Getting to Chail by road: distance, time and taxi fare
Chail is about 105 km from Chandigarh, typically a 3-hour drive up the Shimla highway to Kandaghat, then 29 km of forest road through Sadhupul. A RutzIndia.com sedan costs Rs 3,780 Pay Now to Reserve one way and an Innova Crysta Rs 6,570 Pay Now to Reserve (minimum fare applies). From Shimla it is roughly 45 km via Kufri. Fares exclude 5% GST and actual tolls and entry fees.
Chail began as a royal act of defiance. Local lore says Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala fell out with the British establishment in Shimla and decided to build a summer capital of his own on the next ridge, higher and grander. Whether or not every detail of that story is true, the result is real enough: a palace set in deodar forest at roughly 2,250 metres, the Maharaja's cricket ground on an even higher hilltop, and a small town that never quite turned into a resort.
Today Chail is where Chandigarh and Delhi families go when they want the mountains without Shimla's traffic. There is not much to "do" in the checklist sense, and that is the point. You walk, you sit on the palace lawns, you eat by a river, you sleep deeply. A chauffeur-driven car makes it effortless, because the last stretch of road is narrow and winding and there is no reliable local transport once you arrive.

What makes Chail special
- Chail Palace. The Maharaja's summer residence, now run as a heritage hotel by the state tourism corporation. Even if you are not staying, the lawns, the old billiards room and the forest walks around the property are open to diners and visitors, subject to the hotel's rules.
- The Chail cricket ground. Laid out for the Maharaja on a levelled hilltop at around 2,444 metres and often described as one of the highest cricket grounds in the world. It belongs to the Chail Military School, so access depends on the school's permission and timetable; your driver will know whether visitors are being allowed on the day.
- Kali Tibba. A small Kali temple on a separate summit a few kilometres from town, with 360-degree views that on a clear winter morning stretch to the Churdhar peak and the Shimla ridge.
- Sidh Baba ka Mandir. A temple associated with the Maharaja, said to stand where he originally planned his palace.
- Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. Oak, deodar and grassland slopes that shelter goral, barking deer and several pheasant species, including the cheer pheasant. The forest trails that start near the town are quiet and lovely, especially early in the morning when the birds are active.
- Sadhupul. On the way up, the Kandaghat–Chail road crosses the Ashwini river at Sadhupul, where cafés set plastic chairs and tables right in the shallow stream. It is a family favourite for lunch in summer, though the river rises fast in the monsoon.
Chail also makes a fine base for Kufri and Shimla, both within about 45 km, and for the apple country around Theog. Our Kufri by road guide explains that side of the hills, and if the orchards tempt you further east, the Narkanda by road guide covers the high apple belt beyond Theog.
The road to Chail, section by section
Chandigarh to Kandaghat (about 75 km)
You leave the Tricity through Zirakpur or Panchkula, enter Himachal at Parwanoo, where out-of-state vehicles pay the state entry fee, and climb the four-lane Kalka–Shimla highway past Dharampur and Solan. The four-lane has a toll plaza that we pass on at actual cost. This part is quick when traffic is light, around 1 hour 45 minutes. Solan, known for its mushrooms and its old brewery, is the natural stop for tea and fuel.
Kandaghat to Chail via Sadhupul (about 29 km)
At Kandaghat the car turns off the highway onto a narrow two-lane road that drops to Sadhupul and then climbs steeply through pine and oak to Chail. It is a beautiful drive but a slow one, with blind curves and occasional oncoming buses. Allow about an hour. This is where an experienced hill chauffeur earns his keep.
Alternative: via Shimla and Kufri
If you are already in Shimla, the better approach is east along the Hindustan–Tibet road to Kufri, then a turn south along the ridge to Chail, about 45 km in total. Some drivers also use the Shimla–Junga–Chail link. Coming from Chandigarh, the Shimla route is longer but makes sense if you want a night in Shimla on the way; our Chandigarh to Shimla taxi covers that first leg.
From Delhi, Chail is roughly 350 km, usually 7 to 8 hours with breaks. Most people drive to Chandigarh or Kasauli on day one.

When to visit Chail
Chail's altitude gives it a slightly harsher climate than Kasauli and a gentler one than Narkanda.
- March to June: warm days, cool nights and the palace lawns at their best. This is peak season; book weekend stays and cars early.
- July to mid-September: heavy rain, mist and leeches on forest paths. The Sadhupul stream becomes a river and the riverside cafés close or move back. Check road conditions after heavy downpours.
- Late September to December: clear skies and crisp air, excellent for photography and the Kali Tibba viewpoint. Diwali and Christmas weeks are busy.
- January and February: Chail normally sees snow in winter, sometimes heavy. The Kandaghat road and the Kufri link can shut for a day or longer until cleared, and your chauffeur may need chains. Snow days are magical, but keep a flexible return.

Every Shimla drop, and every car above a sedan from Chandigarh, is charged the minimum fare for its class, because the per-km figure would fall below it. The two-day figure uses the outstation minimum: two calendar days means at least 500 km is billed, even though Chandigarh to Chail and back with local drives is nearer 260 to 300 km. Night allowance for the driver is Rs 1,500 per night. Prices are before 5% GST, and we add the Himachal entry fee, highway toll and parking exactly as paid. You pay by card or UPI in the booker; businesses receive a GST invoice.
If your plans change, cancelling more than 72 hours before pickup costs nothing. Inside 72 hours we keep 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or for a no-show the full fare, as set out in our cancellation policy.

Three days: Chail, Kufri and Shimla (about 330 km driven)
- Day 1: Chandigarh to Chail as above.
- Day 2: Chail to Kufri along the ridge (about 30 km), the Himalayan Nature Park and Mahasu viewpoint, then on to Shimla for the evening on the Ridge.
- Day 3: Shimla's Viceregal Lodge in the morning, then down to Chandigarh (about 115 km).
Starting from Kasauli instead? The Kasauli by road guide explains how to link the two via Solan in about two hours.
Practical notes
- Parking: Chail Palace and most hotels have parking for guests. The small bazaar has limited roadside space; your chauffeur will wait at the hotel rather than block the road.
- Fuel: fill up at Solan or Kandaghat. Do not count on a pump in Chail itself.
- Narrow road etiquette: on the Sadhupul climb, vehicles going uphill have right of way by hill convention, and buses need room at hairpins. This is not a road for a nervous self-drive.
- Altitude: about 2,250 metres. No altitude sickness to speak of, but it is noticeably colder than Shimla at night.
- Pack: a warm layer in every season, rain gear from July, and woollens, gloves and waterproof shoes from December.
- Connectivity: mobile data is decent in town, weaker in the sanctuary.
- Entry fees and visiting rules: the palace, the sanctuary and the military school ground each set their own rules and charges; check at the gate before you plan your day around them.
