Most people who land at Amritsar have one destination in mind, and it is 13 km from the runway. Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International at Raja Sansi is a compact airport with direct flights from the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Indian metros, and it serves pilgrims, returning Punjabi families and visitors heading for the border ceremony at Attari-Wagah. An Amritsar airport taxi booked through RutzIndia.com gets you from arrivals to the Golden Temple, your hotel or your village at a fixed price agreed before you fly.

A note on Dera Baba Nanak and the Kartarpur corridor
Dera Baba Nanak, on the border near Gurdaspur, is the Indian end of the Kartarpur corridor to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. Whether pilgrims can cross depends on arrangements between the two governments, which require prior registration and have been suspended at times. Before booking the drive, check the corridor's current status with the official registration portal or local authorities. Even when crossing is not possible, the gurdwaras at Dera Baba Nanak itself are worth the journey in their own right, and the drop costs about Rs 4,180 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan under the airport rule.

Meeting your chauffeur at Raja Sansi
Amritsar's airport is small enough that the whole arrival takes minutes rather than an hour. Domestic and international passengers use the same terminal complex, with separate arrival exits. Once you have your bags, and have cleared immigration and customs if you flew in from abroad, walk out into the arrivals forecourt. Your chauffeur waits in the meeting area with a board bearing your name.
His name, contact and the car plate are sent on WhatsApp and SMS before you fly. We track the flight, so a delay simply moves his arrival. Free waiting is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, from the actual touchdown time. If you need longer, the chauffeur tells you before any charge begins; extra time is billed at the hourly rate on your booking.
Pickup at Raja Sansi, one step at a time
- Confirmation the day before: the chauffeur's name, number and car plate arrive by WhatsApp and SMS, along with a reminder of the free waiting time.
- Landing: we see the actual arrival time and the chauffeur moves to the arrivals area.
- Inside the terminal: international passengers clear immigration and customs; everyone collects bags from the belts. Amritsar's baggage hall is small, so this is usually quick unless two international flights arrive together.
- Arrivals exit: walk out into the forecourt. The chauffeur stands in the meeting area with a board bearing your name. International and domestic passengers use different exits, so he waits at the one that matches your flight.
- To the car: the parking area is a short walk. He loads the bags, confirms the destination (hotel, gurdwara sarai or village address) and sets off.
If a relative has booked the car for you, the chauffeur has your name and flight, not theirs, so look for your own name on the board.

Getting to the Golden Temple
The approach to Sri Harmandir Sahib is part of the experience, and it works differently from a normal hotel drop. The last stretch around the temple complex, the Heritage Street leading to the main entrance, is pedestrianised, so cars stop at the parking areas nearby and you walk the final few hundred metres. Your chauffeur can drop you at the closest permitted point, help with bags if your hotel is inside the walled city, and wait while you check in.
A few practical notes for first-time visitors:
- Head covering is required for everyone inside the complex, and shoes are left at the free shoe stands. Scarves are available at the entrance.
- The langar serves free meals to all visitors, round the clock.
- Early morning and late evening are the most atmospheric times, and the least crowded outside festival days.
- Hotels inside the old city often have narrow lanes where only e-rickshaws go. If yours is one, the chauffeur will take you to the nearest point a car can reach.
For accurate information on visiting, facilities and gurpurab dates, see the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee's site at sgpc.net.
The Attari-Wagah border ceremony
The flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border draws crowds every evening. It is roughly 38 km from the airport and about 30 km from the Golden Temple along the Grand Trunk Road, so it falls inside the fixed airport fare as a drop. Many travellers who land in the afternoon go directly from the terminal to the border and on to their hotel afterwards.
Timings shift with the season and public access arrangements are decided by the border authorities and have changed at times, so check before you plan the day. If you want the chauffeur to wait during the ceremony and then continue to your hotel, book it as a 4 hours / 40 km local package instead: Rs 3,970 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan with the Amritsar factor.

