Dharamshala spreads down a forested spur of the Dhauladhar range in the Kangra valley, and it is really two towns in one. Lower Dharamshala is the district's busy administrative centre; Upper Dharamshala, better known as McLeod Ganj, is home to the Dalai Lama's residence and the Central Tibetan Administration, with monasteries, prayer flags and cafes stacked up the hillside. Around them lie tea estates, ancient temples, a fort that is among India's oldest, and trails that climb straight towards the snowline. Most visitors reach Dharamshala by road from Chandigarh, Amritsar or Delhi. This guide covers each route, the RutzIndia.com fares for 2026, what to see, the seasons and festivals, practical rules for McLeod Ganj's narrow lanes, and a four-day Kangra valley plan.
Dharamshala by road: distance, time and fare
Dharamshala is about 240 km from Chandigarh via Una and Kangra, typically 6 to 7 hours by car; Amritsar is about 200 km away and Delhi about 475 km. A one-way sedan from Chandigarh costs Rs 8,640 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova Crysta Rs 13,680 Pay Now to Reserve; from Amritsar a sedan is Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve. Fares exclude 5% GST, tolls and entry tax.
Charges are worked out from the distance and the car you pick: a compact sedan is Rs 36 a kilometre, an Ertiga Rs 42, an Innova Rs 57.6 and a Tempo Traveller Rs 78. When the car stays with you and brings you back, the bill uses whichever is larger, the kilometres actually covered or a floor of 250 km for every calendar day. Four days out of Chandigarh, including local trips around the valley, therefore bill at a minimum of 1,000 km. From Delhi, a one-way sedan is about Rs 17,100 Pay Now to Reserve and an Innova about Rs 27,070 Pay Now to Reserve. Tolls on the plains, Himachal's entry tax for cars from other states and parking in McLeod Ganj are re-billed exactly as receipted. For pickups in the city beforehand, see our Chandigarh taxi service or, if you are coming from Punjab, the Amritsar taxi service.

What to see in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj
The Tsuglagkhang complex
The main temple complex in McLeod Ganj faces the Dalai Lama's residence. It includes the Tsuglagkhang temple, the Namgyal monastery, where monks debate in the courtyard in the afternoons, and the Tibet Museum, which tells the story of the Tibetan community in exile. Walk the kora, the circuit path around the complex, with its prayer wheels and views down the valley. The Central Tibetan Administration publishes news and announcements, including public teachings, which draw large crowds.
Bhagsunag and the waterfall
A short walk or drive from McLeod Ganj, the Bhagsunag temple has a spring-fed pool and a trail to a waterfall that is at its best after the monsoon. The village has cafes and guesthouses popular with long-stay visitors.
St John in the Wilderness
This stone church of the mid-nineteenth century stands in deodar forest between Lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, with Belgian stained glass and a quiet graveyard. It is one of the most atmospheric colonial-era buildings in Himachal.
The cricket stadium
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium, with the snowy Dhauladhar behind the stands, is one of the world's most scenic grounds and hosts international matches. On non-match days visitors can often look around; check timings locally.
Triund and the Dhauladhar trails
The trek to Triund ridge, roughly 9 km each way from McLeod Ganj via Galu Devi temple, is the classic day or overnight hike, with a close-up view of the Dhauladhar wall. Go with a local guide if you are unsure, and start early.
Around the Kangra valley
- Norbulingka Institute: a centre for Tibetan arts and crafts in landscaped gardens below Dharamshala.
- Kangra Fort: about 20 km away, a vast hilltop fort with a long history of sieges.
- Chamunda Devi: an important temple on the Baner river, about 15 km from Dharamshala.
- Palampur: tea gardens and colonial bungalows about 35 km east.
- Masroor: rock-cut temples carved from a single sandstone ridge, about 40 km away.
- Bir Billing: India's best-known paragliding site, about 65 km east; see our Bir Billing by road guide.
The Kangra district administration lists official tourist sites, notices and weather advisories. For a wider overview, the Dharamshala article on Wikipedia is a helpful starting point.
The routes: Chandigarh, Amritsar and Delhi
From Chandigarh (about 240 km). The usual route runs via Ropar and Nangal to Una in Himachal, then through Amb and the lower Kangra hills to Kangra and up to Dharamshala. It is a mix of good plains highway and winding two-lane hill road, with the last hour climbing steadily. Una and Kangra are good lunch stops. Allow 6 to 7 hours.
From Amritsar (about 200 km). Via Batala or Gurdaspur to Pathankot, then into Himachal through Nurpur and the Kangra valley. It is a pleasant, less hilly route, typically 5 hours. Many travellers pair the Golden Temple with the hills; see our Amritsar by road guide.
From Delhi (about 475 km). NH-44 north through Panipat and Ambala towards Chandigarh or Jalandhar, then either the Una or the Pathankot route. It is a long day of 10 to 11 hours; many travellers break it in Chandigarh or Amritsar.
Driving up to McLeod Ganj. The roads between Lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are steep and narrow, with one-way loops through the town and very limited parking. Our chauffeurs drop you at the square or your hotel and use the town's paid parking. Local sightseeing within McLeod Ganj is often easiest on foot.
Rail and air links. Pathankot is the nearest major railhead, about 90 km away, and the narrow-gauge Kangra valley line runs from Pathankot through the hills. The Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 13 km from Dharamshala.

Best time to visit
- March to June. Clear skies and warm days, with snow still on the Dhauladhar. Popular with families and trekkers; May weekends are busy.
- July to September. The Kangra valley receives some of the heaviest rainfall in Himachal. Waterfalls roar, but landslides are common and treks become slippery and risky.
- October to December. Crisp, clear days and the best mountain views. Tibetan cultural events and public teachings are sometimes scheduled in this season; the Dharamshala International Film Festival has usually been held in the autumn.
- January to February. Cold, with occasional snow in McLeod Ganj and heavy snow on Triund. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, usually falls in February or March.

Day 4: Back to Chandigarh (about 240 km), or on to Bir or Dalhousie.

Practical tips
- Walking shoes. McLeod Ganj is steep; most exploring is on foot.
- Parking and traffic. Weekends and teaching days are crowded; your chauffeur will suggest the best drop points.
- Respect monastery etiquette. Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, dress modestly and ask before photographing monks.
- Rain gear. Even outside the monsoon, afternoon showers are common.
- Altitude. McLeod Ganj is around 2,000 metres; Triund is higher. Take it easy on the first day.
- Food. Try thukpa, momos and Tibetan bread in McLeod Ganj, and Himachali dham if you find it.
- Shopping ethically. Tibetan handicraft cooperatives and the Norbulingka shop sell carpets, thangkas and woodwork made on site; buying there supports the artisans directly.
- Teachings and crowds. When public teachings are announced, hotels in McLeod Ganj fill quickly and traffic on the Temple Road slows to a crawl. Check the schedule before you fix dates, and allow your chauffeur extra time for drop-offs.
- Road from Amritsar. Travellers arriving by our Delhi to Amritsar taxi can continue to Dharamshala after a night in the city, turning one long drive into two comfortable ones.
