Local and airport prices include a modest Jodhpur adjustment; highway kilometres use the national per-km rate. Rupee fares exclude 5% GST. Seeing the Blue City by car

A full city day in a car with driver typically follows this order:

1. Mehrangarh Fort as soon as it opens, before the heat builds. The driver drops you at the main car park below Jai Pol; the lift saves the climb.
2. Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph a short drive away, with views back to the fort.
3. Umaid Bhawan Palace museum in the late morning; part of the palace is a hotel and part a royal residence, so only the museum wing is open to day visitors.
4. Mandore Gardens, about 9 km north, for the red-sandstone cenotaphs of the Marwar rulers.
5. Clock Tower and Sardar Market at dusk, for spices, bandhej and the famous omelette stalls.

Cars cannot enter much of the old walled city around Navchokiya and Brahmpuri; the lanes are barely wide enough for a scooter. Your driver will park at the nearest permitted point and wait while you walk the blue houses or hop into an auto-rickshaw. Jodhpur airport taxi

Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is one of the closest airports to a city centre anywhere in India: about 5 km from Ratanada and the Circuit House, typically 15-20 minutes by road. It is shared with the Air Force, so photography around the approach roads is restricted and drivers do not stop there. Airport and railway station transfers in Jodhpur

Transfers of up to 40 km are fixed. For longer runs, the total shown is the transfer fare plus the kilometres beyond 40 at the car's per-km rate. Jodhpur has three stations that matter to visitors: Jodhpur Junction near the old city, Raika Bagh just east of it, and Bhagat ki Kothi to the south, where several long-distance trains terminate.

Outstation from Jodhpur: Jaisalmer, Udaipur and the Marwar circuit

Jaisalmer. The road runs west through Balesar and Pokaran, about five hours. Most travellers stop at the Khuri or Sam dunes before checking in; the car waits at the camp and drives you into the fort city the next morning. Winter nights in the desert drop close to freezing, so bring layers.

Udaipur via Ranakpur. The marble Jain temple at Ranakpur sits in the Aravalli forest roughly halfway; Kumbhalgarh fort is a detour worth the extra kilometres. Half-day and day trips close to Jodhpur

Not every excursion needs an overnight bag. These run comfortably inside a 4 hr or 8 hr package, or on a single-day outstation bill:

• Bishnoi villages and Guda Bishnoi lake, about 25 km south-east. Families here are known for protecting blackbuck and chinkara, and you may see both near the lake at dawn. Potters' and weavers' homes in Salawas sell dhurries directly. Most people do this in a 4 hr/40 km package.
• Kaylana and Takhat Sagar lakes, on the western edge of the city, for sunset and migratory birds in winter.
• Osian, about 65 km north, with the Sachiya Mata temple and a cluster of eighth- to eleventh-century Hindu and Jain temples; camel rides and dune camps lie just beyond the town. As a return trip it falls under the 250 km daily minimum.
• Khimsar, roughly 95 km north-east, where a fort hotel and a small dune village make an easy overnight escape from the city.
• Luni and Rohet, south on the Pali road, for heritage stays and horse safaris; the driver can wait or return the next morning.

Three Jodhpur itineraries by car

One day in the Blue City (12 hr package). Mehrangarh at opening, the Chokelao Bagh gardens inside the fort, a zipline if you want the view, Jaswant Thada, lunch at a Ratanada restaurant, the Umaid Bhawan museum, Mandore in the late afternoon and the stepwell at Toorji ka Jhalra before dinner near the Clock Tower. Twelve hours sounds long, but in winter it is comfortable, and it avoids paying for extra hours piecemeal.

Two days with the desert (outstation). Day one in the city, day two west to Osian's temples and dunes with a sunset at a camp, returning after dinner. Billed as outstation, the second day falls under the 250 km minimum.

Five days, Marwar and Mewar (outstation). Jodhpur, Jaisalmer for two nights, back through Jodhpur to Ranakpur and on to Udaipur. Heat, seasons and festivals

Jodhpur is hot from April to June, with afternoon temperatures that regularly cross 40 degrees. Every car we send is air-conditioned, drivers carry drinking water, and we schedule fort visits early. Dust storms can reduce visibility on the Jaisalmer road in May-June; the driver will pull over and wait if needed. The monsoon is short and light here.

The best months are October to March. The Marwar Festival around Sharad Purnima and the Rajasthan International Folk Festival held at Mehrangarh in October draw visitors from abroad, as do Diwali, when the old city is lit, and Holi in March. Book cars early for all of these.

Desert highway habits our drivers follow

Western Rajasthan's roads are wide and straight, which tempts drivers to speed; the hazards are elsewhere. Cattle and camels wander on to the carriageway around villages, blackbuck and nilgai cross near the Bishnoi belt at dawn and dusk, and heavily loaded trucks run without proper lights after dark on the Jaisalmer and Barmer roads. Is Ola or Uber available in Jodhpur?

App-based ride-hailing does operate in Jodhpur for city rides, though the number of cars online can be modest compared with the metros, particularly early in the morning, late at night and near the outlying wedding venues. App rides are also not designed for multi-day desert tours or for a Tempo Traveller for a wedding party.
