Kolkata still has its yellow Ambassador taxis, its trams and its hand-pulled rickshaws, and it also has some of the most tangled traffic in eastern India. If you have one journey to make, any of those will do. If you have a day of errands between Salt Lake, Park Street, Burrabazar and Howrah, or a family to take around the pandals during Durga Puja, car rental with driver in Kolkata is the calmer answer. RutzIndia.com lets you hold one air-conditioned car and one chauffeur for 4 hours, 8 hours or 12 hours at a fixed rupee price, and switches to kilometre billing only when you set off for Digha, Shantiniketan or the Sundarbans.
Car rental with driver in Kolkata: the price
In Kolkata, a Dzire with chauffeur costs Rs 6,840 Pay Now to Reserve for 8 hours / 80 km and Rs 4,110 Pay Now to Reserve for 4 hours / 40 km. A 12-hour day in the same car is Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve. An Innova Crysta is Rs 11,970 Pay Now to Reserve for a full day. Figures are before 5% GST, with parking and bridge or highway tolls charged at actual cost.
Kolkata's rates sit 5% below the national base, which makes it one of the better-value metros for chauffeur hire. The table sets out the three day lengths and the per-km charge that applies once you pass the included distance.
| Car | Short hire, 4 hr / 40 km | Standard day, 8 hr / 80 km | Long day, 12 hr / 120 km | Beyond the included hours | Beyond the included km |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dzire, Amaze or Aura | Rs 4,110 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 6,840 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 11,700 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 840 an hour | Rs 36 a km |
| Ertiga or Carens | Rs 5,130 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 14,520 Pay Now to Reserve | Rs 1,080 an hour | Rs 42 a km |

Every figure is a planning fare in rupees before 5% GST. Time beyond the booked package is charged per hour at the class rate: about Rs 840 in a Dzire, Rs 1,500 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta and Rs 4,440 Pay Now to Reserve in an E-Class. The 12-hour prices are the 8-hour package plus four of those hours and 40 km at the per-km rate, rounded to the nearest ten rupees.

Durga Puja pandal hopping by car
For five days every autumn, Kolkata becomes an open-air art gallery, and the city's roads change completely. Streets around the big pandals in north and south Kolkata turn one-way or close to cars after dark, police set up diversions, and crowds move on foot until dawn. Families who try to do the pandals by app cab spend hours looking for a ride that will accept a trip into the crush. A car with a chauffeur changes the evening: he drops you as close as the police allow, parks where he can, and meets you at an agreed point after each pandal.
Most Puja bookings are 12-hour Innova Crystas starting in the late afternoon and running past midnight, because a group of six can stay together and the car becomes a base for water, snacks and tired children. A typical north-to-south circuit covers Bagbazar and Kumartuli, the College Square and Md. Ali Park area, then south to Ekdalia, Suruchi Sangha and Tridhara, with a detour to Salt Lake's blocks on the way home. Distances are modest; the clock is what you are buying. Reserve as early as possible, because Puja week, along with Kali Puja and Diwali just after, is the busiest time of year for chauffeur hire in the city.
Office days in Salt Lake Sector V, New Town and Park Street
Kolkata's business map has shifted east. The IT and services offices sit in Salt Lake Sector V and the newer towers of New Town and Rajarhat, while banks, law firms and older trading houses remain around Dalhousie, BBD Bagh, Camac Street and Park Street. Burrabazar and Posta handle wholesale trade across the river from Howrah. A consultant or auditor moving between those in a day covers perhaps 50 to 70 km, but the EM Bypass and the crawl near Sealdah and Burrabazar make it a long day.
A worked example: an Innova Crysta collects a visiting team at a New Town hotel at 9 am, runs to Sector V, Camac Street and a warehouse near Howrah, and returns them at 7 pm after 94 km. Ten hours against the package of eight adds two hours at about Rs 1,500 each; 94 km against 80 adds 14 km at Rs 57.6, which is Rs 800. With the Rs 11,970 Pay Now to Reserve package, the day comes to about Rs 15,770 Pay Now to Reserve before GST, bridge tolls and parking. Companies can put this on a corporate car rental account and get one GST invoice for the month; long assignments are better on monthly car rental with driver.

A heritage day: Victoria Memorial to Dakshineswar
A full sightseeing day in Kolkata is easy to fit inside 8 hours / 80 km. Start at the Victoria Memorial when it opens, walk the Maidan edge to St Paul's Cathedral, then head north through the old city to the Marble Palace and the clay-idol workshops of Kumartuli. Cross the Hooghly over Howrah Bridge for the flower market at Mallick Ghat, then continue to Belur Math and, across the Vivekananda Setu, the Dakshineswar Kali temple. Finish with an evening at Park Street for dinner, and the chauffeur drops you at your hotel.
Every one of those stops has difficult parking and heavy footfall. With a hired car the driver handles the waiting while you take your time. For groups of eight or more, including school and college alumni visits, one Tempo Traveller in Kolkata keeps everyone together.
Winter in the city: Christmas, the Book Fair and Poush
Kolkata's cool season, from late November to February, is its busiest time for chauffeur hire after the Pujas. Christmas week turns Park Street and Allen Park into a festival of lights, and the roads around them are packed every evening until New Year; a car that drops you at the corner of Park Street and waits in a side lane is far easier than finding a taxi at midnight. The Kolkata International Book Fair, usually held in late January and early February at Central Park in Salt Lake, draws huge weekend crowds, and families often book a 4-hour package to cover the fair and dinner. Poush Mela at Shantiniketan in December makes the outstation day trip described below a popular winter outing.
Weddings cluster in the same months, with receptions at the large hotels on the EM Bypass, in New Town and at heritage clubs in central Kolkata. For family members who need to move between the bride's and groom's homes, the venue and the airport over several days, a 12-hour Innova Crysta on rent keeps elders and gifts together.

