The plains end at Kalka, and that is where a Delhi to Shimla taxi earns its fare. For the first 250 km you are on one of India's busiest highways; for the last 90 you are climbing the Kalka-Shimla road through Parwanoo, Dharampur, Solan and Shoghi, with pine forest on one side and a drop to the valley on the other. RutzIndia.com sends chauffeurs who drive this stretch every season, cars within four model years with well-maintained brakes and tyres, and a fare you can calculate yourself before you book.
How much is a Delhi to Shimla taxi in 2026?
Fares updated September 2026.
A Delhi to Shimla one way taxi costs Rs 12,420 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan (345 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 19,670 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. A two-day return covers 690 km: Rs 24,840 Pay Now to Reserve sedan, Rs 39,330 Pay Now to Reserve Innova. Add 5% GST; tolls, Himachal entry tax and parking are charged at actual.
Round-trip billing is the higher of the actual return kilometres or 250 km per calendar day. Because Delhi to Shimla and back is already 690 km, a two-day weekend is billed on that distance. Stay three days and the minimum becomes 750 km; four days, 1,000 km. Local sightseeing to Kufri, Mashobra or Naldehra usually fits within those minimums, so for longer holidays the per-day floor is effectively your sightseeing allowance.

Himachal Pradesh collects an entry tax from out-of-state commercial vehicles at its border barriers, the first of which you meet at Parwanoo. That amount, the tolls on NH44 and the Kalka-Shimla highway, and parking in Shimla are charged exactly as receipted. On overnight trips the chauffeur's night allowance is Rs 1,500 per night. All fares are before 5% GST; card and UPI payments are taken through the booker, and a GST invoice carries your company details if you are travelling on business. Our full rate card is on the fares page.

The route from Delhi to Shimla, stage by stage
Delhi to Ambala and Zirakpur on NH44
The chauffeur leaves Delhi through the Singhu border or the Karnal bypass side and runs north on NH44, the Grand Trunk corridor, past Murthal, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Ambala. This is a wide, fast highway with a handful of toll plazas and plenty of food courts. Murthal's parantha dhabas are the classic breakfast stop, and the Karna Lake area at Karnal is a cleaner mid-morning break. After Ambala the car skirts Zirakpur and Chandigarh on the bypass towards Pinjore and Kalka. If you only need the Tricity, our Delhi to Chandigarh taxi covers that shorter leg.
Kalka to Shimla: the hill section
From Kalka the road enters Himachal at Parwanoo and begins the climb. The Parwanoo-Solan stretch has been widened to four lanes with long tunnels and cut slopes, which has made the lower half far quicker than it was a decade ago; beyond Solan the road narrows again through Kandaghat and Shoghi before reaching Shimla near Tara Devi. The whole hill section is roughly 90 km and typically takes two and a half to three hours, depending on trucks, weather and weekend traffic. The National Highways Authority of India publishes project and toll information for the corridor.
Hill-driving norms are non-negotiable for our chauffeurs: give way to uphill vehicles on narrow sections, sound the horn on blind curves, use engine braking on descents rather than riding the brakes, and never overtake on a bend. On the return journey they stop at least once on the way down to let brakes cool and passengers stretch.
Timing the drive
The best departure from Delhi is between 5 and 6 am. That clears the city before office traffic, gets you to Murthal for breakfast, and puts you on the hill section around midday, when visibility is best. Friday evening departures are the slowest of the week; Sunday afternoon returns from Shimla are the busiest, with queues at Shoghi and the Parwanoo barrier. If your dates are flexible, a Saturday morning start and Monday return is noticeably calmer.
The 345 km in numbers: stages, hours and plazas
| Stage | About km | Usual time | Tolls and barriers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Delhi to Karnal via Murthal and Panipat (NH44) | 125 | 2 hrs to 2 hrs 30 min | NH44 plazas near Panipat and Karnal |
| Karnal to Ambala via Kurukshetra | 75 | about 1 hr | fast six-lane highway |
| Ambala to Kalka via the Zirakpur bypass and Pinjore | 60 | about 1 hr 15 min | Dappar plaza on the Ambala-Zirakpur road |
| Kalka to Shimla via Parwanoo, Solan and Shoghi | 85 to 90 | 2 hrs 30 min to 3 hrs | Himachal entry barrier at Parwanoo; Sanwara plaza on the hill highway |
| Delhi to Shimla | about 345 | 7 to 8 hrs | tolls and entry tax at actual |
All our cars run on FASTag, so plazas rarely hold you up; the Himachal barrier takes a few minutes for paperwork, which the chauffeur handles.

