How do you get to Spiti Valley by road?

Kaza, Spiti's main town, is about 200 km from Manali via the Atal Tunnel, Batal and Kunzum La, typically 8 to 10 hours when the pass is open (roughly June to October). With RutzIndia.com an Innova Crysta costs Rs 11,400 Pay Now to Reserve one way and a Fortuner Rs 16,800 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. We do not send sedans on this road.

Spiti is a high cold desert on the Tibetan side of the Himalaya, a valley of ochre cliffs, braided rivers and whitewashed villages at 3,500 to 4,500 metres. It has been part of the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh since independence, and for most of its history it was reachable only on foot or horseback over high passes. Today two roads lead in: the dramatic summer route from Manali over Kunzum La, and the longer Kinnaur road from Shimla that follows the Sutlej and Spiti rivers and stays open for much more of the year.

Both are serious journeys. There are long stretches with no fuel, water crossings that swell in the afternoon, rockfall zones, and altitudes where a careless itinerary can make someone genuinely unwell. That is exactly why we insist on SUVs or Innova-class vehicles with drivers who have done these roads before, and why this guide spends as much time on the practicalities as on the sights.

What to see in Spiti

  • Key Monastery (Kye Gompa). The largest monastery in Spiti, stacked on a conical hill above the Spiti river about 14 km from Kaza, with a history going back roughly a thousand years. The view of it from the road below is the valley's defining image. A good overview is on Wikipedia's Key Monastery page.
  • Kibber and Chicham. Kibber, above Key, is one of the highest villages connected by road. Nearby, the Chicham bridge spans a dizzying gorge.
  • Langza. A village known for marine fossils found in its soil, a reminder that the Himalaya rose from an ancient sea, and a large Buddha statue looking over the valley.
  • Hikkim. Home to a post office often described as among the highest in the world, where visitors mail postcards home.
  • Komic. Another very high village with a small monastery, usually combined with Langza and Hikkim in a single loop from Kaza.
  • Dhankar. The old capital of Spiti, with a monastery perched on crumbling cliffs above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers and a short, steep walk to a high lake.
  • Tabo Monastery. Founded in the late tenth century and famous for its ancient murals and clay sculptures, Tabo is one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist monasteries in the Himalaya.
  • Pin Valley National Park. A side valley south of the Spiti river, home to ibex and a snow leopard habitat, with the village of Mudh at the end of the road.
  • Chandratal. Reached from Batal on the Manali route, the crescent "moon lake" sits at roughly 4,300 metres. Vehicles park a short walk from the shore; camping is regulated.

Kaza has homestays, guesthouses, cafés and a few pharmacies. Food across the valley is simple and warming: thukpa, momos, butter tea and local barley dishes.

The roads into Spiti

Route 1: Manali, Atal Tunnel and Kunzum La (about 200 km)

  1. Manali to the Atal Tunnel and Gramphu (about 40 km). The 9 km Atal Tunnel under the Pir Panjal range has transformed access to Lahaul. From the north portal near Sissu the road turns east along the Chandra river to Gramphu, where it meets the old Rohtang road. Read our Sissu by road guide for this first stretch.
  2. Gramphu to Batal (about 50 km). This is the rough bit: broken tarmac, loose gravel, boulders and stream crossings at Chhatru and beyond. Water levels rise with afternoon snowmelt, which is why drivers leave Manali before dawn.
  3. Batal to Kunzum La and Losar (about 35 km). From Batal, with its famous dhaba and the Chandratal turn-off, the road climbs hairpins to Kunzum La at about 4,550 metres, with its prayer flags and Kunzum Mata shrine, then drops to Losar, the first Spiti village.
  4. Losar to Kaza (about 60 km). A gentler run down the valley past Hansa and Kiato to Kaza.

This route typically opens in June once the Border Roads Organisation clears the snow and closes with the first heavy autumn falls, usually by late October or November. Dates vary every year, so we confirm status before every departure.

Route 2: Shimla and Kinnaur (about 420 km from Shimla to Kaza)

The longer route follows NH5 from Shimla through Narkanda and Rampur to Reckong Peo, then Khab, Nako, Sumdo and Tabo to Kaza; the Narkanda by road guide describes the first day out of Shimla. It is paved for much of the way, climbs gradually (which helps acclimatisation) and stays open far longer, though winter snow and landslides can still close it. Most travellers take three days to reach Kaza this way. A full circuit, in via Kinnaur and out via Kunzum to Manali, is the classic Spiti road trip.

Fuel warning: on the Manali route there is no reliable fuel between Manali and Kaza, a distance of about 200 km. Our drivers fill up in Manali and carry reserve where permitted. Kaza has a petrol pump.

Season, snow and permits

  • June and early July: the Kunzum route opens, snow walls line the higher road and streams run high.
  • Mid-July to August: Spiti lies in a rain shadow, so it stays drier than Manali, but the approach roads through Kullu and Kinnaur can suffer landslides. Water crossings are at their worst.
  • September and early October: the best window. Clear skies, lower streams, harvest in the villages and superb light. Nights drop below freezing.
  • Late October to May: Kunzum La is closed. Spiti is accessible only via Kinnaur, and even that route can be blocked by snow. Winter trips are for experienced travellers with flexible dates.

