How do you reach Pondicherry from Chennai by road?
Pondicherry is about 150 km south of Chennai, usually 3 hours by car along the East Coast Road via Mahabalipuram and Marakkanam. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 5,400 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 8,550 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. The ECR toll, any state entry charge and parking are billed at actual cost.
Few weekend drives in India match the run from Chennai to Pondicherry. The East Coast Road hugs the Bay of Bengal for much of the way, past salt pans, backwaters, fishing villages and the carved temples of Mahabalipuram, and then delivers you into a town that feels like nowhere else in the country: a former French colony, now the Union Territory of Puducherry, with bougainvillea spilling over colonial walls, street signs in French and Tamil, and a long seafront where the whole town walks at dusk.
RutzIndia.com runs this trip every day, as a one-way drop, a same-day return, a relaxed weekend with the car and driver staying on, and as airport transfers for guests flying into Chennai. This guide covers what to see, the two main routes, the calendar, the fares and a simple two-day plan. For the route fares in one place, see our Chennai to Pondicherry taxi page, or go straight to online booking.

What to see and do in Pondicherry
The French Quarter
The grid of streets between the canal and the sea, known as the White Town or Ville Blanche, is best explored on foot, early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Colonial villas painted mustard, white and ochre line streets such as Rue Romain Rolland, Rue Suffren and Rue de la Marine. Many now house boutique hotels, cafes and galleries. Look for the French War Memorial, the old lighthouse, the neoclassical Aayi Mandapam in Bharathi Park, and the Notre Dame des Anges church facing the sea.
Promenade Beach
Goubert Avenue, the seafront road, is the social heart of the town. It is closed to motor traffic in the evenings and early mornings, turning it into a promenade for walkers, joggers and families. The Gandhi statue, surrounded by stone pillars, stands midway along it. Sunrise here, with fishermen launching boats and the light coming off the water, is worth an early alarm.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, occupies several buildings in the French Quarter. Visitors can enter the main building quietly at set hours to see the flower-covered samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Visiting details are on the Ashram's website. About 10 km north, across the state border, lies Auroville, the experimental township founded in 1968. Its centrepiece is the golden sphere of the Matrimandir, which you view from a garden viewing point after an orientation at the visitor centre; entry to the inner chamber needs prior booking. The Auroville website explains the current arrangements.
Beaches, temples and churches
- Paradise Beach, reached by a short boat ride across the Chunnambar backwaters south of town.
- Serenity Beach to the north, popular with surfers and cafe-hoppers.
- Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the south boulevard, with its Gothic arches and stained glass.
- Manakula Vinayagar temple, an old and busy Ganesha shrine near the Ashram.
- Pondicherry Museum, with bronzes and finds from Arikamedu, an Indo-Roman trading site just south of town.
Eating well
Pondicherry is a food town. Expect French bakeries with proper croissants and baguettes, Creole cooking that mixes French technique with Tamil spice, excellent seafood, wood-fired pizzas in Auroville, and South Indian breakfasts in the Tamil Quarter across the canal. Weekends get busy, so book dinner tables in advance.
Who Pondicherry suits
The town wears many hats. For Chennai couples it is the default romantic weekend; for Bangalore friends' groups it is a beach and cafe break; for spiritual seekers it is the Ashram and Auroville; for foreign visitors it is an easy, walkable introduction to Tamil Nadu with a French accent. Families with young children enjoy the promenade, the boat to Paradise Beach and the ice-cream parlours. Knowing which of these you are helps us suggest the right hotel area and the right vehicle, from a compact sedan for two to a Tempo Traveller for a college reunion.
The road: ECR or the highway?
Option 1: East Coast Road (the scenic route)
From south Chennai the driver joins the ECR at Thiruvanmiyur and follows the coast through Kovalam, Mahabalipuram, Kalpakkam and Marakkanam to the northern edge of Pondicherry. It is about 150 km and three hours, a mostly two-lane road being widened in sections, with a toll near the Chennai end. The views are the point: backwaters at Muttukadu, casuarina groves, and the Marakkanam salt pans shimmering beside the road. If you want to break the journey, our Mahabalipuram by road guide explains how to fit the Shore Temple and Five Rathas into the morning.
Option 2: GST Road via Tindivanam (the faster highway)
If you are starting from the western suburbs or the airport, or travelling in heavy rain, the driver may take the four-lane GST Road through Chengalpattu to Tindivanam and then east to Pondicherry. It is slightly longer in distance but often similar in time, with more food plazas and fewer villages.
Arriving and moving around
Pondicherry's French Quarter has narrow one-way streets and limited parking. Our driver drops you at your hotel door and waits in a designated lot or the hotel's parking. For evening walks the car stays parked; for Auroville, Paradise Beach and the churches, it is on hand. The Puducherry government's official portal is the reference for any local traffic and festival notices.

When to visit, and what is on
- October to March is the prime season, with sea breezes and temperatures in the mid-twenties to low thirties. December and January are the busiest months, and New Year's Eve on the Promenade draws enormous crowds.
- The north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, brings heavy rain and the occasional cyclone warning along this coast. Build in flexibility.
- April to June is hot and humid, but hotel rates fall and mornings on the beach are still lovely.
- Festivals: the International Yoga Festival is held in early January, Pongal falls in mid-January, and Bastille Day on 14 July is marked in the French Quarter. The Ashram's darshan days, including 15 August, draw many devotees.
Long weekends from Chennai and Bangalore fill the town quickly, so reserve the car when you book your stay.

Two days in Pondicherry by car
Day 1: Chennai to Pondicherry via the coast (about 160 km). Leave Chennai at 7 am, stop at Mahabalipuram for an hour at the Shore Temple, and reach Pondicherry for lunch. Afternoon walk through the French Quarter, a visit to the Ashram at its open hours, and the Promenade at sunset. Dinner at a Creole restaurant.
Day 2: Auroville, Paradise Beach and back (about 190 km). Morning at the Auroville visitor centre and the Matrimandir viewing point, then lunch in one of Auroville's cafes. Early afternoon boat to Paradise Beach, or the Basilica and museum if you prefer. Leave by 4 pm on the highway to reach Chennai by about 7.30 pm.
Extending the trip. Pondicherry is a natural base for longer southern journeys. Head inland to the sacred mountain at Tiruvannamalai, about two and a half hours west, or continue down the coast via Chidambaram and Karaikal to Velankanni and the Chola temples of Thanjavur.
Practical tips
- Parking: the French Quarter has very limited street parking. Let the driver drop you and wait in a lot; charges are passed on at cost.
- Promenade hours: the seafront road is closed to vehicles in the evenings and early mornings, so plan drop-offs at the side streets.
- Auroville: check visiting days and passes on the official site; the Matrimandir inner chamber needs advance booking.
- Dress: light cottons and a hat for the day; modest dress at the Ashram and temples.
- Liquor: Puducherry's rules differ from Tamil Nadu's, and carrying bottles across the state line is restricted. Check the current limits before buying.
- Cyclone season: from October to December, keep an eye on weather alerts; we will reschedule rather than drive into a storm.
