How far is Palampur by road, and what does a chauffeur-driven cab cost?
Plan on roughly 250 km and six and a half hours from Chandigarh to Palampur, driving through Una and Kangra; Kangra airport at Gaggal is only about 40 km away. Our sedan fare is Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve one way, the Innova Crysta Rs 14,250 Pay Now to Reserve and a sedan airport transfer Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve, all before 5% GST, with tolls and parking billed as incurred.
Of all the towns in the Kangra valley, Palampur is the one that feels most like a garden. Tea bushes run in neat green rows right up to the edge of town, pine and deodar climb the slopes above them, and on a clear day the whole scene is backed by the Dhauladhar, a sheer ridge that holds snow well into spring. The pace is gentle, the air is soft, and the drives in every direction lead to something worth stopping for: a medieval Shiva temple, a village of potters and painters, a Tibetan monastery, a paragliding take-off.
Palampur is also spread out, and its best corners sit 10 to 30 km apart on hill roads with patchy public transport. That is where a car with a driver earns its keep. RutzIndia.com sends sedans, Innovas and Tempo Travellers to Palampur from Chandigarh, Delhi and Amritsar, and meets flights at Kangra airport, with chauffeurs familiar with the valley's roads. This guide covers why to go, the routes in, the seasons, the fares and a three-day plan. When you are ready, book online.

Why Palampur is worth the drive
Kangra tea. Tea has been grown on these slopes since the mid-nineteenth century, and Kangra tea carries a Geographical Indication. Its green and black teas are lighter and more delicate than the Assam brews most Indians drink every morning. Several gardens and factories around the town welcome visitors in the plucking season, roughly March to October, and you can buy fresh leaf directly. A slow walk along the estate roads at golden hour, with pickers moving between the rows, is Palampur's signature experience.
Neugal Khad and Bundla. Two streams cut deep, rocky gorges on either side of town. At Neugal the state tourism corporation runs a cafe on the edge of the gorge with a direct view of the Dhauladhar; Bundla's chasm and falls are most dramatic in and just after the monsoon.
Saurabh Van Vihar. A landscaped forest park on the banks of the Neugal, named in memory of Captain Saurabh Kalia, a Palampur officer who fell in the Kargil conflict of 1999. Good for families, with shaded paths and a small lake.
Baijnath temple (about 16 km). A stone Shiva temple in the Nagara style, dated by its inscriptions to the early thirteenth century and still in active worship. Its carved panels and setting beside the Binwa river make it one of the finest early temples in Himachal. It is a protected monument; see the Archaeological Survey of India for heritage information.
Andretta (about 13 km). A small village settled from the 1930s by Irish-born theatre pioneer Norah Richards and later home to the painter Sobha Singh, whose gallery is open to visitors. Andretta's pottery studio runs short workshops, and the village remains a quiet, creative place.
Tashi Jong and Bir. The Tibetan monastery at Tashi Jong sits in a pretty village a short drive west, and Bir Billing, famous for paragliding, is about 35 km away; see our Bir Billing by road guide.
Spring tulips. In recent years, CSIR's Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology in Palampur has opened its tulip beds to visitors in March and April; check dates and access on the institute website before planning around it.
The routes into Palampur
From Chandigarh via Una and Kangra (about 250 km, 6 to 6.5 hours). Leave the Tricity through Kharar and Ropar, follow the Sutlej to Nangal, cross into Himachal at Una, then climb through Amb, Mubarakpur and Dehra to Kangra. From Kangra, the road runs east through Nagrota Bagwan to Palampur. This is also the road to Dharamshala, so it can be busy in season.
From Chandigarh via Hamirpur (similar distance). An alternative branches from Una towards Nadaun on the Beas, then climbs through Hamirpur and Sujanpur Tira, known for its old Katoch palace and a big Holi fair, before reaching Palampur from the south. Your chauffeur will choose between the two depending on road works and traffic.
From Delhi (about 500 km, 10 to 11 hours). Take NH44 to Ambala and continue via Chandigarh and Una, or via Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Leave Delhi early to finish the hill section in daylight; our Delhi to Chandigarh taxi page covers the first leg if you prefer to break the journey.
From Amritsar or Pathankot (about 210 km / 120 km). Via Pathankot, Nurpur and Kangra, a scenic route through the lower Kangra hills.
By air or rail. Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 40 km, roughly an hour, from Palampur. Pathankot is the nearest broad-gauge station. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway from Pathankot to Jogindernagar passes through the Palampur area and is a lovely slow ride when services are running; check the current status before planning around it.
For flights into Gaggal, the chauffeur follows your flight status and stands at arrivals holding your name. The first half hour after a domestic touchdown is free; longer waits are charged by the hour. Hill-road manners apply throughout: uphill traffic first on narrow bends, horns at blind corners and no hurry.

Best time to visit Palampur
- March to June: the classic season. Spring brings blossom and the first flush of tea; April to June is warm by day and cool at night, with the Dhauladhar still carrying snow early on.
- July to September: heavy monsoon rain turns the gardens intensely green and fills the gorges and waterfalls, but landslides can close roads for hours. Travel with flexible dates.
- October and November: clear skies, crisp air and some of the best mountain views of the year; tea plucking winds down by late autumn.
- December to February: cold, sometimes frosty mornings, snow on the peaks and occasionally on higher villages. Quiet and beautiful for those who pack warm.
Holi at Sujanpur, Shivratri at Baijnath and the Navratri fairs at the nearby Chamunda Devi temple draw large crowds. Fair dates and local advisories appear on the Kangra district website; the state's own tourism portal lists festivals and HPTDC properties in the valley.

A three-day Palampur plan by car
Day 1: Chandigarh to Palampur (about 250 km). Set off around seven, stop for parathas near Una and a late lunch at Nagrota Bagwan, and be at the hotel by about three. Late-afternoon walk through a tea estate, then tea and pakoras at Neugal with the mountains turning pink at sunset.
Day 2: Baijnath, Tashi Jong and Bir (about 90 km). Morning darshan and photographs at Baijnath, then west to the Tashi Jong monastery. Continue to Bir to watch the paragliders land in the afternoon, or take a tandem flight if the weather allows. Back to Palampur for dinner.
Day 3: Andretta and onwards (about 20 to 270 km). A slow morning at the Sobha Singh gallery and the Andretta pottery, then either return to Chandigarh, continue about 50 km west to McLeodganj, or head east over the hills towards the quiet valley of Barot.
Practical tips for Palampur
- Tea visits: factories run on the plucking and processing schedule, so call ahead or ask your hotel before turning up; some welcome drop-in visitors, others do not.
- Parking: the town centre is small and busy; the driver will drop you on the main road and wait in a paid lot. Charges are passed on at cost.
- Temple timings: Baijnath is busiest in the early morning and on Mondays; festival days bring long queues.
- What to pack: layers for cool evenings all year, a rain jacket from June to September and proper woollens from November to February.
- Shopping: buy tea from the gardens or cooperative outlets; Kangra miniature painting prints and Andretta pottery make lovely gifts.
- Mobile signal: generally good in town, patchier around Bir and the higher villages.
