Bir Billing by road: how far, how long and how much?
Bir is about 260 km from Chandigarh, usually 6.5 to 7 hours via the Kiratpur–Mandi highway and Jogindernagar. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 9,360 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 14,820 Pay Now to Reserve with RutzIndia.com, before 5% GST. From Kangra's Gaggal airport, about 65 km away, a sedan transfer is Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies).
Bir Billing is really two places joined by a mountain road. Bir, at roughly 1,400 metres on the floor of the Kangra valley, is a relaxed village of Tibetan monasteries, tea gardens, cafés and guesthouses, and it is where paragliders land. Billing, about 14 km up a steep, winding road at roughly 2,400 metres, is the grassy launch ridge. Between them lies some of the most reliable flying air in the world: steady thermals along the Dhauladhar range have made the area a favourite of international pilots and it hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015.
You do not have to fly to enjoy Bir, though most first-timers end up trying a tandem. The village has a gentle rhythm of monastery bells, long breakfasts and walks through tea bushes, and it sits within easy driving distance of Baijnath's medieval temple, Palampur's tea estates and the Barot valley. The drive from the plains is long, which is why a comfortable car and a driver who does not mind the Mandi hills make all the difference.

Things to do in and around Bir
- Tandem paragliding. Flights take off from Billing and land in Bir's landing field, with flight times that vary with conditions and the package you choose. Fly only with operators and pilots registered with the Himachal tourism authorities, and ask to see the registration and the equipment before you pay. Operators set their own prices.
- The Billing road. Even if you do not fly, the drive up to the launch site through rhododendron and oak forest is spectacular, with the valley spread below and gliders circling at eye level.
- Chokling Monastery. The heart of Bir's Tibetan colony, with a large stupa and a colourful prayer hall. Visitors are welcome to walk around quietly.
- Sherab Ling and other monasteries. Sherab Ling, a larger monastic seat in the forest a short drive away, and several smaller gompas around Bir can be visited respectfully outside prayer times.
- Deer Park Institute. A centre for the study of classical Indian wisdom traditions, housed in a peaceful garden campus, with talks and courses open to the public.
- Baijnath temple. About 15 km from Bir, this stone Shiva temple dates from the early thirteenth century and is a protected monument, one of the finest in the Kangra valley.
- Palampur and its tea gardens. Roughly 35 km away, with walks through the estates and a tea factory or two.
- Barot valley. A quieter valley on the Uhl river beyond Jogindernagar, with trout, forest and a small reservoir; a lovely half-day drive.
- Kangra Valley Railway. The narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Jogindernagar passes close to Bir at Ahju station; a short ride on it is a slow, charming side trip.
Cafés in Bir serve everything from Tibetan thukpa and laphing to wood-fired pizza and good coffee, and the monasteries' kitchens sometimes sell simple meals.
The drive from Chandigarh
The usual route: Kiratpur, Mandi and Jogindernagar
Leave Chandigarh through Kharar and Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib, where you join the highway north towards Himachal. The new four-lane to Ner Chowk, with long tunnels and bridges, has cut this section's time significantly and has tolls that we pass on at actual cost. From Ner Chowk you reach Mandi, the natural lunch stop on the Beas, then climb west through Jogindernagar on the Mandi–Pathankot highway to the Bir turn-off. The final stretch into Bir village is a short, narrow local road.
From Delhi
Bir is roughly 500 km from Delhi. The practical plan is either an overnight road journey starting in the late evening, or a two-day drive with a night in Chandigarh or Mandi. A sedan one way at Rs 36 per km costs about Rs 18,000; an Innova Crysta about Rs 28,500 Pay Now to Reserve. Our Delhi to Chandigarh taxi page covers the first leg if you want to break the trip.
From Dharamshala and Kasol
Bir is about 70 km from Dharamshala along the Kangra valley, roughly 2 hours, which makes the two an easy pairing; see our Dharamshala by road guide. Kasol and the Parvati valley are about 150 km east via Mandi and Bhuntar, explained in our Kasol by road guide.
Flying in: Kangra airport at Gaggal is the nearest, about 65 km from Bir. Our chauffeur tracks the flight and waits with a name board; the first 60 minutes after an international arrival and 30 minutes after a domestic arrival are free, with the hourly rate after that. Chandigarh is the alternative for more frequent flights.

When to go to Bir Billing
- October and November: the prime flying season. Stable weather, clear skies and the best thermals. Book accommodation and cars early, especially around Diwali.
- March to May: the second flying season, with spring warmth and good conditions. Afternoons can bring stronger winds.
- Mid-July to mid-September: the monsoon. Commercial paragliding is normally suspended in Himachal through the rainy months, and the highways through Mandi can see landslides. Bir is lush and quiet, but not for flying.
- December to February: cold, crisp and clear, with snow on the Dhauladhar and occasional snow at Billing itself, which can close the upper road. Flying is possible on some winter days.
The Kangra district administration site carries local notices, and Himachal Tourism lists information on adventure-sports regulation and state-run properties in the valley. Always confirm flying status with your operator the evening before.

A three-day Bir itinerary by car
- Day 1: Chandigarh to Bir (about 260 km). Leave by 6 am, breakfast around Kiratpur, lunch in Mandi, and reach Bir by mid-afternoon. Walk around the Tibetan colony and Chokling Monastery before sunset, when the last gliders drift in to land.
- Day 2: Fly and explore (about 60 km). Drive up to Billing in the morning for your tandem flight or simply to watch launches, then visit Baijnath temple and Sherab Ling. Evening in Bir's cafés.
- Day 3: Palampur and home (about 300 km). A morning in Palampur's tea gardens, then back to Chandigarh via Mandi, arriving by night. If you prefer, spend the night in Dharamshala instead and return the next day.
Travelling with a group of twelve or more? A 17-seat Tempo Traveller keeps everyone together; ask us to plan the Billing climb in smaller cars if the road is busy that day.
Adding a fourth day
Four days let you slow right down. Spend the extra day on the Barot valley, with a picnic by the Uhl river and the drive back through Jogindernagar's pine slopes, or head to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj for the Dalai Lama temple complex and a night on the hill. Remember the billing arithmetic: a fourth calendar day raises the minimum to 1,000 km, so a longer loop costs little extra per kilometre actually driven.
Practical tips for Bir Billing
- Parking: Bir's lanes are narrow. Guesthouses often have a few spaces; otherwise your driver uses the landing-field area or a roadside spot as directed. At Billing, parking is limited and gets crowded on peak flying days.
- Local taxi rules: local operators run shared jeeps up to Billing and may have designated stands. Your booked car remains at your disposal, but on some days the Billing road may be managed for congestion; your chauffeur will follow local instructions.
- Flying safety: check the operator's registration and insurance cover, ask about the pilot's experience, and never fly in doubtful weather to keep a schedule.
- What to pack: layers, a windproof jacket for Billing, sunglasses and sunscreen. Evenings are cool even in May.
- Respect the monasteries: dress modestly, walk clockwise around stupas and ask before photographing monks.
- Cash and signal: Bir has ATMs and mobile coverage, but keep some cash for small cafés and entry donations.
