For most pilgrims, the Jammu to Katra taxi is the short, final road before the climb to Mata Vaishno Devi. You land at Jammu airport or step off a train at Jammu Tawi, tired and carrying luggage, and what you want is a clean car, a calm driver and a drop at the right place in Katra so you can register and start the yatra. RutzIndia.com arranges exactly that: a Jammu to Katra one way taxi at a fixed per-km fare, pickups timed to your flight or train, and cars no older than four model years.
How much is a Jammu to Katra taxi in 2026?
A Jammu to Katra one way taxi costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta; at about 50 km the minimum fare applies. A same-day return is billed on the 250 km daily minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. Fares are before 5% GST; tolls and parking are charged at actual.
Because Jammu and Katra are so close, the one-way fare is the natural choice for most pilgrims: you go up, do the yatra at your own pace, and book the return separately when you know your timing. If you want the same car to wait for you, or to take you on to other shrines, the round-trip rules apply: billing is on the greater of actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day, plus a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night.

All fares exclude 5% GST. Any toll, parking fee or entry charge on the way is passed on at actual. The fare page explains how per-km and package pricing work if you are planning a longer circuit.

The road from Jammu to Katra
The drive is short but not flat. From Jammu the route runs north past Nagrota, where the Kunjwani bypass lets traffic from the airport and the Pathankot side skip the city centre. Roughly 35 km out, at Domel, the highway to Udhampur and Srinagar continues straight while the Katra road turns off towards the Trikuta hills. The last stretch climbs and winds, and the Shrine Board itself notes that some passengers feel queasy on it, so if anyone in your family is prone to motion sickness, ask for a front seat, keep a window open a crack and avoid a heavy meal just before leaving.
The Shrine Board's own guide to reaching Katra puts a taxi at about 70 to 80 minutes for the 50 km, and notes that security personnel stop vehicles for checks along the way. Keep identity cards handy for every adult. In fog, heavy rain or on festival mornings, allow up to two hours.
Yatra registration: why the drop point matters
Every pilgrim must register before starting the trek to the Bhawan, and the process is free. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board is the only body authorised to issue the RFID Yatra Access Card, and the details below come from its yatra registration page.
- Where to register. The main Yatra Registration Counter (YRC) is near the bus stand in Katra. A second counter, YRC-II, is about a kilometre away on the Udhampur road near the second bus stand, where coaches and larger vehicles park. Online registration is also available on the Board's website.
- Each person needs their own card. Every yatri is photographed and issued an individual RFID card.
- The six-hour window. You must cross the first checkpoint at Banganga, about 1.5 km from the YRC, within six hours of receiving the card, or it is confiscated and you must register again. So do not collect your cards the night before if you plan to rest until morning.
- Peak days. The Board limits daily numbers to what the mountain can safely handle, roughly 30,000 to 35,000 pilgrims. On the busiest days yatris may be issued waiting slips and asked to stay in Katra until their turn.
Tell us where you are staying and whether you have registered online. Your driver can drop you at the YRC first, then at your hotel with the luggage, so the family is not dragging bags around the bus stand. Groups in a Tempo Traveller or Urbania are usually better dropped near YRC-II, where large vehicles are expected.

The trek, the Bhawan and aarti times
From Katra the Bhawan is about 13 km on foot. The Shrine Board lists the main points as Banganga at about 1 km, Charan Paduka at 2.5 km, Adhkuwari at 6 km, Sanjichhat at 9.5 km and the Bhawan at 13 km, with Bhairon Ghati another 1.5 km beyond. A newer alternative track begins just below Adhkuwari; it is about 500 metres shorter, gentler, and closed to ponies, and battery vehicles run on it for elderly, sick or disabled pilgrims, subject to availability.
The Board also explains that the aarti at the Bhawan is performed twice a day, just before sunrise and just after sunset, and takes nearly two hours, during which darshan is suspended. If you are trying to time darshan, avoid arriving at the Bhawan just as the aarti begins. Most families start from Katra early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the midday heat in summer; winter nights near the Bhawan are cold, so pack warm layers even if Jammu feels mild.
Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available at approved rates on the old track, and a helicopter service operates between Katra and Sanjichhat, booked through the Board. None of these are part of our taxi service; our job ends and restarts at the base.
Pickups in Jammu and drops in Katra
We pick up from:
- Jammu airport, with flight tracking and a name board. Waiting is free for 30 minutes after domestic arrivals, which is what almost every Jammu flight is; beyond that it is billed at the hourly rate on your booking.
- Jammu Tawi railway station, at the main exit, timed to your train rather than its scheduled time.
- Hotels and homes on Residency Road, Gandhi Nagar, Raghunath Bazaar, Bahu Plaza, the Trikuta Nagar area, and anywhere else in the city.
In Katra we drop at the YRC or YRC-II, at hotels on the main bazaar and the Banganga road, at the Shrine Board's accommodation, at the helipad, or at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station if you are leaving by train. Pilgrims arriving by train directly into Katra often still use us for the return to Jammu airport. Book on the booking page and pay the advance by card or UPI.

