The 6-day Karnataka tour package is a Bengaluru round trip over 5 nights: Srirangapatna and Mysore, a coffee estate in Coorg, then through Bandipur and Mudumalai to Ooty and Coonoor in the Nilgiris. One private car and one chauffeur stay with you throughout; RutzIndia.com charges per kilometre with a 250 km minimum each day.
What the sixth day buys you
The 5-day Karnataka package finishes with the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu. This longer version trades them for something quite different: a morning drive through two adjoining tiger reserves and two nights in the Nilgiri hills, including a ride on a UNESCO-listed mountain railway. It crosses into Tamil Nadu for the Ooty section, so it covers three distinct landscapes (palace plains, coffee hills and tea mountains) in under a week.
It suits families with children, who tend to enjoy the forest drive and the toy train more than temple carvings, and anyone escaping summer heat, since Ooty is cool when the plains are not. If temples interest you more than hill stations, stay with the five-day version. If you only want the hills, a Bangalore to Ooty taxi there and back is quicker. The tour packages from Bangalore page lists all the options side by side.

Rules of the forest road
Day four and day six cross Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, which together form one of the largest protected forests in south India. The highway through them is closed to ordinary traffic at night, broadly from nine in the evening to six in the morning, to protect wildlife. That is why the plan leaves Coorg at seven and never runs late on the return.
Inside the reserves, speed limits are low, stopping is not allowed and feeding or approaching animals is prohibited, with fines for breaking the rules. Your chauffeur will slow down for elephants and point out deer and gaur, but he will not pull over for photographs; a phone held steady from a moving car usually does the job. If you want a proper safari, add a night at Bandipur or Masinagudi and book a forest-department vehicle safari; it cannot be done from the highway. The Bandipur road guide covers timings in more detail.
Up to the Nilgiris: the ghat roads and the altitude
From Mudumalai there are two ways up to Ooty. The longer road through Gudalur climbs steadily with many bends but a reasonable gradient, and it is the usual choice with a loaded car. The shorter Kalhatti road from Masinagudi is famous for its 36 hairpin bends and is very steep, hard on brakes and at times subject to police restrictions for visiting vehicles. The chauffeur chooses on the day according to the rules in force and your comfort; if anyone gets carsick, mention it at breakfast and he will take the gentler road with a stop halfway.
Ooty sits at over 2,200 m and Doddabetta higher still. Altitude sickness is not a real concern at these heights for healthy travellers, but nights are cold from November to February, sometimes near freezing, so pack a warm layer. The Nilgiris district has, in recent peak seasons, required tourist vehicles to register for an online e-pass before entering; the travel desk checks the current rule for your dates and handles the registration with the booking.

Toy train and tea at Coonoor
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam on the plains up to Ooty, and the upper section between Ooty and Coonoor has extra services that suit a half-day ride. Seats are limited and sell out in holiday periods, so book tickets as soon as your dates are fixed; if the train is full, the road to Coonoor is only about an hour and still passes through the tea country. The car meets you at Coonoor station, so you never have to worry about getting back.
Coonoor is quieter and a little lower than Ooty, with walks among tea estates, colonial-era bungalows and viewpoints over the plains. Several estates and small factories let visitors see withering and rolling, and sell loose leaf by weight, which makes a lighter souvenir than most. The Coonoor road guide and our Ooty by road post have more on what to see.
Where you stay
- Mysore. Heritage hotels in former palace guest houses, or modern hotels close enough to walk to the palace illumination on a Sunday.
- Coorg. A working coffee estate homestay or a plantation resort near Madikeri; ask for one on the southern side of town to shorten the next morning's drive.
- Ooty and Coonoor. Colonial cottages and old hill-station hotels with fireplaces, larger resorts on the edge of Ooty, or a quieter tea-estate bungalow in Coonoor. Both nights can be in the same place, since the car does the running around.
Ask the RutzIndia.com travel desk for a written price covering car, rooms and breakfast.

Seasons from Mysore to Ooty
October to March is the best time for the whole loop: dry roads, cool Coorg mornings and clear Nilgiri views, with cold nights in Ooty around Christmas. April and May are when the plains are hottest and Ooty is at its busiest, with the flower show at the botanical garden in May; the hills are pleasant but crowded, and the e-pass and traffic controls matter most then. June to September brings the south-west monsoon, very wet in Coorg and misty in Ooty, and the forest is at its greenest.
Mysore Dasara in September or October and the Christmas and New Year weeks in Ooty are the other periods to book well ahead. The state's official Karnataka Tourism portal lists festival dates and monument hours.
Car choice and the fare
For two people, a Dzire sedan works well; for four to six, or for couples with lots of luggage, an Ertiga or Innova Crysta is more comfortable on the hill roads, and a Fortuner adds ground clearance for estate tracks. Groups of eight and above travel best in a Tempo Traveller from Bangalore or a Force Urbania; check with the desk about the Kalhatti road before choosing a larger vehicle.
The fare is calculated on billable kilometres: the actual distance or 250 km per calendar day, whichever is higher. Six days gives a minimum of 1,500 km, against roughly 970 km actually driven including airport runs, so the minimum applies here. Per-km rates are Rs 72 for a sedan, Rs 84 for an Ertiga, Rs 114 for an Innova Crysta, Rs 170 for a Fortuner, Rs 160 for a Tempo Traveller and Rs 200 for an Urbania. Add the driver's night allowance of Rs 3,000 per night, tolls, parking and the Tamil Nadu entry permit at actual cost, and 5% GST. The fare table on this page shows each class.
