How do you reach Srisailam by road from Hyderabad?
Srisailam is about 215 km from Hyderabad on the Srisailam highway via Kalwakurthy and Mannanur, typically 5 hours including the forest ghat. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 7,740 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 12,250 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. A same-day return is about 430 km: Rs 15,480 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, tolls and parking extra.
There are twelve Jyotirlingas in India, and Srisailam is the one Hyderabad can reach in a morning. The shrine of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy stands on a plateau above the gorge of the Krishna, and in the same temple complex is Sri Bhramaramba Devi, counted among the Shakti Peethas, a pairing of Shiva and Shakti that makes Srisailam unusually sacred. Pilgrims have come here for well over a thousand years, and the town still has the feel of a place that exists for devotion.
The journey is part of the experience. After the farmland of Mahabubnagar and Nagarkurnool districts, the highway enters the Nallamala hills and runs for tens of kilometres through the Amrabad Tiger Reserve, one of the largest in the country. Then the forest opens, you cross the great Srisailam dam on the Krishna, and the temple town appears on the ridge. It is a beautiful road and a demanding one, with steady ghat curves, grazing cattle and a night-time closure that every driver must plan around.
This guide explains that road, the darshan arrangements, the seasons and festivals, and the fares for RutzIndia.com cars. If you already know your dates, you can book online and pay by card or UPI.

The drive through Nallamala, and the forest rules that matter
Hyderabad to Kalwakurthy (about 85 km). The route leaves the city southwards past Shamshabad and the airport side, or via the Outer Ring Road from the western suburbs, onto the highway to Srisailam. The road through Amangal and Kalwakurthy is broad and quick. This is the place for breakfast; options thin out beyond Dindi.
Kalwakurthy to Mannanur (about 70 km). Past Vangoor, Dindi and Achampet the land begins to lift. Mannanur is the gateway village of the tiger reserve, with a forest checkpost and a small cluster of eateries. Jungle safaris into the Amrabad reserve start from this side when they are operating.
Mannanur to Srisailam (about 60 km). Now the road winds through dry deciduous forest in a long ghat, past Domalapenta and the viewpoints above the Krishna gorge, before crossing the dam and climbing to the temple town. Expect two hours or so for this section in normal traffic.
Two rules shape your schedule:
- Night closure of the forest road. Because the highway passes through core tiger habitat, the forest department closes the Mannanur to Domalapenta section to traffic at night, typically from about 9 pm to 6 am. If you reach the gate late, you wait until morning. Your chauffeur plans departure times so you clear the forest in daylight, and we will not schedule a return that risks the gate.
- Wildlife protection rules. No stopping to feed monkeys, no honking, no plastic thrown out of windows, and speed limits enforced on the forest stretch. Forest checkposts may levy a nominal entry or conservation fee on vehicles; it is billed at actual cost.
From the Andhra side, Srisailam is also reachable from Kurnool, from Vijayawada via Vinukonda and Dornala, and from Guntur. These routes run through the Nallamala as well, with their own forest stretches. If you are combining Srisailam with a coastal Andhra trip, see our guide to Vijayawada by road.
Darshan, sights and the sacred geography of Srisailam
Mallikarjuna Swamy and Bhramaramba Devi. Darshan options range from free general darshan to paid quick darshan and special pujas such as abhishekam. Timings, ticket types and dress codes are published by the temple on the official Srisaila Devasthanam site, and online booking opens in advance for busy days. On quiet weekdays the whole visit can take under two hours; on festival days, many times that.
Beyond the main shrine, most families take in:
- Sakshi Ganapathi, on the approach road, where tradition says Ganesha records your visit. Every pilgrim stops.
- Srisaila Sikharam, the high point about 8 km from the temple, with sweeping views and a small shrine; pilgrims say seeing the temple's pinnacle from here is itself auspicious.
- Patala Ganga, the bathing ghat on the Krishna far below the town, reached by a long flight of steps or by ropeway when operating.
- Srisailam dam, one of the major dams on the Krishna. In years when the reservoir fills during the monsoon and the crest gates are opened, the spectacle of water crashing into the gorge draws huge crowds.
- Hatakeswaram and Phaladhara Panchadhara, quieter shrines and springs in the forest around the town.
- Akkamahadevi caves, natural caves on the river associated with the twelfth-century poet-saint, reached by boat from the Srisailam side when boating is running.
- Octopus viewpoint and Mallela Theertham, on the Telangana side of the forest near Domalapenta: the first a viewpoint over the winding Krishna, the second a waterfall reached down a long flight of steps.
Food in Srisailam is simple and vegetarian: the temple's annadanam, meals halls and small hotels near the bus stand. Carry snacks and water for the forest stretch.

Best time to visit, festivals and crowd warnings
- October to February is ideal: pleasant temperatures, green hills after the monsoon and comfortable forest driving.
- Karthika Masam (roughly November), considered especially auspicious for Shiva worship, brings heavy weekend crowds and evening deepam rituals.
- Maha Shivaratri (February or March) is the biggest event of the year, with Brahmotsavams over several days, enormous queues and traffic regulation on the ghat. Book a car at least three weeks ahead and expect long waits at checkposts.
- Ugadi, the Telugu and Kannada new year in March or April, brings large numbers of pilgrims, many of them from Karnataka on foot.
- April to June is hot, often above 40 degrees in the plains; the forest gives some shade but start early.
- July to September is the monsoon. The dam is at its most dramatic if the gates open, but ghat roads can be slippery and misty. Drive only in daylight.

Where to stay in Srisailam
Accommodation is modest and fills quickly on festival weekends. The devasthanam runs cottages and choultries that can be reserved through its website, several caste and community associations maintain their own guest houses, and a handful of private hotels sit along the main road near the bus stand. Families with elderly members should ask for a ground-floor room, since many buildings climb steep slopes. On Shivaratri and Karthika weekends, stay the night before in Kalwakurthy or Achampet and enter the forest at first light instead; your driver will be happy to plan it that way.
Practical tips from drivers who do this road every week
- Mind the forest clock. Arriving at Mannanur after closing time means a night at the gate. We plan around it; please be ready on time.
- Carry cash and water. Mobile coverage is patchy inside the tiger reserve, and there are few shops for long stretches.
- Dress code. Traditional clothes are expected for special darshan and pujas; check the temple website.
- Motion sickness. The ghat has continuous curves. Front seats help; so does a light breakfast.
- Parking and entry. Temple parking and any ropeway or boating charges are paid on the spot or billed at actual cost.
- Plan for changes. Cancellation is free until 72 hours before pickup, then 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and the full fare within 24 hours or for a no-show; see the cancellation policy.