Stops worth planning on the way to Shimla
- Murthal - parathas and white butter, 50 km from Delhi.
- Pinjore Gardens - the terraced Mughal garden near Kalka.
- Timber Trail, Parwanoo - a cable car ride above the valley.
- Kasauli - a detour of roughly 12 km from Dharampur or Garkhal to the old cantonment, Christ Church and Monkey Point.
- Barog and Solan - a tea break by the railway line; Barog station sits beside the longest tunnel on the toy-train route.
- Kandaghat to Chail - an optional detour to the Chail palace and cricket ground.
The Kalka-Shimla railway and your taxi
Many travellers like to combine road and rail: the chauffeur drops you at Kalka station for the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, and drives your luggage up to meet you at Shimla station. It is a slow, scenic five-to-six-hour ride with more than a hundred tunnels, and it works best on a round trip where the car is already with you. Ask the desk to time the drop to the train you have booked with Indian Railways.

Getting around Shimla with your chauffeur
Shimla has strict traffic rules in its centre. The Mall Road, The Ridge and several connecting lanes are closed to general vehicles, and others are "sealed" or "restricted" roads that need special permits. Your chauffeur will drop you at the nearest point a taxi may reach - Cart Road, the Lift, Victory Tunnel, Chhota Shimla or directly at your hotel if it has vehicle access - and pick you up there again. Parking is limited and paid; the driver handles it.
A round trip gives you a car for the classic Shimla outings:
- Kufri - about 16 km, with pony rides, the Himalayan Nature Park and, in winter, snow play.
- Mashobra and Naldehra - quiet pine forests, apple orchards and the old golf course at Naldehra.
- Chail - the former royal retreat and its high-altitude cricket ground.
- Narkanda and Hatu Peak - about 60 km beyond Shimla, the go-to snow destination between December and February.
- Jakhoo temple - a steep walk or ropeway from the Ridge; the car waits below.
Himachal Tourism's official website lists attractions, festivals and seasonal advisories across the state and is worth a look before you set out.
Snow usually reaches Kufri, Narkanda and the upper roads between late December and February. After fresh snowfall, the police may close sections or allow only four-wheel-drive vehicles or cars with chains. Our chauffeurs carry chains in winter and will not push beyond a closure point. In the July to September monsoon, landslides can block the Kalka-Shimla road; we monitor advisories and may suggest a later start.
Shimla by car, train, bus or self-drive: a quick comparison
| Option | The journey | Works well for | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Kalka, then toy train or taxi | morning trains from Delhi to Kalka, then the narrow-gauge line or a road transfer (timetables on Indian Railways) | rail lovers, couples | a very long day with the toy train; seats sell out in season |
| Overnight Volvo or state bus | coaches leave Delhi's inter-state terminals in the evening and reach Shimla early morning | budget travellers who can sleep on buses | drop at the Shimla bus terminus, a local taxi to your hotel |
| Flight | limited flights reach Shimla's small airport at Jubbarhatti; Chandigarh airport is the usual air gateway | time-pressed travellers | schedules are thin and weather-dependent, plus a road transfer |
| Self-drive | your fuel, tolls, entry tax and Shimla parking | practised hill drivers | the climb after five hours on NH44, tight parking in town |

Best months for a Shimla road trip
March to June is peak season, when families escape the Delhi heat and Shimla's hotels fill up; weekends in May and June see the heaviest traffic on the hill section. October and November bring clear skies, crisp air and some of the best mountain views of the year, with fewer crowds. December to February is snow season in the upper areas, busiest around Christmas and New Year when many Delhi families drive up hoping for a white weekend. Diwali and the long weekends around Independence Day and Dussehra also push demand up sharply. For any of these windows, book the car at least a week ahead, and two weeks ahead if you need an Innova Crysta or a Tempo Traveller.
Pickup in Delhi NCR and drop points in Shimla
We collect from homes, offices and hotels across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and from IGI Airport. For airport starts, the chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you with a name board, and allows 60 minutes free after international arrivals or 30 after domestic, billing hourly after that; see our Delhi airport taxi page for terminal details. At the Shimla end, drops include the Mall area access points, Sanjauli, Chhota Shimla, Summer Hill, Kufri and Mashobra resorts, Chail and Naldehra.
If you are coming from Chandigarh instead of Delhi, a Chandigarh to Shimla taxi is a shorter and cheaper option. For local hire once you are in the hills, see our taxi service in Shimla.
