How do you get to Tarkarli by road?
Tarkarli is about 120 km from Panaji in Goa, typically 3 hours by car north on NH66 via Pernem, Sawantwadi and Kudal to Malvan. With RutzIndia.com the one-way fare is Rs 4,350 Pay Now to Reserve for a Dzire-class sedan or Rs 7,620 Pay Now to Reserve for a seven-seat Innova Crysta (Goa minimum fare applies), both quoted before 5% GST; tolls and parking are passed on at cost. From Mumbai the coastal drive is about 530 km.
Just across the Goa border, where Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district begins, the coast changes character. The beaches are emptier, the villages sleepier, and the water, in the calm months after the monsoon, is some of the clearest anywhere on India's west coast. Tarkarli is the best known of these beaches: a long strip of fine sand and casuarinas running south from the fishing town of Malvan to Devbag, where the Karli river pours into the Arabian Sea. Offshore stands Sindhudurg, the island fortress that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built in the 1660s to challenge the European and Siddi navies.
Many visitors combine Tarkarli with a Goa holiday, driving up from North Goa for two or three nights. Others fly into Goa's Mopa airport and head straight here, or make it the southern end of a long Konkan road trip from Mumbai or Pune. In every case a chauffeur makes sense: the drive crosses a state border, the last stretch through Kudal and the Malvan backroads is easy to get wrong, and the driver is on hand for dawn dolphin trips and evening fish-market runs.

What to see and do around Tarkarli and Malvan
Sindhudurg Fort. Built between about 1664 and 1667 on Kurte island, a short boat ride from Malvan jetty, Sindhudurg is one of the great Maratha sea forts. Its walls run for several kilometres around the island, and inside are shrines, wells of sweet water and a small temple, the Shivrajeshwar, dedicated to Shivaji himself. Impressions said to be the king's handprint and footprint are shown to visitors. Boats run from Malvan in the fair-weather season; timings depend on tide and sea state. The Sindhudurg Fort article covers its history in detail.
Snorkelling and scuba diving. The rocky reefs around Sindhudurg and off Tarkarli support corals, reef fish and occasional turtles. Local operators run snorkelling trips from Malvan and Tarkarli, and the state tourism corporation runs a scuba diving institute at Tarkarli offering introductory dives and courses. Visibility is best between roughly November and March. Choose operators carefully, insist on life jackets, and follow the instructors' briefings.
Devbag and the sangam. At the southern tip, the Karli river meets the sea in a broad estuary. Boat rides go out to the sandbar often called Tsunami Island, and, if you are lucky, early-morning trips spot dolphins in the bay.
Karli backwaters and houseboats. Upriver, the Karli winds through mangroves and coconut groves; houseboat stays and day cruises operate in season, and the evening light on the water is lovely.
Malvan town. A busy fishing town with a bustling market, the Rock Garden on the seafront, and plenty of family restaurants.
Further afield. The Nivati fort and Bhogwe beach to the south, Vengurla's lighthouse and cashew factories, the Dhamapur lake inland, and the seaside Kunkeshwar temple near Devgad to the north all make good half-day drives.

The drive
From Goa (about 120 km from Panaji)
The driver heads north over the Mandovi and through Mapusa and Pernem on NH66, crosses into Maharashtra near Patradevi, then continues through Sawantwadi, with its lake and famous lacquered wooden toys, to Kudal. From Kudal a state road runs west about 30 km to Malvan, and Tarkarli is a few kilometres further south. The highway sections are fast; the last stretch is a narrower country road through villages and orchards. Allow about three hours from Panaji, and a little less from Calangute or Anjuna.
Goa's newer airport at Mopa in the north of the state is noticeably closer to Tarkarli than Dabolim, which makes it the natural airport for this trip. We meet arrivals at either airport with flight tracking and a name board, and include 60 minutes of free waiting after international flights and 30 after domestic. For details of the arrival process, see our Goa airport taxi page.
From Mumbai (about 530 km) and Pune (about 390 km)
From Mumbai the route runs the length of NH66, the Mumbai-Goa highway, through Mahad, Chiplun, Ratnagiri district and Kankavli, then west to Malvan. It is a full day's drive of around ten to eleven hours; most people break it with a night at Ganpatipule or Ratnagiri. From Pune, the fastest route is NH48 to Kolhapur and then west down the Phonda Ghat to Kankavli, about eight hours. A one-way sedan is about Rs 19,080 Pay Now to Reserve from Mumbai and Rs 14,040 Pay Now to Reserve from Pune.
By rail
Kudal and Sindhudurg stations on the Konkan Railway are about 30 to 35 km from Tarkarli, and we can meet trains and run local sightseeing from there.

When to go
- October to February: the classic season, with calm, clear water, comfortable temperatures and the best conditions for snorkelling, diving and the fort boats. Diwali, Christmas and New Year are very busy.
- March to May: warmer, still good for water activities, and the season for Alphonso mangoes and cashew fruit.
- June to September: the monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas. The annual monsoon fishing ban on the west coast runs through June and July, and boats to Sindhudurg, water sports and diving are generally suspended until the sea settles. The countryside is gorgeous, but this is not a beach holiday.
Ganeshotsav, usually in August or September, is celebrated with great fervour in every Konkani home, and local traffic and ferry demand rise sharply at that time.

Planning a longer Konkan loop
Tarkarli sits at the southern end of Maharashtra's coast, which makes it the natural turning point of a longer road journey. A favourite circuit starts in Pune, drops to Kolhapur for Ambabai darshan and a Kolhapuri thali, descends the Phonda Ghat to Malvan for three nights of beach and sea fort, and then runs north along NH66 to Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri before climbing back over the Sahyadri. That is roughly 1,100 to 1,200 km over six or seven days, billed on the kilometres actually driven because it comfortably exceeds the daily minimum.
Travellers who start in Goa often reverse the idea: two nights in Tarkarli, a day in Sawantwadi and Amboli's hills in the monsoon-green months, then back to the Goa beaches for the flight home. Others simply want a one-way transfer and to fly out of Kolhapur or take the Konkan Railway north; our one-way taxi fares cover exactly the distance you travel. Whichever shape you choose, tell the desk which beaches, forts and temples matter most, and we will plan daily distances that leave time for long lunches.
Two days in Tarkarli from Goa
Day 1: Goa to Tarkarli (about 130 km). Leave North Goa after breakfast, pause at Sawantwadi's lake and toy workshops, and reach Tarkarli for a late Malvani lunch. Afternoon on the beach, then a sunset walk to Devbag.
Day 2: Sindhudurg and the sea (about 30 km), then back (about 130 km). Early boat to Sindhudurg fort, followed by a snorkelling trip if the water is clear. Lunch in Malvan and return to Goa by evening. With a third day, add a backwater cruise, a dolphin trip and a lazy morning on the sand.
Practical tips
- Sea conditions decide everything. Fort boats, snorkelling and dolphin trips all depend on the weather and tide. Keep your plans flexible.
- Choose safe operators. Insist on life jackets and check that boats are not overloaded.
- Food: kombdi vade, surmai and bangda fry, prawn and clam curries, solkadhi, and the local sweet khaja. Vegetarian Malvani thalis are excellent too.
- Cash: carry some for boats, jetty fees and small stalls; the car fare itself is paid digitally.
- Sun and salt: reef shoes, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen make the boat trips far more comfortable.
- Border crossing: carry ID. Our drivers handle any vehicle formalities at the Goa-Maharashtra border.
