Vijayawada by road from Hyderabad: the short answer
Vijayawada is about 275 km from Hyderabad along NH65, typically a 5-hour drive through Suryapet and Kodad. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 9,900 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 15,670 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. A same-day return runs about 550 km, so Rs 19,800 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, with tolls and parking billed at actual cost.
Vijayawada is the busy heart of coastal Andhra Pradesh: a railway crossroads, a trading city on the Krishna and home to one of the most revered goddess temples in the south. For Hyderabad families it is also the gateway to the Godavari and Krishna delta villages where many grew up, which is why the NH65 corridor between the two cities is one of the most travelled roads in the Telugu states.
It is an easy drive on paper, a four-lane highway most of the way. In practice the day goes better with someone else at the wheel: truck convoys, toll queues on festival weekends and the tangle of traffic entering Vijayawada near Benz Circle all reward local knowledge. This guide covers the road, the sights worth stopping for, the festival calendar and RutzIndia.com's fares. For the bare route fare in one place, see our Hyderabad to Vijayawada taxi page.

The NH65 drive, stage by stage
The route leaves Hyderabad on the Vijayawada highway through LB Nagar and Hayathnagar. If you are starting from HITEC City or Gachibowli, your chauffeur will usually take the Outer Ring Road round to the Pedda Amberpet junction to avoid the city core; that adds kilometres but saves time at most hours.
- Hyderabad to Choutuppal and Chityal (about 80 km). Suburbs quickly give way to open country. This first stretch is where the morning truck traffic is heaviest, so an early start pays off.
- Chityal to Suryapet (about 55 km). Suryapet is the classic breakfast or lunch halt, with dhabas and restaurants serving Andhra meals, biryani and strong tea. It sits almost exactly halfway.
- Suryapet to Kodad and the state border (about 50 km). You cross from Telangana into Andhra Pradesh near Garikapadu. Interstate cars are routine on this road; our vehicles carry the necessary permits, and any state entry tax or permit is passed on at actual cost.
- Nandigama to Vijayawada (about 70 km). The road bypasses Nandigama and brings you past Kanchikacherla into the city, crossing towards the Krishna from the north-west. Evening arrivals can slow down noticeably in the last 15 km.
Toll plazas are spaced along the whole route; all RutzIndia.com cars carry FASTag, and tolls are added to your bill at the amount actually paid. Fuel is plentiful, and every major town has clean restrooms at the larger restaurants. Allow five hours with one stop; six if you are travelling with elderly parents or small children and want two relaxed breaks.
If you are flying into Andhra instead, Vijayawada's airport at Gannavaram is about 20 km from the city centre; flight information is on the AAI Vijayawada airport page. We meet domestic arrivals with 30 minutes of free waiting and international ones with 60.
What to see in and around Vijayawada
Sri Kanaka Durga temple. The goddess presides from Indrakeeladri hill directly above the Krishna, and a visit here is the reason most pilgrims come. The ghat road and parking are managed by the temple; darshan types, seva timings and online tickets are published by the devasthanam at kanakadurgamma.org. Early mornings are calmest.
Prakasam Barrage and Bhavani Island. The barrage across the Krishna is the city's great civic landmark, lovely at dusk when the lights come on. Upstream, Bhavani Island is reached by boat and makes a pleasant hour with children.
Undavalli Caves. About 8 km from the city on the south bank, this multi-storey rock-cut cave temple is one of the most impressive ancient monuments in Andhra, famous for a large reclining Vishnu carved from the rock. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Mangalagiri. Around 12 km south, the Panakala Narasimha Swamy temple on the hill is known for the offering of panakam (jaggery water), and the town is also famous for its handloom cotton saris and fabrics.
Kondapalli. About 20 km north-west, the hill fort and the village of wood-carvers who make the colourful Kondapalli toys. It is a natural stop on the way in or out on NH65.
Amaravati. The ancient Buddhist stupa site near the Krishna, roughly 35 to 40 km from Vijayawada, has a site museum and a quiet, reflective atmosphere quite unlike the city.
Food. This is Andhra cooking at full strength: gongura pickle, pesarattu with upma for breakfast, pulusu curries, spicy chicken and fish fry, and the long banana-leaf meals served at the city's mess-style restaurants. Ask for less chilli if you are not used to it; nobody will be offended.

