Almost every journey to Amritsar has the Golden Temple at its heart, and almost every visitor wants to see the flag-lowering at Attari-Wagah the same afternoon. Between those two fixed points sit airport arrivals at odd hours, family visits to villages in Majha, and long drives onward to Jammu, Katra or the Himachal hills. A pre-booked taxi service in Amritsar keeps all of that on schedule. RutzIndia.com books chauffeur-driven cars across the city and beyond at fares you can see before you pay, with drivers who know where cars are and are not allowed around the Harmandir Sahib.
Our Amritsar customers are a mix of pilgrims, domestic tourists and a large number of NRI families from the UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf, often landing with heavy luggage and elderly parents. The fares, distances and practical notes below are written for all of them.

Airport and railway station pickups
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is at Raja Sansi, north-west of the city on the Ajnala road, roughly 11 to 13 km from the Golden Temple. It handles domestic flights and international services, including connections from the UK, Canada, the Gulf and South-East Asia via various hubs. The driver monitors your flight, meets you with a name board at arrivals, and waits without charge for 60 minutes after an international landing or 30 minutes after a domestic one. Longer waits are charged at the hourly rate, but flight delays themselves cost you nothing because the driver works to the actual landing time.
Amritsar Junction, the main railway station, is barely 2 km from the temple complex and is the terminus for the Shatabdi and many long-distance trains from Delhi. Pickups use the station forecourt; the driver will guide you by phone to the car.
| Where you are going | Distance from ATQ | Car | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Temple parking (heritage street) | about 12 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Amritsar Junction railway station | about 11 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ranjit Avenue / Lawrence Road hotels | about 10 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| GT Road / Putlighar | about 13 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tarn Taran Sahib | about 35 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Attari-Wagah border | about 40 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jalandhar (outstation) | about 90 km | Sedan / Innova | Rs 3,630 / Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) |
Families arriving with several large bags should choose an Innova Crysta or, for bigger parties, a tempo traveller in Amritsar. Transfer-only bookings are explained on the Amritsar airport taxi page.
Visiting the Golden Temple by car: what to know
The approach to Sri Harmandir Sahib is a pedestrian heritage street, so cars cannot drive to the entrance. Drivers drop you at the multi-level parking near the heritage street or at a nearby drop point and wait there. From the parking it is a short walk past the Partition Museum at the Town Hall and Jallianwala Bagh to the temple gates.
- Timing. The temple is open around the clock. Early morning, when the Palki Sahib procession brings the Guru Granth Sahib from the Akal Takht, and late night are the calmest times.
- Dress and etiquette. Cover your head, remove shoes at the deposit counters, and wash your feet before entering the parikrama. The SGPC publishes guidance for visitors and details of the langar and sarais.
- Luggage. There is no need to carry bags inside; leave them locked in the car while the driver waits.
- Langar. The community kitchen serves free meals to all visitors, day and night.

An Amritsar day plan: temple, heritage and the border
This is the itinerary most of our Amritsar customers follow on their first day, and it fits into an 8 hour / 80 km package at Rs 6,630 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
- 6:00 am, Golden Temple. Morning prayers and the calm of the sarovar before crowds build.
- 8:30 am, Breakfast. Kulcha with chole at one of the famous old-city dhabas.
- 9:30 am, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum. Both are steps from the temple.
- 11:30 am, Gobindgarh Fort or Durgiana Temple. Gobindgarh has a museum and evening shows; Durgiana's architecture echoes the Golden Temple.
- 1:00 pm, Lunch and rest. Back at the hotel through the hottest part of the day.
- 2:30 pm, Leave for Attari-Wagah. About 30 km. Arrive early; seats in the gallery fill up, and security checks take time.
- Around sunset, the Beating Retreat ceremony. The time moves through the year, earlier in winter and later in summer. Phones are allowed but bags are not; leave them in the car.
- 7:30 pm, Return to the temple to see it lit up at night, then drop at the hotel.
If you are short on time, a 4 hour / 40 km package at Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve covers the temple and the heritage street; the Wagah trip alone needs more than 40 km, so it belongs in the full-day package.
Outstation cabs from Amritsar
Amritsar is the starting point for pilgrim circuits and hill escapes. The fare is the kilometres covered times the per-km rate: one-way drops use the one-way distance, round trips use the higher of the real distance or 250 km for every calendar day. For the capital, our Delhi to Amritsar taxi page has full details in both directions.
| Destination | One-way distance | Drive time | Dzire one way | Innova one way |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goindwal Sahib (minimum fare applies) | 45 km | 1 hr | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Dera Baba Nanak (Kartarpur corridor) (minimum fare applies) | 50 km | 1.25 hrs | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jalandhar (minimum fare applies) | 90 km | 1.75 hrs | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Dalhousie | 200 km | 5 hrs | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,400 Pay Now to Reserve |

| Jammu | 215 km | 4.5 hrs | Rs 7,740 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Chandigarh | 230 km | 4.5 hrs | Rs 8,280 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 13,110 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Katra (Vaishno Devi base) | 265 km | 6 hrs | Rs 9,540 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,110 Pay Now to Reserve |

