Kashi does not really do cars. The heart of the city is a maze of galis running down to the Ganga, where only pedestrians, cycle rickshaws and the occasional bull have right of way. That is exactly why a good taxi service in Varanasi is valuable: someone reliable to meet you at Babatpur airport or the Cantt station, take you to the nearest point a car may reach, wait while you walk to the ghats, and then carry you comfortably to Sarnath, Prayagraj or Bodh Gaya. RutzIndia.com books chauffeur-driven cars for all of it, at fixed fares you see before you pay.
If you are searching for a cab service in Varanasi for your parents' pilgrimage, a family visit around Dev Deepawali, or a Buddhist circuit, the prices, rules and local knowledge you need are gathered here.

Babatpur airport and the city's three railway stations
Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is at Babatpur, north-west of the city. Dashashwamedh and the old city are roughly 25 km away, and the trip takes 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic through the Chaukaghat and Maldahiya crossings. The four-lane airport road has made the drive much easier than it was. The driver tracks the flight, stands at arrivals with a name board, and waits up to 30 minutes free after a domestic arrival or 60 minutes after an international one; anything longer is billed at the hourly rate.
Trains arrive at three main stations: Varanasi Junction (usually called Cantt), Banaras station at Manduadih, and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, the old Mughalsarai, across the river. Tell us which one, because the last is a separate 17 km drive.
| Pickup or drop | Approx. distance from Babatpur | Sedan | Innova Crysta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varanasi Junction (Cantt) and nearby hotels | 20 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |

How the ghats change the way you use a car
Around the Dashashwamedh ghat and the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, much of the old city is a no-vehicle zone at busy hours, and police barricades move with the crowds. In practice:
- Drop points. Cars usually stop at Godowlia, Maidagin or near the Kashi Vishwanath corridor gate, depending on the time and the day's restrictions. From there, walk or take an e-rickshaw.
- Hotels on the ghats. Many guesthouses sit in the lanes above the river with no car access at all. The driver will stop at the closest point and help you with bags to a porter.
- Kashi Vishwanath darshan. Check timings, aarti tickets and the list of items not allowed inside on the official Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple site. Phones and bags are often not permitted, so leave them in the car.
- Evening aarti. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh begins around sunset. Traffic into Godowlia is heaviest in the hour before, so leave your hotel early; the driver waits at the agreed point afterwards.
- Boats. Sunrise boat rides start from Assi or Dashashwamedh; book your boat separately, and the car will be waiting at the ghat you finish at.

A dawn-to-aarti day in Varanasi by taxi
This plan works inside an 8 hour / 80 km package if you split it into a morning and an evening with a rest in between, or book two 4 hour / 40 km slabs.
- 5:00 am, Assi Ghat. Subah-e-Banaras, the morning music and aarti programme, then a sunrise boat along the ghats towards Manikarnika.
- 8:00 am, Breakfast. Kachori-sabzi and jalebi in the lanes, or a cafe at Assi.
- 9:30 am, Banaras Hindu University. The New Vishwanath temple on the campus and the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum.
- 11:30 am, Sarnath. About 10 km north of Cantt. The Dhamek Stupa, the archaeological museum with the Lion Capital, and the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara. The museum is closed on Fridays.
- 2:00 pm, Rest. Back to the hotel through the heat.
- 5:00 pm, Kashi Vishwanath Dham. Darshan and a walk through the corridor to Lalita Ghat.
- 6:30 pm, Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh. Then dinner and a drop at the hotel.
Travelling as a large family group? A tempo traveller in Varanasi keeps everyone together, and the driver deals with the single parking slot rather than two.
Outstation cabs from Varanasi: Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Bodh Gaya
Varanasi is one corner of a great pilgrim triangle, and the roads to Prayagraj, Ayodhya and Bodh Gaya have improved greatly. Fares follow the standard rule: distance times the per-km rate, one-way drops billed on the one-way distance, round trips on the higher of actual kilometres or 250 km per day. The outstation cabs page has the details.
| From Varanasi | Approx. km | Time | Sedan one way | Innova one way | Sedan same-day return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chunar Fort (minimum fare applies) | 40 km | 1 hr | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Vindhyachal (minimum fare applies) | 70 km | 2 hrs | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Prayagraj (Sangam) | 125 km | 3 hrs | Rs 4,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,130 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ayodhya | 210 km | 4.5 hrs | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,970 Pay Now to Reserve | not advised |
| Bodh Gaya | 250 km | 6 hrs | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve | not advised |
| Kushinagar | 270 km | 6 hrs | Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve | not advised |
| Lucknow (Purvanchal Expressway) | 320 km | 5 hrs | Rs 11,520 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 18,240 Pay Now to Reserve | not advised |
Worked example: Prayagraj Sangam day trip. The return journey of about 250 km lands exactly on the day minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan and Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before GST and tolls. During the Magh Mela from January to February, set off before 5 am; on main snan days vehicles are stopped well short of the Sangam and shuttles take over.
Worked example: Buddhist circuit, three days. Sarnath, Bodh Gaya and Rajgir or Nalanda over three days covers roughly 700 km and is billed on 750 km (3 x 250): Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova, plus two nights of driver allowance and the Bihar permit at actual cost.
Ayodhya and Lucknow. Many families continue from Varanasi to Ayodhya and fly home from Lucknow. Our taxi service in Lucknow page covers the capital, and the pilgrimage taxi guide collects temple timings and dress rules across the region. A one-way taxi avoids paying for the car's empty return.

