Dehradun has always been a drive rather than a flight for most Delhi families. Parents visit children at boarding school, retired officers go home to Rajpur Road, and holidaymakers pass through on the way to Mussoorie or the Char Dham. A Delhi to Dehradun taxi from RutzIndia.com makes that five-hour journey door to door, with a chauffeur who knows the valley's one-way streets and the school gates as well as the highway.
Delhi to Dehradun taxi fare, one way and return
A Delhi to Dehradun one way taxi costs Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a compact sedan (about 250 km at Rs 36/km) and Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. A same-day return is billed on 500 km, Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan. All fares are before 5% GST; tolls, parking and any state entry fee are extra at actual.
The table uses our standard per-km rates. Because the round trip here is exactly 500 km, a one-day return and a two-day return cost the same distance charge; the only difference on the two-day trip is the driver night allowance of Rs 1,500. The third column prices a popular three-day Doon Valley and Mussoorie holiday, billed at the 250 km per day minimum.
| Car | One way (250 km) | Return, 1 or 2 days (500 km) | 3-day Dehradun + Mussoorie (750 km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swift Dzire / Honda Amaze | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Honda City / Hyundai Verna | Rs 12,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 24,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Maruti Ertiga / Kia Carens | Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 31,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Innova Crysta / Hycross | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Toyota Fortuner | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 63,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Tempo Traveller | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 39,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 58,500 Pay Now to Reserve |

Which road your chauffeur will take
This is a corridor in transition, and the choice of road depends on what is open and flowing on the day.
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The new access-controlled Delhi-Dehradun Expressway starts in east Delhi near Akshardham and heads north through Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur before crossing the Shivalik foothills on a long elevated wildlife corridor near Rajaji and descending through a tunnel into the valley. Where sections are open, it bypasses the towns of western Uttar Pradesh and noticeably shortens the drive. Your chauffeur follows the current opening status and uses whichever stretches are running.
The Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee highway. The long-established route leaves Delhi on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, continues on NH334 past Meerut, Khatauli and Muzaffarnagar to Roorkee, and then either climbs through Chhutmalpur and the Mohand forest to Dehradun or goes via Haridwar and the Rishikesh road. It is a good four-lane road with plenty of food stops, and it is the fallback when the expressway has a closure.
Via Haridwar. If you want to stop at Har Ki Pauri or drop a family member in Haridwar or Rishikesh, the chauffeur routes through Haridwar and approaches Dehradun from the south-east. It adds a little distance but combines two errands in one fare.
Tolls and interstate notes
Tolls are collected on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the NH334 corridor and the new expressway, depending on the route. We do not quote a fixed toll figure because it varies with the road used and is revised periodically; all tolls are paid by FASTag and itemised at actual cost. The journey passes from Delhi through Uttar Pradesh into Uttarakhand. Our cars run on All-India tourist permits, and if Uttarakhand or any other state levies an entry fee or cess on outside commercial vehicles on the day, it is passed on at cost with the receipt.
The best time to set off
- 6 am from east or central Delhi: you are across the Yamuna before the traffic, through western UP by 9 am, and in Dehradun for a late breakfast.
- Afternoon departures: fine on weekdays, but you will reach the valley after dark. Night driving on the plains is routine; the hill road beyond Dehradun to Mussoorie is better tackled in daylight.
- School weekends: Doon School, Welham and the other boarding schools hold parents' weekends, founders' days and term-end pickups, and those Fridays and Sundays are the busiest of the year. Book early and expect a queue at the school gates.
- Kanwar Yatra (July-August, around Sawan): pilgrims walk the Haridwar-Delhi corridor in large numbers and traffic is diverted for days. Your chauffeur will plan around the published diversions, but journeys can take noticeably longer.

Stops on the Delhi to Dehradun road
- Khatauli and Muzaffarnagar: the traditional halfway breakfast and lunch stops, with large highway restaurants and clean washrooms.
- Roorkee: the Ganga canal and the old IIT campus; a quick tea stop before the forest stretch.
- Mohand and the Shivalik pass: a short, green climb through reserve forest, with the small Daat Kali temple where many drivers pause for a moment of prayer before entering the valley.
- Haridwar: if routed this way, a stop for the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is worth planning; see the Delhi to Haridwar taxi if that is your main destination.
Pickup areas in Delhi and NCR
We collect from every part of the capital region. East Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad (Mayur Vihar, Indirapuram, Vaishali, Noida sectors) are closest to the start of both expressways and save time. South and west Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad add city driving that is reflected in the quote.
IGI Airport to Dehradun: travellers returning from abroad often prefer to drive rather than connect to Jolly Grant. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits at arrivals with a name board; you get 60 minutes free after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, with further waiting billed hourly. See the Delhi airport taxi page.