Seasons, heat and the festival calendar
Vijayawada is known for its heat. From April to June daytime temperatures often exceed 40 degrees and can climb much higher; if you must travel then, leave Hyderabad before dawn and plan sightseeing for the early morning and after sunset.
- November to February is the pleasant season, with warm days and cooler evenings.
- Dasara (Navaratri), usually in September or October, is the great event at Kanaka Durga, when the goddess is adorned in a different form each day and crowds swell enormously. Book cars and hotels well ahead.
- Sankranti in mid-January sends half of Hyderabad home to the Andhra districts. NH65 toll plazas become notoriously busy in the days before and after; travel a day early if you can.
- Krishna Pushkaralu, the river festival held once every twelve years, draws millions to the ghats; the next is expected around 2028.
- Monsoon (June to September) brings relief from heat but sudden heavy showers on the highway.
The district administration's Krishna district portal carries official notices on festival traffic arrangements.

A three-day Vijayawada itinerary by car
- Day 1 (about 290 km): leave Hyderabad at 6 am, breakfast at Suryapet, stop at Kondapalli for the toy-makers, check in and watch sunset at Prakasam Barrage.
- Day 2 (about 90 km local): dawn darshan at Kanaka Durga, Undavalli Caves mid-morning, lunch, Mangalagiri temple and handloom shops, Bhavani Island at dusk.
- Day 3 (about 330 km): morning at Amaravati's stupa and museum, then back up NH65 to Hyderabad by evening.
The meter over three days comes to roughly 710 km, so the 750 km minimum applies. If you only have a weekend, drop Amaravati and it fits into two days, billed on about 580 km.
Vijayawada for business travellers and returning families
Not everyone on NH65 is sightseeing. Vijayawada and neighbouring Guntur form one of the busiest commercial belts in Andhra Pradesh, with wholesale markets for textiles, chillies, tobacco and automobile parts, and government offices spread across the capital region towards Amaravati. For executives we recommend the premium sedan class (Honda City, Hyundai Verna or similar) at Rs 48 per km: quieter on the highway, with enough boot space for sample cases, and a GST invoice raised in your company's name. Your chauffeur can wait through a day of meetings and drive you back the same evening.
For families, the trip is often a homecoming rather than a holiday: a festival at the ancestral village, a thread ceremony, a housewarming or a wedding in the Krishna or Godavari delta. In that case the car may need to go well beyond Vijayawada, to Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Eluru or Guntur. Tell us the final village when you book and we will quote the full distance up front, so there are no surprises when the driver hands over the bill.
Where to stay
Most visitors base themselves around MG Road, Benz Circle or Labbipet, which put the temple, the barrage and the highway exits within easy reach. During Dasara, rooms near Indrakeeladri fill fast, so it can be easier to stay further out and let the car handle the transfers.
Practical tips
- Temple timings change on festival days. Check the devasthanam site the night before.
- Carry water and sun protection from March to June; parking areas at hilltop temples offer little shade.
- Dress modestly for Kanaka Durga and Mangalagiri; footwear is left at counters.
- Sankranti and Dasara traffic can double journey times. Our desk will suggest departure times.
- Changing plans? Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before pickup, then 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or for no-shows. See the cancellation policy.
Going further? Loop back through the Nallamala forest to Srisailam by road, or read our Hyderabad by road guide for the reverse journey. For multi-temple trips across both states, our pilgrimage taxi service and the Hyderabad taxi service desk can plan the whole circuit.
