Chennai is a city of long straight roads and short tempers in the midday sun. The distance from a hotel on Anna Salai to an IT campus in Sholinganallur is not huge, but the heat, the crowd at every signal and the scarcity of parking in T Nagar make each separate ride feel like work. Car rental with driver in Chennai takes that work away. You book an air-conditioned car and a chauffeur by the block, 4 hours, 8 hours or a long 12-hour day, and the same driver stays with you until you are done. RutzIndia.com prices those blocks in plain rupees and bills trips beyond the city, to Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry or Tirupati, by the kilometre.
Car rental with driver in Chennai: what it costs
For car rental with driver in Chennai, a Dzire class sedan is Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve for an 8-hour, 80 km day and Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve for 4 hours and 40 km. Book an Innova Crysta and the day costs Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve. A 12-hour day starts at about Rs 12,240 Pay Now to Reserve. GST of 5% is added, and parking or tolls are charged as paid.
The rate card below leads with the two day lengths most Chennai customers choose, then shows what happens when you go beyond the kilometres or leave town.
| Car (seats) | Day of 8 hr / 80 km | Long day of 12 hr / 120 km | Each hour beyond | Each km beyond | Outstation day (250 km floor) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dzire or Aura (4) | Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 12,240 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 900 | Rs 36 | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve |
| Ertiga or Carens (6) | Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 15,180 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,140 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 42 | Rs 10,500 Pay Now to Reserve |

Chennai uses the national base rates with no city loading. A half day of 4 hours / 40 km is 60% of the full-day price, so Rs 4,320 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire and Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. When the clock passes the package, each additional hour costs about Rs 900 in a Dzire and about Rs 1,560 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta. The 12-hour column is simply the 8-hour day with four hours and 40 km of overage added, printed for convenience. All amounts exclude 5% GST.

Planning a working day on OMR, Guindy and Anna Salai
Chennai's offices cluster in a few belts: the banks and head offices along Anna Salai and in Nungambakkam, the industrial estate and the new towers around Guindy, the IT corridor on Old Mahabalipuram Road running down through Taramani, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur, and further out the automotive and electronics plants at Sriperumbudur and Oragadam. A day that touches three of those belts is exactly what time-based hire is built for.
Take an auditor who is collected from a hotel in Guindy at 8.30 am in an Innova Crysta, spends the morning at a plant in Oragadam, drives to a supplier in Ambattur after lunch and is back at the hotel by 5.30 pm. That is nine hours and about 110 km. The bill is the Rs 12,600 Pay Now to Reserve package, one hour over at about Rs 1,560 Pay Now to Reserve, and 30 km over at Rs 57.6, which is Rs 1,710 Pay Now to Reserve, making roughly Rs 15,870 Pay Now to Reserve before GST and parking. Try to do the same with separate app rides and you would spend a good part of the day waiting on the roadside outside a factory gate.
OMR has a toll plaza on parts of the corridor, and the chauffeur pays it and records it on the trip sheet. Companies that bring in teams regularly can hold a corporate car rental account with one GST invoice a month, which is far easier for finance than a stack of ride receipts.
Temples, the Marina and T Nagar with the same driver
Leisure days in Chennai follow the sun. Start early at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore before the stone floor heats up, drive to San Thome Basilica, take in Fort St George and the Government Museum at Egmore before lunch, and save the Marina and Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar for the evening sea breeze. Each of those stops has limited parking; your chauffeur drops you at the entrance and waits nearby, and your water bottles and shopping stay cool in the car.
Shopping is serious business here. Silk saris for weddings mean a long afternoon on the busy lanes of T Nagar around Ranganathan Street and Pondy Bazaar, where cars cannot stop for long. The chauffeur waits in a parking lot and meets you at a corner you agree on. Families preparing for a wedding often book a 12-hour Innova Crysta for several days in a row. For the ceremony itself, decorated cars and luxury marques are on our wedding car rental in Chennai and luxury car rental in Chennai pages, and larger family groups travel together in a Tempo Traveller in Chennai.

Practical tips for a temple day by car
Temple visits are the most common leisure booking in Chennai, and a few habits make them smoother. Many of the older temples close their inner sanctums for a few hours in the early afternoon, so plan Kapaleeshwarar in Mylapore, Parthasarathy in Triplicane and the Vadapalani Murugan temple for the morning or late afternoon, and use the middle of the day for museums, lunch or shopping. Footwear is left outside the temple; leave it in the car with the chauffeur rather than at a stall, and you walk straight back into shoes that are not scorching from the pavement.
Modest clothing is expected, and some shrines ask men to remove shirts before entering the inner sanctum. Carry a small cloth bag for flowers and prasadam, and keep water in the car, since the stone courtyards heat up fast. If your group includes elderly relatives, tell the chauffeur: he can drop you at the gate nearest the shrine, which in the older temples may not be the main entrance, and wait close by with the engine running and the air-conditioning on.
For a longer temple circuit that takes in Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur or Tirupati, see the outstation examples below, or ask the desk to plan a multi-day pilgrimage with one driver throughout.
An evening on the East Coast Road
Chennai's residents escape the city in the evenings along the East Coast Road, and a short package is the easy way to join them. DakshinaChitra at Muttukadu, a living museum of South Indian homes and crafts, is worth an afternoon; the Cholamandal Artists' Village at Injambakkam has galleries of contemporary work; and the beaches and seafood restaurants between Neelankarai and Kovalam fill up at sunset. The ECR is quick outside the weekend rush, and the chauffeur waits while you browse, eat and watch the sea, then brings you back without the search for a ride late at night.