One day in Amritsar straight off a morning flight
Plenty of visitors fly in for a single day, and the airport chauffeur can carry you through it on the 8 hours / 80 km package, Rs 6,620 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 11,590 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta with the Amritsar factor. A day that works well:
- Late morning: land, drop bags at the hotel or keep them in the boot, and go to the Golden Temple. Allow two hours for the parikrama, the queue into the sanctum and a meal at the langar.
- Early afternoon: walk to Jallianwala Bagh, a few minutes from the temple, and the Partition Museum at the Town Hall nearby.
- Late lunch: Amritsari kulcha or a Punjabi thali in the old-city dhabas. The chauffeur will collect you at the nearest car point.
- Late afternoon: drive out on the GT Road to the Attari-Wagah border for the evening ceremony, arriving early for security checks and seating.
- Evening: back to the city, and if you have the energy, a second visit to the Golden Temple, which is at its most beautiful lit up at night.
Kilometres for a day like this usually stay well inside the 80 km allowance. If you are flying out the same night, the car goes straight from the border or the temple to the airport with your luggage already on board, so there is no hotel to return to.
Parking at the temple and at the border is paid at actual cost, and the chauffeur keeps the receipts for your invoice.
Returning families, pilgrims and wedding guests
Amritsar's arrivals hall on a winter evening tells you who flies here: Punjabi families home from Canada, the UK, Australia and the Gulf; pilgrims from across India; and wedding parties.
- Returning NRI families often head straight to villages in Majha and Doaba. For long drops we price on actual kilometres, and for a longer stay with the same driver see NRI car hire in India.
- Pilgrim groups visiting the Golden Temple, Tarn Taran, Goindwal Sahib and Kartarpur corridor move together in a Tempo Traveller in Amritsar, with room for everyone's bags.
- Wedding guests during the November to February season can be collected flight by flight, and decorated cars for the ceremony come from wedding car rental.
Our wider pilgrimage taxi service covers multi-shrine circuits, including onward trips towards Katra and Vaishno Devi.
Prepaid booth, app cab or a booked chauffeur
Amritsar airport has a prepaid taxi booth in the arrivals area, and app cabs operate in the city and at the airport. Here is how they compare with a pre-booked car:
| Prepaid taxi booth | App cab | RutzIndia.com | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arranged before you fly | No | No | Yes |
| How the fare is fixed | Booth tariff by destination | App fare, may vary with demand | Fixed class fare for 40 km, then per km |
| Meeting | At the booth | At the app pickup point | At the arrivals exit, name board |
| Larger vehicles for families and jathas | Depends on availability | Depends on the app | Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Tempo Traveller |
| Village drops across Punjab | Possible | Varies by area | Priced on the same rule |
Each works. For a quick hop to a Ranjit Avenue hotel by daylight, the booth or an app is simple. A booked car is the calm option when the flight lands late, when elderly parents are travelling, or when the drop is a village two hours away.
Inclusions and extras
| Included in the fare | Added separately |

| 60 minutes free after international, 30 after domestic landings | Highway tolls |

Hotels, sarais and institutions on the airport run
- Near the Golden Temple: hotels around Heritage Street and the Town Hall, and the gurdwara sarais where pilgrims stay. The car stops at the nearest permitted point.
- Ranjit Avenue and Lawrence Road: the modern hotel and shopping district, the closest major hotel cluster to the airport.
- The GT Road corridor: Khalsa College and the hotels and wedding venues strung along the highway towards Jalandhar.
- Guru Nanak Dev University and the cantonment, both a short drive.
- Rural Majha and Doaba: villages around Tarn Taran, Ajnala, Batala and beyond, where NRI families often have their family homes.
For pilgrims continuing north, the Jammu to Katra taxi covers the Vaishno Devi leg, and our Kashmir taxi service the valley itself. A family with lots of luggage can book an Innova Crysta on rent for the week, or a Fortuner on rent for rural roads. For rides in any other city, use cab booking.
Weather and festival timing in Amritsar
December and January bring dense fog across Punjab, especially in the early morning. Flights can be delayed and roads slowed; our chauffeurs drive at fog speeds and we track delays so you are never charged for them. Summer (May and June) is very hot, so a midday border trip is tiring; the evening timing is kinder.
The city is busiest around Baisakhi in April, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's gurpurab in October or November, and Bandi Chhor Divas with Diwali, when the Golden Temple is illuminated and crowds are enormous. Book larger cars early for those dates, and allow extra time near the walled city.
Onward across Punjab and into the hills
From the airport the car can head straight out on the highway:
- Delhi, via the Delhi to Amritsar taxi route in reverse: about 450 km on NH-44, Rs 16,200 Pay Now to Reserve one way in a sedan from a city address. The Delhi to Chandigarh taxi covers the southern half of the same highway.
- Chandigarh, for onward travel to the hills; our taxi service in Chandigarh covers the Tricity.
- Dharamshala, Dalhousie and the Kangra valley, reached through Pathankot; see Himachal taxi service.
When the journey starts at the airport, it is priced like any other airport job: the Rs 3,640 Pay Now to Reserve transfer covers 40 km and the rest is added at the plain class rate, so a drop in Delhi (about 460 km) is about Rs 18,760 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan and Rs 30,310 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. Round trips follow the outstation cabs rules and city-to-city drops the one-way taxi fares, with tolls and interstate permits at actual cost. For rides inside the city, use our taxi service in Amritsar.