Mornings at Kalighat and Dakshineswar with elders
Two of the city's most visited temples are at opposite ends of Kolkata: Kalighat in the south and Dakshineswar on the river in the north. Queues at both are longest on weekends and festival days, and the lanes near the gates are crowded with flower sellers and pilgrims. A chauffeur can drop elderly relatives at the nearest point, wait while they queue, and bring the car back to the gate when they are done, so no one has to walk far in the heat. Many families combine Dakshineswar with Belur Math across the river by road over the Bally bridge area, then return south for lunch, all well within an 8-hour package.
Combining the Metro, ferries and trams with a hired car
Kolkata has some of the oldest public transport in India, and a hired car works well alongside it. The Metro, now running under the Hooghly to Howrah, is quick for a single journey across the city, the river ferries between Howrah and the ghats of north Kolkata are a pleasure in the cool months, and a ride on one of the remaining tram routes is an experience in itself. A chauffeur can drop you at one end, drive round and meet you at the other, so you enjoy the ride without being stranded afterwards. A 4-hour package suits these half-day outings well.
Chauffeur, yellow taxi, app cab or self-drive?
Yellow taxis and app cabs are the right tool for single trips; our own Kolkata taxi service covers those at fixed fares. Refusals, meter disputes and surge pricing become a nuisance only when you need several legs in a day. Self-drive exists in Kolkata but is rarely chosen by visitors: the one-way systems that switch direction at different times of day, the trams on some routes, the crowds near markets and the shortage of parking make it hard work.
Time-based hire is worth it when your day has three or more stops, a wait of more than an hour, or older family members who should not stand on the kerb in the heat or rain. You pay one fare, your bags stay in the car and the day follows your pace.
| For a Kolkata day with several stops | Self-drive | Yellow taxi or app cab | RutzIndia.com chauffeur package |

Howrah, Sealdah and the other stations
Many visitors reach Kolkata by train, and the city's stations are spread across both banks of the Hooghly. Howrah, across the river, is one of the busiest railway stations in India and handles most long-distance trains to the west and south; the pickup area outside can be chaotic, so tell us the platform side and the chauffeur will wait at the agreed point. Sealdah, on the east bank near College Street, serves trains to north Bengal and the suburbs. Kolkata station at Chitpur, Shalimar and Santragachi handle other long-distance services. A package that starts at the station, drops bags at a Park Street hotel and continues into a day of meetings is often better value than a string of taxis.
Areas we cover across Kolkata and Howrah
Packages can start and end at any address in the city, Salt Lake, New Town and Howrah. Frequent pickups include:
- Central: Park Street, Camac Street, Chowringhee, Esplanade, Dalhousie and BBD Bagh, Bowbazar, Burrabazar

- East: Salt Lake Sectors I to V, Lake Town, New Town, Rajarhat, the EM Bypass hotels

For a single ride between these, a Kolkata taxi service booking is enough; for a drop in another town without the car waiting, see one way taxi.

Airport arrivals at Dum Dum
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is in the north-east of the city on VIP Road, close to New Town and Salt Lake and roughly 15 to 20 km from Park Street, depending on the route. The airport's details are useful for checking the terminal. When a chauffeur meets you, he follows the flight's progress and carries a board with your name; after landing, international passengers have 60 free minutes and domestic passengers 30, after which the waiting time counts at the car's hourly rate. For a transfer on its own, see airport taxi.
Out of Kolkata: Digha, Shantiniketan, the Sundarbans and Mandarmani
Trips outside the city are billed on kilometres, and a round trip is charged for no fewer than 250 km on each calendar day. Tolls on the highways and bridges are passed on at cost. When you stay overnight, a chauffeur allowance of Rs 1,500 per night covers his meals and bed. Examples before GST:
- Shantiniketan for the day in a Dzire: about 320 km there and back, so 320 x Rs 36 = Rs 11,520 Pay Now to Reserve. Visit on a weekday if you want the campus quiet, or around Poush Mela in December if you want the festival.
- Sundarbans gateway at Godkhali or Sonakhali: roughly 100 km each way. As a one-day drop-and-return, the 250 km floor applies, so Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a Dzire; many visitors instead book a one way taxi out and another back after the boat tour.
- Digha for two days in a Dzire: about 370 km in total, below the 500 km two-day floor, so 500 x Rs 36 = Rs 18,000 plus one night's allowance.
- Mandarmani weekend in an Innova Crysta: about 360 km over two days, billed at the floor of 500 km: 500 x Rs 57.6 = Rs 28,500 plus one night for the driver.
Longer journeys into Odisha or Jharkhand need interstate permits, which are added at cost; the outstation cabs page explains multi-day billing across states.
Weddings, luxury and larger groups
Bengali weddings run through the winter months, and receptions in the big hotels along the EM Bypass and in New Town keep chauffeurs busy into the night. Decorated cars and the premium fleet are on wedding car rental and luxury car rental, and a six-seater with room for elders and gifts is described on Innova Crysta on rent. Every car we supply is within four model years; the three exceptions are Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach, allowed up to seven years because they are kept for ceremonies.
Booking and changes
Every car class is on the fleet page, and multi-car plans for weddings or conferences are quoted by the travel desk. International visitors can check festival dates on Incredible India before fixing Puja-week plans. Book online by choosing Kolkata, the package and the car. You see the price before paying by card or UPI, and a GSTIN on the booking gives you a proper tax invoice. The chauffeur's details arrive the evening before. If your plans change, nothing is charged when you cancel with more than three days to go; the retention then rises to a tenth of the fare, to half inside two days and to the full amount inside the final day or on a no-show. Details are on the cancellation policy page.
