What is the easiest way to get to Coonoor by road?
Coonoor is about 70 km from Coimbatore, usually around 2 hours by car via Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri ghat road. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 3,630 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,390 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies), before 5% GST. Tolls, the Nilgiris entry fee and parking are billed at actual cost.
Most people who fly into Coimbatore rush straight past Coonoor on their way to Ooty. That is a mistake worth avoiding. Coonoor sits lower, at roughly 1,850 metres, it is warmer at night, it has far fewer tour buses, and it is wrapped in some of the most photogenic tea gardens in India. Stay here and Ooty becomes an easy half-day outing, not the other way round.
This guide explains the ghat drive from Coimbatore, the sights that are worth your time, the Nilgiris e-pass and seasons, and the chauffeur-driven options RutzIndia.com offers, with every fare worked out from our published rate card. If you are ready, you can book a Coonoor cab online and pay by card or UPI.

Why choose Coonoor over the busier hill towns
Coonoor is a working hill town rather than a resort. The upper town around Bedford circle has bakeries, old churches and colonial cottages; the lower town is a busy market by the railway station. What draws visitors is everything around it:
- Sim's Park, a botanical garden laid out in the 1870s on a steep ravine, with rare trees from across the world and a fruit and vegetable show during the Nilgiris summer festival in May.
- Dolphin's Nose, about 10 km out, a rocky promontory with a view across the Kotagiri valley to Catherine Falls dropping down the far slope.
- Lamb's Rock and Lady Canning's Seat, two viewpoints on the same road, overlooking tea estates that tumble towards the Coimbatore plains.
- Tea factories such as Highfield, where short guided walks show withering, rolling and drying, and the shop sells fresh orthodox and green tea by the gram.
- Wellington, the leafy cantonment next door, home to the Defence Services Staff College; its golf course and old barracks give the area a tidy, disciplined feel.
- Law's Falls on the ghat road just below town, loud and full after the monsoon.
- Droog Fort, the ruins of a hill fort linked with Tipu Sultan, reached by a trek through estates and forest.
The other great attraction is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the blue-and-cream toy train that climbs from Mettupalayam to Coonoor on a rack-and-pinion track, part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. Seats sell out fast, so many families let the driver take their luggage up by road while they ride the train, and meet the car at Coonoor station. It is one of the nicest ways to combine rail and road in the south.
Food here is simple and good: bun butter jam at old bakeries, varkey (a flaky Nilgiri biscuit), home-made cheese from local dairies, and hot filter coffee on every corner.
Who is Coonoor for? Couples looking for a cottage stay with a view, retirees who want cool air without Ooty's weekend crush, photographers chasing the morning mist over the estates, and families who would rather spend a holiday walking than queueing. It also suits business travellers attending meetings in Coimbatore who have one free day: leave after breakfast, spend the middle of the day in the hills and be back at the airport for an evening flight.
The drive: Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri ghat
The plain section runs from Coimbatore airport or the city up the Mettupalayam road through Periyanaickenpalayam and Karamadai, about 35 to 40 km of busy but decent highway. Mettupalayam is the last proper town on the plains, with fuel, snacks and the railway terminus.
The climb begins at Kallar, where the road leaves the areca and banana groves and enters thick forest. From here to Coonoor it is a steady series of hairpins cut into the hillside, with the railway line appearing and vanishing across the valley. The road is two-lane with barriers on most outer bends, but it is steep, and trucks crawl uphill in low gear. Our drivers keep a steady pace, stop at the Burliar area for tea and corn if you like, and give way to buses on tight bends. From Mettupalayam to Coonoor takes roughly an hour.
If you are coming from Bangalore or Mysore rather than Coimbatore, the car usually enters the Nilgiris from the north via Gudalur or through the Masinagudi side road into Ooty and then drops down 19 km to Coonoor. Our Bangalore to Ooty taxi page covers that approach, including the forest check post timings on the Bandipur and Mudumalai stretch.
A third option, and a scenic one, is the Kotagiri road from Mettupalayam, which is gentler and passes Kotagiri town before swinging west to Coonoor. It adds a little distance but is good for anyone who finds the main ghat too twisty.

Seasons, rain and the Nilgiris e-pass
Coonoor is pleasant almost all year, but each season behaves differently:
- March to June: warm days of about 20 to 25 degrees, cool evenings and the summer festival. This is the busiest period on the ghat.
- June to August: the south-west monsoon brings drizzle and mist, though Coonoor gets less rain than places on the western slopes.
- October to December: the north-east monsoon hits this side of the Nilgiris harder, with spells of heavy rain that can cause brief road closures.
- January and February: cold, clear mornings, occasional ground frost in the valleys, and the best light for photography.
Since 2024, vehicles entering the Nilgiris district have needed an e-pass under a Madras High Court order meant to control congestion in Ooty and Coonoor. The details have been amended more than once, so our desk registers your vehicle before the trip and confirms the current rules. Official notices appear on the Nilgiris district website. Flight information for arrivals is on the Coimbatore airport site.

Two days in Coonoor: a suggested plan
Day 1: Coimbatore to Coonoor (about 75 km, plus 20 km local). Land in Coimbatore, drive up via Mettupalayam and reach Coonoor for lunch. Afternoon in Sim's Park and a walk around Bedford. Tea at a heritage bakery.
Day 2: Viewpoints and estates (about 40 km). Morning drive to Lamb's Rock, Lady Canning's Seat and Dolphin's Nose, with a stop at a tea factory. After lunch, head up to Ooty for the botanical garden and lake if you want the contrast, returning to Coonoor by dusk. Our Ooty by road guide lists what to prioritise there.
Day 3 (optional): Down the hill (about 75 km). Ride the toy train down from Coonoor to Mettupalayam while the car follows, then carry on to Coimbatore airport, or detour to the Isha Yoga Centre at the foot of the Velliangiri hills. Travellers heading into the Anamalai tea country should look at Valparai by road, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Coimbatore in the other direction.
Local tips before you go
- Toy train tickets open well in advance on the railway booking system and go quickly in summer; book the moment your dates are fixed.
- Parking near Sim's Park and the market is limited. The driver will drop you at the gate and wait nearby; paid parking is added at cost.
- Fees: Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and some estates charge small entry fees. Amounts change, so check on arrival.
- Local taxi rules: certain viewpoint roads are sometimes reserved for local taxis during peak season. Your driver will tell you if a switch is needed.
- Plastic ban: the Nilgiris strictly restricts single-use plastic bottles and bags; carry a steel bottle.
- What to wear: a light fleece for evenings year round, rain gear from October to December.
Coonoor is best taken slowly: a pot of tea on a veranda, a morning walk through the estates, and a driver who handles the bends while you watch the clouds lift off the valley.