Drops in Dehradun and the valley
- Rajpur Road and the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar): hotels, the old market and the start of the Mussoorie road.
- Boarding schools: the Doon School and Welham campuses in the centre, and the schools spread along the valley. The chauffeur can wait while you settle a child in.
- Cantonment, Clement Town and the Indian Military Academy: passing-out parade families book this route heavily in June and December.
- Forest Research Institute: the colonial campus and museums at the western edge of the city.
- Jolly Grant Airport: about 25 km south-east, for onward flights.
- Sahastradhara, Robber's Cave (Guchhupani) and Maldevta: easy day outings once you arrive.
For local hire during your stay, the Dehradun taxi service offers 8 hr / 80 km cars, and the Uttarakhand Tourism site lists festivals and destinations across the state.
Onward: Mussoorie, Rishikesh and the Char Dham
Dehradun is the base camp for Uttarakhand. Mussoorie is about 35 km uphill on a winding road, and the Delhi to Mussoorie taxi takes you all the way without a change of car. Rishikesh is roughly 45 km away via Doiwala; the Delhi to Rishikesh taxi suits yoga retreats and rafting camps.
From late April or May, when the temples open, many families use Dehradun as the start of the Char Dham yatra by car, usually in an Innova or a Tempo Traveller. Hill driving follows its own rules: our chauffeurs do not drive the mountain roads at night, take regular rest breaks, and give way to uphill traffic. For groups, a Tempo Traveller in Dehradun can be booked for the whole yatra.
Picking the right car for the Doon Valley
The plains section of this trip is easy on any car, so the choice really depends on people, luggage and what you will do after arriving.
- Compact sedan, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve one way: right for one to three passengers with two suitcases, such as a parent visiting a school or a professional heading to a meeting at the Secretariat or ONGC offices.
- Premium sedan, Rs 12,000 Pay Now to Reserve: a quieter, roomier cabin for senior officials, returning NRIs and anyone who wants to work on a laptop on the way.
- Ertiga, Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve: a budget six-seater for families with soft bags; good value if grandparents are travelling too.
- Innova Crysta, Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve: the most requested car on this route. Captain seats, a proper boot, and the power and ground clearance you want if the plan extends to Mussoorie, Dhanaulti or the Char Dham.
- Fortuner, Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve: for those who prefer an SUV on hill roads or in winter when Mussoorie sees snow.
- Tempo Traveller, Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve: ten to seventeen seats for school groups, family functions, IMA passing-out parade parties and yatra groups.
Students joining college in Dehradun often travel with more luggage than they expect; if in doubt, book the bigger car. The difference between an Ertiga and an Innova on this route is Rs 3,750 Pay Now to Reserve before tax, which is small compared with an uncomfortable five hours.
Seasons to plan around
March to June is the busiest holiday season, when Delhi escapes the heat. The monsoon from July to September makes the valley lush but brings landslides on the Mussoorie road and closures further into the hills; allow flexibility. October and November are clear and pleasant, with Diwali traffic. December to February brings cold, foggy mornings on the plains and occasional snow in Mussoorie, which draws weekend crowds.

All figures are before 5% GST; Rolls-Royce and similar cars are quoted on request.
Worked example: a passing-out parade weekend
A family of five from Noida drives up for a cadet's passing-out parade at the Indian Military Academy, stays one night and returns the next afternoon. An Innova Crysta on rent for two days is billed on 500 km: Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve. Add one night allowance of Rs 1,500, 5% GST of Rs 1,430 on the fare, and the tolls and parking at actual. Parade weekends in June and December are among the most heavily booked dates on this corridor, so reserve the car as soon as the date is announced.
Distance, time and toll plazas on the Meerut-Roorkee route
This breakdown follows the established highway from Akshardham to the Clock Tower. Distances are approximate; plaza positions are as commonly known, and more may be added as roads are upgraded. Every toll is paid by FASTag and billed at actual.
| Stretch | About | Typical time | Toll plaza |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akshardham to Meerut (Delhi-Meerut Expressway) | 70 km | 60 min | expressway plaza near Meerut |
| Meerut bypass to Khatauli (NH334) | 35 km | 30 min | Siwaya plaza |
| Khatauli to Muzaffarnagar | 20 km | 20 min | none |
| Muzaffarnagar to Roorkee | 55 km | 50 min | a plaza north of Muzaffarnagar |
| Roorkee to Chhutmalpur | 25 km | 25 min | none |
| Chhutmalpur to Dehradun via the Mohand pass | 45 km | 60 min | none on the forest stretch |
| Total | about 250 km | about 5 hrs |
If the chauffeur routes via Haridwar instead, the last leg runs from Haridwar through Raiwala and Doiwala, where the Lachhiwala plaza sits on the Haridwar-Dehradun road. Background on the first stretch is on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway page. On open sections of the new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, tolls are charged by the operator for the distance used; they appear on your invoice in the same way.
Shatabdi, Volvo, self-drive or a chauffeur-driven cab?
| Option | Door to door? | Typical journey | Luggage and comfort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dehradun Shatabdi or Vande Bharat | No: station to station | About 4.5 to 6 hrs depending on the train | Carry-on only, fixed seats | Solo travellers near New Delhi or Anand Vihar |
| Uttarakhand or private Volvo bus | No: ISBT to ISBT | About 6-7 hrs | Boot, but you handle it | Budget solo trips |
| Flight to Jolly Grant | No: airport to airport | About 1 hr in the air, plus airport time | Checked baggage | Travellers who can reach IGI easily |
| Self-drive rental | Yes | About 5 hrs, you drive | Depends on car | Drivers who want a car for a week in the hills |
| Chauffeur-driven cab | Yes | About 5 hrs, you rest | Boot plus cabin, stops on request | Families, school visits, Mussoorie and yatra trips |
The Dehradun Shatabdi is a reliable day train, and schedules for it and the Vande Bharat can be checked on the Indian Railways enquiry site. The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation runs coaches from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Dehradun's ISBT on the Saharanpur Road. Both are sensible for one traveller with a backpack. The cab makes sense once you factor in the family, the luggage, a school or IMA gate that is nowhere near the station, or a plan to go on to Mussoorie the same afternoon. Self-drive is fine on the plains, but the Mussoorie road and anything further into the hills demand experience with hairpin bends and uphill right of way.
Pickup variants: airport, stations and districts