Self-drive, autos, app cabs or a hired chauffeur?
Autos and app cabs are quick for a single short hop, and for a one-stop evening our Chennai taxi service is the simplest choice. The trouble starts with a day of stops. Each new ride means another wait in the heat, another negotiation or surge, and nowhere to leave your bags. Self-drive removes the waiting but adds a deposit, fuel, the hunt for parking near a temple or a mall, and the stress of Chennai's two-wheeler traffic.
A car with driver sits in the middle: you pay one known fare for the day, the car is there when you step outside, and you arrive without having fought the traffic yourself. For NRIs visiting family, elderly parents and first-time visitors, that predictability matters more than the last hundred rupees.
| Consideration | Self-drive | Auto or app cab | Chauffeur on a package |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midday heat between stops | You return to a car parked in the sun | You wait at the roadside | Car cooled and brought to the door |
| T Nagar and Mylapore parking | Scarce and slow | Not needed, but the next ride is uncertain | Driver waits in a lot and meets you |
| OMR toll and GST Road traffic | Your drive, your toll | Toll added per ride | Toll at cost, one driver all day |
| Flooded streets in the northeast monsoon | Risky for visitors | Rides dry up quickly | Driver reroutes, car stays with you |
| Up-front commitment | Deposit and licence | None | Fixed fare, free cancellation beyond 72 hours |
| Ideal for | Residents who know the roads | A single short hop | Temple days, family visits, business days |
Railway stations and pickups across the city
Chennai's two big terminals sit close together but serve different directions. Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central, still widely called Chennai Central, handles most trains to the north and west, while Chennai Egmore serves many southern routes towards Madurai, Tiruchi and Rameswaram. Tambaram, on the southern edge, is convenient for OMR and the airport. Give us your train and coach and the chauffeur waits at the right entrance, which at Central can save a long walk across the concourse with luggage.
Chennai is well known as a destination for medical treatment, drawing patients from other states and from abroad. The hospital districts around Greams Road, Vadapalani, Porur, Perungudi and Mylapore are spread out, and appointments tend to run across several days. Booking the same chauffeur for the whole stay gives the patient a familiar face, a car that knows the hospital entrance, and a driver who can run to the pharmacy while the family waits indoors.

Packages can start and end anywhere in Chennai and its suburbs. The places our chauffeurs collect from most often:

Weather and festivals: the northeast monsoon, Margazhi and Pongal
Chennai's heavy rain comes late in the year. From October to December the northeast monsoon can flood low-lying roads in areas such as Velachery and parts of the southern suburbs within hours, and app cabs quickly vanish. A chauffeur who knows which subways fill up first is worth having on those days, and booking the car for the whole day avoids being stranded between meetings.
December is also the Margazhi music and dance season, when the sabhas of Mylapore, Alwarpet and T Nagar fill every evening; a car that waits outside while you stay for the last concert is a quiet luxury. Pongal in mid-January brings family travel and shopping crowds, and the wedding months cluster around auspicious muhurtham dates, so reserve early if your dates fall then. April to June is the hottest stretch of the year; plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and use the afternoon for museums, shopping and the air-conditioned car.
Day trips and short tours: Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Kanchipuram, Tirupati
The East Coast Road is one of the most pleasant drives in South India, and it is where many Chennai bookings end up. Mahabalipuram, about 55 km south, is usually booked as a local day with the extra kilometres added, typically about Rs 8,280 in a Dzire, which leaves time for the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas, Arjuna's Penance and a seafood lunch.
Trips farther out switch to per-kilometre billing, where each day away is charged for at least 250 km:
- Kanchipuram temples and silk weavers in a day: roughly 150 km in all, so the one-day floor applies: 250 x Rs 36 = Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire.
- Tirupati darshan in a long day: about 270 km, so 270 x Rs 36 = Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire, plus the Andhra Pradesh permit and tolls. Leave very early; queues at Tirumala are long on weekends.
- Pondicherry for a weekend, Innova Crysta: about 300 km over two days, less than the 500 km two-day floor, so 500 x Rs 57.6 = Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve, plus the chauffeur's overnight allowance of Rs 1,500. The Chennai to Pondicherry taxi page has a one-way option if you are staying longer.
- Bangalore: most people go one way; see Bangalore to Chennai taxi, which prices the same highway in either direction.
Tolls and state permits are always charged at actual cost, and for a longer South India itinerary the outstation cabs page explains multi-day billing.
Arrivals at Chennai airport
Chennai International sits at Meenambakkam on GST Road, roughly 15 to 20 km from the city centre, and the Chennai Metro connects it to Guindy and beyond if you are travelling light. If a car with driver is meeting you, the chauffeur follows your flight, so a delay costs you nothing; after landing you get an hour free on international flights and half an hour on domestic ones before waiting starts to count. The Chennai International Airport entry lists the terminals if you need to find the right exit. For a transfer without a day's hire behind it, the Chennai airport taxi page is the cheaper route.
Booking and cancelling
The full line-up of cars is on the fleet page, and longer hire of the six-seater is covered on Innova Crysta on rent. For weddings, conferences or several cars at once, send your plan to the travel desk. Visitors from abroad will find festival dates and heritage timings on Incredible India. Pick Chennai, the day length and the car on the booker and book online; the fare is fixed before you pay by card or UPI, and a GSTIN on the booking produces a proper tax invoice. The chauffeur's name and number plate are sent the day before. Cars are never more than four model years old, except Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, which may be up to seven. The Ertiga on rent page has more on that model if you are weighing it against an Innova.
Cancelling costs nothing until 72 hours before pickup. After that the fee climbs in three steps, 10%, then 50% once you are inside 48 hours, then the whole fare inside 24 hours or on a no-show, as set out in our cancellation policy.
