All fares are before 5% GST. Tolls, parking and interstate permits (for Tamil Nadu or Karnataka crossings) are charged at actual cost. Multi-day trips add a driver night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night, and round trips are billed on a minimum of 250 km per calendar day.

CIAL airport cabs: distance and fare by area

Cochin International Airport is at Nedumbassery, north of the city and close to Aluva and Angamaly. It is a long way from the island districts, so it pays to know the distances. International flights from the Gulf cluster in the early morning and late evening; your driver tracks the flight, stands at arrivals with a name board and waits free for 60 minutes after an international landing (30 minutes after domestic), which covers most immigration and baggage queues. Island, mainland and Infopark: local hire in Kochi

Kochi is really several places joined by bridges and ferries: the mainland business district of Ernakulam, the IT corridor at Kakkanad, the port on Willingdon Island, and the old quarters of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry on the western peninsula. Practical local knowledge:

• Vyttila, Edappally and Kundanoor junctions are the city's worst bottlenecks, from 8:30 to 10:30 am and 5 to 8 pm. Drivers use the NH66 bypass and Seaport-Airport Road where it helps.
• Fort Kochi streets are narrow and one-way in places, and the heritage core gets crowded with tourists on winter weekends. The driver drops you near the Chinese fishing nets or at Jew Town and waits at a nearby lot.

A slow day in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry

1. 7:30 am, Chinese fishing nets. Watch the lift nets at work on the beach road, then breakfast nearby.
2. 9:00 am, St Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica. Two landmark churches a short walk apart.
3. 10:30 am, Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town. The palace murals, the Paradesi Synagogue (check closing days) and the spice and antique shops.
4. 1:00 pm, Lunch. A Kerala meal or seafood in the Fort Kochi cafes.
5. 3:00 pm, Art galleries and warehouses. In Biennale years, the old godowns become venues.
6. 5:30 pm, Sunset cruise or Marine Drive walk. Back across the bridge to Ernakulam.
7. 7:30 pm, Drop home.

Munnar, Alleppey and beyond: outstation cabs from Kochi

Kochi is the natural base for a road trip through Kerala's hills, backwaters and beaches. Outstation fares are the kilometres travelled multiplied by the per-km rate; one-way drops are billed on one-way distance, round trips on the higher of actual distance or 250 km per day. Worked example: Munnar two-day trip. Kochi to Munnar and back, with local sightseeing, usually adds up to about 350 km over two days. The billed distance is the higher of that or 2 x 250 = 500 km, so a sedan costs 500 x Rs 36 = Rs 18,000 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta 500 x Rs 57.6 = Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve, plus one night of driver allowance. The ghat section after Adimali is winding; drivers slow down in fog and avoid driving the hill road late at night in the monsoon.

Worked example: Alleppey houseboat transfer. A drop at the Punnamada jetty is billed at the minimum fare, Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan; if you want the car to wait and bring you back the same day, the 250 km day minimum makes it Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve. Monsoon, Onam and the Sabarimala season

• South-west monsoon (June to September). Heavy rain, lush hills and lower hotel prices. Landslide advisories can close Munnar or Idukki roads for a few hours; the desk will adjust timings.
• Onam (August-September). Families fly in from the Gulf, so airport pickups peak in the week before Thiruvonam. Book early.
• Nehru Trophy boat race (August). Alleppey roads are packed on race day; plan an early drop.
• Sabarimala Mandala-Makaravilakku season (November to January). Pilgrim traffic is heavy on the Pamba and Erumeli roads. We can book Innovas and tempo travellers for groups.
• Christmas and New Year. Fort Kochi's carnival and the burning of the Pappanji on 31 December close roads in the heritage area.

Kochi taxi charges per kilometre (2026)

Fares updated September 2026. For every trip that leaves Kochi, we charge by the kilometre according to the car class, with no seasonal surcharge for Onam, Christmas or the Sabarimala months. The columns on the right show one-way fares to three drives Kochi guests book constantly: the backwaters, the tea hills and the southern tip of India.

The billing logic stays the same everywhere. One-way drops are distance times rate, never below the minimum fare. Round trips are billed on the actual kilometres or 250 km for every calendar day, whichever is higher. A three-day Munnar and Thekkady circuit of about 450 km is therefore billed on 750 km: Rs 27,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 42,750 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, plus two nights of driver allowance, tolls and parking. Interstate trips to Tamil Nadu, such as Kanyakumari or Ooty, add the state permit at actual cost.

Short, standard and long-day hire in Kochi

Kochi days can be long: a Gulf family arriving at 4 am who want to visit relatives in Aluva and Thrissur before settling in, or a wedding party moving between a church in Fort Kochi and a reception in Kakkanad. All figures exclude 5% GST. The package clock runs from pickup to final drop. Railway stations, bus terminals and ferry jetties

Transfers from stations, bus terminals and jetties within 40 km use the same slab as the airport: Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, Rs 4,950 Pay Now to Reserve in an Ertiga and Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta, before GST.

Ernakulam Junction is where most long-distance trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi stop. The station has two sides, and the driver will confirm by phone whether to wait at the main entrance or the east gate. Many Kerala Express and Rajdhani arrivals are in the small hours, so drivers watch the running status and adjust.

Guruvayur and Sabarimala pilgrim trips from Kochi

Two pilgrim drives from Kochi need a little more planning than the rest.

Guruvayur. The Sri Krishna temple is about 85 km north, typically two and a half hours through Thrissur district. Darshan queues are longest on weekends, Malayalam month-start days and in the wedding season, when dozens of weddings take place at the temple each morning. The temple follows a strict dress code (men in mundu without a shirt, women in saree or salwar) and entry to the inner temple is restricted to Hindus. A same-day return of about 170 km is billed on the 250 km day minimum: Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan or Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. Many families add the elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta on the way back.

Sabarimala. During the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, private vehicles usually park at the Nilakkal base camp, and pilgrims continue to Pamba by state transport bus before the climb. Drivers wait at Nilakkal for the return, which can mean a long day or an overnight halt; we quote these trips as round trips with the day minimum and a night allowance where needed. In the city, autos and app cabs are cheaper for a single short ride, and the Kochi Metro and Water Metro are excellent for light travellers. The balance shifts when there is luggage, waiting or distance.

Driving in Kerala: what to expect

Visitors from North India are often surprised by Kerala roads, so it helps to set expectations:

• Lower average speeds. Roads are narrower and villages run into one another, so 55 km can take ninety minutes. Our time estimates assume this.
• Speed cameras and strict enforcement. Drivers keep to the limits, and passengers should wear seat belts in front and back.
• Ghat roads. Munnar, Thekkady, Vagamon and Wayanad involve hairpin bends. The driver slows, uses horns on blind curves and stops whenever a passenger feels unwell.
• Rain. In the south-west monsoon, visibility drops and some low roads flood briefly; the driver will pause rather than push on.
• Temple and church festivals. Processions close roads for a few hours, especially around Tripunithura, Aluva and Edappally. We build buffer time around known dates.
