How to reach Ooty by road, and what the taxi costs
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is about 270 km from Bangalore, typically 6.5 hours via Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur, Mudumalai and the Gudalur ghat. A RutzIndia.com sedan costs Rs 9,720 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 15,390 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST; tolls, the Nilgiris green tax and parking are at actual cost. A two-day return of about 540 km is Rs 19,440 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan.
There are quicker hill stations from Bangalore, but none with a road like this one. After the expressway to Mysore, the highway runs south through farm country to Gundlupet, then plunges into the teak and bamboo of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, crosses into Tamil Nadu at the Moyar river and continues through Mudumalai before climbing the Nilgiris in a long series of bends. Elephants on the tarmac, spotted deer at the verge and gaur in the undergrowth are common sights, so a patient, forest-savvy driver is worth far more than a fast one.
Two rules shape every Ooty trip by car today: the night closure of the forest highway and the Nilgiris e-pass. Both are explained below, along with the sights, the season and our fares. If you only want the fare card, the Bangalore to Ooty taxi page has it.

What Ooty and the Nilgiris offer
- Government Botanical Garden. Terraced lawns, a fossil tree trunk, glasshouses and the famous flower show every May. The garden is maintained by the Tamil Nadu horticulture department; its official site lists the gardens and events.
- Ooty Lake and the boathouse. Pedal and rowing boats on an artificial lake from the town's colonial founding era; busy in summer, pleasant on weekday mornings.
- Doddabetta. The highest point in the Nilgiris at about 2,637 metres, with a telescope house and, on clear days, views towards the Mysore plateau.
- Tea country. Tea estates cover the slopes around Ooty and Coonoor. Several factories near Doddabetta run tours with tastings of Nilgiri tea and homemade chocolate.
- Pykara. Waterfalls, a boathouse on the reservoir and pine-and-grassland scenery on the road towards Gudalur; the Pine Forest and the "Ninth Mile" shooting spot are on the way.
- Avalanche and Emerald lakes. Quieter lakes to the south-west, reached through forest; parts of the Avalanche area are managed by the forest department with restricted entry.
- The Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The rack-and-pinion toy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. Seats sell out fast in season; a popular plan is to take the train one way and meet your car at Coonoor or Ooty.
- Food. Varkey biscuits, homemade chocolate, Toda embroidery, and a fine plate of Kerala parotta and beef fry or Tamil meals in Charing Cross.
For a slower base, many travellers prefer Coonoor, 19 km downhill; see Coonoor by road.
The road: Bandipur, Mudumalai and the ghat to Ooty
The usual route from Bangalore
Bangalore to Mysore on the expressway (about 145 km), then the Mysore-Nanjangud-Gundlupet road south. Beyond Gundlupet, the highway enters Bandipur; at Melukamanahalli the Ooty road branches off and crosses into Tamil Nadu near Kakkanahalla, runs through Theppakadu in Mudumalai, and then climbs through Gudalur and Naduvattam to Ooty. The forest sections are slow by rule: speed humps, low limits and no stopping for photographs near animals.
The night closure
The Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads are closed to vehicles overnight, roughly from 9 pm to 6 am, to reduce roadkill; the ban has been upheld by the courts and is enforced at the check posts. In practice this means your chauffeur plans to be clear of the forest by early evening. If a flight lands late in Bangalore, it is better to sleep in Mysore and continue at dawn. See our Bandipur by road guide for more on the reserve.
Kalhatty ghat via Masinagudi
From Theppakadu there is a shorter, much steeper road via Masinagudi and the 36 hairpins of the Kalhatty ghat. Authorities restrict it at times, particularly for heavy vehicles and for downhill travel, and brakes suffer on the descent. Your chauffeur will choose the Gudalur route unless the Kalhatty road is open and suitable for your vehicle.
From Coimbatore or Kerala
From Coimbatore airport the route is via Mettupalayam and the Coonoor ghat, about 85 km and roughly 3 hours; see our Coimbatore taxi service. From Kerala, the Gudalur side connects to Wayanad and Kozhikode.

The Nilgiris e-pass and green tax
Since 2024, following Madras High Court directions, vehicles entering the Nilgiris from outside the district need an e-pass, applied for online at the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal before you reach the checkpost. It is free, and there have been daily caps on tourist vehicles in peak periods. A separate green tax is collected at the entry checkposts. Rules and caps have changed several times, so we check the current position on the Nilgiris district website and the portal before every trip, and our team helps you register the car details. Carry the QR pass on your phone.
When to go: summer season, monsoon and winter frost
- March to June. Peak season when the plains swelter. The May flower show, fruit show and boat races draw huge crowds; book cars and hotels early and expect traffic in town.
- July to September. South-west monsoon rain, mist and landslips on the ghat roads; beautiful and quiet but slow.
- October to November. North-east monsoon showers, green hills, fewer visitors.
- December to February. Clear skies and cold nights; frost on the Ooty grasslands on some mornings. Bring proper woollens.
Diwali, Christmas-New Year and the Pongal holidays in January are all busy, and weekend traffic in Ooty town can be heavy.

Three days in the Nilgiris by car
Day 1: Bangalore to Ooty (about 275 km). Leave by 6 am, breakfast in Mysore, and enter Bandipur by late morning. Drive slowly through Mudumalai, lunch in Gudalur, and reach Ooty mid-afternoon. Evening walk around Charing Cross and the market.
Day 2: Ooty and Coonoor (about 70 km). Botanical Garden at opening, Doddabetta before the clouds roll in, a tea factory, then down to Coonoor for Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose. Return up the hill for dinner.
Day 3: Pykara and back (about 300 km). An early loop to Pykara falls and the pine forest, then the descent through Naduvattam and Gudalur. Clear the forest well before closing time and reach Bangalore by night.
Driving etiquette in a tiger reserve
The Bandipur and Mudumalai stretch is the part of the journey guests remember, and it is also where a careless driver can cause real harm. Our chauffeurs follow a few simple rules that we ask you to respect as well.
The car keeps moving at the posted speed. Stopping on the highway to photograph an elephant herd is prohibited, and it is genuinely dangerous: a startled tusker can charge a car in seconds, and a mother with a calf will not tolerate a vehicle idling next to her. If animals are on the road, the chauffeur waits at a safe distance with the engine running until they cross, and never honks at them.
Nobody gets out of the car inside the forest, including for a quick roadside break. Plan restroom and tea stops at Gundlupet before the forest or at Gudalur after it. Feeding langurs and macaques at the check posts is an offence and turns them into road hazards, so keep snacks inside.
Litter goes home with you. Plastic wrappers and bottles thrown from cars choke animals and are fined by forest staff. Our drivers carry a bin bag in every car for exactly this reason.
If you want to see the forest rather than just pass through it, book a proper safari at Bandipur, Mudumalai or Kabini by road and let the forest department's vehicles take you inside.
Practical tips
- Parking in Ooty is scarce around the lake and the botanical garden in season; your chauffeur drops you at the gate and waits in paid lots.
- Motion sickness. The ghat has continuous bends; sit in front, eat light, keep a window cracked.
- Plastic ban. The Nilgiris restrict single-use plastics, including water bottles in some formats; carry a reusable bottle.
- Local sightseeing cabs. Some points are served only by local vehicles; your chauffeur will advise.
- Clothing. Layers year-round; woollens from November to February.
