How far is Velankanni from Chennai by road, and what is the cab fare?
Velankanni is about 330 km south of Chennai, typically 6.5 to 7 hours by car on the coastal highway via Pondicherry, Chidambaram and Nagapattinam. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 11,880 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 18,810 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST. Toll plazas and parking are charged exactly as paid.
On the flat, palm-fringed coast of Nagapattinam district, a gleaming white Gothic church rises above a fishing village. This is the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, better known simply as Velankanni, and it is one of the most visited Christian shrines in Asia. What makes it remarkable is who comes: Catholic families from Kerala, Goa and Mumbai, yes, but also Hindu and Muslim pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu and beyond, many walking the last stretch on their knees, tonsuring their heads or leaving wax models of the ailments they hope to have healed.
Getting there is a proper journey. Velankanni has no airport or major railway hub of its own, so most families drive, and a car with a driver means the elders rest while the kilometres pass. RutzIndia.com runs Velankanni trips from Chennai, Trichy and Bangalore, including large group bookings for the annual feast. Below you will find the route, the shrine and its surroundings, the calendar, the fares and a sample plan. Reserve your car through our online booking page.

The shrine and what pilgrims do there
The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health
Local tradition tells of three events in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: an apparition of Mary to a shepherd boy carrying milk, the healing of a lame buttermilk seller, and the rescue of Portuguese sailors caught in a violent storm off this coast, who built a chapel in thanks where they landed. From those beginnings grew today's shrine, raised to the status of a basilica in 1962. The main church, with its tall white spires, stands facing the sea, and inside a statue of Mary holding the infant Jesus is the focus of prayer. Masses are held through the day in Tamil, English, Malayalam, Konkani and other languages; the official schedule is published on the shrine's website.
Around the basilica
- Our Lady's Tank, the site associated with the first apparition, now a small shrine.
- The Morning Star Church and the Stations of the Cross laid out along a path near the sea.
- The Offerings Museum, filled with gold and silver models, letters of thanks and other gifts from pilgrims who believe their prayers were answered.
- The beach, busy at dusk with families, snack stalls and the sound of the surf. It suffered badly in the 2004 tsunami; memorials recall those lost.
Shops around the basilica sell candles, rosaries, wax figures and the small votive items that pilgrims offer. Meals are simple, with plenty of vegetarian and seafood restaurants on the approach streets.
An interfaith triangle nearby
Velankanni is often visited alongside two other great shrines of the area. The Nagore Dargah, the tomb of the Sufi saint Shahul Hameed, is about 20 km north beyond Nagapattinam and draws devotees of all faiths, especially during its Kandoori festival. Thirunallar, near Karaikal, is famous for its shrine to Saturn (Shani). Many families complete all three in a day by car. Further along the coast, the old Danish trading post of Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), with its seventeenth-century Dansborg fort, is about an hour north, and the Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary at Kodiakkarai, known for winter flocks of flamingos and other migratory birds, lies roughly an hour and a half to the south. Both make rewarding half-day outings for travellers who stay an extra night.
The route from Chennai
Along the coast (our usual route)
The car leaves Chennai on the East Coast Road, passing Mahabalipuram, and continues to Pondicherry, about three hours out, which is the natural breakfast or lunch stop. From there the highway runs south through Cuddalore and Chidambaram, home to the great Nataraja temple, then across the Kollidam river to Sirkazhi, into the Puducherry enclave of Karaikal, and finally through Nagapattinam to Velankanni. The stretch south of Chidambaram passes endless paddy, coconut groves and the green ribbon of the Kaveri delta's many channels.
Allow six and a half to seven hours without long stops, more if you visit Chidambaram temple. Crossing into and out of the Puducherry territories at Pondicherry and Karaikal is seamless for passenger cars. Toll plazas along the way are billed at cost. Our Pondicherry by road guide covers the first half of this drive in detail.
Inland via Kumbakonam
When the coast is flooded or crowded, the driver may take GST Road to Villupuram and cut south-east through Kumbakonam and Thiruvarur. It passes the Chola temple country and makes an easy combination with a night in Thanjavur, which is only about 90 km from Velankanni.
From Trichy and Bangalore
Trichy airport is about 150 km away, roughly three and a half hours; this is the best option if you are flying in from elsewhere in India. From Bangalore, the drive runs through Krishnagiri, Salem or Trichy and takes most of a day, around 420 km, so we usually suggest an overnight stop.

When to go: the feast and the calm seasons
- The annual feast, from 29 August to 8 September, is the high point of the year. The flag is hoisted on 29 August and the celebrations culminate on 8 September, the feast of Mary's Nativity. Crowds run into lakhs, many pilgrims walk hundreds of kilometres to arrive, and roads around the town are tightly regulated. Book the car and a room months in advance.
- Christmas, Holy Week and Easter are also very busy, as are Saturdays and the days around the new year.
- November to March gives the most pleasant weather outside festival weeks, although October to December is the north-east monsoon season and this low coast is exposed to cyclones. Keep dates flexible and let us reschedule if a warning is issued.
- April to July is hot and humid; plan church visits for early morning and evening.

We never send a car older than four model years.

A two-day Velankanni plan
Day 1: Chennai to Velankanni (about 340 km). Leave at 5.30 am to clear the city, breakfast in Pondicherry, a short stop at Chidambaram, lunch near Karaikal and arrival by mid-afternoon. Check in, attend the evening Mass and walk to the beach at dusk.
Day 2: Shrines and home (about 360 km). Early morning Mass, the Offerings Museum and Our Lady's Tank. Drive to Nagore Dargah, and if time allows Thirunallar, before heading north. Reach Chennai around 9 pm. Families with elders often add a third day and a night in Pondicherry or Thanjavur on the way back.
Practical tips for the pilgrimage
- Dress: modest clothes are expected in the basilica. Remove footwear where signs ask you to.
- Offerings: candles, wax figures and flowers are sold everywhere; buy from shops near the church and keep receipts if you want to compare prices.
- Crowds: on feast days, keep children close and agree a meeting point near a landmark in case you are separated.
- Parking: cars cannot reach the basilica during the feast. Your driver will drop you at the nearest permitted point and wait in a designated lot, with the charge added at cost.
- Weather: carry an umbrella from October to December and sunscreen at other times.
- Food: seafood lovers should try the Nagapattinam fish curry; vegetarian meals are easy to find near the church.
Who travels with us to Velankanni
Our Velankanni bookings come from Chennai parishes organising annual trips, Kerala and Karnataka families flying into Chennai or Trichy, Hindu households fulfilling a vow for a child's health, NRIs bringing parents back for a thanksgiving visit, and couples who were married at the shrine returning for anniversaries. Every one of them has a different pace. Tell us who is travelling and we will match the car, the start time and the stops, including longer pilgrimage taxi circuits across the south.
