Twelve is a very Indian number for a trip. Parents, two married siblings with their spouses, four children and a grandparent or two: it is exactly the group that fits in a 12 seater tempo traveller on rent, and exactly the group that would otherwise squeeze into two SUVs and argue about who rides with whom. RutzIndia.com books 12 seat Force Travellers with a professional driver at the standard Tempo Traveller class rate, Rs 78 per km outstation, with city packages from Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve.
12 seater tempo traveller on rent: fare and price per km
A 12 seater tempo traveller on rent costs Rs 78 per km for outstation trips, with round trips billed on at least 250 km per day. In the city, 4 hours/40 km costs Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve and 8 hours/80 km Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve, and an airport transfer up to 40 km is Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve. Fares exclude 5% GST, tolls, state taxes and parking.
Short hops never fall below the class minimum fare: the 50 km run from Jammu station to Katra for Vaishno Devi is Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve one way, because the minimum fare applies. The table below uses route distances from our fare sheet.
| Route or package | Km | 12 seater fare | Two Innova Crystas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jammu to Katra, one way (minimum fare applies) | 50 | Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 13,860 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Vrindavan, one way | 165 | Rs 12,870 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,810 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mumbai to Nashik, one way | 170 | Rs 13,260 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,380 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Pune to Shirdi, one way | 185 | Rs 14,430 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,090 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Rishikesh, one way | 240 | Rs 18,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,360 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Mumbai to Shirdi, one way | 240 | Rs 18,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,360 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Chandigarh to Manali, one way | 310 | Rs 24,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 35,340 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Bangalore to Ooty round trip, 2 days | 540 | Rs 42,120 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 61,560 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Nainital round trip, 2 days | 600 | Rs 46,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 68,400 Pay Now to Reserve |
The right-hand column is the honest comparison. Two Innova Crystas on rent at Rs 57.6 per km each cost Rs 114 per km together, nearly half as much again as one van, and you pay two night allowances instead of one. The Innovas are quicker on hill hairpins and give a little more privacy; the van keeps the whole family in one conversation.

The seat map: how twelve fit
Most 12 seater Travellers use a 2+1 layout behind the driver's cabin, with an aisle down the right-hand side of the van. A typical arrangement:
- Row one: two seats on the left, one on the right, closest to the AC outlets and the best view forward through the partition.
- Rows two and three: the same 2+1 pattern, the smoothest ride in the van because they sit between the axles.
- Row four: the rear row, sometimes a bench of three, over the rear axle. Good for teenagers, less so for anyone who gets car-sick.
Some vans have a single seat beside the driver instead of a full rear row; either way the count is twelve passengers plus the driver. Every seat reclines a few inches and has a grab handle, and the aisle means nobody climbs over anyone to get out at a tea stop.
Seat allocation tip: put elders and small children in rows one and two, keep a medicine and snack bag in the aisle seat of row two, and let the cousins fight over the back.
Luggage: what the roof carrier and boot take
A 12 seater has a modest boot behind the last row and a roof carrier with side rails and a tarpaulin. Realistically, that is room for one medium check-in suitcase per person on the roof and cabin-sized bags inside. The roof load is lifted by the driver at the start and end of the trip, so pack the day's needs in a separate small bag.
If your group is flying in with two large bags each, a 12 seater will feel tight. Take the 17 seat version, or one of our Force Urbania vans with a rear luggage compartment. For wedding trips carrying lehengas in garment bags and gift hampers, tell us at booking; we can keep a seat free for delicate items.

Pushback versus maharaja 12 seaters
The standard 12 seater has pushback seats that recline a little, fabric upholstery, individual reading lights on most vans and roof-mounted AC vents. It is the value choice and what the Rs 78 per km class rate is built around.
A maharaja or luxury 12 seater replaces those seats with wide, deeply reclining captain chairs, often in leatherette, with curtains, ambient lights and sometimes a screen. It suits senior citizens on a long pilgrimage, VIP wedding guests and families who want to sleep on an overnight return. Any supplement for a luxury interior is shown in your written quote; we also send photos of the van so what arrives is what you saw. Our main tempo traveller on rent page compares every size from 9 to 26 seats.
