The 4-day Maharashtra tour package is a Mumbai-to-Mumbai loop by private car: a day in the city, a boat to the Elephanta caves, a night at Lonavala in the Western Ghats, the Karla and Bhaja caves and a night in Pune. One chauffeur drives the whole way, and the car is charged per kilometre with a 250 km daily minimum.
A four-day trip for people with a long weekend
Most visitors to Mumbai never leave the city, which is a pity, because the Sahyadri hills and some of India's oldest cave temples are two hours away. This short Maharashtra itinerary fits Mumbai, the ghats and Pune into four days without any long drives: the longest leg is 150 km of expressway. It suits couples on a long weekend, travellers adding a few days to a Mumbai business trip, and families who want to show children something beyond malls and the seafront.
If the rock-cut masterpieces of Ajanta and Ellora are the main reason for coming to Maharashtra, choose the 5-day Maharashtra tour package, which spends two full days at the caves near Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad). If you have only a day, a simple Mumbai to Pune taxi with a stop at Lonavala covers the hills.

Mumbai traffic, the ghat and the Expressway
RutzIndia.com plans this trip around the one unavoidable fact of Mumbai: traffic. The drive from the airport to Colaba or Fort takes anything from 50 minutes to well over an hour, and the city's arterial roads clog from about 9 to 11 in the morning and 6 to 9 in the evening. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the newer coastal road shorten the western route, and your chauffeur picks between them on the day. For sightseeing, the car drops you at each stop and waits nearby, since parking in the Fort area is scarce.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a different world: a tolled, access-controlled road, the first of its kind in India, climbing the Bhor ghat in long, engineered curves. Our chauffeurs keep to the left lanes on the ghat and respect the speed limits enforced by cameras. In the monsoon, low cloud can reduce visibility on the crest near Khandala to a few metres, and weekend traffic heading to the hills can back up for kilometres; the plan's timings leave room for that. Tolls on the Expressway and parking at the caves and forts are added at actual cost. For history and route details, the Wikipedia article on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is useful.
The Elephanta morning
Elephanta takes most of day 2, so it helps to know how it works. Ferries leave from the jetty beside the Gateway of India from early morning; the crossing takes about an hour each way and tickets are bought at the jetty. On the island, a short walk or a small toy train leads to the foot of the stairs up to the caves, lined with souvenir stalls. The caves themselves are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and are closed on Mondays, which is the main scheduling rule for this package: never plan day 2 for a Monday.
In the heavy monsoon, ferry services can be suspended when the sea is rough. If that happens, your chauffeur simply drives you up to Lonavala earlier, and the desk can add Kanheri caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park instead.

Where to stay: three very different nights
- South Mumbai: Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway and ferry, which matters on day 2. Marine Drive hotels have sea views; the area around Nariman Point is quieter at night.
- Lonavala: resorts along the old Mumbai-Pune road and up towards the viewpoints, many with valley views and pools. Weekends and monsoon Saturdays fill fast with Mumbai and Pune weekenders; weekdays are calmer and cheaper.
- Pune: Koregaon Park and the Camp area have good hotels, restaurants and easy access to the Aga Khan Palace; the old city near Shaniwar Wada is lively but congested.
The RutzIndia.com travel desk can reserve all three and send one written quote.
Monsoon green or winter clear?
Maharashtra has two good seasons for this loop. October to February brings dry, clear days of 25 to 32°C, ideal for walking in Mumbai and climbing to the caves. Then there is the monsoon, roughly June to September: the ghats turn green, waterfalls run beside the Expressway and Lonavala is at its most beautiful, but Mumbai flooding and ferry disruptions are real risks. March to May is hot and humid in Mumbai.
Festivals matter too. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, is spectacular in both Mumbai and Pune but causes road closures for processions, especially on the final immersion day. Diwali in October or November is lovely, with lit-up streets, but hotels in Lonavala sell out.

The right car for four days
Distances are short, so comfort in city traffic and on the ghat matters most. Two travellers do well in a sedan; if you want more space and a quieter cabin for Mumbai's slow roads, a premium sedan such as a Honda City is a sensible step up. Families of four to six should take an Innova Crysta, which also swallows airport luggage easily. Groups travelling together, perhaps for a school trip or an office outing, can book a Tempo Traveller in Mumbai; the only catch is that big vans cannot enter some lanes near Crawford Market, so there is a little more walking. Every vehicle is within four model years.
How this package is priced
Because the loop covers only about 420 km, the daily minimum of 250 km sets the billable distance at 1,000 km for four days. Multiply by the class rate, Rs 72/km for a sedan, Rs 96/km for a premium sedan, Rs 114/km for an Innova, Rs 156/km for a Tempo Traveller, and you have the car fare shown in the table. The spare distance means a detour to Matheran or a longer evening in Pune adds nothing to the bill. The chauffeur's night allowance of Rs 3,000 a night, tolls, parking and 5% GST are added. Ferry tickets, monument entry, hotels and meals are separate; the travel desk quotes them in writing if you want an all-inclusive price.
Adding a day, or changing the order
- Mahabaleshwar: two hours beyond Pune, with strawberry farms and valley viewpoints; see Mahabaleshwar by road.
- Shirdi or Nashik: pilgrims often add Sai Baba's town or Nashik's temples and vineyards; the Mumbai to Shirdi taxi page gives distances and fares.
- Goa: continue south by car from Pune or Mumbai and pick up a Goa tour package on arrival.
- Reverse it: fly into Pune and end in Mumbai, which suits evening departures from Mumbai's international terminal.
Other trips from the city are listed on tour packages from Mumbai, and for Pune-based travellers on tour packages from Pune. Lonavala itself gets a full guide in Lonavala by road.
Small things that make the trip smoother
Carry cash in small notes for the ferry jetty, cave parking and roadside chai; card machines are unreliable on Elephanta. Wear shoes with grip, because the rock steps at Karla and Elephanta turn slick after rain. Lonavala's famous chikki shops line the old highway, and your chauffeur will know which ones locals favour. In Pune, Shaniwar Wada's gardens are best late in the afternoon, when the stone walls glow and the heat has gone. Children love the Elephanta toy train and the monkeys, though you should keep food out of sight. Finally, allow at least three hours for the Expressway run on the last day, because a single breakdown on the ghat can slow everything down.