Worked example: Amritsar to Katra and back over two days. The round trip is about 530 km, more than the 500 km two-day minimum, so it is billed at 530 km: Rs 19,080 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 30,210 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, plus one night of driver allowance and the Jammu and Kashmir entry fee at actual cost. If you are flying or taking the train to Jammu instead, the short Jammu to Katra taxi transfer is a better fit, and the wider Kashmir taxi service page covers Srinagar and Gulmarg.
Worked example: Dharamshala and Dalhousie loop, three days. A circuit of roughly 650 km over three days is billed on 750 km (3 x 250): Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova. The Himachal taxi service page explains hill driving and snow-season closures.
Kartarpur corridor. The crossing at Dera Baba Nanak requires advance online registration with the Government of India and a valid passport; the driver takes you to the terminal and waits on the Indian side.
Heading east. Chandigarh is four and a half hours away; our taxi service in Chandigarh continues the journey into the Tricity or up to Shimla and Manali. Pilgrims visiting several gurdwaras and temples should read the pilgrimage taxi guide.

NRI visits, weddings and festival dates
Punjab's diaspora keeps Amritsar busy all year, but some weeks are much busier than others:
- Winter wedding season (November to February). NRI families fly in for weddings in Amritsar and surrounding villages; we supply cars for guests and luxury cars for the couple, see wedding car rental. Returning families planning a month of travel should look at NRI car hire in India for a car and driver on a monthly basis.
- Gurpurab and Bandi Chhor Divas. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Prakash Purab in November and Diwali, when the Golden Temple is illuminated, bring enormous crowds and traffic diversions around the old city.
- Baisakhi (13-14 April). Harvest festival and the founding of the Khalsa; heavy pilgrim traffic in Amritsar and at Talwandi Sabo.
- Hola Mohalla (March). Many Amritsar families drive to Anandpur Sahib; book multi-day cars early.
- Lohri (13 January). Evening celebrations, and heavy dense fog across Punjab from late December to January. Our drivers slow down and hold at dhabas if visibility becomes dangerous; please plan early flights with extra margin.
- Summer (May and June). Hot afternoons; do the temple early, rest after lunch, and head to Wagah in the late afternoon.
Amritsar outstation taxi rate per km (2026)
Fares updated September 2026. Trips beyond the city are billed per kilometre, by car. These rates hold through Gurpurab, Baisakhi and the winter wedding months; there is no festival loading. The last three columns show one-way fares for the drive north to Pathankot, to the Dalhousie hills and all the way to Srinagar.
| Amritsar vehicle | Seats | Per km | Pathankot (110 km) | Dalhousie (200 km) | Srinagar (470 km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortuner (hill roads) | 6 | Rs 84 | Rs 11,370 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 16,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,480 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Dzire-class sedan | 4 | Rs 36 | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 16,920 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Traveller 12-17 seat | 16 | Rs 78 | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 15,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,660 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta | 6 | Rs 57.6 | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 11,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 26,790 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga / Carens | 6 | Rs 42 | Rs 4,620 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,740 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Urbania | 17 | Rs 102 | Rs 13,650 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 20,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 47,940 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Honda City | 4 | Rs 48 | Rs 5,460 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 9,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 22,560 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Luxury SUV | 5 | Rs 230 | Rs 28,830 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 45,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,05,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
A quick reminder of how the maths works: the one-way figure is distance times rate, never below the minimum fare; a return trip is billed on the real kilometres or on 250 km for each calendar day, whichever is higher. A five-day Srinagar and Gulmarg holiday of about 1,200 km in an Innova is compared with the 1,250 km floor for five days and billed at the higher, 1,250 x Rs 57.6 = Rs 71,250 Pay Now to Reserve, plus four nights of driver allowance and the Jammu and Kashmir entry fee at actual cost.
Amritsar local packages: 4, 8 and 12 hours
The 12 hour / 120 km slab was added for the long family days common in Amritsar: an NRI family landing at dawn, visiting the Golden Temple, driving out to an ancestral village near Ajnala or Majitha for lunch with relatives, and still catching the Wagah ceremony. We work its price out as one and a half times the 8 hour Amritsar fare plus 40 km at the car's per-km rate, rounded to Rs 30.
| Amritsar slab | 4 hr, 40 km (temple visit) | 12 hr, 120 km (long family day) | 8 hr, 80 km (temple + Wagah) | Per extra km |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carens / Ertiga | Rs 4,980 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,100 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,280 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42/km |
| Crysta / Hycross | Rs 6,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,680 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,580 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 57.6/km |
| Aura / Dzire | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,370 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36/km |
| Fortuner / Meridian | Rs 12,420 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 34,410 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 20,700 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 84/km |
| Tempo Traveller | Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 30,030 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78/km |
| Verna / City | Rs 5,970 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 16,830 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,930 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 48/km |
| Force Urbania | Rs 14,910 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 41,340 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 24,840 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 102/km |
GST of 5% is added to every slab. Time and kilometres are counted from your pickup to your last drop. Past the included distance, the per-km figure in the right-hand column applies; past the included time, the hourly rate shown in the booker before you pay applies. The general guide to packages is at local car rental 8 hr / 80 km. If you are staying for a month of family visits, a monthly car rental with driver usually works out simpler than daily bookings.