Dev Deepawali, Sawan and other peak dates
Some dates in Varanasi need planning weeks ahead:
- Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima, about 15 days after Diwali, usually November). The ghats are lit with lakhs of diyas and the city fills to capacity. Vehicle entry to the old city is sharply restricted from the afternoon; drivers drop you at the outer barricade and pick you up there after midnight. Book boats and hotels well in advance and your car at least two weeks ahead.
- Mahashivratri (February-March). Huge queues at Kashi Vishwanath; darshan can take many hours.
- Sawan (July-August). Kanwariyas walking to the temple on Monday mornings mean road diversions across the city, and the monsoon raises the Ganga, closing some ghat steps.
- Ganga Mahotsav (around Kartik Purnima). Evening cultural programmes on the ghats.
- Chhath Puja (after Diwali). Crowds on the ghats at dawn and dusk.
- Winter fog (late December to January). Flights and trains run late; the driver tracks both, so you are not charged for delays. Highway speeds drop sharply and we plan longer drives accordingly.
The Varanasi district portal publishes traffic and festival advisories worth checking the day before.
Varanasi taxi per km rates by vehicle (2026)
Fares updated September 2026. When your journey leaves Kashi, the fare is simply kilometres multiplied by the rate for your car. The rate does not change for Dev Deepawali, Mahashivratri or the Magh Mela; we would rather keep one honest number all year. The three columns on the right show one-way fares to the Sangam at Prayagraj, to Ayodhya and to Bodh Gaya.
| Varanasi car | Seats | Per km | Prayagraj (125 km) | Ayodhya (210 km) | Bodh Gaya (250 km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Innova (pilgrim families) | 6 | Rs 57.6 | Rs 7,130 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,970 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga | 6 | Rs 42 | Rs 5,250 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,820 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Dzire / Amaze | 4 | Rs 36 | Rs 4,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Traveller (sangh groups) | 16 | Rs 78 | Rs 9,870 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 16,380 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 19,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Verna / City | 4 | Rs 48 | Rs 6,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,080 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Urbania | 17 | Rs 102 | Rs 13,650 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 21,420 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 25,500 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Fortuner | 6 | Rs 84 | Rs 11,370 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies) | Rs 17,640 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 21,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| E-Class | 3 | Rs 170 | Rs 20,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 34,650 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 41,250 Pay Now to Reserve |
A few examples make the rules concrete. A Dzire dropping you at the Sangam costs 125 x Rs 36 = Rs 4,500 Pay Now to Reserve. A same-day return to Vindhyachal of about 140 km falls below the 250 km daily floor and is billed at Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve. A four-day loop to Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda and back, about 850 km, is compared with the 1,000 km floor for four days and billed on 1,000 km, or Rs 57,000 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, plus three nights of driver allowance and the Bihar permit at actual cost.
Kashi packages: 4, 8 and 12 hours
Most Varanasi visitors want to pack a lot into a single day: a sunrise boat from Assi, darshan at Kashi Vishwanath, the BHU campus, Sarnath after lunch and the Ganga Aarti at dusk. That is a twelve-hour day, and the 12 hour / 120 km package exists for it. Its price follows a fixed formula: the 8 hour Varanasi fare times 1.5, plus 40 km at the car's outstation rate, rounded to the nearest Rs 10.
| Kashi package | 12 hours / 120 km | 4 hours / 40 km | 8 hours / 80 km | Every km beyond |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17-seat Traveller | Rs 30,030 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 10,770 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 17,940 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 78/km |
| Amaze / Aura | Rs 11,370 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 36/km |
| Hycross / Crysta | Rs 19,680 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,960 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,580 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 57.6/km |
| 17-seat Urbania | Rs 41,340 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,910 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 24,840 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 102/km |
| Carens / Ertiga | Rs 14,100 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 4,980 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,280 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42/km |
| City / Verna | Rs 16,830 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 5,970 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 9,930 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 48/km |
| 5 Series / E-Class | Rs 58,350 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 20,700 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 34,500 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 165.6/km |
All slabs are before 5% GST. They run from your pickup to your final drop. The right-hand column is what each kilometre beyond the allowance costs; extra time is billed at the hourly rate the booker shows before you pay. A general explanation of city packages is on local car rental 8 hr / 80 km.
Railway station and bus stand pickups
Varanasi has more railway stations than most visitors realise, and choosing the right one for your pickup saves a lot of time. Transfers within 40 km cost the same as the airport slab: Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve for a Dzire-class car, Rs 4,560 Pay Now to Reserve for an Ertiga and Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve for an Innova.
| Station or stand | Nearest hotel areas | Road distance | Dzire | Innova |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varanasi Junction (Cantt) | Cantonment, Nadesar, Maldahiya | about 1-3 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Varanasi Junction (Cantt) | Godowlia car limit, Dashashwamedh | about 5 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Banaras station (Manduadih) | Assi, Lanka, BHU | about 4-6 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Pt. DDU Junction (Mughalsarai) | Cantt or Assi hotels | about 17-22 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Kashi station (Rajghat) | Maidagin, Chowk, Machhodari | about 3-5 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Varanasi City station | Jaitpura, Chowk | about 2-4 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
| UPSRTC Cantt bus station | Sigra, Mahmoorganj | about 2-4 km | Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve |
DDU Junction is where many Rajdhani and Howrah-line trains stop instead of Varanasi itself. It is across the Ganga, and the bridge approaches can be slow in the evening, so allow forty-five minutes to reach the ghats.

