Nainital is where Delhi goes to breathe. The drive leaves the plains of western Uttar Pradesh, crosses into Uttarakhand, and then climbs sharply from Kathgodam through oak and pine forest to a lake ringed by seven hills. A Delhi to Nainital taxi from RutzIndia.com turns that seven-hour journey into one comfortable leg: a chauffeur who drives the Kumaon hills regularly, a car within four model years, and a fare calculated on the kilometres and shown before you pay. You can book a Delhi to Nainital one way taxi for a drop, or keep the car for the whole holiday.
How much is a Delhi to Nainital cab in 2026?
A Delhi to Nainital one way taxi costs Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan (about 300 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 17,100 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. Keep the car for two days and the return is billed on 600 km, which is Rs 21,600 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. Fares are before 5% GST; tolls, state entry taxes and parking are charged at actual.
The table below shows the common options. Round trips are billed on the higher of actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day, so the billable distance rises once you keep the car for three days or more, even if it stays parked at your hotel for part of that time.
| Car class | One way (300 km) | 2 day return (600 km) | 3 day return (750 km billed) | 4 day return (1,000 km billed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swift Dzire / Honda Amaze | Rs 10,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,600 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Honda City / Hyundai Verna | Rs 14,400 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,800 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 48,000 Pay Now to Reserve |

Each night away carries a chauffeur's night allowance of between Rs 900 and Rs 1,800 Pay Now to Reserve. The trip passes toll plazas on NH-9 and crosses two state lines, from Delhi into Uttar Pradesh and then into Uttarakhand, so any state entry tax a Delhi-registered commercial vehicle must pay, plus tolls and parking in Nainital, are shown on your invoice exactly as receipted. For side trips such as Mukteshwar or Ranikhet, our fare calculator works out the extra kilometres.

The route: NH-9 to Kathgodam, then the climb
The usual road leaves East Delhi on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway or NH-9 through Ghaziabad and Hapur, crosses the Ganga at Garhmukteshwar, and runs on through Gajraula, Moradabad and Rampur. After Rampur the route turns north towards Rudrapur and Haldwani, entering Uttarakhand on the way. Haldwani and Kathgodam, the railhead at the foot of the hills, are the last big towns; from there the road climbs through Jeolikote to Nainital in roughly an hour and a quarter of steady bends.
A good rhythm for the day:
- Leave Delhi at 5.30 or 6 am to clear Ghaziabad before office traffic.
- Breakfast around Garhmukteshwar or Gajraula.
- A short break at Rampur or Rudrapur.
- Lunch in Haldwani or a tea stop at Jeolikote before the final climb.
- Reach Nainital by early afternoon, before the evening traffic on the Mall.
Plains traffic in Moradabad and around Haldwani is the usual cause of delay, not the hills themselves. Weekend departures on Friday evening are the slowest of the week; if you can, leave on a Saturday morning or a weekday.
Hill driving: why the chauffeur matters
The last 35 km or so are a different kind of driving. Our drivers on this route know the local rules of the mountain road: vehicles climbing uphill are given way to on narrow stretches, the horn is used before blind bends, there is no overtaking on curves, and speed stays low on the descent to save brakes. If anyone in your party gets car-sick, ask to sit in front, keep a window slightly open, and eat something light before Kathgodam. In monsoon rain or winter fog the driver will slow further or wait out a heavy shower; that is caution, not delay.
Choose the car with the hills in mind too. An Innova Crysta or a Fortuner handles a fully loaded climb more comfortably than a small sedan, and a Tempo Traveller suits groups but needs more care on the tightest bends and at parking lots in town.