Jammu to Katra distance, time and road checkpoints
The Shrine Board's guidance and our own trip planning give the following picture. Times are typical for a car; buses are slower on the hill section. Any toll or entry charge on the way is billed at actual.
| Section | Distance (about) | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jammu airport or Jammu Tawi station to the Kunjwani bypass | 8-10 km | 15-20 min | City traffic; the bypass skips the centre |
| Kunjwani to Domel via Nagrota | 25 km | 30-35 min | Security checks are common on this stretch |
| Domel to Katra | 15 km | 20-30 min | Winding climb into the Trikuta foothills |
| Katra bus stand (YRC) to Banganga checkpoint | 1.5 km | On foot or by auto | Cross within six hours of card issue |
| Katra to the Bhawan | 13 km | Trek; the car waits in Katra | Alternative track about 500 m shorter |
The Board's distance, altitude and temperature table also lists winter and summer temperatures at each point on the trek, which is useful for deciding how many warm layers to pack in the car.
Taxi, bus, shared taxi, train or self-drive?
According to the Shrine Board, ordinary and luxury buses leave Jammu for Katra every 10 to 15 minutes and take about two hours, shared taxis sell seats individually, and trains run from Jammu through Udhampur to Katra. Here is how those options compare with a private car.
| Option | Pickup | With elders and bags | Time on the road | What you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi from RutzIndia.com | Airport gate, station exit or hotel | Easy, one car for the family | 70-90 min | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve sedan or Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve Innova for the whole car, minimum fare applies |
| Bus from the Jammu bus stand | Bus stand, about 1 km from the station | Hard with luggage on the climb | About 2 hrs | A seat per person |
| Shared taxi | Station or airport rank | You wait for other passengers | 70-90 min plus waiting | A seat per person |
| Train to Katra | Jammu Tawi station | Platforms and stairs | Varies by train | A ticket per person |
| Self-drive rental | Wherever you rent | You drive the hill section | 70-90 min | Rental, fuel and parking in busy Katra |
Katra now has its own railway station, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station, so travellers on trains that terminate there need no taxi on the way up. Our cars are most useful for flights into Jammu airport, for trains that end at Jammu Tawi, and for the return to the airport after the yatra.
Pickup variants in Jammu and Pathankot

Sightseeing add-ons from Katra and Jammu

If your family is heading on to Himachal after the yatra, our Himachal taxi service plans the onward drive, and groups coming up from the capital can book a Tempo Traveller from Delhi for the whole journey. Pilgrims who begin with the Golden Temple can arrange a local Amritsar taxi before driving north, and those planning a longer Himalayan pilgrimage next year may want to read about our Char Dham yatra by car. Our outstation cabs page explains multi-day billing in detail.
Coming from Delhi, Amritsar or Pathankot
Many families drive all the way. From Punjab, the route runs through Pathankot to the Lakhanpur entry point into Jammu and Kashmir; an out-of-state commercial vehicle pays the applicable entry tax there, which we bill at actual. If you are combining the Golden Temple and Vaishno Devi, book our Delhi to Amritsar taxi and extend it through Pathankot to Katra, then back. For a wider circuit including Patnitop, Srinagar or Gulmarg, see our Kashmir taxi service, and for multi-shrine journeys across the north, the pilgrimage taxi page.
Side trips from Katra by car
Keep the car for a day and use the 8 hour / 80 km local package, or book a separate outing:
- Baba Dhansar and the Jhajjar Kotli stream, both close to the Jammu-Katra road and pleasant picnic stops.
- Shiv Khori cave shrine in Reasi district, a long day's round trip on hill roads; the final approach is on foot.
- Patnitop, the pine-covered ridge on the Srinagar highway, for families who want a cool afternoon after the yatra.
- Jammu city sights on the way back: Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort and the Mubarak Mandi palace complex. The Reasi district administration's official website lists places of interest around Katra.
Seasons, Navratri and the practical small print
Katra is busiest during the two Navratris (Chaitra in March or April and Sharad in September or October), in the summer school holidays of May and June, and over the New Year, when waiting slips are common. The monsoon from July to September brings landslide delays on hill roads, and winter from December to February is cold with occasional snow at the Bhawan and Bhairon Ghati. The quietest and most comfortable months are usually February to March and October to November outside Navratri.
The fare covers the car, fuel, driver and a vehicle within four model years; it excludes GST, tolls, parking and entry taxes, which are at actual. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours, and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show, as set out in our cancellation policy. Corporate groups travelling for a company yatra can ask for a GST invoice. For big families, an Innova Crysta on rent is the most comfortable way to keep everyone and their bags together.
