Taxi service in Dehradun

The Doon valley is Uttarakhand's capital, its school town and its gateway to the Garhwal hills, which means a car here does very different jobs in a single week: a Jolly Grant pickup on Monday, government-office rounds in the Secretariat area on Tuesday and a weekend climb to Mussoorie. A sedan transfer to or from the airport costs Rs 3,840 Pay Now to Reserve, an 8 hr/80 km day Rs 6,990 Pay Now to Reserve, and outstation kilometres are Rs 36 in a Dzire or Rs 57.6 in an Innova Crysta.

Dehradun taxi and cab service fares

The Dehradun local and airport rates are a little below our Delhi baseline, while outstation distance is billed at the national per-km figure for the car. GST at 5% is added on top. Expressway and highway tolls, Uttarakhand or Himachal entry fees, parking in Mussoorie and at Sahastradhara, and any permits are charged at actual cost. Overnight tours carry a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night, and outstation round trips bill at least 250 km per calendar day. • Mussoorie day trip in a sedan: about 35 km each way plus Kempty Falls, typically 90-100 km in total, so the 8 hr/80 km day at Rs 6,990 plus the extra 10-20 km at Rs 36 each and Mussoorie parking.
• Dhanaulti and Surkanda Devi overnight in an Innova: two days x 250 km minimum = 500 km x Rs 57.6 = Rs 28,500 plus one night allowance.
• Dehradun to Delhi one way: 250 km x Rs 36 = Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova, plus expressway tolls.

Dehradun outstation rates per kilometre

Fares updated September 2026. Outside the Doon valley every kilometre is billed at the rate for your car class. The table shows the rate alongside three real bookings: a one-way drop to Delhi (250 km), a one-way run to Janki Chatti for Yamunotri via Mussoorie and Barkot (about 175 km), and a two-day hill round trip that bills the 500 km minimum.

Luxury sedans are available for Delhi, Chandigarh and wedding use but not for the mountain yatra roads. Add tolls on the Delhi-Dehradun expressway and state highways, Uttarakhand and Himachal entry fees where they apply, parking, the driver's night allowance on overnight trips and 5% GST.

Local packages in Dehradun: 4, 8 and 12 hours

The city and its near hills are best done on a package. The 12 hr/120 km option is the 8-hour fare multiplied by 1.5, plus 40 km at the class rate; it is the right choice for an IMA parade day, a wedding with events morning and night, or a Mussoorie day that ends with dinner on the Mall.

Jolly Grant airport transfers

Jolly Grant (DED) sits south-east of the city near Doiwala, about 25 km from the Clock Tower and typically 45-60 minutes away depending on the Haridwar Road and Balliwala traffic. Rajpur Road hotels, the cantonment, Premnagar and Sahastradhara Road are all inside our airport fare band. For arrivals, the driver tracks your flight, meets you at the exit with a name board and waits 30 minutes free after a domestic landing or 60 minutes after an international one; beyond that the hourly waiting charge applies. Morning flights in December and January are sometimes delayed by fog in the plains, which is exactly why flight tracking matters. The rules for other airports are summarised under airport taxi.

Getting around Dehradun: local hire and office travel

The city runs north-south along Rajpur Road from the Clock Tower to the Mussoorie foothills, with Paltan Bazaar, the ISBT and the railway station at the southern end and the cantonment, FRI and IMA to the west. Mornings between 8 and 10 am and evenings after 5 pm are congested around Ballupur Chowk, Prince Chowk and the Saharanpur Road junction, and school timings add queues near the big boarding schools.

A 4 hr/40 km package suits one or two meetings at the Secretariat, ONGC or the Survey of India; the 8 hr day is the better choice for site visits or a family day covering:

• Forest Research Institute and its museum galleries in a vast colonial campus.
• Robbers Cave (Guchhupani), a stream through a narrow gorge about 8 km out.
• Sahastradhara, sulphur springs roughly 14 km north-east.
• Tapkeshwar Mahadev, a cave temple beside a seasonal stream.
• Mindrolling Monastery at Clement Town, with its tall stupa.
• Paltan Bazaar for basmati rice, woollens and bakery rusks.

Corporates and government contractors can open an account under corporate car rental for GST invoices, a single monthly bill and standing bookings.

Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Chakrata from the Doon

Mussoorie is the classic Dehradun excursion, a climb of about 35 km with many hairpins through Kolhukhet. On long weekends and in May-June the approach backs up for hours, and parking near the Mall Road is limited, so we plan morning starts and drop you at Library or Picture Palace end while the driver waits in a paid lot. Landour, Char Dukan and Lal Tibba are reached by narrow lanes where a sedan is easier than a big SUV. Kempty Falls is a further 15 km on the Yamunotri road.

Dhanaulti and Surkanda Devi lie about 60 km away past Mussoorie, with deodar forests and snow in good winters. The final climb to Surkanda Devi is on foot or by ropeway.

Chakrata, roughly 90 km north-west in the cantonment hills, needs an early start; foreign nationals should check current cantonment entry rules before travelling, and our desk will confirm what applies.

Rishikesh and Haridwar are an hour or so away and make a natural pairing for pilgrims, especially for the evening aarti.

