Sissu by car from Manali: time and taxi price
Sissu is about 40 km from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, typically 1.5 hours when Solang traffic is light. RutzIndia.com charges Rs 4,170 Pay Now to Reserve for a sedan drop and Rs 7,290 Pay Now to Reserve in an Innova Crysta (minimum fare applies), but most guests book Manali's 8 hr / 80 km day package: Rs 7,560 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan, Rs 13,230 Pay Now to Reserve by Innova, before 5% GST and actual parking.
For most of history, Lahaul was cut off from Manali for half the year by the Rohtang Pass, which closes under deep snow each winter. That changed in October 2020 with the opening of the Atal Tunnel, a roughly 9 km bore under the Pir Panjal range at around 3,000 metres, widely described as the longest highway tunnel in the world above 10,000 feet. It shortened the journey to the Lahaul valley dramatically and created an instant new tourist favourite on the far side: Sissu, a small village beside the Chandra river with a tall waterfall tumbling off the cliffs opposite.
Today a Manali trip hardly feels complete without a day through the tunnel. In summer Sissu is green fields, glacier-fed streams and cafés on the riverbank; in winter it can be buried in snow, and the chance of real snow within a couple of hours of Manali draws enormous crowds. A local chauffeur who knows the traffic patterns at Palchan and Solang, the tunnel rules and the state of the Lahaul road on the day is worth more here than almost anywhere else in Himachal.

Sights from Manali to Sissu and beyond
- Solang Valley. On the Manali side of the tunnel, a broad valley known for its ropeway, paragliding in season and snow activities in winter. Most itineraries pause here on the way back.
- The Atal Tunnel itself. A modern, well-lit horseshoe tunnel with ventilation and emergency facilities. Stopping, overtaking and photography inside are not allowed; enjoy it from your seat.
- The north portal and Chandra valley. The moment you leave the tunnel the landscape changes to open, rocky slopes and snowfields, with the Chandra river below.
- Sissu waterfall and village. The waterfall drops down a cliff face across the valley; in cold winters it can freeze into a column of ice. Near the village there is a small lake and a riverside promenade.
- Gondhla. A short drive on, the village has a tall old wooden and stone tower-fort associated with the local ruling family.
- Tandi. Where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet to become the Chandrabhaga, which flows on into Jammu and Kashmir as the Chenab.
- Keylong. The district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti, about 70 km from Manali via the tunnel, with the Kardang and Shashur monasteries on the slopes nearby.
- Jispa. A riverside stop further along the Leh road, popular for overnight stays on the way to Ladakh.
In Sissu itself the stalls serve Maggi, momos, thukpa and endless cups of tea. Keylong has more choice.
The road: Manali to Sissu through the tunnel
Manali to the south portal (about 25 km)
The route leaves Manali north along the Beas through Vashisht or the left-bank road, past Palchan and the Solang turn-off, then climbs to the tunnel's south portal near Dhundi. This stretch is where traffic concentrates: in peak season and after winter snowfall, queues at Palchan and Solang can add an hour or more. Starting early is the single best piece of advice we can give.
Through the Atal Tunnel (about 9 km)
Inside the tunnel the drive takes about 10 to 15 minutes under normal conditions. Speed limits and lane discipline are enforced, and traffic is sometimes regulated at the portals during snow or maintenance.
North portal to Sissu (about 6 to 8 km)
Beyond the tunnel the road descends along the Chandra valley to Sissu. In summer this is a smooth, scenic run; in winter it can be icy and restricted to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive.
Getting to Manali first: Manali is about 310 km from Chandigarh and about 540 km from Delhi. Our Chandigarh to Manali taxi and Delhi to Manali taxi pages list those fares. The nearest airport is Bhuntar, about 50 km south of Manali, where our chauffeur tracks your flight and waits with a name board: free for 60 minutes after international arrivals and 30 minutes after domestic ones, then at the hourly rate.

Seasons, snow and the rules
- May to June: the busiest period. Snow still lies near the north portal early in the season; the Chandra valley turns green by June. Traffic around Solang peaks.
- July to September: monsoon on the Manali side, but Lahaul lies in a partial rain shadow and is often drier and clearer. Landslides on the Manali approach can cause delays.
- October: crisp and golden, with fewer visitors. Excellent for photography.
- December to March: snow season. Sissu becomes the easiest place near Manali to find deep snow, and holiday crowds follow. After heavy falls the administration may restrict tourist traffic beyond the tunnel, allow only four-wheel-drive vehicles or chains, or close the road temporarily. The tunnel itself has been kept open for most of each winter, though it too can close during storms.
Permits: at the time of writing, visitors have not needed a separate permit to drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, while the Rohtang Pass operates on its own permit system. Rules are revised from time to time by the Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti administrations, so check the Lahaul and Spiti district website before you go. The Atal Tunnel article on Wikipedia has a clear account of the tunnel's engineering and history.

Suggested days out from Manali
Summer day: tunnel, Sissu and Keylong (about 150 km)
Leave Manali at 7 am, pass Solang before the crowds, and through the tunnel by 8. Breakfast by the river in Sissu, walk towards the waterfall, then continue past Gondhla and Tandi to Keylong and Kardang monastery. Lunch in Keylong, then back through the tunnel, with Solang's ropeway on the return if the queue is short. Because this exceeds 80 km, it is billed as an outstation day on the 250 km minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve by sedan.
Winter snow day (about 80 km)
Start by 7 am with chains on board. Snow play at Sissu while the slopes are still fresh, hot tea and maggi, and back through the tunnel before the afternoon queue. If the police restrict traffic beyond the tunnel, your chauffeur will switch to Solang's snowfields instead.
Two days: Sissu and Jispa (about 190 km)
Overnight in Jispa or Keylong, with a slow second morning along the Bhaga river, then back to Manali. A good trial run for anyone heading to Ladakh or Spiti later.

Practical tips for Sissu
- Timing: go early. The difference between a 7 am and a 10 am departure can be two hours of queueing on a winter weekend.
- Parking: Sissu has roadside and designated parking near the waterfall viewpoint. On crowded days your chauffeur may drop you and wait further along the road.
- Local operator rules: snow-activity operators, pony owners and some taxi unions in the Solang area have their own arrangements. Your booked car stays with you, but occasionally local regulations limit where outside vehicles can stop; your chauffeur will follow official instructions.
- Altitude and cold: Sissu sits at roughly 3,100 metres. Walk slowly, drink water and wear proper winter gear; the wind off the Chandra is bitter even on sunny days.
- Fuel: fill up in Manali. Keylong has a petrol pump for longer journeys.
- Respect the valley: Lahaul's villages are small and conservative. Ask before photographing people, dress modestly and take your litter back.