Permits: Indian nationals do not currently need a permit to visit Spiti. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the restricted stretch near the international border on the Kinnaur route, issued through the district administrations; carry passport copies. Driving through the Atal Tunnel has not required a separate permit at the time of writing, while the Rohtang Pass itself operates on an online permit system. Rules change, so verify with the Lahaul and Spiti district administration shortly before you travel.

  • Spiti circuits where the car and driver stay with you for five to nine days, billed at the higher of actual kilometres or 250 km per calendar day.
  • Pickup at Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) airport or from a Delhi or Chandigarh overnight bus, with flight tracking, a name board, and free waiting of 60 minutes after international flights or 30 minutes after domestic ones.
  • Linking tours that start from Delhi or Chandigarh; see our Delhi to Manali taxi and Chandigarh to Manali taxi pages for the approach.

Why the circuit figures look high relative to the distance: a six-day Manali–Spiti–Manali loop might only drive 700 to 900 km, but the outstation minimum of 250 km for each calendar day applies to the car and chauffeur's time. The driver's night allowance of Rs 1,500 per night is added on top. All fares exclude 5% GST, and tolls, state entry fees, any permit charges and parking are paid at actual cost. Card and UPI payments are accepted through the booker, and companies receive GST invoices.

Spiti plans often change with the weather. Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup for a full refund; otherwise the cancellation policy charges 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours, and the whole fare within 24 hours or for a no-show.

Practical advice for Spiti by road

  • Acclimatise: spend at least one night in Manali before crossing, sleep no higher than necessary on the first night, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol early on. If anyone develops a severe headache, breathlessness at rest or confusion, descend and seek medical help. Ask your doctor before travel about preventive medication.
  • Start early every day: afternoon snowmelt raises stream crossings, and winds pick up on the passes.
  • Cash and connectivity: carry enough cash; ATMs in Kaza exist but can run dry. Mobile networks are limited to a few operators and patchy outside Kaza.
  • Parking and village etiquette: park only where your driver indicates; village lanes are narrow and shared with livestock. Ask before photographing people or monastery interiors.
  • Entry fees: monasteries and the national park may charge small entry or camera fees; check locally.
  • Pack: down jacket, thermals, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, a basic medical kit and water purification. UV is intense at altitude.
  • Leave no trace: Spiti's ecosystem is fragile. Carry your plastic back to Manali.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Manali to Spiti?

Manali to Kaza is about 200 km and typically takes 8 to 10 hours via the Atal Tunnel, Batal and Kunzum La. The Gramphu to Batal section is slow, rough and involves stream crossings, so drivers leave before dawn. Via Kinnaur from Shimla the trip is about 420 km and usually spread over three days.

What does a taxi from Manali to Kaza cost?

With RutzIndia.com an Innova Crysta costs Rs 11,400 Pay Now to Reserve one way and a Fortuner Rs 16,800 Pay Now to Reserve, based on 200 km at Rs 57.6 and Rs 84 per km. A six-day circuit from Manali is billed on the 1,500 km minimum, Rs 85,500 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova, plus driver night allowance, 5% GST and actual tolls and fees.

Can I go to Spiti in a sedan?

We do not send sedans to Spiti. The Kunzum route has broken surfaces, loose gravel and water crossings, and the ground clearance of a sedan is not enough to do it safely or comfortably. Innova Crystas and Fortuners are our standard; Tempo Travellers work for groups willing to accept a slower pace on rough sections.

When is the Manali to Spiti road open?

The Kunzum La route usually opens around June, once snow is cleared, and closes with heavy autumn snow, typically by late October or November. Exact dates vary each year. Outside that window, Spiti can be reached only via Kinnaur and Shimla, and even that road may close after winter storms.

Do I need a permit to visit Spiti Valley?

Indian citizens do not currently need a permit for Spiti. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the restricted stretch near the border on the Kinnaur route. The Atal Tunnel has not required a separate permit at the time of writing, but rules change, so check the district administration website before travelling.

How do I avoid altitude sickness in Spiti?

Go up gradually. Spend a night in Manali first, keep day two in Kaza gentle, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first days and do not rush up to Chandratal on arrival. Entering via Kinnaur gives a slower climb. Anyone with worsening headache, breathlessness or confusion should descend and seek medical help promptly.

Where is the last petrol pump before Spiti from Manali?

Fill up in Manali. On the Kunzum route there is no dependable fuel between Manali and Kaza, a stretch of about 200 km through remote country. Kaza has a petrol pump for the rest of the circuit. Our chauffeurs plan fuel for every stage and carry what is permitted as a reserve.

Is Spiti suitable for families with children or older travellers?

It can be, with the right plan: an extra acclimatisation day, shorter drives, comfortable homestays and an Innova Crysta or Fortuner rather than a crowded van. Travellers with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor first. The Kinnaur approach, which climbs more gradually, is gentler on the body than the direct Kunzum crossing.
