section.
Plan on roughly eight hours with two stops. If you are coming from an early morning flight into Delhi, consider breaking the trip at Chandigarh; our Delhi to Chandigarh taxi page covers that first leg.
Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah: making the most of arrival
Most people drive to Amritsar for one reason, and it deserves proper time.
Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple)
The shrine is open to everyone, of every faith, and is built with a door on each side as a sign of that welcome; the SGPC's page on Sri Harmandir Sahib explains its history and architecture. Visitors cover their heads (scarves are available at the entrance), remove shoes at the free jora ghar, and wash their feet before entering the parikrama around the sarovar. The complex is busy at all hours; very early morning, when the Palki Sahib procession brings the Guru Granth Sahib to the sanctum, and late at night are the calmest and most moving times. Share a meal at the langar, where volunteers serve free food to thousands every day.
Cars cannot drive to the temple entrance. The heritage street leading to it is pedestrianised, so your chauffeur drops you at the designated parking area and you walk the last few minutes.
Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and the old city
Jallianwala Bagh is a short walk from the Golden Temple, and the Partition Museum in the Town Hall is close by. Durgiana Temple and Gobindgarh Fort are a quick drive away. The district administration lists these and others on its Amritsar tourist places page.
The Attari-Wagah border ceremony
The flag-lowering Wagah border ceremony happens every evening before sunset at the Attari border, about 30 km west of the city. Timings move with the seasons, and the seating fills well before the start, so leave Amritsar at least two hours ahead and carry a photo ID. Bags are restricted, so leave them in the car. A round trip from your hotel fits comfortably into a local Amritsar taxi booking if you are staying on.

Who books this route, and which car suits them
- Pilgrim families with elders usually choose an Innova Crysta for its legroom and boot space on an eight-hour day.
- Wedding and sangat groups heading to Punjab travel together in a Tempo Traveller in Amritsar or from Delhi, or in an Urbania for a smoother ride.
- NRIs landing in Delhi and going home to villages in the Doaba belt around Jalandhar, Phagwara and Hoshiarpur often book a one-way cab straight from the airport; see our NRI car hire in India page for longer stays.
- Business travellers heading to Ludhiana or Jalandhar and on to Amritsar often prefer a Honda City or an E-Class and ask for a GST invoice in the company's name.
- Onward travellers continuing to Jammu, Katra or Kashmir can extend the booking; Pathankot is on the way, and our Jammu to Katra taxi and Kashmir taxi service pages cover the next legs.
A sample three-day Amritsar round trip
Plenty of families want the drive, the darshan and the border ceremony without feeling rushed. This outline keeps the kilometres at about 900, so the sedan fare stays at Rs 32,400 Pay Now to Reserve before GST, plus two driver night allowances.
- Day one: leave Delhi at 5.30 am, breakfast at Murthal, lunch near Ludhiana, check in near the Golden Temple by mid-afternoon, and walk to the temple for the evening and the night-time Palki Sahib.
- Day two: an early visit to the sarovar before the crowds, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum in the morning, a rest after lunch, then the drive to Attari for the retreat ceremony and back to the city for dinner on Lawrence Road.
- Day three: Durgiana Temple or Gobindgarh Fort after breakfast, then the return along NH-44, reaching Delhi in the evening.
The car stays with you throughout, so shopping for phulkari and papad in the old bazaars, or a detour to relatives in Tarn Taran or Jalandhar, fits in without extra bookings. Any added kilometres beyond the 900 are billed at the same per-km rate.

Delhi to Amritsar distance, time and toll plazas
NH-44 is tolled along most of its length between Delhi and Amritsar, with well-known plazas such as Shambhu on the Haryana-Punjab border and Ladhowal near Ludhiana. We do not quote amounts, which the operators revise, but every receipt is passed on at face value. The NHAI website publishes current national highway toll information.
| Section of NH-44 | Distance (about) | Typical driving time | Tolled? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi (Singhu border) to Panipat via Sonipat | 90 km | 1 hr 45 min | Yes |

Taxi, train, flight, bus or self-drive to Amritsar?
Amritsar is well connected: fast day trains run from New Delhi, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport has flights from Delhi, and overnight Volvo buses ply the GT Road. Here is how the options compare for a typical family.
| Option | Door to door? | Luggage and elders | Freedom to stop | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi with a chauffeur | Yes, home to hotel | Easiest; boot and roof carrier available on SUVs | Murthal, Kurukshetra, Beas or relatives en route | Rs 16,200 Pay Now to Reserve sedan or Rs 25,650 Pay Now to Reserve Innova for the whole car |
| Day train from New Delhi | No, station at both ends | Manageable with porters | None | A ticket per person |
| Flight to Amritsar | No, airport transfers both ends | Baggage limits apply | None | A ticket per person plus two transfers |
| Overnight bus | No, bus stands | Hold luggage only | Fixed halts | A seat per person |
| Self-drive rental | Yes | You load and drive | Complete | Rental, fuel, tolls and about 900 km of your own driving |
The taxi wins for NRIs with large suitcases going to a village address, for families with elders, and for anyone who wants Wagah, Tarn Taran or a Beas stop included without extra bookings. The train or flight wins for a solo traveller in a hurry.

Amritsar sightseeing add-ons
| Add-on | Distance from the city (about) | Time needed | How it is charged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attari-Wagah retreat ceremony | 30 km each way | 4 hours including early seating | About 60 km extra, roughly Rs 2,160 by sedan |
| Tarn Taran Sahib | 25 km each way | 2-3 hours | Extra km at your car's rate |
| Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum | Walking distance from the Golden Temple | 3 hours | No extra kilometres |
| Gobindgarh Fort and Durgiana Temple | Inside the city | 2-3 hours | Local kilometres only |
The history of Jallianwala Bagh makes it a sombre and essential stop, and the Partition Museum in the Town Hall tells the story of 1947 through personal archives; check its website for opening days. Families who continue to Chandigarh or Himachal afterwards can book a Chandigarh taxi or our Himachal taxi service. For a big group from the capital, a Tempo Traveller from Delhi is often cheaper per head than two cars, and an Innova Crysta on rent suits six travellers with luggage. Gurdwara circuits across Punjab are covered by our pilgrimage taxi page, and if you land at Delhi airport the same car can take you straight north.
Weather, fog and festival dates
Punjab's winter fog is the single biggest factor on this route. From late December to late January, visibility on the GT Road can drop to a few metres in the early morning and after dark; our drivers slow right down and, if fog is severe, will recommend starting later rather than pushing through. Summer (May and June) is very hot on the plains, so an early start and an air-conditioned car make a real difference. The pleasant months are October, November, February and March.
Amritsar fills up around Gurpurab (Guru Nanak Jayanti in November), Baisakhi in mid-April, and Bandi Chhor Divas, when the Golden Temple is lit up for Diwali. Hotels near the temple sell out and the city centre is congested, so book your cab and your room well ahead.
Pickups, drops, payment and cancellation
We collect from any address in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, from New Delhi railway station, and from both terminals at Delhi airport. For airport pickups the driver tracks your flight and waits with a name board: 60 minutes free after an international arrival, 30 minutes after a domestic one, then billed at the hourly rate on your booking. In Amritsar we drop at hotels near the Golden Temple, the Ranjit Avenue area, Amritsar Junction, Amritsar airport, or any village or home address in Punjab you give us.
Book on the booking page, pay the advance by card or UPI, and settle the balance plus tolls and permits at the end. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours, and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show, as set out in our cancellation policy. For other long-distance drives, the one way taxi and outstation cabs pages explain how we price them.