Trips that suit a 12 seater best
Pilgrimage weekends. Delhi to Vrindavan and Mathura for Janmashtami or Holi, Delhi to Haridwar and Rishikesh for the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri and Triveni Ghat, Mumbai or Pune to Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur, and Jammu to Katra for the Vaishno Devi walk. Our pilgrimage taxi guide covers temple timings and dress codes, and the Delhi to Rishikesh taxi page has the route in detail. Uttarakhand's official tourism portal is useful for festival dates on the Ganga.
Hill-station breaks. Nainital, Mussoorie, Shimla, Ooty and Coorg. A 12 seater is the largest van that handles most hill roads comfortably. Expect about 30 to 35 km an hour average on ghat sections, and plan to arrive before dark.
Airport family pickups. NRI families landing at Delhi's IGI Terminal 3, Mumbai or Bangalore often have relatives coming along to receive them; one van brings everyone home together. For flight information and terminal guides, Delhi Airport's official site is the reference. Our drivers track your flight, meet you with a name board, and wait 60 minutes free after international arrivals or 30 minutes after domestic arrivals.
City days with family. A wedding-shopping day in Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh, a Mumbai darshan loop to Siddhivinayak and Haji Ali, or a Bangalore day covering the palace, Lalbagh and a mall. The 8 hour / 80 km package at Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve (city factor applies) usually covers it.

A worked weekend: Delhi to Rishikesh and back
Say ten adults and two children leave Delhi on Saturday at 6 am, spend the day at Haridwar and the evening aarti in Rishikesh, stay overnight, and return on Sunday after a morning at the Laxman Jhula area and a café lunch.
- Delhi to Rishikesh and back, with a Haridwar stop: about 500 km driven.
- Two calendar days at a 250 km daily minimum: 500 km.
- Fare: 500 km at Rs 78 = Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve.
- One night allowance for the driver: Rs 1,500.
- Tolls on the Delhi-Meerut route and parking at actual cost; 5% GST on the fare.
That is under Rs 3,600 per traveller before GST and tolls for a door-to-door weekend. Kanwar Yatra in July and big bathing days at Haridwar bring diversions and heavy traffic, so we suggest avoiding those dates for a relaxed family trip.
12 seater versus the sizes either side of it
Groups of nine to fourteen have several options, and the right one is not always the 12 seater. This comparison uses our published class rates, the 250 km daily minimum on round trips and the Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve nightly driver allowance, which is the same for every class.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Per km | Minimum per round-trip day | Allowances per night | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 seater maharaja Traveller | up to 9 | Rs 78 + interior supplement in quote | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve and up | one driver | Rear bay, limited |
| 12 seater Traveller | up to 12 | Rs 78 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | one driver | Roof carrier + small boot |
| 14 seater Traveller | up to 14 | Rs 78 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | one driver | Roof carrier + small boot |
| 17 seater Traveller | up to 17 | Rs 78 + any long-body supplement in quote | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve and up | one driver | Longer roof + deeper boot |
| 13 seater Force Urbania | up to 13 | Rs 102 | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve | one driver | Rear compartment |
| Two Ertigas | up to 12 | Rs 84 combined | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve | two drivers | Two small boots |
| Two Innova Crystas | up to 12 | Rs 114 combined | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve | two drivers | Two boots + roof |
On cost alone the 12 seater Traveller wins for a group of ten to twelve. The Urbania wins on comfort, two cars win on flexibility (the group can split for different sightseeing), and the 17 seater wins when luggage is heavy.
Standard, deluxe and maharaja 12 seaters
Standard 12 seater
Fabric pushback seats in a 2+1 layout, roof-mounted AC vents running the length of the cabin, a music system and a roof carrier. This is the van most people picture, and it is priced at the plain Rs 78 per km class rate. It does the job perfectly well for weekend trips, pilgrimages and airport runs.