A second day around Varanasi: weavers, Ramnagar and Chunar
If you have an extra day, the countryside and crafts around Kashi are worth the drive, and they suit an 8 hour / 80 km package or a same-day round trip.
Morning with the weavers. Banarasi silk is woven in family workshops in areas such as Madanpura, Lallapura and the villages towards Sarai Mohana. Visiting a working loom shows you how a brocade saree can take weeks to finish. Go with a trusted contact or a reputed shop, and ask the driver to wait while you look; there is no obligation to buy.
Ramnagar Fort. Across the river from the southern ghats, the eighteenth-century fort of the Kashi royal family has a museum of vintage cars, palanquins, arms and astronomical clocks. The drive over the bridge from Lanka takes about half an hour. In the Dussehra season, the month-long Ramnagar Ramlila is staged across the town, drawing large crowds in the evenings.
Chunar Fort. About 40 km south-west, the sandstone fort above a bend in the Ganga has a long history linked with Sher Shah Suri and the Mughals, and the town is known for its stone and pottery. Combined with Ramnagar, the day adds up to a little over 100 km and is billed as a same-day round trip on the 250 km minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire.
Evening on the water. Return in time for a boat at dusk from a quieter ghat such as Kedar or Panchganga, away from the main aarti crowd.
Boat, e-rickshaw, app cab or a chauffeur in Varanasi?
Varanasi is a city where the right vehicle depends on the hour and the street. Along the river, a boat is the best way to move between ghats. In the lanes, you walk. On the main roads, you have choices.
| Mode | Best use | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Rowing or motor boat | Moving between ghats, sunrise and aarti viewing | Book at the ghat or through your hotel; fares vary by season |
| E-rickshaw | Short rides up to the no-vehicle barricades | Crowded at aarti time; little room for bags |
| App-based cab | Point-to-point rides between hotels and the station | Fewer cars in fog, at dawn and on festival days |
| Chauffeur-driven car (RutzIndia.com) | Airport and station runs, Sarnath, full days, pilgrim circuits | Book well ahead for Dev Deepawali and Mahashivratri |
Travelling to Kashi for last rites and asthi visarjan
Many families come to Varanasi at a difficult time, to immerse ashes in the Ganga or perform rites at Manikarnika or Harishchandra ghat, and sometimes to continue to Gaya for pind daan. We try to make the travel part simple. The driver meets you at the airport or station, takes you as close to the ghat as vehicles are allowed, and waits for as long as the rites take; an 8 or 12 hour package usually covers the day without anyone having to think about the fare. For Gaya, a two-day trip is billed on the 500 km two-day minimum, or the actual distance if higher, with the Bihar permit at actual cost. Tell the desk about any elderly family members or special needs, and we will send an Innova Crysta with easy seat access and space for belongings. Large family groups can use a 12 seater tempo traveller or a mini bus on rent so everyone travels together.
