Driving to Hyderabad from Vijayawada: time, distance and price
Hyderabad is about 275 km from Vijayawada on NH65, typically 5 hours by car via Nandigama, Suryapet and Choutuppal. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 9,900 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 15,670 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST, with tolls and parking at actual cost. Once there, an 8 hr / 80 km city sightseeing car starts at Rs 7,200 Pay Now to Reserve.
Hyderabad rewards people who arrive by road. You feel the city build long before you reach it: the orange soil of the Deccan plateau, granite boulders balanced on one another like sculptures, and then, around Hayathnagar, the first flyovers of a metropolis of many millions. Few Indian cities hold so many centuries so close together. The Qutb Shahi sultans built Golconda and Charminar; the Asaf Jahi Nizams added palaces and a court culture famous for its manners and its food; and the twenty-first century added HITEC City, glass towers and one of the country's busiest airports.
For travellers from Vijayawada, Guntur and coastal Andhra, the drive is familiar. For visitors from further afield who land in Vijayawada or are touring the Krishna valley, it is the natural next stop. Either way, a car with a driver is the most comfortable way to cover both the highway and the sprawl of the city, where the sights are spread across 40 km and local traffic has a logic all its own. This guide covers the drive, the city, seasons and festivals, and RutzIndia.com's fares. The reverse journey has its own page too: see Hyderabad to Vijayawada taxi.

On the road: NH65 westbound and the approach into the city
Leaving Vijayawada, the highway runs north-west past Kondapalli and Ibrahimpatnam, bypasses Nandigama and crosses into Telangana near Kodad. It is a four-lane divided road with good surfaces for most of its length, frequent toll plazas and a steady stream of lorries between the ports and the Deccan.
- Breakfast and lunch. Suryapet, roughly halfway, is the standard stop, with dhabas and air-conditioned family restaurants alike. Chityal and Choutuppal also have options closer to the city.
- Timing. A 6 am departure from Vijayawada puts you in Hyderabad around 11 am, before the lunchtime build-up. Evening arrivals face heavy traffic between Hayathnagar and LB Nagar.
- Where the city starts. The highway enters Hyderabad through Abdullapurmet and LB Nagar. If your hotel is in HITEC City, Gachibowli or the Financial District, your driver will usually take the Outer Ring Road round the south of the city instead of crossing the centre.
- A detour worth considering. Ramoji Film City sits just off NH65 near Abdullapurmet, about 25 km before the city. It is a full-day visit in itself, so either plan a separate day or save it for the drive out.
Tolls on NH65 are collected by FASTag and added to your bill at actual cost. For more on the interstate details, including permits for Andhra and Telangana registered vehicles, see our outstation cabs page.
What to see in Hyderabad, district by district
Hyderabad is best tackled in zones, and your chauffeur will group sights to avoid crossing the city twice.
The Old City. The Charminar, built in 1591, is the symbol of Hyderabad; climb it early in the morning before the crowds. Next to it are the Mecca Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India, and Laad Bazaar, famous for lacquer bangles, bridal wear and pearls. A short drive away, Chowmahalla Palace, the seat of the Nizams, has restored durbar halls, vintage cars and a lovely courtyard. Parking is tight in the Old City lanes; your driver will drop you close and wait nearby.
Golconda and the Qutb Shahi tombs. On the western side, Golconda Fort was the fortified capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and a centre of the diamond trade; its acoustics, which let a handclap at the gate be heard high on the citadel, are famous. The evening sound-and-light show is worth staying for. A kilometre or two away, the domed Qutb Shahi tombs have been carefully restored and are at their loveliest in late-afternoon light. Both monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India; ticketing and rules are on the ASI website.
Central Hyderabad. The Salar Jung Museum on the Musi holds one of the largest one-man collections in the world, from the Veiled Rebecca sculpture to a musical clock that draws a crowd every hour. Hussain Sagar, the heart-shaped lake with its monolithic Buddha statue, is ringed by Necklace Road and Lumbini Park. Birla Mandir, a white-marble temple on a hill above the lake, gives the best city view at dusk.
Out of town. The Statue of Equality at Muchintal, near Shamshabad on the airport side, honours the philosopher-saint Ramanujacharya and is visited by thousands daily. Ramoji Film City is a huge film-studio complex and theme park. To the north-east, the rebuilt Yadadri (Yadagirigutta) temple is a popular half-day pilgrimage, and a longer run takes you to the Kakatiya heritage covered in our guide to Warangal by road.
The food. Hyderabadi dum biryani is the obvious pilgrimage, but the city's table goes much further: haleem during Ramzan, Irani chai with Osmania biscuits at old cafes, kebabs and nihari in the Old City, double ka meetha and qubani ka meetha for dessert, and the Telugu meals of the newer neighbourhoods. The official Telangana Tourism site lists heritage sites, festivals and state-run tours.

When to visit: weather and the Hyderabad festival year
- October to February is the best time, with sunny days and cool evenings; December nights can be surprisingly chilly for the Deccan.
- March to May is hot and dry, with afternoons often near 40 degrees. Sightsee early and late, and spend the middle of the day in museums and malls.
- June to September brings the monsoon; heavy downpours cause waterlogging and slow traffic at underpasses, so allow extra time for airport runs.
- Ramzan transforms the Old City at night, with haleem, sheer khurma and street food around Charminar until the early hours. Dates follow the lunar calendar.
- Bonalu in the Ashada month (July to August) fills the city's goddess temples with processions.
- Bathukamma and Dasara (September to October) bring flower festivals across Telangana.
- Ganesh Chaturthi is enormous here, and the immersion day at Hussain Sagar closes many central roads. Avoid scheduling airport transfers across the centre on that day.
- Numaish, the long-running industrial exhibition at Nampally, runs through January and into February.

- Day 2: the Old City and Golconda (about 60 km local). Charminar at 8 am before the heat, Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar, Chowmahalla Palace, biryani lunch, Salar Jung Museum, then west to the Qutb Shahi tombs and the Golconda sound-and-light show.
- Day 3: Statue of Equality and home (about 330 km). Morning at Muchintal, then join NH65 via the Outer Ring Road and drive back to Vijayawada, with Ramoji Film City as an optional long stop.
The three days total roughly 680 km, so the 750 km minimum is what you pay. Staying on in Hyderabad afterwards? Switch to our Hyderabad taxi service for daily local hire.
Practical tips for Hyderabad by road
- Old City parking is scarce; let your driver drop you and circle or wait in a paid lot.
- Monument closures. Some sites close one day a week (Salar Jung Museum shuts on Fridays); check before you plan the day.
- Traffic windows. Avoid the IT corridor between 8:30 and 10:30 am and 6 and 8:30 pm on weekdays.
- Dress and footwear. Carry a scarf for mosques and remove shoes at temples; the driver will mind your bags in the car.
- Heat. From March to June keep water in the car and plan indoor stops for early afternoon.
- Cancellations. Free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% within 72 hours; 50% within 48 hours; 100% within 24 hours or on no-show. See our cancellation policy.