Deluxe 12 seater
The same body with better finishing: firmer, higher-backed seats, often leatherette covers, curtains, individual reading lights and, on many vans, charging points at each row. Wedding families and tour groups on multi-day circuits appreciate the difference by the third day. Any supplement is stated in your quote, and we send photographs of the actual van.
Maharaja 12 seater
A luxury conversion with wide captain chairs that recline almost flat, footrests on some vans, ambient lighting and frequently a television screen. It is the choice for overnight returns, elderly pilgrims and VIP wedding guests. Because the chairs are larger, some maharaja vans seat fewer than twelve; we confirm the exact count before booking.
12 seater trip costs beyond the metros
These examples start from cities other than Delhi and Mumbai, where the 12 seater is just as popular. The per-person column assumes ten travellers, a common size for this van, and excludes GST, tolls, parking, state tax and the driver's allowance.
| Journey | Days | Kilometres charged | 12 seater fare | Each of 10 pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh to Shimla and back | 1 | 250 (daily minimum) | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,950 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jammu to Katra and back | 1 | 250 (daily minimum) | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,950 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Dehradun, drop only | 1 | 250 | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,950 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Agra to Jaipur, drop only | 1 | 240 | Rs 18,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,870 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Delhi to Mathura and back | 1 | 360 | Rs 28,080 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 2,810 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Jaipur to Udaipur, drop only | 1 | 395 | Rs 30,810 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 3,080 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Chandigarh to Manali and back | 2 | 620 | Rs 48,360 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 4,840 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Bangalore to Coorg, three-day stay | 3 | 750 (daily minimum) | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 5,850 Pay Now to Reserve |
The route pages for Chandigarh to Shimla, Jammu to Katra, Agra to Jaipur and Bangalore to Coorg explain the roads, stops and timings. For a same-city day, our tempo traveller on rent page lists the local package in every city.
Worked example: three days in Coorg from Bangalore
Ten colleagues book a 12 seater for a Friday-to-Sunday Coorg break.
| Day | Plan | Approx km |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Bangalore to Madikeri via Mysore road and Kushalnagar, stop at the Bylakuppe monasteries | 270 |
| Saturday | Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat, a coffee estate walk, Dubare in the afternoon | 90 |
| Sunday | Madikeri to Bangalore with a lunch stop on the highway | 270 |
Driven: about 630 km. Minimum for three calendar days: 750 km. Billed: 750 km at Rs 78, which is Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve, plus two nights of driver allowance, tolls on the Bangalore-Mysore stretch, estate parking and GST. Swap to a Friday-evening start and the Friday still counts as a calendar day, so a Saturday dawn departure would be the thriftier plan if the group can manage it.
Airport pickups with a 12 seater: the luggage question
The 12 seater is the family airport van, but luggage decides whether it works. International travellers often arrive with two large suitcases each; twelve people with twenty-four cases will not fit. A practical guide:
- Up to 8 passengers with two large cases each: a 12 seater with the roof carrier works.
- 9 to 11 passengers with one large case each: fits, with cabin bags inside.
- 12 passengers with heavy luggage: take a 17 seater or a 13 seat Urbania, or add a small car for bags.
The driver tracks the flight, waits at the exit with a name board, and holds the van for 60 minutes free after an international landing (30 minutes after a domestic one). Our airport taxi page covers individual airports.
12 seater for weddings and family functions
For a family wedding, one 12 seater typically becomes the bride's or groom's family van for the whole event: hotel to mehendi, back for a rest, out again for the sangeet, and a long night for the wedding itself. Book full days rather than hourly packages, and agree extra hours in advance. A deluxe or maharaja 12 seater with curtains makes a good changing room between venues when a hotel is far away. Decorated cars for the couple are on our wedding car rental page, and bigger guest movements are better served by a mini bus.