At the Dehradun end, the chauffeur can also meet an onward flight at Jolly Grant, drop at the Dehradun railway station near Paltan Bazaar, or take you straight to a school gate, a hotel on Rajpur Road or a home in Vasant Vihar, Doon's residential west.
Sightseeing add-ons in the Doon Valley
If you keep a car for a day in Dehradun, local packages use the city's rates, listed on the Dehradun taxi service page.
| Dehradun local package | Compact sedan | Innova Crysta | Tempo Traveller |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 hr / 40 km | Rs 4,190 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,330 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,350 Pay Now to Reserve |
| 8 hr / 80 km | Rs 6,980 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,220 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,910 Pay Now to Reserve |
Ideas that fit:
- Sahastradhara: the sulphur springs and caves roughly 15 km north-east of the city; weekday mornings are calmest.
- Robber's Cave (Guchhupani): a narrow river gorge you walk through in ankle-deep water, a short drive from Anarwala.
- Forest Research Institute: the red-brick campus and its forestry museums, a favourite for photographs.
- Tapkeshwar Mahadev: the cave temple by a stream, busy on Mondays in Sawan and on Shivratri.
- Mindrolling Monastery, Clement Town: a large Tibetan Buddhist monastery with a tall stupa and gardens.
- Mussoorie for the day: Mall Road and Company Garden can fit a full-day package from central Dehradun. Adding Kempty Falls or Dhanaulti goes beyond 80 km, so the desk will quote it before you set off. Background on the town is on the Mussoorie page.
The Dehradun district administration lists official tourist information and local notices, including traffic advisories during festivals.

Boarding-school runs: term starts, outings and parents' days
Dehradun's schools shape the traffic on this road more than any festival. At the start and end of each term, hundreds of families make the same journey on the same two or three days, and the roads around the campuses fill with cars from late morning.
- Term start: book early, pack the trunk the night before and aim to leave Delhi by 6 am, so you reach the school before the gates get crowded. An Ertiga or Innova is usually needed for trunks, bedding and tuck boxes.
- Parents' weekends and founders' days: most families book a two-day return, billed on 500 km, and stay at a Rajpur Road or Mussoorie Road hotel. The chauffeur waits during the programme and drives you to lunch with your child if outings are allowed.
- Term end and exeats: a one-way pickup from the school to Delhi can be booked on its own, priced on the same distance. Tell us the school's collection time and the gate to use.
- Students travelling alone: if a school permits a pre-booked car to collect a student, we need the school's written authorisation and the parent's contact on the booking. The chauffeur's details are shared with the school in advance.
We follow each school's own visitor and pickup rules; the chauffeur will not enter a campus without permission.
Starting the Char Dham from Dehradun
From late April or May, when the temples at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath open, Dehradun becomes a staging point for the yatra. A typical plan collects the family in Delhi, spends the first night in Dehradun or Haridwar, and heads into the mountains the next morning. Multi-day yatra bookings follow the same rule as any round trip: the actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day, whichever is higher. On a ten-day trip that floor is 2,500 km, which is Rs 1,42,500 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova Crysta or Rs 1,95,000 Pay Now to Reserve by Tempo Traveller before GST, with night allowances, tolls, state fees and parking at actual. Government registration requirements for yatris are announced each season; our desk shares the current rules at booking. Full itineraries are on the Char Dham yatra by car page, and the pilgrimage taxi page covers other temple circuits.
Booking, inclusions and cancellation
Book through the online booker: choose one way or return, the car and the time, and the fare appears with 5% GST shown on a separate line. Pay by card or UPI; GST invoices can be raised in a company's name for official travel. The fare includes the car, the chauffeur and fuel. Passed through at actual: tolls, parking, any state entry fee, and the Rs 1,500 night allowance on overnight trips. Every car is within four model years.
Cancelling is free until 72 hours before pickup. After that, the charge is 10% of the fare (inside 72 hours), 50% (inside 48 hours), or the whole fare (inside 24 hours or a no-show). The cancellation policy has the details.
