Wayanad by road: distance, drive time and cab fares
Wayanad's main town, Kalpetta, is about 85 km from Kozhikode (Calicut), typically 2.5 to 3 hours by car on NH766 over the Thamarassery ghat. The ghat climb is short in kilometres, so each class pays its floor fare: sedan Rs 3,960 Pay Now to Reserve, Innova Crysta Rs 6,930 Pay Now to Reserve, before 5% GST (minimum fare applies). From Bangalore it is about 280 km via Mysore: Rs 10,080 Pay Now to Reserve in a sedan, with tolls and parking extra at actual cost.
Wayanad is a high green plateau in the Western Ghats where Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu meet. It is a district of coffee, pepper, cardamom and tea estates, of paddy valleys and bamboo forests, of old tribal settlements and small market towns, and of wildlife sanctuaries that run seamlessly into Bandipur, Nagarhole and Mudumalai across the borders. It feels very different from the rest of Kerala: cooler, more rural, more spread out, and with a history that reaches back to the Stone Age carvings in the Edakkal Caves.
That spread is the reason to come with a car. The main sights lie in several directions from Kalpetta, often 20 to 40 km apart, along winding estate roads where buses are infrequent. A chauffeur who knows which waterfall is open this month, when the forest safaris run and how to time the ghat around the lorry traffic makes a long weekend here effortless. This guide covers the two main approaches, the sights, the seasons and the forest rules, and RutzIndia.com fares. When you are ready, book online.

Approach one: Kozhikode and the Thamarassery ghat
From Kozhikode city or Calicut International Airport at Karipur, the road runs inland through Kunnamangalam and Thamarassery to Adivaram at the foot of the hills. Then comes the Thamarassery ghat: roughly 12 km of climbing with nine hairpin bends, rising to Lakkidi, the gateway of Wayanad, where a viewpoint looks back down over the whole ascent. Just beyond is Vythiri and then Kalpetta.
- Timing. About 2.5 to 3 hours from the city; longer at weekends, when the ghat can jam with holiday traffic and heavy lorries crawling uphill.
- Monsoon. Heavy rain occasionally brings landslips and temporary traffic restrictions on the ghat. Check district advisories on the official Wayanad district portal and keep to daylight.
- From the airport. Calicut airport is about 25 km from the city; the AAI Calicut airport page has terminal information. Kalpetta is roughly 100 km from arrivals. Our chauffeur follows the flight, stands at the exit with a name board, and allows half an hour free after a domestic landing and a full hour after an international one before the hourly waiting rate begins.
- Stops. Thamarassery has breakfast places; at Lakkidi, the viewpoint and the nearby Pookode lake make a gentle first halt.
Approach two: Bangalore and Mysore through the forests
Wayanad is a favourite weekend escape from Bangalore, about 280 km via Mysore and Gundlupet, usually 6 to 7 hours. The classic route runs on NH766 through the Bandipur tiger reserve in Karnataka and the Muthanga sanctuary in Kerala to Sulthan Bathery, then on to Kalpetta. An alternative leaves Mysore via Hunsur and enters Wayanad near Kutta or Bavali towards Mananthavady, skirting Nagarhole.
The critical rule: night traffic through the forest is restricted. On the Bandipur stretch of NH766, general traffic is not permitted at night, typically from 9 pm to 6 am, and the Mananthavady route through the Nagarhole side has similar restrictions. Your driver plans departures so that you clear the forest in daylight. The reward is real: deer, elephants and langurs beside the road are common sights.
For the first leg, our Bangalore to Mysore taxi page and the Mysore taxi service desk cover local hire, and our guides to Bandipur by road and Kabini by road describe the wildlife country on the way.

What to see in Wayanad
- Edakkal Caves. Near Ambalavayal, a climb up Ambukuthi hill leads to a rock shelter whose walls are covered in ancient engravings of human figures, animals and symbols, among the oldest in South India. The final walk is steep; timings and visitor caps change, so check before going and arrive early.
- Banasura Sagar dam. Near Padinjarathara, one of the largest earthen dams in India, with the reservoir dotted with small islands and speedboats for hire.
- Pookode Lake. A natural freshwater lake near Lakkidi ringed by forest, with pedal boats and a walking path.
- Chembra Peak. The highest point in Wayanad, known for a heart-shaped lake on its slopes. Treks are regulated by the forest department with permits and limited daily numbers, and the trail has been closed for long periods; check the current status with the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department.
- Soochipara and Meenmutty waterfalls. Soochipara (Sentinel Rock) near Meppadi and Meenmutty near Vaduvanchal are the best-known falls, spectacular after the monsoon. Access depends on season and safety.
- Muthanga and Tholpetty wildlife sanctuaries. Forest department jeep safaris run at set times in the morning and afternoon, subject to seasonal closures during the dry months when fire risk is high.
- Thirunelli temple. An ancient Vishnu temple in the forests of north Wayanad near Mananthavady, where pilgrims perform rites for ancestors in the Papanasini stream.
- Kuruva Dweep. River islands on the Kabini reached by bamboo raft, with daily visitor caps and closures in heavy rain.
- Plantations and spice shops. Estate stays and walks through coffee and pepper are a big part of the Wayanad experience; buy spices, honey and coffee directly.
Please travel thoughtfully in the district. The landslides of July 2024 in the Meppadi area caused tragic loss of life, and some areas remain restricted. Follow local instructions, avoid treating affected places as sightseeing spots, and support the district's recovery by staying and spending locally. The DTPC Wayanad site lists official tourism information.
When to visit Wayanad
- October to February is the most pleasant: cool, clear days, cold nights and green hills.
- March to May is warmer but still comfortable at altitude, and popular with families escaping the plains; some wildlife safaris may close during the peak fire season.
- June to September is monsoon, very heavy in parts of the district. Waterfalls roar and the landscape is stunning, but landslip risk, closures of treks and falls, and slow ghat traffic mean you should plan conservatively and stay flexible.
- Christmas, New Year, Onam and Karnataka long weekends bring heavy traffic on both approaches.

Three days in Wayanad by car
- Day 1 (about 110 km): Kozhikode after breakfast, up the ghat to Lakkidi viewpoint, Pookode lake, lunch in Vythiri, then Banasura Sagar dam in the late afternoon.
- Day 2 (about 100 km): early start for Edakkal Caves, Sulthan Bathery's Jain temple and bazaar, an afternoon forest safari at Muthanga if running.
- Day 3 (about 150 km): Thirunelli temple at dawn or a plantation walk, then down the ghat to Kozhikode, with an evening on the city's beach and a famous Malabar biryani.
The meter reads around 360 km, but three days are billed on the 750 km minimum. If you are coming from Bangalore instead, day 1 is the drive in and day 3 the drive back, and the kilometres fit the minimum closely.
Where to stay
Kalpetta and Vythiri are central and well connected, with hotels and resorts close to the main road. Plantation homestays around Meppadi, Ambalavayal and Mananthavady offer quiet and birdsong but sometimes sit at the end of steep, narrow tracks; tell us the property when booking so we send a suitable car. Tree-house and forest resorts are a Wayanad speciality, but check that they are fully licensed.
Tips for the Wayanad drive
- Respect the forest night closures; there is no way round them.
- Carry cash for safaris, parking and small shops; networks drop in the forests.
- Leech socks help on estate and waterfall walks in and after the monsoon.
- Check attraction status on the day; caves, falls and treks can close at short notice for weather or safety.
- Warm layers for evenings from November to February.
- Cancellation terms: free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or on no-show. See our cancellation policy.