Pilgrimage timings with a 12 seater
- Vaishno Devi: most groups take the train or fly to Jammu, then the van to Katra (about 50 km, Rs 10,740 Pay Now to Reserve one way as the minimum fare applies). Yatra registration can be completed online in advance or at Katra, and the van waits or returns as planned.
- Shirdi: from Pune or Mumbai, leave early enough to reach before the afternoon crowd, or stay overnight for the early-morning kakad aarti.
- Haridwar and Rishikesh: the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri draws huge crowds; the van parks in designated lots and the group walks to the ghat.
- Vrindavan: temple timings change with the season and the temple closes midday; plan the morning darshan and an afternoon rest.
For festivals and pilgrimage calendars across India, the national Incredible India portal is a useful reference.
Corporate day outings in a 12 seater
Small teams use the 12 seater for day offsites at resorts outside Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore, client visits across an industrial belt, or a team dinner that ends late. The local 8 hour / 80 km package covers most day outings; on longer days the extra hours are billed at the rate on your quote. We issue GST invoices in the company's name, and HR or admin teams can book repeat outings on a monthly account.
What a final bill looks like
Here is how the invoice for a three-day Delhi to Mussoorie trip in a 12 seater is built, so there are no surprises at the end. Figures for tolls, parking and entry tax are illustrations; on your bill they are the exact receipted amounts.
| Line | Basis | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Van fare | 750 km (three-day minimum; about 640 km driven) at Rs 78 | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Driver night allowance | 2 nights at the rate on your quote (Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve) | Rs 3,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tolls | Receipts from the highway plazas | at actual |
| Uttarakhand entry tax | Receipt, only if collected at the border | at actual |
| Parking | Mussoorie and sightseeing lots | at actual |
| GST | 5% on the van fare | Rs 2,930 |
Less the advance already paid by card or UPI, the balance is settled at the end of the trip or online. Companies receive the invoice in their registered name with GSTIN.
Inside the cabin: making a 12 seater comfortable
Air conditioning. Roof ducts run the length of the van, but the rear row always feels warmer on a hot afternoon. Keep curtains drawn on the sunny side, and ask the driver to pre-cool the van for ten minutes before a long leg.
Seating. Pushback seats recline a few inches; the middle rows ride best. Put the tallest travellers in aisle seats where they can stretch a leg.
Light and power. Reading lights sit above each seat on most vans. Charging points vary, so carry a power bank or two for the group.
Noise. Older Travellers are louder than cars at highway speeds. Earphones help anyone who wants to sleep; the driver will keep music low on request.
Cleanliness. Vans are cleaned before each trip. Carry a garbage bag, and leave food wrappers in it rather than seat pockets, especially on hot days.
Booking the same 12 seater for a week or more
Families visiting India for a wedding season or a long holiday often keep one van for a week or two. The same driver and van stay with you, the roof carrier becomes your left-luggage room, and you avoid rebooking every day. Billing follows the usual rule, actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day whichever is higher, plus the nightly allowance. If some days are pure rest days at a hotel, it can be cheaper to release the van and rebook, and we will point that out when we see your plan. For stays longer than a month, our monthly car rental with driver desk can quote a monthly arrangement.
School picnics and tuition-class outings
Coaching classes and school clubs of ten to twelve students often use a 12 seater for a science-centre visit, a trek near the city or a heritage day. A teacher should sit in the front row with the passenger list and a first-aid kit, and parents should have the driver's name and the van number the evening before. We share registration, permit and insurance details on request for the school's file, and a 4 or 8 hour city package usually covers the outing.
Hill-station route notes for 12 seater groups
Nainital from Delhi. About 300 km each way through Moradabad and Haldwani, with the climb starting after Kathgodam. The lake-front Mall Road restricts vehicles at busy times, so the van parks at the designated lots and the group walks. Two days is billed on 600 km. See the Delhi to Nainital taxi route.
Mussoorie from Delhi. Via Meerut and Dehradun, the last 35 km a steady climb. Landour and Kempty Falls make easy side trips; weekends in May and June are crowded, so leave Delhi before sunrise.
