How do you get from Chennai to Mahabalipuram by car?
Mahabalipuram is about 60 km south of central Chennai, typically 1.5 hours by car along the East Coast Road. A chauffeur-driven sedan costs Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies), before 5% GST. A full day trip is billed on the 250 km outstation minimum, Rs 9,000 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, with ECR tolls and parking at actual cost.
Mahabalipuram, also called Mamallapuram, is the easiest world-class heritage trip you can take from Chennai. In the seventh and eighth centuries the Pallava kings turned this small port into an open-air workshop, carving temples out of boulders, cutting shrines into hillsides and raising a stone temple right at the edge of the sea. The group of monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it sits at the end of the East Coast Road, a drive that runs past casuarina groves, fishing hamlets and some of the best beach resorts on the Coromandel coast.
Because the sights are spread across a few kilometres of town and coast, and because Chennai's traffic is unpredictable, a car with a driver is the natural way to do it. RutzIndia.com runs Mahabalipuram day trips, one-way drops to beach resorts, airport transfers, and luxury cars for the many weddings held along the ECR. Here is everything you need, and when you are ready you can book your cab online.

The monuments: what you should not miss
Shore Temple
Standing on the beach with waves breaking a few metres away, the Shore Temple is one of the earliest structural stone temples in south India, built in the early eighth century under the Pallava king Rajasimha. It has shrines to both Shiva and Vishnu and a line of Nandi figures along its compound wall. Come at opening time for soft light and few people; by late morning school groups arrive in waves.
Pancha Rathas
A short drive south, the Five Rathas are temples carved in the form of chariots, each cut from a single outcrop of granite, alongside life-size sculptures of an elephant, a lion and Nandi. They are named after the Pandava brothers and Draupadi, though they have no connection with the Mahabharata beyond the names. They are a masterclass in how Dravidian temple architecture developed.
Arjuna's Penance and the hill monuments
In the centre of town is one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world, a huge boulder face carved with gods, sages, hunters, animals and a life-size family of elephants, usually interpreted as either Arjuna's Penance or the Descent of the Ganges. Behind it, the low granite hill holds cave shrines such as the Varaha and Mahishasuramardini mandapas, the precariously balanced boulder nicknamed Krishna's Butterball, and the old lighthouse, from where you can see the whole town and the coast.
Tiger Cave and beyond
About 5 km north at Saluvankuppam, the Tiger Cave is a small rock-cut shrine whose entrance is framed by carved lion-like heads. It sits in a quiet seaside park and is easy to combine with lunch at one of the ECR resorts.
The Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and several other monuments are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which sells combined tickets both online and at the counters. The ASI website has the current rules on timings and ticketing. District-level notices, including festival traffic plans, appear on the Chengalpattu district website.
Along the East Coast Road
Leaving Chennai, the driver takes you past Thiruvanmiyur and Neelankarai onto the ECR, which quickly becomes a two-lane coastal highway with sea glimpses on the left. Worthwhile stops include:
- DakshinaChitra at Muttukadu, a living-history museum of relocated traditional homes from the southern states, with crafts demonstrations. It is closed on Tuesdays.
- Muttukadu backwaters, where the boat house rents kayaks and pedal boats.
- The Madras Crocodile Bank near Vadanemmeli, a respected reptile conservation centre.
- Kovalam (Covelong) beach, known for surfing lessons and a fishing village with a relaxed feel, not to be confused with the Kerala resort of the same name.
The ECR is lovely in the morning and busy on weekend evenings when half of Chennai drives out for dinner by the sea. Our drivers time the return accordingly. If you are staying on the OMR side, the car may run down the IT corridor to Kelambakkam and cut across to the coast, which is often faster on weekdays. There is a toll on the ECR, charged at actual cost.
From Chennai airport it is roughly 55 km via Tambaram and Kelambakkam or via the OMR; allow one and a half hours. Our Chennai airport taxi service can take you straight to a Mahabalipuram resort after a long flight.

Best time to go and festival dates
Mahabalipuram has a hot, humid coastal climate.
- November to February is the pleasant season, with sea breezes and daytime highs in the high twenties. This is also when the Mamallapuram Dance Festival, organised by the state tourism department, stages classical dance against the backdrop of Arjuna's Penance, usually from late December into January.
- March to June gets steadily hotter and more humid; visit the monuments early morning and late afternoon.
- October to December is the north-east monsoon, bringing heavy rain and, occasionally, cyclone warnings along the coast. Keep plans flexible.
Weekends and holidays such as Pongal, Diwali and Christmas are busy, as is the long New Year weekend when ECR resorts fill up.

Prefer to keep going? Mahabalipuram is the natural first stop on the drive to Pondicherry by road, about another two hours south. Our Chennai to Pondicherry taxi page has one-way fares for that route. For a heritage-heavy day, loop inland to the silk and temple town of Kanchipuram, about 65 km west.
Should you stay overnight?
A day trip covers the essentials, but an overnight stay changes the experience. Once the day-trippers leave, the town falls quiet, the sculptors put away their chisels and the fishing boats come in on the beach north of the Shore Temple. You can watch the temple turn gold at sunset, eat grilled fish by the sea, and be back at the monuments at sunrise before a single tour bus arrives. The ECR has everything from simple guesthouses near the bus stand to large beach resorts between Kovalam and the town itself.
If you stay, the car can be released after the drop and booked again for the return, which is usually cheaper than keeping it idle. Alternatively, keep the same chauffeur and continue south the next morning, making Mahabalipuram the first night of a longer coastal journey towards Pondicherry, Chidambaram and the Chola temple country.
Who this trip suits, and some practical tips
Mahabalipuram is ideal for first-time visitors with a spare day in Chennai, business travellers who want a meaningful break between meetings, families with children who will love the giant carvings and beach, and couples staying at ECR resorts who want to see the monuments without a tour bus. It also works as a short photography outing: the Shore Temple at sunrise and the Five Rathas in late light are two of the most rewarding compositions on the coast.
- Tickets: buy ASI tickets online in advance to skip the counter queue, especially on weekends.
- Timings: monuments are open from sunrise to sunset; mornings are cooler and emptier.
- Parking: there are designated lots near the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas. The driver will drop you at the gate and wait, with parking billed at cost.
- Heat and shoes: the rock surfaces get hot by noon. Wear shoes with grip for the hill, and carry water and a hat.
- Sculpture workshops: stone carvers line the main streets. Watching them work is free; buying is up to you.
- Sea safety: the beach in front of the Shore Temple has strong currents. Swim only where lifeguards indicate it is safe.