| Chheharta station | Wagah road hotels, Khasa | about 5-15 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
Amritsar Junction is a terminus for many trains, so passengers arrive in waves when the Shatabdi or the overnight expresses pull in. The station has two sides, the main city side and the Golden Avenue side; the driver will confirm by phone which exit to use.

A gurdwara circuit in a day
Amritsar is surrounded by historic gurdwaras connected with the Sikh Gurus. A classic one-day circuit from the city:
| Stop | Distance from Amritsar | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sri Tarn Taran Sahib | about 25 km | One of the largest sarovars; langar and parikrama |
| Sri Goindwal Sahib | about 45 km | The baoli with 84 steps associated with Guru Amar Das Ji |
| Sri Khadoor Sahib | about 40 km | Linked with Guru Angad Dev Ji |
| Baba Bakala Sahib | about 45 km | Busy on Raksha Bandhan, when a large jor mela is held |
Driving the whole loop and back usually adds up to about 160 km. That is more than a city package includes, so the most sensible booking is a same-day round trip, billed on the 250 km day minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before GST. The pilgrimage taxi page has more on dress and etiquette at gurdwaras and temples.

Amritsar after dark: food streets and the illuminated temple
Amritsar is a city that eats well and stays up late, and an evening package is the easiest way to enjoy it. A good plan starts after the Wagah ceremony, around 7 pm. The driver brings you back to the old city, where the lanes around the Golden Temple fill with families heading for the evening Rehras and the closing Sukhasan ceremony, when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in procession to the Akal Takht for the night. The reflection of the gilded sanctum in the sarovar after dark is one of the great sights of India.
For dinner, the old-city dhabas near Chowk Passian and the Town Hall serve dal makhani, sarson da saag in winter and the famous Amritsari kulcha, while Lawrence Road and Ranjit Avenue have more modern restaurants and late-opening sweet shops known for phirni and lassi. Tell the driver what you fancy and he will drop you at the nearest point cars are allowed and wait at a nearby lot. Because the old-city lanes stay busy until late, a 4 hour evening package from 6 pm to 10 pm, or an 8 hour package covering Wagah and dinner, is simpler than trying to find a ride home at 11 pm with tired children and shopping bags.
Autos, app cabs or a chauffeur in Amritsar?
Around the Golden Temple, e-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are the practical way to cover short distances, and the heritage street itself is walked. For anything longer:
| Choice | Where it fits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| E-rickshaw | Hops around the old city | Cheap and quick; not suitable for luggage |
| App-based cab | Point-to-point rides in the newer city | Fewer cars at dawn; availability dips at festival peaks |
| Local taxi stand | Quick Wagah trips | Price agreed verbally; waiting terms vary |
| Chauffeur-driven car (RutzIndia.com) | Airport runs, temple plus Wagah days, village visits, long drives | Fixed fare shown before payment; book early for Gurpurab and weddings |
For NRI families the deciding factor is usually luggage and time. With suitcases, elderly parents and a list of relatives to visit, one car and one driver for the whole day is simpler and, over several stops, often no more expensive.