Arriving in Nainital: parking, the Mall and where we drop you
Nainital is compact and busy, and in peak season the town controls vehicle movement on Mall Road and around the lake, with parking at the Flats and other lots filling quickly. Timings of these restrictions change from season to season, and at the busiest times vehicles may be held at parking areas outside town, with shuttles running in. Your chauffeur will take you as close to your hotel as current rules allow and help with bags. Parking charges are passed on at actual.
We drop at hotels on Mall Road, in Mallital and Tallital, on the Ayarpatta and Sukhatal side, and at properties in Bhowali, Bhimtal and Sattal if you are staying outside town. Uttarakhand Tourism's Nainital destination page is a good introduction, and the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam's official website lists its tourist rest houses across the region.
Around Nainital with your car
If you keep the car, the lake district is easy to explore. Distances below are from the district administration's Nainital tourist places page:
- Tiffin Top and Dorothy's Seat, about 4 km from town, for views over the lake; the last stretch is a walk or a pony ride.
- Naina Peak, the highest point around town at about 2,611 metres, for a sunrise hike.
- Kilbury, about 12 km away, quiet forest and birdwatching.
- Bhowali, about 11 km, the road junction for Almora, Ranikhet and Mukteshwar, known for its fruit market.
- Bhimtal, about 22 km, and Sattal, about 23 km, for boating and quieter lakes.
- Mukteshwar, about 51 km, orchards and Himalayan views at more than 2,200 metres.
Many visitors also stop at Kainchi Dham, the ashram associated with Neem Karoli Baba, on the road from Bhowali towards Almora. It is extremely busy on weekends and during its annual June fair, when police manage traffic tightly, so go early in the morning.

| Sattal lakes | 23 km | Half a day, combine with Bhimtal | Within the daily minimum |

Bhimtal is about 22 km from Nainital and 21 km from Kathgodam, so it also works as a quieter base for the whole holiday. If you are choosing between Kumaon and Garhwal, compare our Delhi to Haridwar taxi and Delhi to Rishikesh taxi fares, or plan a pilgrimage with the Char Dham yatra by car. Families holidaying further north can look at the Himachal taxi service, and those staying in Doon Valley can book a Dehradun taxi service.
Travelling by train or plane part of the way
Not everyone wants seven hours in a car. Some travellers take an early train from Delhi to Kathgodam and book only the hill section with us, which is a short transfer of roughly 35 km billed at the same per-km rate. Others fly to Pantnagar airport and drive up from there. Both options work well for elderly parents who find long road journeys tiring. The trade-off is flexibility: with a car from your door in Delhi, you choose when to stop, you carry as much luggage as you like, and the same car can take you to Bhimtal or Mukteshwar the next day. Tell the desk which part of the journey you want covered, and we will quote the Kathgodam or Pantnagar pickup alongside the full road option so you can compare.
Seasons, snow and holiday rush
Nainital has two peak seasons: April to June, when Delhi escapes the heat, and the October to December stretch that includes Diwali, Christmas and the New Year. Summer school holidays and long weekends bring the heaviest traffic of the year. The monsoon from July to September makes the hills lush but brings landslide risk and road closures on some routes, so build a spare half day into the plan. December to February is cold, with occasional snowfall in and above town; roads can be slippery in the early morning, and drivers carry out their own checks before setting off. The quietest, clearest weeks are usually March and October.
Who books a Delhi to Nainital taxi, and which car
- Couples and small families take a sedan for a drop, or a Honda City for more boot space.
- Families with elders prefer an Innova; see our Innova Crysta on rent in Delhi page for longer holidays.
- College friends, office offsites and extended families book a Tempo Traveller from Delhi so the whole group travels together.
- Corporate travellers heading to Haldwani, Rudrapur or Pantnagar on business can ask for a GST invoice and pay by card or UPI.
If you are choosing between hill stations, compare the drive with our Delhi to Mussoorie taxi, the Delhi to Dehradun taxi and the longer Delhi to Shimla taxi.
Pickups, airport rules and cancellation
We pick up from any address in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad. Flying in first? For pickups at Delhi airport we follow the flight's actual landing time and your chauffeur holds a sign with your name in the arrivals hall. Waiting costs nothing for the first hour after an international flight or the first half hour after a domestic one; beyond that, the hourly rate shown on your booking applies. Reserve through the booking page, pay a part advance online by card or UPI, and clear tolls, state taxes and parking when the trip ends.
If your plans change, there is no charge for cancelling more than three days (72 hours) ahead. Inside 72 hours we keep 10% of the fare, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside the final 24 hours, or if nobody turns up, the full fare. Our cancellation policy sets this out in full. For local hire once you are back in the capital, see the Delhi taxi service.
