How do you get to McLeodganj by road, and what does a taxi cost?
McLeodganj sits about 9 km above Dharamshala and roughly 245 km from Chandigarh, typically 6 to 6.5 hours by car via Ropar, Una and Kangra. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 8,820 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 13,970 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. From Kangra airport at Gaggal, a sedan transfer costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve.
Arriving in McLeodganj feels like crossing a border without showing a passport. One moment you are winding up through the pine and rhododendron above Dharamshala; the next, the lanes are strung with prayer flags, maroon-robed monks are walking to the temple, and the smell of butter tea and fresh momos drifts out of doorways. Since 1960, this former British cantonment on the ridge of upper Dharamshala has been the home of the 14th Dalai Lama and the centre of the Tibetan community in exile, which is why many people call it Little Lhasa.
It is also a small, steep, congested town where two lanes carry nearly all the traffic and parking is scarce. That combination makes a chauffeur worth having: someone who knows the one-way loops, where to drop you near the temple and where a car can actually wait. RutzIndia.com runs McLeodganj trips from Chandigarh, Delhi and Amritsar, plus transfers from Kangra airport and Pathankot, with drivers who handle the Kangra hills regularly. This guide covers the routes, the season, the fares, what to see and how to plan three days. When you are ready, book online.

What to see and do in McLeodganj
Tsuglagkhang complex. The main temple, directly opposite the Dalai Lama's residence, holds large images of the Buddha, Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava, and the courtyard is the setting for public teachings when His Holiness is in residence. The Namgyal Monastery shares the complex, and in the afternoons you may see monks debating in the courtyard, with emphatic hand-claps punctuating each point. Teaching schedules are posted on the official Dalai Lama website.
Tibet Museum. Also inside the complex, the museum tells the story of Tibet's recent history and the journey into exile through photographs, documents and testimonies. Check current opening days on the Tibet Museum website.
Bhagsunag and Dharamkot. A short drive or a 2 km walk east, the Bhagsunag temple and its waterfall are popular with families; above them, the village of Dharamkot has cafes, meditation centres and forest paths with views over the Kangra valley.
St John in the Wilderness. A stone church from the 1850s in a deodar forest on the road between Dharamshala and McLeodganj, with Belgian stained glass. Lord Elgin, a Viceroy of India who died in the district in 1863, is buried in its churchyard.
Naddi and the Dal lake. The small lake surrounded by deodars and the Naddi viewpoint above it are the classic sunset spots, looking straight at the Dhauladhar peaks.
Triund. The most famous day hike in Himachal starts above McLeodganj. The trail climbs roughly 7 to 9 km, depending on where you start, to an open meadow beneath the snowline. Your driver can drop you at the trailhead above Dharamkot or Galu Devi temple to save the first steep kilometres.
Tibetan food and crafts. Thukpa, thenthuk, tingmo, momos and butter tea; carpets, thangka paintings and singing bowls in the Temple Road shops. Buy from the cooperative stores if you want to support Tibetan artisans directly.
Further afield. Down the hill are the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the HPCA cricket stadium and the Kangra fort. About 15 km away at Sidhbari, the Norbulingka Institute preserves Tibetan arts with workshops and a serene Japanese-style garden. For the lower town, see our Dharamshala by road guide.
The road to McLeodganj
From Chandigarh (about 245 km, 6 to 6.5 hours). The quickest route leaves the Tricity through Kharar and Ropar, runs along the Sutlej to Nangal, then enters Himachal at Una. From Una the road climbs through Amb, Mubarakpur and Dehra to Kangra, then Dharamshala and the final 9 km of switchbacks to McLeodganj. The road is mostly two-lane and fairly good; Una and Kangra are the natural tea stops.
From Delhi (about 480 km, 10 to 11 hours). Drive up NH44 past Karnal and Ambala, then either via Chandigarh and Una, or on to Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur before climbing into Kangra district. An early start matters: leave Delhi by 5 am to reach the hills before dark.
From Amritsar (about 200 km, 5 hours). Via Gurdaspur or Batala to Pathankot, then Nurpur and Kangra. This makes a natural pairing with the Golden Temple; see our Amritsar taxi service and Delhi to Amritsar taxi pages.
By air and rail. Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 18 to 20 km, around 45 minutes, from McLeodganj. Pathankot is the nearest broad-gauge railhead, about 90 km away. We track flights, meet you with a name board and wait 30 minutes free after a domestic landing, then bill further waiting at the hourly rate. Low cloud sometimes diverts or cancels Gaggal flights, so keep road options open.
Inside McLeodganj, traffic moves on short one-way loops along Temple Road and Jogiwara Road, and the main square jams at weekends. Your chauffeur will drop you close to where you are going and wait in the town's parking areas. In some Himachal towns local taxi unions reserve particular sightseeing runs for local cabs; if that happens, your driver will explain and our desk will help you work around it.

Best time to visit McLeodganj
- March to June: pleasant days, cool nights and clear views of the Dhauladhar early in the season; May and June weekends are busy with visitors escaping the plains' heat.
- July to September: Dharamshala is among the wettest places in Himachal, and the monsoon brings very heavy rain, mist and occasional landslides. It is atmospheric, but plan flexibly.
- October to December: crisp and clear, with the best mountain views and good hiking weather. Nights turn cold from November.
- January and February: cold, sometimes with snow on the upper town and fresh snow on the peaks; Losar, the Tibetan new year, usually falls in February or March.
Public teachings by the Dalai Lama draw thousands of visitors and fill every guesthouse, so if your dates coincide, book rooms and cars well in advance. For district notices, see the Kangra district administration, and for state-level travel information, Himachal Tourism.

Day 2: The Tibetan heart and the hills (about 25 km of driving). Morning at the Tsuglagkhang and the Tibet Museum. Alternatively, spend the whole day hiking to Triund and back, with the car dropping you at the trailhead.
Day 3: Norbulingka, Kangra fort and onwards (about 60 to 260 km). Visit Norbulingka at Sidhbari in the morning and the Kangra fort around midday. Either return to Chandigarh, or continue 50 to 60 km east to the tea gardens of Palampur, or to the paragliding hills of Bir Billing for another night.
Practical tips for McLeodganj
- Book rooms first: guesthouses fill quickly in May, June, October and during teachings.
- Parking and drop points: the lanes near the main square are narrow; accept the driver's suggested drop point rather than insisting on the door.
- Temple etiquette: walk clockwise around shrines and stupas, dress modestly, and check whether photography is allowed inside.
- Rain gear: carry a compact umbrella or rain jacket from June to September; downpours arrive suddenly.
- Altitude and cold: McLeodganj is around 2,000 metres, so evenings are cool even in summer. Pack layers.
- Cash and cards: ATMs are in the main square and in Dharamshala; smaller cafes may prefer cash or UPI.