Shimla from Chandigarh or Delhi. The four-lane highway now covers much of the way to Shimla. Inside the town, the Mall and the Ridge are pedestrian areas; Kufri and Narkanda are short drives beyond. In winter, snow can close roads above Shimla for a day or two.
Ooty from Bangalore. Through Mysore and the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests, where forest check-posts have night-time restrictions on traffic; plan to cross in daylight. The final climb has many hairpins, and the 12 seater is about the ideal size for it.
On every hill route, we plan legs to finish before dark where possible, and drivers use low gears on long descents; a stop halfway down lets the brakes cool and the passengers stretch.
How fast can I get a 12 seater near me?
In Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur and Chandigarh, 12 seaters are plentiful and a same-day or next-day booking is often possible outside peak seasons. In smaller cities we source from the nearest permitted operator, and a day or two of notice helps. Around Diwali, Holi, long weekends, wedding Saturdays and the Char Dham opening weeks, book two to four weeks ahead. Put your pickup address into the booker and you will see the fare immediately; we confirm the van and driver before you pay.
Travelling well with your driver
Tipping. Tips are not included in the fare and are entirely your choice. Many families give a tip at the end of a multi-day trip if the driver has been helpful; there is no expectation on short city bookings.
Meals. On outstation days the driver takes his meals from his allowance. Families often invite him to eat with them at a dhaba, which is kind but not required.
Rest. A driver who has driven ten hours needs sleep. Avoid asking for late-night outings after a long highway day; plan them for rest days instead.
Documents for the group. Carry photo ID for everyone (hotels and some temples ask for it), your booking confirmation, and printouts or phone copies of any yatra registration or monument tickets. Foreign nationals should carry passports, as hotels must record them.
Feedback during the trip. If the AC, seats or driving are not right, tell the desk on WhatsApp straight away rather than after you return, so the problem can be fixed while you are still travelling.
Festival trips in a 12 seater
Festivals are when twelve-person family groups travel most. For Holi, Vrindavan and Barsana draw huge crowds, so arrive the day before and keep the van parked at the hotel during the celebrations. Around Janmashtami, Mathura's temple lanes close to vehicles for long stretches. Diwali road trips out of Delhi and Mumbai jam highways on the Friday evening before the holiday; leaving at dawn on Saturday is faster. During Durga Puja, Kolkata families use vans for pandal-hopping nights, best booked on 8 hour packages that begin in the evening, with the driver dropping the group near each pandal cluster and waiting at a nearby open road.
Five questions to ask before you hire any van
Whether you book with us or anyone else, these questions separate a reliable 12 seater from a headache.
- Is it a yellow-plate tourist vehicle? Only commercially registered vans may legally carry paying passengers. A white-plate van rented through a friend of a friend is cheaper until something goes wrong.
- How old is the van? We cap ours at four model years. Older vans are not automatically unsafe, but AC performance, seat padding and suspension fade with age.
- What exactly is included? Ask for tolls, parking, state tax, GST and the driver's night allowance to be listed line by line. A quote that says "all inclusive" with no breakdown usually hides a surprise at the end.
- What is the minimum billing? Our round trips carry 250 km per calendar day. Some operators use 300 km; knowing the figure lets you compare fairly.
- Who is the driver and has he driven this route? For hill and pilgrimage routes especially, route experience matters more than anything else. We share the driver's name and number the evening before.
Seasonal notes for 12 seater trips
Summer (April to June): peak for hill stations and the Char Dham opening; AC matters, so start early and rest the van in the afternoon heat on the plains. Monsoon (July to September): landslides can close hill roads in Uttarakhand and Himachal for hours; Western Ghats drives to Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar are beautiful but slow. Festive and wedding season (October to February): Diwali, Durga Puja, Christmas, New Year and Saturday weddings keep vans busy, so book three weeks ahead. Winter (December to February): fog on north Indian highways slows early mornings, and snow can close roads above Shimla and Manali.