Popular outstation routes from Dehradun with one-way fares

A single-direction drop is simply distance times the class rate. If you bring the car back with you, the charge is based on the real kilometres driven, with a floor of 250 km for each date on the booking, and the driver's overnight allowance is added. Tolls, entry fees, parking and 5% GST are extra.

Four Dehradun day plans

Doon heritage and nature (8 hr package). The Forest Research Institute's colonial buildings and museums at opening, Tapkeshwar cave temple, lunch on Rajpur Road, Robbers Cave in the afternoon and the Mindrolling stupa at Clement Town for sunset.

Mussoorie and Landour (12 hr package). Up via Kolhukhet early, Gun Hill ropeway, the Mall Road walk, Landour's Char Dukan and Lal Tibba, Kempty Falls if time allows, and down after dinner. Snow days in winter need an early decision on whether the car can go beyond Library Chowk.

Sahastradhara and Maldevta (4 or 8 hr package). The sulphur springs, the ropeway, a riverside lunch at Maldevta and the Raipur side's quieter roads.

Chakrata and Tiger Falls (outstation, one day). A long day into the cantonment hills with a walk to the falls; billed at the 250 km minimum.

Snow, monsoon and hill-driving rules

Dehradun itself rarely sees snow, but Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Chakrata can get it between late December and February. After a fresh fall the police sometimes stop cars below the snowline; we carry chains when snow is forecast and will advise whether an Innova or Fortuner is worth the extra for ground clearance. Black ice in the early morning is the real risk, so our drivers do not start the descent from Mussoorie before the sun is on the road.

The monsoon from July to September brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on the Mussoorie and Chakrata roads, plus waterlogging in low parts of the city. Drivers check the district's road bulletins, and the Dehradun district website posts official advisories. We do not drive mountain roads after dark in any season.

Char Dham and long tours starting in Dehradun

Dehradun is a practical base for the Char Dham because the Yamunotri road via Mussoorie and Barkot starts on its doorstep, and the Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath sectors follow in a loop. The temples open around late April or May and close near Diwali. Every pilgrim must register with the Uttarakhand government before setting out, and our cars carry the required commercial permits. Groups, weddings and passing-out parades

The Indian Military Academy holds its passing-out parades in June and December, and families arrive from across India for those weekends; hotels and cars fill quickly, so book early. School founders' days and parents' weekends at the Doon valley's boarding schools create similar peaks. Wedding season from November to February also keeps Tempo Travellers busy moving guests between Rajpur Road hotels and banquet halls on Sahastradhara Road.

Airport and railway station transfers in Dehradun

A transfer of up to 40 km is a fixed fare. Go further and each additional kilometre is charged at your car's outstation rate; the totals in the table already include that. Dehradun station sits at the southern end of the city near Paltan Bazaar; many visitors also arrive at Haridwar Junction, which has more long-distance trains.

Train and flight arrivals are tracked the same way; if the Shatabdi or a morning flight is held up by fog, the driver's reporting time moves with it at no extra cost.

Which cab is cheaper in Dehradun?

For a short ride within the city, a vikram, auto or app ride will generally cost less. When you need a car to wait at FRI, climb to Mussoorie and back, or carry a family and luggage to the airport, a pre-booked package is typically better value: Rs 6,990 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan for eight hours, fixed in advance, with no weekend surge. Is Ola or Uber available in Dehradun?

App-based ride-hailing operates in Dehradun for city rides. It is less suited to Mussoorie in the snow, Char Dham routes, early flights from Jolly Grant, or group travel in a Tempo Traveller, and supply thins out at odd hours. For those, book a named chauffeur and a specific car such as an Innova Crysta on rent, with a GST invoice at the end. Which car for which Doon trip?

Dehradun sits at around 450-700 metres, but almost every excursion climbs. Pick the car for the highest point of your day, not the flat city roads.

• City errands, airport runs, a couple travelling light: a Dzire or Amaze is economical and easy to park around Paltan Bazaar and Rajpur Road.
• Mussoorie with four adults: the climb is steep and long; an Ertiga or Innova gives the engine headroom and the passengers more space, and the higher seating helps with the bends.
• Families with elderly parents or small children: an Innova Crysta with captain seats is the calmest ride on the Kolhukhet hairpins and on long yatra days.
• Snow days in Dhanaulti or Chakrata: an Innova or a Fortuner for ground clearance; the driver carries chains when snow is forecast.
• School groups, IMA parade families and wedding guests: a Tempo Traveller or a Force Urbania, which has a lower floor and more headroom for older passengers.
• Corporate visitors to ONGC, the Survey of India or the Secretariat: a Honda City or Verna-class executive sedan, with the chauffeur waiting between appointments.

Luggage is the other limit. Two large suitcases fill a compact sedan's boot, so for three or more travellers flying in with checked bags, step up a class or ask for a roof carrier on a Tempo Traveller.

Travelling to Dehradun for study, medical visits or relocation

The Doon valley's boarding schools, universities and hospitals bring many families here on one-off trips: dropping a child at the start of term, attending a convocation, or accompanying a relative for treatment. For these, a pre-booked car removes one worry. Share the campus gate or hospital block when booking, and the driver will wait at the permitted parking; if you need several short trips over a few days, book a series of 4-hour packages rather than one long hire. Families relocating with more luggage can combine an Innova for passengers with a separate vehicle for boxes, quoted on WhatsApp.
